    Booooom!
    See I worked with a big name in the beauty industry at some point and girrrrrrrl that was when my eyes opened up to how politics runs in this bitch! Pardon my French*
    You had me at the part where these PR companies give products to their friends. We see things on Instagram. We see their launch and wonder why "actual " influencers aren't there. Girl, we see.

    Guys here is the thing about actresses and celebrities vs bloggers and content creators, you cannot compare the level of engagement! You cannot compare an actress with 50,000 followers to a beauty blogger with 50,000 followers in the beauty community because when analyzed closely you will probably see that only about 10- 20% of an actress's followers are interested in the beauty product that you have given her to talk about, the other 90% are following her because she is a celebrity. However with beauty gurus the engagement and interest tends to be a lot higher, about 80% to 90% because their followers are following them for beauty related reasons. Add this to the fact that bloggers will continue to answer questions on a product and direct people to brands through answered questions, outside the realm of any sponsorship.

      Dimma Umeh what these brands fail to understand is the engagement dynamics between celebrities and vloggers. Not all celebrities are influencers, however most vloggers are influencers for their audience. More so, celebrities have a one to many relationship with their audience. However vloggers have a one-to-one of many relationship with their audience. The later is were brands should spend most of their budget (especially brands isi di mma), but it's like once they come into Naija, our madness affects them too and they just start throwing money around the old way. Maybe reaching out to the brands international arms and offering them PR assistance from the outside might be a nice strategy, just like one of the comments suggested. I reckon that might open more channels, although I appreciate the intricacies of making a deal like that work..

      For me it's like when Jackie Aina does a makeup review versus a popular actress like Mercy Johnson or Toke Makinwa .. who do u think I'll believe 🤔? Why should I believe an actress that mostly depends on makeup artists to get her make up done .. 2. Most TH-camrs are sincere and that's why I watch makeup reviews in the first place 🙄

  • @jenznwachukwu
    @jenznwachukwu 7 ปีที่แล้ว +86

    Can I suggest another strategy - given that your audience is not limited to Nigerians based in Nigeria but worldwide, you should (if you aren't already that is) reach out to the brands you want to work with internationally. They know that your audience base is global so really it doesn't matter much where you are.
    Brands are concerned mainly with your "reach" and that being global, you should market yourself likewise.
    Don't limit yourself to the brands that you physically see in Nigeria because very few if any have offices in Nigeria - they only sell products there.
    L'Oreal for instance is a brand that is international and is forever launching new products and recently brought out a TV advert using content producers and just one known celeb. They weren't all from the UK and were from a very wide spectrum within society.
    Also I would suggest cultivating relationships/ collaborations etc with other content producers beyond Nigeria because again it reinforces the fact that your audience is global.
    I've rambled on for too long 🙈. You will go far 😘

    She's back... Nice. I feel your pain.. Abeg with your reach and engaged audience, any brand that wants free PR has earned a slap for themselves. The cost of data, products, pseudo customer service time is soo expensive in Nigeria. These brands tend to go for short term gains and optimize for numbers instead of engagement (like you rightfully pointed out). It's good to see you address it. Let's hope they see this and and recalibrate their approach. Good to have you back tho..

    exactly. I've never bought any zaron product simply because I have never seen any breakdown review of their product. yet they are using Rita Dominic as their biggest marketing strategy because she has millions of followers. but if i see a pretty zaron lipstick on Rita's lips and I cannot ask her how matte the lipstick is, I'm definitely not buying. cos we don't even return products here in Nigeria. I can't do that gamble with my money.

    Not a Beauty vlogger but I'm a Tech TH-camr here in Nigeria. I think tech companies actually value influencers but it doesn't come with it's own share of politics. 😂 The fact that you buy these products to review is super super valuable and you are the one they should even trust more. Great job Dimma!

    This is sooo true! Preach Hunie! Preach! We share similar struggles in the South African blogger/ TH-camr space. However, we're certainly moving towards a full spin of the ''digital age'" (nowhere close still, but further than we were 4 years ago). PR companies here are now opening doors for experienced and new (comers) bloggers. Thanks for sharing hun.

