@@bacsolo3719Since you touched upon the existence of lion in Asia, let's discuss it. While it's widely accepted that lions aren't indigenous to Asia, understanding the cultural context is crucial when interpreting terms like "lion" in practices such as Bokator, where "Bok" means "smash or kill" and "tor" means "lion." The use of the term in Bokator's name doesn't necessarily indicate a literal lion, and even if it does, it doesn't have to be native to the region to be referenced. Instead, it likely serves as a symbolic or metaphorical representation deeply entrenched in local traditions and beliefs. Consider the Dragon Dance in Chinese culture-did they mean dragons ever existed? We all know they didn't, but we don't disregard the cultural significance based on folklore. Moreover, consider the prevalence of mythical creatures like dragons, Garuda, or Singha in Asian cultural narratives, despite the absence of scientific evidence supporting their existence. Even in Western cultures, stories of fire-breathing dragons persist despite lacking empirical proof. Similarly, the lion in Bokator may symbolize defense against dangerous animals, with lions representing a widely recognized symbol of formidable strength and prowess in hunting. It's also important to acknowledge linguistic nuances, particularly in the Khmer dialect. Unlike English, where distinct words often designate different species within the same family, Khmer commonly groups similar animals under a single term. For instance, various members of the cat family, such as leopards and jaguars, are referred to as "ខ្លា" ("Tiger" in English). In the context of Bokator, the term "lion" (in Khmer) might simply be a reference to any formidable and deadly animal, akin to how "tiger" is used to encompass a broader category of feline predators. Therefore, when analyzing the significance of "lion" in Bokator, it's essential to appreciate its cultural symbolism and recognize that it may not directly correlate with the biological reality of lions in Asia. Instead, it likely reflects broader cultural beliefs and historical contexts, as well as linguistic conventions specific to the Khmer language.
2:38 That left guy is name SAN KIM SEAN The Bokator was unknown in Cambodia until 1990 when San Kim Sean returned from the United States to Phnom Penh in Cambodia as a rescued (inventor) of the Bokator. Who is San Kim Sean? San Kim Sean left Cambodia for the refugee camp of Khao-I-Dang in Thailand in 1979 on September 29, 1980 he left Thailand and lived in the refugee camp in Houston in the United States later in the year 1984 he was lived in Long Beach, California. He was a Hapkido Professor at the academy in the USA. He taught Hapkido for ten years in the US without any highlights he was just another Hapkido teacher. But when he returned from the US to Cambodia in 1990 he "recreated" using traditional Khmer boxing as a base and using the name of a supposedly Khmer legend from the Angkorian period to name his new fighting style the Bokator this all with feelings anti-Thai and radical nationalism. He created the Bokator Academy Academy, created the Bokator Federation and even a restaurant, the San Kim Sean Kun Bokator Restaurant Club located on Abacus Lane in Siem Reap. But San Kim Sean only had recognition of his style in Cambodia in 2001 when he was recognized by the government of Cambodia. San Kim Sean teaching Hap Ki Do in the US had never spoken Bokator while living in the US Much of Bokator's appearance is due to the film Ong-Bak: Muay Thai Warrior by actor Tony Jaa. After this film, Bokator masters began to appear.

They will turn Coke into Pepsi, comparing Jordan to Kobe and have ridiculous answers that don't make sense. Should have just said Bokator came from India, and it flourish during the Angkor era. That would have been more believable. But to not inform this information is like misleading people.
What if I ask you "What is Garuda, Hanuman, Singha...?" If you can say they are mythical creatures and you have them a lot in your culture, then it shouldn't seem odd for us to link Bokator to the Lion, whether or not lions exist in the region. This association can carry symbolic meaning, much like the mythical creatures in your culture and mine.

