Buying a Rapido 60 sailboat-- warranty repairs. Hardstand Progress?
2024 Rapido 60 Cruisers version sailing trimaran. Warranty repairs on a 60' Multihull sailboat, including rudder casing replacement.
patreon.com/PerformanceTrimaran
Rapido has come back to Thailand to install a new rudder casing. The repairs are now underway after some long delays, but progress is underway.
A little more background on the delays. After Rapido left from their first repair visit, I was not satisfied with the repairs, I wanted to be able to trust it would last. I spoke to the builder and made an offer to build a new rudder case, the one that was supposed to be included in the original build, but for some reason was not delivered. The offer I made was to be paid after all the repairs were completed, including other warranty items. This was an important part of my offer, as already so much time has been wasted waiting. This offer was made in July, they said it would take 30 days to complete. The offer to be paid was to deduct the hardstand storage after the 30 day period they said it would take to repair. This was also important to being sure things would be repaired timely and I would limit expenses that were beyond my control.
The repair workers came back in September to being installing a new rudder case, a new Hydraulic steering ram, and changes to the layout of the steering. They left before completion, while it was raining, I did not expect they would be gone for so long. I was then asked to pay for the full offer amount before they would return. I could not agree with this, what if the work was not done satisfactorily. They also were not deducting the storage as was in my good will offer, so my expenses were adding up.
I then asked them to repair and install the old rudder if they could not honor the original offer. There was also a shipping bill they said I would be obligated to pay, but would not present an invoice when asked for how much it was.
This is the "Cruisers Version" as they call it. The bulkheads are carbon, but areas of the hull are fiberglass, to my understanding. It was previously being prepared as a powered charter boat, but that sale did not complete. Since some renovations had to be made to it, it was then offered to me at a discount, and was to be ready in 3 months, back in 2021. The boat was not completed until 2024 (still costing 7 figures in the end) and I feel it was portrayed to me as it being a new boat, but conditions of the final project were not as expected.
They have now returned to complete the repairs. This video only highlights some of the work that is underway.
I'll share more of the story in future videos.
Thank you to Rapido for returning to complete the work!

Buying a Rapido 60 sailboat-- big mistake? Still stuck on the hardstand
มุมมอง 98K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
2024 Rapido 60 Cruisers version sailing trimaran. Warranty delays on a new 60' Multihull sailboat, including rudder damage. Sailing from HCMC, Vietnam to Phuket, Thailand. Haul-out and repair work. The top speed on this boat during this first voyage was 27 knots. It sails really well, but it's been left in disrepair. When will Rapido finish the warranty work on this boat? patreon.com/Performanc...
So disappointing that a new boat would have these issues. Waiting 3 months was so unacceptable for major flaws like this. having these issues can take the joy out of having a new boat with plans ahead.
Shocking build quality and using inferior materials. I used to be a PM for Southern Spars making masts, booms, EC3/6 rigging, etc for these and other boats.....many QC horror stories at SS to. Its all about greed.....maximising profits for the investors and screwing the customer as much as possible. My 2 pence worth..... stick with rod rigging, forget locks, etc. Keep it simple and if you are buying a vessel.....make sure your contract absolutley screws the builder/seller and have a Bank held Garantee for 12 to 24 months + plus seperate insurances covering all possible build issues and professional repairs fully covered anywhere in the world + ALL associated costs......get this built into the sale price and make sure of the underwriters......force the squeeze on the builder/seller
The preparation for the lamination repairs is awful, substandard and wont last so therefore is dangerous. The mounting on the lower bottom bearing is not laminated to the hull correctly and anecdotally is too light or not braced athwartships correctly. Bad PR by Rapido.
Your fundamental mistake is demanding money from them. No warranty from a boat builder will ever cover paying you money. Send them an email to say they have 60 days to effect repair at no cost to you (for the repair) and if they don’t then you will have a stronger case.