    Thank you for sharing this hun. This is also happening in Kenya and what most of these brands don't realize is that celebrities cannot create content. They will just post what the need to post, get their cash and keep it moving and never even speak about the product/brand again. ION you look absolutely stunning

      I feel like the industry in Kenya is a bit more developed than the one in Nigeria, some Brands understand the value influencers provide and are willing to compensate them properly. Looking at the Brands Sharon and Susan have worked with for our 2 cents is quite encouraging and reminds me that in due time, things will change.

    Thank you for addressing this issue. These PR companies and brands have to do better. I'm at a point where I can't buy some products except my favourite content creators have reviewed them cause right now makeup is really expensive and I can't afford to purchase something that won't work for me.

    I think the beauty community in Nigeria has a long way to go . This applies to brands and content creators. There are very people who create quality content and are always consistent with posts. The brands also need to realize which people actually influence the culture. So many so called 'influencers' have very little to offer. I really hope this changes. I appreciate the content you put out and I hope to see more of this coming out of Nigeria.

    I am a public Relations expert and i belief more in the power of reviews, before and after reveals, and recommendations from those that really use these products. Not some actor/actress that uses something else, but advertises a product she/he has never used, and swearing by it on a billboard, Jingle or wherever!
    Plus you are beautiful! So what is there for these brands to lose... really?!!

    Nice hair cut Dimma. About the beauty community in Nigeria and the way companies treat beauty bloggers/ TH-camrs in naija, I think the main issue stems from the fact that most Nigerians(living in Nigeria) don't watch youtube videos unlike in other countries. Let me break it down, in Nigeria u have to pay for an amount of MB to be subscribed to the internet, videos will take most of the MB. Now in other countries u pay monthly for WiFi and u are good to go, u don't need to put off ur mobile data or be worried that TH-cam videos will finish ur MB. Do a survey of ur subscribers and ur content views, you'll find out that most of ur viewers though they are Nigerians, don't live in Nigeria. I think this is why it looks like beauty companies are neglecting youtubers in nigeria. It's easier for them to deal with an actress(who posts on FB and IG) cos IG and Facebook is at least accessible to the average nigerian. This shouldn't deter u, Nigeria will still get there. But as long as a Nigerian living in Nigeria still has to subscribe for weekly or monthly MB, watching a TH-cam video will be an issue which translates that companies will feel it's a waste of product giving their brands to a TH-camr when the average Nigerian(that lives in Nigeria) won't even watch the video. Cheers dear, keep up the good work

    • @DimmaUmeh
      @DimmaUmeh  7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      This is true, analytics tells us this already. My Nigerian viewers are about 30 to 40% and this is standard for most Nigerian youtubers, It hardly gets better than that mainly because of internet related reasons but the percentage is growing daily. The thing about using celebrities is this, there is little to no engagement, there is no back and forth and they will not answer questions. You cannot compare an actress with 50,000 followers to a beauty blogger with 50,000 followers in the beauty community because when analyzed closely you will see that only about 10 -20% of an actress's followers are interested in the beauty product that you have given her to talk about, the other 90% are following her because she is a celebrity. However with beauty gurus the engagement and interest is usually high, about 80% to 90% because their followers are following them for beauty related reasons.

      Jane Maduka my dear you nailed it! I live in Nigeria but currently in the UK, when I'm here, I use the opportunity to watch and follow a lot of TH-cam videos and TH-camrs but while in Nigeria, it's so difficult because just half of a video can wipe off my whole mb! Being a blogger or youtuber in Nigeria is a LOT OF HARDWORK but I hope we will get there one day!