The original name was Kbach Kun Boran Khmer. The grandmaster just chose the name Bokator because it’s easier and catchy. Bokator is a style of Kbach Kun Boran Khmer. Kbach Kun Boran Khmer is basically a blanket term meaning ancient Cambodian martial arts. There were many styles. One style was Bokator. It involves using bamboo forearm protectors and a low stance. My grandpa practiced it way before Ong Bak ever came out. Cambodians have been practicing Pradal Serey (now known as Kun Khmer) way before Muay Thai decided to showcase their art to the world. Thais claiming Muay Thai is fine, it’s like claiming the bow and arrow. All of South East Asia had an art of 8 limbs. They were all basically the same, with the only variation being between Krus, meaning teacher, or basically coaches. Muay Thai dominated the world so they deserve the fame, but just know that this art exists all over South East Asia. Thais like to say Muay Thai is different and unique, and everyone has their own art in SE Asia, but it’s all the same. Their argument are the rules are different. That’s stupid. Yeah the rules are different but it’s still the same damn martial arts. UFC and Pride have different rules but it’s still MMA.
Couldn't agree more. In fact, "Southeast Asian Kickboxing" maybe a better blanket-term for Muay Thai, Pradal Serey (Khun Khmer), and Lethwei which are almost the same minus some rules, subset arts (Khmer wrestling, standing submission rulesets, etc.), and weapons (Lethwei's headbutts, Khun Khmer's differing elbows, etc.)
FAKE INFORMATION Cambodia has always been under the rule of other nations. With independence, there was a civil war. Therefore, there is no opportunity to develop the country in any aspect. Want to be comparable with other countries, therefore use a claim method easier than starting to develop yourself
I think you unintentionally pointed out why Martial art is a thing for Cambodia. Cambodia's history of wars and colonization indeed underscores the significance of martial arts in its cultural heritage. Martial arts often emerge as a response to external pressures and the need for self-defense during times of conflict and foreign control. Look at China as an example, they had been through various foreign controls, and many martial art forms were invented. Cambodia's struggle against colonization likely led to the development of diverse fighting techniques as a means of resistance. Indeed, societies facing prolonged periods of external domination often innovate in martial arts out of necessity. These arts become not just a means of physical combat but also a repository of resilience and cultural identity. Peaceful societies may not prioritize the development of such techniques, but for those facing adversity, martial arts become a vital aspect of survival and preservation.
For those who said Bokator copy from Ongbak. Tony Jaa said it himself the martial arts he shown in his Ong Bak film was Kun Boran Khmer (Bokator). I’m not trying to making things up, he said it himself tho. The interview is still on TH-cam.
How many international fights San Kim Sean has won? How many Cambodians came to Thailand to learn Muay Thai? Are you going to refer back to the stone wall? Oh, come on !!!
The real definition of any martial-arts is for self defense. Unfortunately, they were misused. Since you bring up the subject. Do You know back around 1500's Siamese had some help with Spanish and Portuguese to "sacks" Khmer Capitol.

🎯 The amazing story of Khun Khmer 😎 Claimbodia never had anything like this before the Ong Bak movie from Thailand was released. Khun Khmer is a martial art invented to deceive the world. It was born after the Thai movie Ong Bak was released and became popular around the world 20 years ago. This movie made Claimbodians crazy about Muay Thai martial arts. The Claimbodian government has even funded to make clips that imitate the gestures in the movies to promote Khun Khmer, such as demonstration clips, teaching clips, short films, etc. Claimbodians are easily fooled, but westerners outside the stone walls of Angkor Wat are not stupid, as soon as they saw them, they knew that this was the style of Muay Thai. With that being said, Khun Khmer's real grandmaster is not the singer San Kim Saen, but Tony Jaa from Thailand ... Isn't it amazing?
Khmer Empire once had lions. Asiatic Lions. Khmer Empire was large. India still has those lions and the Bokator was created hundreds of years ago. So yes, it matches up right

