Yes, please do a follow-on video. It looks like you have gavanic corrision issues. Remember carbon is an electrical conductor. Start looking for this issue. Also, contact the designer and loop him in. Often things are not built as designed and it would be in your best interest to figure out if the builder took any liberties.
Mine thoughts as well, there is no other explanation on why there is that much rust that quickly. I see “Sailing with the Wynns” have the same issue with their new HH Catamaran, rust took hold really quickly due to the the stray current turning their Cat into a floating battery.
What a disaster. I feel with you. I’d like to love this Rapido trimaran. But this is very disappointing. Thanks for sharing your experiences. Rapido, it is unacceptable to delay warranty work! Sorry, no other advice than what you already got. Post more videos to put some pressure on Rapido. Apparently this is the only way to get attention from the factory.
I am a boat builder and had a orma 67 and can tell you that the rudder system is going to break again the loads at the speeds that those boat cruises are no joke get some one to design and build a good robust system steering is the most important system on a boat.
@@PN_48 yes if you look at the rudder system on the orma and compare it to this boat is looks like a joke. I know it is two different animals but the forces on speeds over 20 knt are the same .
@@lateralthinking86But then, M&M did design it and I’d trust them as being pretty knowledgeable in this field. It all just seems a bit weird y’know? Why did the owner keep sailing if he knew the rudder had play in it? At 20kts it doesn’t take a lot of vibration to rapidly cause catastrophic failure.
My wife and I were thiunking about ordering a 40 this spring; after seeing this I think we will pass - what a disappointment. It took me almost a year to convince her and ... this ..
I've been a boater for 50 years, and seen many new builders with a new brand and revolutionary techniques appear and cause great heartache as their stuff fails and the boats become worthless derelicts. Walk around a large marina and look at the names on the older boats still happily plying the water. Those makers did not break new ground with construction. Sure, their boats are heavier and a knot slower as a result, but their hulls are free of stress cracks after 30 years. The parts on their boats are heavier and clunky looking, but can be unscrewed, maintained, and put back together. Fellow seafarers take note - a boat is a nightmare of broken dreams if it cannot sustain the rigors of the sea and if it is not built for decades of life against those stresses by an experienced builder. Stop buying these fancy new designs by unproven brands. I agree with the other person who said that entire rudder/steering system is not up to oceanic standards. It looks like something you'd see on a boat half that size. Big trouble's a-coming.
Yes I will also be surprised if that glass job on the rudder bearing doesn't break again... This is why I have a Hatteras 40 years old and still going strong, Sorry for them as that boat will more than likely be in a dump long before in reaches 20 years
Trimarans aren’t revolutionary. They’ve been around for 100s of years and carbon for 20 years (more?). Where do you stand on the horse and cart vs the automobile argument?
Carbon fiber is not proven in long term applications. Many fiberglass boats are still afloat after 50 or 60 years which is about as long as these boats have been built. At that time, it was a wager on the future too - worked out. Lets hope it goes the same for carbon… although there is the problem with carbon reacting with stress failure to very little, sometimes even not visible punctual damage.
Yeah, of course, go for it! It‘s really interesting to see (not only with your boat) what all this „high quality“, high price and high speed multihull manufacturers are delivering for the money. Wish you all the best man and that all of your warranty issues will be solved to 110% 🙏🙏
That's galvanic corrosion. It's a boat wrecking issue. Looks like the designers and/or builders neglected to consider that unlike glass, carbon fiber is conductive. It can be fixed but its a major retrofit to electrically isolate and/or bond every piece of metal either tp a sacrificial anode or an energized ICCP circuit.
Carbon boats ALL have the same issues, electrolysis. Carbon is such a great conductor, just add salt water and hay presto, a little battery that will corrode anything touching it. You'd be better off with a normal E glass rudder stock with basalt reinforcement. Might be heavier but salt water won't create any corrosion issues. As for the seal on the steering ram, I think the Vagabonds had the same problem, they also had deck bonding issues at the top of the dagger board case, just keep your eyes peeled and document EVERYTHING.
while its out of the water and your waiting on rapido i would check around the mast stepping from above and below for major cracking. La vagabond did a video or two on how they almost lost their mast due to major structural damage. If you don’t know theirs is the same boat and under warranty as well.
La vag also had that sea water flood of their engine because the water trap was not high enough above sea level. A careless and expensive mistake by Rapido. An indicator of other troubles to come.
@@epicgamer785 Riley did make a face about it. I guess you don't want to completely trash your relationship with your builder until it gets to an irretrievable low.