    • @GracefulKnots
      @GracefulKnots 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Jane Maduka This is so true. I was really surprised to note that many Nigerians with large followings on Instagram hardly have any comments on their TH-cam videos as people in Nigeria don't watch TH-cam regularly ( my siblings included. I used to be annoyed with them for not commenting on my videos lol) I was in Lagos in Feb for a week and my sister was surprised that in about I used up the amount of MB they would use in 1 month as I was constantly watching TH-cam videos :)

    The real rhonke fella spoke about it on Instagram a couple of days ago.
    It can be quite frustrating when Brands expect one to create content for free or in exchange for product.
    The value we provide isn't properly understood by many Brands.
    Like was said in the comments , all we can do is keep creating quality content, building our audience, reaching out to international brands and praying that one day soon, things change.

    I learned a ton from this video! I was familiar with how painstaking the process of making videos with decent production value is, but I just assumed with the number of subscribers you have that any popular brands available in Lagos would have you on their PR list! It makes no sense to me! Bloggers in the US with 100,000+ subscribers are on many lists of wide varieties of brands.
    You're 100000% right: it must change for countries outside the EU and US!!!! 💙💙💙

You are growing and am praying you can branch out to other things via this forum to grow your career here cause beauty in naija??? Ehen...

    • @DimmaUmeh
      @DimmaUmeh  7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I honestly believe that it can, however it would require brands to do their due diligence. The biggest advice that I will give anybody starting out right now since it is currently working for me is to work towards growing your channel. Work on your content, quality, consistency and everything and don't look on them here for anything. The more you grow the more brands outside of Nigeria begin to see you and they understand numbers and respect engagement. I just wanted people to know because a lot of people actually don't know that brands usually allocate money to bloggers but some never see it.

      I am British Nigerian and I get stuff even as a small channel . That said the stuff sometimes are things I dont bother too much to have or review . However big channels get lots of stuff. I make videos on Nigerian news etc , waoh , waoh , waoh , the view might be huge but the money is peanuts . Not that I do it for money , I have a good paying job, just saying . I understand everything you are saying . With my small channel I get loads of companies asking to manage me . I think in Nigeria these companies know that people dont really buy stuff. I have loads of expensive makeup like channel, Gucci etc , do I really use them ? not really . But I will go on holiday to Nigeria and buy Island Beauty , eye pencils without name , earrings that costs N500 etc hahahahahah
      You are one beautiful lady , do what you do because you like it , one day you will have a million subs and these companies will beg you . Also when you come into the UK go for the beauty workshops , connect and network . Much love

    I hear your frustration on the whole PR/ social media marketing platform in Nigeria. I think another point to bare in mind is that TH-cam is till relatively young in Nigeria and based on what happened in the U.K., it took the industry here quite some years before brands really understood the power and potential of contents makers and TH-cam.
    Keep going, it's only a matter of time before all the big fish realise the potential in Nigeria

    Hi Dimma, the short hair really suits you. You spoke so much truth in this video and its just shocking the way things work over here. The fact that the brands expect so much for so little is actual insulting to the bloggers and vloggers who put so much time and effort into the work that they do. At the end of the day, a lot of us create these videos because we enjoy them and so we will continue to do so whether they see us as useful or not. At some point, there's going to be a shift in the way that brands reach their target consumers (hopefully they start to see the importance of content creators) and all the Nigerian youtubers will still be standing! Sorry for my long comment, I'm just as pissed.
    Well done and keep putting out your great videos. xo

    Dimma Thanks for explaining. It must be so exhausting and disheartening but as long as your spirit is ok, keep doing what you are doing. Most people that are following you are appreciative of your work and know the love and passion you have. You are one of the pioneers and a Changmaker. That comes with a lot so yeah take time out whenever you need to. Love and Light xx ❤️

    I am actually using the Yves Rocher product currently because of you! I do very much relate with you. Worked with an advertising agency when I moved back to Nigeria & discovered, a lot of brands are all about numbers and not engagement. ❤️❤️❤️

    welcome back girl.Don't mind those fools.You just spoke my mind. From black opal to Mac to classic to Huda to Milani to Naked to Morphe and all the others what are they doing in Nigeria? maybe becos we just buy their products so they just don't see the need.

