It’s nice to have a morning routine, especially when you’re retired. I have my cup of Irish breakfast tea first, as I sit at the kitchen table, while my old Boxer boy sleeps on his bed, under the table, by my feet. Later, it’s a cup of coffee. I use a stovetop percolator, and there’s a certain calming routine even to putting it together, and then smelling it wafting through the house, as it percolates.☕️ I scroll through a few of my favorite TH-cam channels (yours included😊), read a little, then eventually move on to a few chores and such. I’m a major homebody, so I only go out and about once a week for necessities.
Molly is always so busy!😊 It’s fun to see her popping in and out of the video.🤗

It feels like a gift to self, after all those years of giving my time to emloyers. I could do with a bit more routine these days. With 4 kids and elderly parents, I have more unpredictability than I care to have some days. I need to have a rebalance in my life.

Phew, that was tough, when the children were small! I made sure to get up early, fill the washing machine, process the dried clothes from the drier to have it free for the next load! Set my percolator and emptied the dishwasher! Then I had the good feeling of having set the day for success! It feels, somehow, like self care! No spa day, but you have really supported your future self! That is a good feeling with a sip of coffee and a, yet, quiet house!
The only real moment of real self care I had, when the kids were little, was my 15 minute reset coffee pause after lunch - about 2 pm! They knew that was my break, their kindergarten teacher had a break, I HAD A BREAK!
Plan in small self care units like a coffee break or a 10 min foot bath, and make it a routine! A walk around the block in the evening! Everybody will respect that, if you genuinely feel entitled to it!

Hello Nigel, You have described the balance between routine and unpredictability perfectly. We need a little of both. My other half and I are retired and we have a morning routine much like yours and we thrive on it. We have a peaceful morning cuppa, tea for him and coffee for me. We always use the same mug. His says ' father of the bride' and mine says 'grumpy old woman'. It's a perfect routine to start an unpredictable day. Peace and love ❤

One of the joys of my older age is that I allow myself to take as long as I want each morning to start the day. I always wake up earlier than my husband so I quietly brew the coffee, sit in my comfy chair while i sip the coffee and watch my favorite You Tube creators. I download from the night before each post and save them for this morning time. Then when my husband wakes , I make breakfast while he sips his coffee. He gets all my interested attention to talk about whatever is on his mind . Only after this easy morning do we attend to tasks. We stay busy with whatever the day holds. In the evening, after supper, we stream a favorite detective or mystery series from Prime that we both enjoy. Tuck in bed whenever I please with a book and sleep. Those little rituals help us manage any unpredictable things that arise.

One way I've found to add unpredictability to life is to sleep in a tent during the warmer months. I like to wake up to the sounds of birds, fall asleep to the sound of wind in the trees, or wake up to rain on the tent. Every night is an adventure.

Routines give me some stability in life! Getting up, in the morning, I go to the basement and start the washing machine! That way I sure get it done! It will beep annoyingly persistent later, making sure I think of emptying!
Then I brew my coffee and empty the dishwasher, that I had put on after dinner as part of my evening clean of the kitchen!
Implementing that little habit of starting those two machines was definitely my game changer in family life! One machine a day, even Sunday morning, when life was crazy!
I love school days, set meal times, the children's sport schedules! Setting the Slow Cooker up with 10 portions of stew on Wednesday after shopping on the farmers' market!
I hate long weekends with late sleeping teens and random sporting sessions in the p.m. , e.g. me having to improvise tea and push dinner to later!
I hate, hate, hate those 'Rot Days' after Christmas!!!
Yes, I get to lay on the sofa with a good book - but we cut out on walks and activities and eat too much yummy unhealthy food!😏