Bokator is basically Cambodian Ong Bak. Kun Khmer, a Cambodian combat sport, is basically Muay thai. Its always been known as Muay thai for the very beginning in Cambodia. The whole Kun Khmer started due to the propaganda made by the Cambodian communist government and some braindead Cambodian nationalists, to claim Thai cultures as theirs. Muay thai is one of them. Thus they changed Muay thai to Kun Khmer. Show this to anyone who have trained martial art in the world, and they will say its just Muay thai. That fighting craving on the wall is actually Kalaripayattu, an Indian martial art, brought to SEA by Indian Tamils, which is common in any SEA countries. Muay thai is a result of 800 years old Thai people refining and developing it into a sport and promoted to the world today. Some interesting questions to ask about this "master" San Kim Sean. Where did he learn this Kun Khmer? What school? Who was his teacher(s)? Any fight records or fight history? I couldnt find any record at all. This is fake martial art by copying Muay Thai Boran and Tony Jaa action movie. If you search for original Bokator. You will see funny dance boxing in Khmer or Cambodia.
Your statement reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of what Bokator truly is and its historical significance. Let’s clarify some facts and correct your misconceptions. First, claiming that Bokator is "fake" or a "copy of Muay Boran" is historically inaccurate and dismissive of the evidence. Bokator is one of the oldest martial arts in the world, dating back over 1,000 years, as evidenced by the bas-reliefs at Angkor Wat, which depict warriors using techniques characteristic of Bokator, such as strikes with knees, elbows, grappling, and ground techniques. These depictions predate Muay Boran by several centuries, making it impossible for Bokator to be a copy of something that developed later. If anything, Muay Boran and other martial arts in the region owe a significant debt to the Khmer martial traditions. Second, the use of the term "dance boxing" is a misunderstanding of the role of ritualistic movement in martial arts like Bokator. The "dance" you mock is actually a **sacred ritual** and part of the martial tradition called "salutations" or ceremonial movements, similar to the Wai Kru in Muay Thai or the Ram Muay. These movements are not just for show; they are deeply rooted in respect, spiritual preparation, and even in practical demonstrations of techniques. This practice exists across many martial arts traditions worldwide and is a mark of discipline and respect, not something to ridicule. Finally, dismissing Bokator as "funny" undermines the dedication and skill required to master this complex and deadly art. Unlike modern Muay Thai, which has evolved into a ring sport, Bokator was designed for survival and warfare. It is a complete martial art, encompassing striking, grappling, submissions, and even the use of weapons. Reducing it to a mere “dance” shows a lack of understanding of its techniques and purpose. In conclusion, Bokator is a highly respected and ancient martial art that holds a significant place in Cambodian culture and Southeast Asian history. Its influence extends beyond Cambodia, and its techniques have shaped other martial traditions in the region, including Muay Boran. Instead of mocking something you clearly don’t understand, take the time to learn its history and appreciate its cultural significance. Respecting martial arts is about respecting their roots, and Bokator is a cornerstone of Southeast Asian martial heritage.

San Kim Sean teaching Hap Ki Do in the US had never spoken Bokator while living in the US
Much of Bokator's appearance is due to the film Ong-Bak: Muay Thai Warrior by actor Tony Jaa. After this film, Bokator masters began to appear.

Cha-law kha'mom.. Is bear in cambodian we have tigers look it up its really a translated tiger *** but they said lion cause it loons the same like tiger damn Cambodians lol 100% KHMER
In Southeast Asia. There's only place in Asia that Lions live is India, but I confirmed there're no any Lion in Cambodia 100%.
Cambodia does have plentiful wildlife’s before the War Genocides since the mass bombardment ,that killed half millions of Kmers people Cambodia wildlife are scarces because of the looters and the war since then wild life animals are dying and fleeing to find refuge to another neighbors Asia countries. We do have lion but in more bigger size than a lion it’s called Thor or Tor that’s why the sub Title name Bokator !! BOK= POUNCE or HIT HARD and THOR = It’s like bigger version of a lion .
There were no lion in history of Southeast Asia.. so the Bokator, the lion warrior story is for kids to believe. Or maybe just too much Ong-Bak
Of course the story can be for kids in the old days and the name stuck in our culture. What's wrong about it?

I did not know that Vietnam had its own version of Muay Thai ? What is it?
Couldn't agree more. In fact, "Southeast Asian Kickboxing" maybe a better blanket-term for Muay Thai, Pradal Serey (Khun Khmer), and Lethwei which are almost the same minus some rules, subset arts (Khmer wrestling, standing submission rulesets, etc.), and weapons (Lethwei's headbutts, Khun Khmer's differing elbows, etc.)
Bokator (Khmer pronounces "Bok Ka Tao") came from the Thai word "Bong Kan Toa" or ป้องกันตัว which means "Self-Defence".

FAKE INFORMATION Cambodia has always been under the rule of other nations. With independence, there was a civil war. Therefore, there is no opportunity to develop the country in any aspect. Want to be comparable with other countries, therefore use a claim method easier than starting to develop yourself
Actually, you don't need to convince manipulators of anything since they'll accept their own bullshit. They will also keep using harsh methods
I would love to learn this
How many international fights San Kim Sean has won? How many Cambodians came to Thailand to learn Muay Thai? Are you going to refer back to the stone wall? Oh, come on !!!
The real definition of any martial-arts is for self defense. Unfortunately, they were misused. Since you bring up the subject. Do You know back around 1500's Siamese had some help with Spanish and Portuguese to "sacks" Khmer Capitol.

😎 Claimbodia never had anything like this before the Ong Bak movie from Thailand was released.

Unesco accepted on the basis that the document submitted to them is completed with all questions answered. UNESCO's role is not to prove or disprove that the art actually existed. If the submitting state fill out the form and answer all the necessary questions (including any make up propaganda), Unesco will still grant the inscription. UNESCO assumes that nobody is going to bullshit making up their own culture (where some country take this loop hole and take advantage of) and inciting hatred between countries. Maaythai has not asked to be inscribed by UNESCO, 'cos there's no need to. All the world famous martial arts like Karate, Jujitsu, Kungfu, etc. don't need to be recognized by UNESCO. It's already well known on its own.