    Love you too,Dinma... i actually got the Yves Roche zero blemish and the lady there asked if I was there bcos of you, to which i answered affirmative. This shows the impact of beauty bloggers and vloggers on products. i wonder why these PR people don't understand... TH-cam is where a lot of people check for product reviews and all... Someone needs to make them understand...

  • @FolakeOnirun
    @FolakeOnirun 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I totally agree with you. TH-camrs in Nigeria are some of the most persistent ones in the community. It is not easy to grow in Nigeria, and PR what???? They are not ready to look our way. I believe we will get there some time soon. Keep doing you girl!

    I am glad you did this video. I think other influential Nigerian TH-camrs like @sisiyemmie should start a campaign with a trending hasgtag. It's time to seize your place. If they wont respect you guys for the effort you put in, then its time to seize it. Thank you for starting the conversation. It's time to get other influencers to start the conversation as well!!!

    This a very necessary video Dimma. ❤️Thank you for shedding light on this issue. I think you of all people and Sisi Yemmie should be approached first. You are both honest, personable, relatable and professional women. How can we as your supporters help change things? Are there ways for us to get brands to take notice?

    You are loved💖
    The hair is gorgeous!
    On PR, please consider:
    1, reaching out to "International brands yourself"....
    Prepare your media kit, draft your letters and reach out...
    You have audience in all parts of the world, have solid engagement and interactions on your videos and growing by the day...
    Brands want all of that and you've got it. So, reach out.
    We all know Nigeria is all about "man no man" and can't really bank on all that jazz but I am confident if you start reaching out yourself to "International brands", you just might surprise yourself.
    2, If possible, enquire about agencies who do PR representative and maybe register with them, that might help too...
    BTW, the former, I have done via my blog and have seen great results....
    All the same, you are doing amazing and we all are supportive of your great work.
    💖

    See me jumping up and down when I saw your new video! You have greatly been missed. Your hair looks great and you couldn't have said it better about beauty brands & PR companies. Its bad in Nigeria which is why content creators like us are really just focusing on growing our channel and brand. Even smaller upcoming brands are doing a better job and taking the initiative to recognize we bloggers/TH-camrs.

    Thank you so much for this vid I'm in the process of starting a TH-cam channel for vlogs, makeup and more and I already can tell a lot goes into making these videos with cost and editing and that's something a lot of ppl don't seem to get. They think every TH-camr gets free products to do reviews everyday and that's not the case. I really appreciate this vid and keep it up you will do excellent.

    Please tell them oh! I'm so tired of brands expecting content for free its annoying and sometimes just straight up insulting. You want to pay an actress to advertise your makeup but want a beauty blogger to create content for you free of charge? Come back when people start paying rent and salaries with lipstick abeg.

    That's right, Sistah, maintain your integrity and let the industry know that you know your worth. There was a time in USA when consumer companies did not acknowledge the value of the African American dollar. We heard many times the excuse, "Blacks don't spend money." TOTALLY FALSE! In the meantime, stand your ground while they drag their feet; they'll come around.

    All these brand in Nigeria need to learn from Fashion Nova! Fashion Nova is currently struggling to keep up with their growth because of their use of influencer marketing. We've moved from mainstream advertising. Influencer marketing is the way to go!
    I am about starting a youtube channel, but I'm prepping myself for the harsh realities so I don't get disappointed.

    I don't know if it makes a difference to how the brands might view you and other beauty bloggers in Nigeria, but I'm a black viewer in the US and I've subscribed to overseas youtube channels (including yours now) because you have my skin tone and I like the way you do makeup using products I use or might use. I've never purchased Mac, but if you were able to review a product and I liked it I'd definitely consider it. Bloggers influenced me to purchase FENTY foundation for example. It's actually a sound financial investment for companies if the blogger is good- and I only found you because you were a suggested video based on other channels I like and based on your views. It's worth their while to sponsor your content the way some companies have for TH-camrs like Jackie Aina.