I am glad you appear to have some meaningful progress.😀👍
What a terrible situation to be in. I have nothing but sympathy for you but ‘.sympathy does not utter any parsnips’. Only you can decide what to do, but for all practical purposes you are in a classic dilemma. Do you stick with the vessel and Rapido and encourage them to do the right thing in providing what you have paid for - or seek to exit the contract - litigating if necessary. No easy or glib answer. I think most folks who take an interest in the industry recognise the familiar ‘ingredients’ of the story. Please continue to post updates and I wish you the very best of luck in achieving a satisfactory outcome.
@PerformanceTrimaran What was your previous boat? Did you buy the 60 new or used? Looks like there is a lot of corrosion for a one month old boat. I would have done a lot of DD if was to pay $1.8 mil for such a lovely toy! I think you should ask for help from other naval designers and builders, while suing Rapido in Hong Kong, if feasible.
I'm very glad that Rapido stepped up to the plate and took care of everything. That must have taken them a long time trouble shooting the issue and designing a new system. That might have been part of the time issue. Hopefully everything is solid and will hold up for years to come with no issues.
I personally would have shopped around on the island got a temporary fix sailed it to a better island like Australia and got proper work done waiting all that time i bet that new stearing bracket fibreglassed in with snap off i pray it doesn't but i bet it will good luck then mate
I see the END of Rapido muy muy rapido 😂
Gud ting no cheap - cheap ting no gud
The moral of this story is... Don't buy your boat (or anything else) from commies. They build their boats Rapido (fast in Spanish) without attention to quality. Sure, building your boat in EU or USA is more expensive, but you get what you pay for.
waiting a percentage of your life waiting on something deserved or not is crazy.
That horrible soundtrack!
What a gentleman!
They might build a good canoe, you went to the wrong people.
Why are parts of the boat already rusting in the inside? Thought the boat is fairly new, no?
ASK THEM TO EXTEND THE WARRANTY FOR ALL THE TIME YOU HAVE WAITED FOR THEM.
RAPIDOS MAY BE BUILT FOR SPEED BUT NOT LONGEVITY.
I was seriously considering Rapido. I now will never think about a boat that is not built in the US or europe. I would have done just as you have done. I know that your approach has had one or more buyer think twice about Rapido. When I looked at the Neel tri I found the same lax approach to the quality of the build.
are you sure there isnt stray current on the boat, carbon mixed with stainless is a bad combo of dissimilars, and the 1 month corrosion sure looked serious, i imagine there would be other corrosions you didn't notice, or couldn't
I'll buy it from you!!!
You have more patience than me cause after a month I would've gotten another crew and fix it and send them the bill
never buy anything like that built in the third world
The whole thing looks to fragile for the loads involved.
No narrative, confusing content.
Money back, and look for a save ship like outremer or mc 😂
that is what you get when you buy junk? the sales people saw you coming your nightmare is a death trap
it looks like you may have a stray current problem. Also that rudder is a horrific design seriously
Firstly, I feel for you and have no words. Secondly. I was looking at the 50 after seeing this, I'll save myself a trip and heartache. Yes you should make a part 2, 3 or as many as you need to publicly shame Rapido. You should also seek legal counsel. Most of what you have shown looks like a back yard job not a professional boat building company. Even the new works look somewhat dodgy. Personally I'm a ex-boatbuilder, and have never classed myself as a very good one but none of my work has ever looked as dodgy as some of these examples you have shown. Obviously there should be no rusting parts for at least 5 yrs and Im just guessing here, the black on the trunking has been ground away on purpose to fit the thru bolts but not been repainted with flo-coat. I must admit I was concerned with the fit and finish of their interios but didnt think it would flow on to the inner workings.
Those 'repairs' look like they'll last ............... JUST until you are out of warranty! I would not accept repairs at all, I'd want the hull collected, bac to the manufacturer, and entire new mouldings bonded in properly, along with compensation for the loss of your sailing time. IF in the alternative, FULL REFUND plus costs.
