Burmese Boxing, also known as Lethwei, is an ancient martial art from Myanmar that can be traced back thousands of years. Foreigners often refer to Burmese boxing as “The Art of 9 Limps”
Lethwei is renowned for its extreme and brutal, as it involves using the head as a weapon, which poses a risk of causing brain damage. One of the most controversial aspects of this martial art is the rule that competitors must win by knocking out their opponents unconscious.
Within Myanmar, Lethwei remains popular among the people. However, on the international sports scene, the journey of Burmese boxing only just begun after Myanmar's opening up the country.
This episode has been filmed in 2020.

Lethwei in my opinion is the best stand up art. But there were too many things going down in that country for me to stay and train.
Thankfully more and more people are interested in Lethwei. To the people of Burma/Myanmar, I love you, and wish you the best.
Muay Thai better
Nah.
Thank you brother.
lethwei is the best but its a burden for physical health, its literally pushing someone to the limits. This shi is one notch higher than muay thai, but at the end of the day I'll still choose muay
@killerpsycho1164 the muay thai guys that went not lethwei got beat.
This sport is definitely the most brutal stand up sport. This is coming from a guy from the United States who trained and fought in Myanmar in Lethwei. I trained under Phoe Thaw, MAM Lethwei Gym, STS Gym with Zaw Zaw, KcK Kickboxing, etc. The training itself is brutal too. They made us do head stands where blood started rushing out of my nose, as a foreigner I went to the more traditional gyms where there were less farangs so the training again is so brutal in itself then the fighting is brutal people die in the ring especially in Kachin.
yeah I know, me too
Yawn 😂👍
You had to do head stands until blood started rushing out of your nose????

Dear Robloak Team Thank You for covering these warriors
It's true that Burmese and Thai Boxing have very similar lineages, however on the sports level the talent pool of pro competitors is definitely much higher on the Muay Thai's side
Cos myanmar is not open untill 2010.we are ruled by dictatoship,so its not popular at foreign and lethwei is 2000 years old and its older than thailand itself.some people misunderstanind and calling lethwei to mwaythai with headbutt.

Only recently has the sport gain popularity but my grandfather always respected this art due to the experience of encountering one as well. It is actually much more dangerous if utilized by their military personnel as it is executed without the rules governed by the sports version.
Why would you want Myanmar’s military to utilise it?
@wunthaaung6340 whats so bad about it?
@@commanderfarsight2351 the Myanmar military is very horrible. They committed a coup which means that they took over the government by force. Currently, it is in a dictatorship like state. The military is killing lots of our people all the time, our women and children. They also torture us.

Burmese boxing, this is very similiar to Muay Boran. Pretty much Muay Thai is just adapted to the western ring rules, mean while Muay Boran is the real art of " Thai Boxing " which utlizes all 9 limbs and was originally made for war in the past.

Probably since this video was made, the biggest pioneer in the world towards the western introduction of Lethwei is fighter David Leduc. He presents a TH-cam channel named "Lethwei Tuesday" and has recently acquired the right to host Lethwei fights in Europe, so people can really see what this art is about.❤
David Leduc is mid tier at best, there is a reason he only fights in the open weight division and against low tier western opponents.
@@jpjbassking Hi JP. I had no idea this was the case as I have only ever seen his fights as he displayed them on his channel🤙
@@Akuma.69 100%, he was also an exceptional average Muay Thai fighter.
@@jpjbassking Yep. I'm burmese and I agree with you. I mean I like him, he is a quick Lethwei learner and also a business man but there were a lot of good burmese fighters who call him out to challenge or to do a rematch but he dodged and went to fight western fighters.
Had his start in MT, couldn't hack it against his own weight bracket so he went to Lethwei to challenge far lower weight opponents in open weight. He's constantly badmouthing MT and Thailand in general and has the audacity to call himself "The king of Lethwei". David Le Douche is more like it.
I wish the video showed more of headbutts being used in fights. This presentation of Lethwei was a bit too sanatized.
Can you do a documentary on the arakan martial arts
RIP Too Too, your will lives on!
this looks like muay thai. The way they through their kicks, using the hip to generate force and swing the leg like a bat, is very similar to muay thai.
Different rules
This is because Burma and Thailand had been fighting for the longest time in the past. They have been sharing similar cultures and everything.
Burmese boxing is a raw version of Thai boxing, while Thai boxing is a more standardized version of Burmese boxing. I hope this makes sense to you. Both are the same sports with same techniques and traditions. The only difference is, Thai boxing has abandoned a headbutt because this technique is banned in most organizations around the world. Thus in order to promote Thai boxing to the world, the Thai had no chance but to make this technique illegal. Once a headbutt is more widely accepted in other world organizations, Thai boxing might again have a headbutt technique included.
sport wont ever become popular unless they drop the headbutting but then it will just be muay thai.
Tactics strategies and rules are still different than muay thai
The goal is not to become legal in every countries around the world. The sport is already legal in 10 countries. Its already famous worldwide. It doesn't want to do the same as Muaythai.
Do you have like 30 seconds to wake up and continue fighting in muay Thai?
Ion think so the head buts are apart of this sport
No, its uunique to Lethwei @@unsponsrd

Burma and Thailand had been fighting for the longest time in the past. If UK didnt come, we would still not know who between these two countries would come out victorious. However, the Burmese were mostly invaders, while the Thais were mostly defenders.