Ohhhhhh man, give them the boat back, I’m sorry you gotta go through this, but thanks for sharing, please keep sharing. The boat looks like it was put together with sticky back plastic and hope, I’m shocked.
Similar observations as the la vagabonde rapido. Lack of systems engineering, poor build quality and lots of latent defects. Appreciate you posting. Would love to see a follow up video.
Looking at the response to the La Vagabonde team when they had issues, having strong public exposure and TH-cam following certainly helps. As long as you've provided Rapido a fair opportunity to respond, and in return if they fail to deliver, I would go back to them and discuss the consequences of inaction and you going global. I would certainly be ask Rapido for the warranty clock to be reset as it sounds like they are the ones causing the delay and not providing a fair opportunity to sea trial the vessel in the 12 month period. Rudders and self-steering systems should be built bomb proof, especially on high performance yachts. Good luck!
@@PerformanceTrimaran don’t request it. Tell them it’s happening, and that failure to act on their part will result in further cost increases to be born by them. Act swiftly because there’s a good chance they’re broke, or about to be.

Not at all. The issue was resolved for SLV long before the video came out and they were already underway to Japan when they decided to post the “drama” video. They’d even confirmed to Rapido prior to the video in writing that everything was a-ok… so really, their “clout” is basically non-existent. A good shout on the warranty extension request however, and one that a solicitor could easily request.
Upside, this channel will grow exponentially due to the other Rapido owner, as others have mentioned I feel a written warranty reset is a given, perhaps Rapido need a Thailand base as this is where most of their product will complete their real sea trials. This was always going to be a huge experiment building a vessel this edgy for the cruising market, not easy to maintain a racer on a budget.
Yes, follow ups : ) And do audio narration on the video, not just subtitles. Make it personal. Does not have to be perfect, just be yourself. You don t have to have La Vagabond video production levels. Great info. Yes, the repairs don t look very pretty, but just work with them and make it an adventure. Make them extend your warranty by 1 more year and add some freebees for the missed 8 months sailing : )
I am a sailor, live full time on my catamaran. I can’t quite believe the performance shown at 1:04. 19+kts on 3.1kts of true wind. The sea state hints at higher winds. Those instruments might be another issue to address. 😅
Having seen the construction and design issues on this boat with my own eyes, I was and still am shocked at how badly the factory is treating you. And it makes me wonder about the other vessels out there - do they have these issues? Certainly the Sailing Lavagabond crew showed glimpes of similar issues with delamination, etc. Seems there's a pattern emerging and it's not good. I hope you get more visibility on this and that drives the factory to do the right thing ASAP!
@@gregorymatthies5297 Riley is a successful entrepreneur approaching 2 million subscribers, and in his own way he is quite logical, good at networking, works hard, makes and executes plans. Cruising is expensive on such a big boat even if they are somewhat frugal.
Just unbelievable a manufacturer would be foolish enough to act this way, in my long experience humans behave in weird ways, Great companies are built on service and quality.
If I were you I would contact the designers Morelli & Melvin and ask them if the rudder mecanics are what they designed and specified to the yard. A yard that leaves you out there without fixing the problems no longer cares about their reputation, however the designers do. I am pretty sure the rudders is not build how it was specified by the designers and from the outside looks way to light (I am a naval architect). Also if you go for a legal battle having the designers with you will certainly help you. Good luck
100% respect for the M&M design and analysis team. It would be so worth including an M&M rep to review the repair approach and a QA guy during the rebuild. Nasty start to this beautiful baby's life.😢 Prayers for resuscitation and successful recovery. 🙏
That is unbelievable. It is one thing there being a problem but waiting so long for a fix is unforgivable. I would be demanding they take the boat back and give me a full refund. So glad I built my own 37' Farrier trimaran. 1000's of offshore miles over nearly 8 years - zero problems.
At this point, I would likely get a lawyer involved. I dont know if/how you are ensured legally but you should have someone figure out how contracts in Hong Kong work regarding the expected result versus the actual result of your purchase. It seems to me that there are a lot more mistakes than just the rudder, and I think it is great that you document it this way. You should keep doing that, and keep all the footage safely backed up. Additionally to your legal path, I would recommend reaching out to Sailing La Vagabonde. They are one of - if not the biggest Influencers in the yacht cruising community and they are also customers of rapido. Them reacting to your issues will likely put more pressure on Rapido to get their shit sorted, and especially if you end up trying to pull out of the purchasing contract, their story with their own boat (which also had a lot of issues when leaving the factory) will give you and your team more leverage when it comes to "factory error" vs "user error". I highly recommend you pursue both ways - legal advise and pressure, as well as public opinion pressure through other, bigger influencers in this space
Doubtful. SLV’s Rapido purchase resulted in very few genuine enquiries to the company and zero orders. Zero. They have very little sway with the company, especially with how they threw them under the bus with their widely debunked “our boat is falling apart” video.
No QA at the factory they are happy to take your money but there designs are sub standard. Keep posting and put pressure on them to build a seaworthy boat!