Exactly
Best and/or well known Muay thai fighters and/or masters are different. We usually can track their schools, their teachers/masters, and their fight history.

Bokator is just a copycat version of Muay Thai by claiming Muay Thai belongs to them but that's not true. San Kim Sean the foundation of Bokator created this art just only in 1990.
Not true he could not practiced due to the Khmer rouge
Bokator [ប្រដាល់សេរី] is an ancient battlefield martial art used by ancient by Ancient Khmer. It is one of the oldest existing fighting systems originating from Cambodia back around 12th century. However Muay-Thai, was originally called by more generic names such as toi muay or simply muay. As well as being a practical fighting technique for use in actual warfare for the 16th century’s.

@@khmerrepublic7188 There was no Bokator in 1200 A.D. or whatever; that is a lie. And the evidence that most Khmer people used is the sculpture of the Angor wall, but the truth is "Kalaripayuttu" is a martial art of ancient India, which Khmer people got it from.
@@khmerrepublic7188 @ "Bokator [ប្រដាល់សេរី] is an ancient battlefield martial art?"....... what??? it cleary say " self-defence techniques and a philosophy of non-violence " from your own history that you guy send to Unesco ,😁
-----------------------------------------
Kun Lbokator is a martial art dating back to the first century. It aims to develop the mental and physical strength and discipline of its practitioners through self-defence techniques and a philosophy of non-violence. The training of Kun Lbokator is not only about physical techniques and skills, but also about mental disciplines on how to respect nature and behave with decorum in society. Masters, some of whom are believed to have healing and protective powers, lecture their apprentices about their roles and responsibilities in society so that, once they have mastered the necessary skills, they can protect vulnerable communities and the natural environment and stand up for justice and peace. Kun Lbokator is still actively performed as part of ritual offerings to local deities and in other festive events, along with elements such as dance, music and traditional medicine. An embodiment of the country’s social, cultural and religious values, Kun Lbokator is widely practiced among Cambodians, regardless of their age, gender and educational backgrounds or status.

Nothing is to gained by arguing with “fools” ( ចោរ~សៀម) that believed their own lies. And, nothing can be gained by reasoning with very ‘ignorant’ people.
Very true. The fools are trying to claim the authenticity and origin of Muay thai but the world knows the history. Muay thai is going to European game 2023 and soon Olympic 2028. Kun Khmer, Cambodian Muay thai, is still a local sport in Cambodia 😁

@@iROChakri What make you so confident that what you have said is true and should be respected? And why not other people's as well? What make you so sure that Cambodians in the whole nation cannot argue with you? Cambodia have been through so much and still not yet fully developed due to political things. Why do you think our martial art was accepted and recognized by the UNESCO? What make you so confident to believe UNESCO is stupid to acknowledge us? Who are you to judge us so harsh with your good English? Anyway, congrats for your Mouy Thai achievement and we Cambodians applaud for that. I have many good Thai friends working abroad with me but we rarely fight over this since we all understand that we cannot say for the whole nation. I might have not enough information to make a judgement. Therefore, I stay low and do my research, listen to different sources before I scream like you. Answer yourself to what make you think other people stupid and you are the superior one out there? Find all the proof you can have, not just sources of documents from your language but the international ones as well. Next time DO NOT try to provoke us when you yourself coming straight up rude to the core to Cambodians. Show some respect and do not just hide behind your keyboard and scream victim with your good English. Cheers!
Fake haha anyone in the world know that’s muay thai
mauy thai are real fake use khmer word. muay mean= one in khmer who the real fake? UNESCO accept bokator and kun kmmer and reject muay thai in 2015??
stop it , that say "Muay" come from "One" in khmer language(that sound stupid) for Muay it come from sanskrit language it mean "bind" from Ayuthaya kingdom it has record from Simon de La Loubère that it has muay fighting when fighter fight they will use rope bind hand just like muay boran. search in youtube "Muay Boran Hand Rope Binding"
Here what “Wikipedia®” had to say: The origin of Muay Thai is subject to scholarly debates, however, many sources believed that Muay Thai is originated from Bokator which even predated the Angkorian period. The predecessor of Muay Thai itself, one of which, the Muay Khorat was developed in ancient Cambodia as confirmed by Phra Hensamahan, the first patriarch of Muay Korat.