I am so sorry to hear about your experience. I really hope that you can return the boat and get your money back. And it is very refreshing to see a TH-camr that doesn’t sugar coat or talk down the problems he experiences with his boat; as many others do! All the best and yes, please post follow up videos. Kind regards, Cornelia
Refund refund refund is the only solution here, major failures with these boats and crap support and repairs that I'd struggle to trust I wish you all the best with whatever the resolution path occurs. Thanks for sharing your story
What a nightmare , and far from over . Walk away if you can afford it .
Please carry on with all follow ups. I am seeing with many of the new style sailboats from most company's that their building quality is in question. Not just the Rapido company, but I see that HH company is also producing low quality produces. I'm think the worlds view on hiring DEI employees. Lots of money to build a ship. But get lots of bull crap.
La Junk. Nuff said.
are you making changes in the skeg to protect the propeler..... looks like you have done some work there... would be great to see what else have you work on...
thanks for sharing, It would be great if you post more details later. You will receive support and good that Rapido went to get this done. I did not see how the rope system to release the rudder will work, could you post some explaining on that...
The rope has three features. One, connects to the stainless tangs, to unlock the casing to rotate freely. the second rope set connects to the back of the bearing to pull the casing, to rotate it. And lastly, another line to lower it back down. I'll make a video when it's all setup. Thanks for your comment.
wohooo getting all fixed up thats awesome
Looks to my like you are the Guinea pig testing out Rapidos designs. Wonder what the dagger board case will look like in a few months? I wouldn’t be buying one (at this stage) as they seem to have so many design and engineering issues out of the box
It's really too bad after spending huge sums of money you have been put through what should have been the first part of the boaters sayin. "The two happiest days of a boaters life is when he buys his first boat and when he sells his last"... Hopefully this will be an end to your nightmare.
I hope you got your mast base checked while you were there
Have you checked the proper insulation of all your rudder parts to the carbon fiber? Remember, carbon fiber is an excellent conductor of electricity. Metal, especially bronze and stainless do not like that.
Yes, they are not insulated. I mentioned this to Rapido, but they didn't seem to think it was an issue. I'm looking into solutions, maybe adding an anode and tefgel.
SLV is a great example of no matter how well you sail or how much you spend on the boat, improper watch keeping can lead to a disaster.
I think they were sleeping at anchor.
@@PerformanceTrimaran Yes.. I only just heard that last night. I guess there is going to be a lot of conjecture until they do a 'proper' story on it.
@@ozskipperMost experienced sailors would not rush to judgement until they had the facts in front of them.
Seems like they have stepped up somewhat. It's the best possible outcome to rescue your financial liability and their reputation. Thank goodness for TH-cam in this instance. It adds a certain jeopardy to mediocrity. Good luck with future dealings with them. If I were lucky enough to afford one of these, it would be pre-owned. I have only owned one brand new boat, and many second hand ones. They have mostly been as you would expect with boats (expensive in time and/or money to maintain, but the new one was expensive so the pain when it's not right when delivered is greater....The first owner gets the boat prepared for the next lucky owner. However if Rapido is the only game in town wrt 50' tris then you don't have many other options
Bloody good mate pleased you see this. I was very disappointed for you
Glad you finally have Repedo doing what they should have done many months ago. Looks like good solid improvements to the initial faulty design. Good luck on the completion of all the repairs.
Rudder attached to a skeg is strong This is not strong You will run aground eventually No galvanized anything on a boat Design comes before build
I'm glad that they are sorting out your boat. The redesign looks way better
SV3 while sleeping was hit by a fishing boat returning to port at night
Yeah, really sorry to hear that. I hope it's repairable!
@PerformanceTrimaran no details of how extensive have been released. We're waiting to hear as well.
@@PerformanceTrimaranapparently not.