Galvanic corrosion. I got a reminder that carbon is a conductor when I had an aluminum mast base casting collapse under a used carbon fiber mast I had acquired a month earlier for my Prindle 19 beach catamaran. In rebuilding the mast base, I used G10 as an insulator. If you've got this issue at the rudder, you may also have it in other components such as the standing rigging or basically just the hardware holding the boat together. The rudder could very well be just the start of the problems. Maybe get a good surveyor to go over the entire boat with the results being to have an attorney work on getting at least some of your money back on a boat you return. Good luck.
Glad you shared. Company is being very visible on social media, you need to do the same with their challenges. They appear to be trying but fundamental layup issues are very concerning. Just time before this appears in the smaller boats as well.

I feel for you situation! Good luck with the repairs . SV Skoiern IV
As someone in the boatbuilding world, that rudder cassette needs to be completely replaced. The loads on it are immense and the failure seems to be delaminated and/or bond-line failures. These are almost always because of poor surface preparation. It is difficult to undo this kind of poor manufacturing process. Really wasn't able to see what the rusted components are, perhaps rudder stock? If ao they need to switch to scandvik 316L seamless HSS. Probably about 100/foot but always works. I would also look very very carefully at any other visible signs of delaminating components
SLV had problems with their centerboard case, as mentioned by others, but they had that part of the boat customized, so perhaps Rapido couldn't do enough testing to solve the issues during the construction phase. On the other hand, they (Riley & Elayna) had Erik Berzins design a new rudder, which Riley is very impressed with. It hasn't failed and seems to have a ton of versatility. Please do publish a follow up to this video, it will be interesting to see how things go. BTW, the aft spaces look to have been built by some company other than the one that built La Vagabonde III.

Was pleased to see a video of a rapido sailing other than vagabond but realizing soon this was a cry for help video, i count the days when this video will be taken off line and you get the support you one expect from the builder. I can make up from your video that they removed the terrible installed hydraulic system with a mechanical push pull system, good idea specially as the hydraulic system had carbon steel instead of marine grade steel components good fir a road digger but not for a seagoing water craft. Wondering what subcontractors the yard uses. Just keep pushing and hire a good marine surveyor to help fight your case

Poor you! How bitterly disappointing. Thanks for sharing this story. Definitely yes to follow up videos. I guess you need a Yellow one to get any customer service. 😢.
First - definitely do a followup video. Please provide commentary so that we can understand better what's happening. 2nd - demand they extend warranties on EVERYTHING that has a one year warranty, at least another year, whether it's their product or not. You need a realistic opportunity to check all materials and systems. 3rd - make life absolute hell for the builder. "If you don't ask for what you want, you get what you deserve." Call them every day, write emails, get other expert opinions. You've had a few in the comments section - see if you can get a naval architect, engineer or designer involved. The screws they are using on the top of that rudder cassette look WAY too small to me, but I am no engineer, just a boat repair and restoration nerd for the last 40 years. And I don't work on boats that large or have those kinds of loads. It's a different world. So sorry this is happening to you. It just seems the norm for new boats - Ruby Rose, Gone with the Winns, and La Vagabonde, to name a few. I realize it's complicated, but for the money, why can't they do better?!
I follow a few sailing channels, you seem to have as many issues with a new boat, as with a used one. Keep making the videos, keep talking to Rapido and also take legal advice. Other high profile owners, we all know who I'm talking about, seem to have a direct phone line to the right people to get things fixed. Good luck.
This is fantastic advertising for them, first LA Vagabond now you, hopefully they will fix things but hey, it's your time you are being robbed of and that has no ceiling with regards to costs. Personally I would be nice and hope that they resolve things, a dispute across country borders is tricky to say the least. Good luck, it sums to be a fantastic craft worth fixing for sure.
Definitely keep posting. This is a great design, but the build quality is an issue. Buying a brand New boat is always a issue until one has everything sorted out. Sailors, potential buyers, builders designers and their distribution network must all be informed of these problems.
À follow-up video would be very helpful for any futur buyers and would give Rapido a chance to explain their point of view. Vagabonde had some major issues as well which were rapidly repaired but I feel that their very popular vlog may have something to do with it. So keep showing what’s happening and good luck
A comment from the Sailing Anarchy forum where your boat is being discussed (if you haven't seen it already): "I would not trust that "repair" They have two ss plates top/bottom of the cassette, almost all the loading is now being held by the bolts. Flanges for bolts not thick enuff, and no attempt to make top & bottom of flanges parallel so bolts load properly And bolts that were used are threaded for the full length, so the threads will act as saw blades as the cassette starts to move. Hello, you should have a talk with "sailing la vagabonde", i think they own a rapido too , they get more than a million subscribers, this weights a lot when discussing about notoriety for the builder. and they had problems too (rapidly handled by the boat builder).
Just for additional context I would add that Vagabonde got exposed for faking and/or greatly exaggerating issues with their boat for views. The 'critical hull crack' was cosmetic issues. Hence it was such a "big deal" one video and the next they sailed to Japan as if nothing had happened.
I don't know the details of their issue, but I did check my dagger-board case after seeing their video and it looked okay. Although, the boat has not been sailed much at all yet. There is no exaggeration in my video, if anything, I feel it's quite the opposite.