Well there are definitely more things and techniques left behind when military trained muay boran became the Muay Thai we see today.
@@faggabumm If I had to bet between a today muay thai fighter vs an ancient muay boran warrior, I would put money on the muay thai dude. Today most muay thai techniques are very refined and proved to work and they're foundation in MMA (along with boxing). In the past, I think most muay boran (and other ancient traditional warriors) couldnt even fight well. We've seen how muay thai fighters murdered traditional kung fu masters back in 19th. Practice makes perfect. All these fancy "deadly" techniques which have never been practiced (unless you are allowed to kill people who help you, while you're horning your deadly techniques) rarely work unfortunately. Its just that in the past, most people didnt know how to fight. Most likely they just threw each other around and did some sloppy knee and elbow strikes.
Lethwei is 2000 years old and invented from pyu era of myanmar and its older than thailand itself.the root of mwaythai came from 15 centurary when great burmese king invaded and took over all thai territory and he bought thai prince naruseen to burmese palace as his adaptoed son.that prince learn burmese war art and tatics.lethweis is one of them.later he ran back to thai after burmese king bayint naung dead.he teach burmese art to thai people to rebel and fight toungoo empire of burmese.thats where mway came from.Thai never win against burmese for 2000 years.
@@yethuaung1855 Lethwei can be 2000 years or 10000 years old. It doesnt matter. Lethwei has Boxing in it and Boxing only came to Southeast Asia less than 500 years ago. This already proves that your today Lethwei is not the same as your original 2000 years ago. So yeah ... we can all agree that today Lethwei, Kun Khmer, and Muay laos all got influenced and came from Muay thai. Thats why the best fighters from Southeast Asian martial arts usually come from Thailand.

They have strong chins I think and that is incredible.
If only they started to market this like 20 years ago people would've like it especially with the headbutts but now in the modern age nope. Now I'd prefer to watch the ONE FC's version of Muay Thai their ruling has evolved so many times that it makes the sport entertaining to watch.

Burmese fighters are in general as a whole compared to their thai counterparts tougher and fearless because the life conditions in Burma are much more harscher than in Siam
Lmao
Did you know that in the past, Thai boxers used to fight with Burmese boxers a lot? But there is a tragedy because Burmese boxers and Thai boxers often die in the ring. Because in the past, boxers would use ropes to wrap their hands instead of gloves. When the incident occurred, a boxer died on the stage. Thailand therefore finds a way to prevent the boxer from being in danger of death. And has continued to develop until Muay Thai is a sport that is known all over the world.

The poorer the country, the more brutal is their fight sports. Coz life is cheaper. Sad but a fact.
Leithwei is actually Muay Thai that spread to Myanmar 250 years ago after the sack of Ayuthaya in 1769 by the Burmese king. The Burmese king saw the values of Muay Thai and forced Thai (Siamese) prisoners to teach the art to the Burmese. It was further developed in Myanmar (Burma at the time) as a form of bare knuckle boxing. In fact, Muay Thai itself remained a bare knuckle fighting sport that allowed headbutts until around 1940s. It had to evolved and adopted glove-wearing of the western tradition because so many fighters died during the fights. Originally, Muay Thai used to be called “the art of nine weapons” (nava awuth or นวอาวุธ) because headbutts used to be legit (among other brutal techniques). But today people call it “the art of eight limbs” because headbutts have been disused in the ring-sport version of Muay Thai. In muay boran traditions, such as muay chiya, headbutts and other dangerous techniques (like eye gauging) continue to be taught.
Actually NO, the word "lethwei" come from " lethyay/လက်ရေး or thaing သိုင်း" (hand combat without weapons). Way earlier than that.
It is ancient attacking technique which is used in guerrilla warfare. That includes headbutt, slapping, striking, legkick, takedown, wrestling or Naban, chocking, ... all kind of form. Mostly used it to surprise attack. They even used it against Mogol in battles.
Among the city and villages, people used that word "lethyay" and held match to entertain people and to showoff some technique. They also used to entertain the king.
Any proof for what you wrote? Lethwei is originated in Burma ( Myanmar ) 2000 years ago and it was just the striking part of Bando ( Burmese hand to hand martial arts ). In Bando, Lethwei , grappling , wrestling, weapon defense are included. Bando ( Hand to hand ) and Banshay ( Weapon systems ) combined are called '' Thaing '' , a complete Myanmar martial art. Myanmar has 135 ethnic groups and each has it's own style of Martial arts. Don't go read some make up histories and spread the fake knowledge. Myanmar is very poor and unknown to the rest due to British colonization , civil war ( watch recent millitary coup ) , it's culture and heritage are dying and we don't need any more help.
Muay Thai don't want Myanma Let Wei to famous than their Muay Thai. Come on.
Lethwei has existed since the Pyu period and the Pagan period။ You should be ashamed of your jealousy
@@Lawwah-xv1mb
Pyu and Pagan were heavily influenced by ancient Indian Culture. For example, A Naw Ya Thar and Kyan Sit Tha wore the clothes like ancient Brahmin culture. Same as Myanmar youth are wearing western fashion now a days.
All martial arts including Kung Fu and Let Wei were originated from Kerela of southern India. Buddhism and ancient Indian culture had heavy influence on Pyu and Pagan Periods. Pyu Kingdom was earlier than Pagan.
For example, flying Knee from Lethwei was called as Hanuman cross the sea in Khmar, Laos and Thai. Except Vietnam, all south east asian nations have full contact Lethwei or Muay boxing. In Khmar or Cambodia, it is called as Pradal Serey. In Laos it is called as Muay Laos.
Hanuman was a Monkey God of Hindu epic Ramayana. In Myanmar, it is called as YAMA ZADAW. Dathagiri was a villain.