you make sure that they finish job up to new spec and that they extend the warranty for the same duration of the waiting period of approx 8 months, make sure you document and video all of this
That’s good advice, thanks. At one point, they actually asked me to not be around while they did the repairs. I felt that was a bit concerning, what do you think, is that normal?
@@PerformanceTrimaranWhy would they object to your oversight if they have nothing to hide? I would insist on being present for any remedial work done. You need to be very firm with them!
What owners rep did you use while building the boat? Did they do a survey prior to acceptance? What does the surveyor say now? Without these answers, it’s hard to imaging this is a real situation and should be considered suspect.
I would employ a lawyer who would start legal action for them to take the boat back. If there is a warranty time limit you need to give them a list of all the complaints from your lawyer before the warranty runs out. I would contact Vagabond & tell them your situation.
I'll admit that I don't *know* what do to. I have zero experience with stuff that is this expensive... But even La Vagabonde went public about it... I don't follow all their channels so I may very well have missed stuff, but they did talk about this publicly before they released videos about it. It's here on TH-cam. The channel is called: "The Ocean Cruisers - Sailing Voyager", and the video is titled: "Riley & Elayna - Sailing La Vagabonde talk about their life!" They talk about it at around the 20:36 mark in that video. Maybe that can help guide your decision. But seems Rapido handled their case completely different to yours. La Vagabonde seem to have gotten help immidately. Also maybe consider starting a thread on the Sailing Anarchy Forum. There's already some discussion there about your boat based on the video you have posted here.

@@SailingLaVagabonde Carbon fiber has been around since the 70s and used in boat building extensively since the early 80s.

Wish you all the best man and that all of your warranty issues will be solved to 110% 🙏🙏
Thanks for your feedback!
100% correct , So many people dont realise Carbon is not the miracle its made out to be IF you dont know its drawbacks > Conductivity in seawater .
Absolutely, you need to post a follow-up video. Especially for all the other owners out there.
while its out of the water and your waiting on rapido i would check around the mast stepping from above and below for major cracking. La vagabond did a video or two on how they almost lost their mast due to major structural damage. If you don’t know theirs is the same boat and under warranty as well.
La vag had center board casing split. With you it's the rudder. Two super crucial areas failing. Its mildly terrifying. Let us see more.
Lavaga just brushed it off acting like its no big deal their brand new boat is falling apart its funny
@@russmarkham2197 True. Not sure how to get this done. They already have build a few. Wonder how the exhaust build on La vag is different to this one?

regardless of the outcome I would be talking to lawyers. I'm fairly sure it wasn't a cheap boat and you should expect better. this definitely needs exposure.

Good luck!
I have made a request of a warranty extension, it seems like a fair request, but I don’t recall hearing back about that.

lol, yeah, thanks for catching that, its on the list.
Rapido has achieved a new level of brand damage with this poor standard of build and non rectification.
I’m curious as well, any others with a Rapido here?

If I were you I would contact the designers Morelli & Melvin and ask them if the rudder mecanics are what they designed and specified to the yard. A yard that leaves you out there without fixing the problems no longer cares about their reputation, however the designers do. I am pretty sure the rudders is not build how it was specified by the designers and from the outside looks way to light (I am a naval architect). Also if you go for a legal battle having the designers with you will certainly help you.

It would be so worth including an M&M rep to review the repair approach and a QA guy during the rebuild.
Nasty start to this beautiful baby's life.😢

That sounds like good advice. Thank you for watching and for your detailed comment.
Doubtful. SLV’s Rapido purchase resulted in very few genuine enquiries to the company and zero orders. Zero. They have very little sway with the company, especially with how they threw them under the bus with their widely debunked “our boat is falling apart” video.

Good luck.

Go to town on the builder . Thanks for posting as I was going to purchase one , no more :)

Just for additional context I would add that Vagabonde got exposed for faking and/or greatly exaggerating issues with their boat for views. The 'critical hull crack' was cosmetic issues.
Hence it was such a "big deal" one video and the next they sailed to Japan as if nothing had happened.

I'll admit that I don't *know* what do to. I have zero experience with stuff that is this expensive... But even La Vagabonde went public about it... I don't follow all their channels so I may very well have missed stuff, but they did talk about this publicly before they released videos about it. It's here on TH-cam. The channel is called: "The Ocean Cruisers - Sailing Voyager", and the video is titled: "Riley & Elayna - Sailing La Vagabonde talk about their life!"
