Buying a Rapido 60 sailboat-- warranty repairs. Hardstand Progress?
2024 Rapido 60 Cruisers version sailing trimaran. Warranty repairs on a 60' Multihull sailboat, including rudder casing replacement.
patreon.com/PerformanceTrimaran
Rapido has come back to Thailand to install a new rudder casing. The repairs are now underway after some long delays, but progress is underway.
A little more background on the delays. After Rapido left from their first repair visit, I was not satisfied with the repairs, I wanted to be able to trust it would last. I spoke to the builder and made an offer to build a new rudder case, the one that was supposed to be included in the original build, but for some reason was not delivered. The offer I made was to be paid after all the repairs were completed, including other warranty items. This was an important part of my offer, as already so much time has been wasted waiting. This offer was made in July, they said it would take 30 days to complete. The offer to be paid was to deduct the hardstand storage after the 30 day period they said it would take to repair. This was also important to being sure things would be repaired timely and I would limit expenses that were beyond my control.
The repair workers came back in September to being installing a new rudder case, a new Hydraulic steering ram, and changes to the layout of the steering. They left before completion, while it was raining, I did not expect they would be gone for so long. I was then asked to pay for the full offer amount before they would return. I could not agree with this, what if the work was not done satisfactorily. They also were not deducting the storage as was in my good will offer, so my expenses were adding up.
I then asked them to repair and install the old rudder if they could not honor the original offer. There was also a shipping bill they said I would be obligated to pay, but would not present an invoice when asked for how much it was.
This is the "Cruisers Version" as they call it. The bulkheads are carbon, but areas of the hull are fiberglass, to my understanding. It was previously being prepared as a powered charter boat, but that sale did not complete. Since some renovations had to be made to it, it was then offered to me at a discount, and was to be ready in 3 months, back in 2021. The boat was not completed until 2024 (still costing 7 figures in the end) and I feel it was portrayed to me as it being a new boat, but conditions of the final project were not as expected.
They have now returned to complete the repairs. This video only highlights some of the work that is underway.
I'll share more of the story in future videos.
Thank you to Rapido for returning to complete the work!

Buying a Rapido 60 sailboat-- big mistake? Still stuck on the hardstand

2024 Rapido 60 Cruisers version sailing trimaran. Warranty delays on a new 60' Multihull sailboat, including rudder damage. Sailing from HCMC, Vietnam to Phuket, Thailand. Haul-out and repair work. The top speed on this boat during this first voyage was 27 knots. It sails really well, but it's been left in disrepair. When will Rapido finish the warranty work on this boat? patreon.com/Performanc...
Money back, and look for a save ship like outremer or mc 😂
thanks for sharing, It would be great if you post more details later. You will receive support and good that Rapido went to get this done. I did not see how the rope system to release the rudder will work, could you post some explaining on that...
The rope has three features. One, connects to the stainless tangs, to unlock the casing to rotate freely. the second rope set connects to the back of the bearing to pull the casing, to rotate it. And lastly, another line to lower it back down. I'll make a video when it's all setup. Thanks for your comment.
wohooo getting all fixed up thats awesome
Looks to my like you are the Guinea pig testing out Rapidos designs. Wonder what the dagger board case will look like in a few months? I wouldn’t be buying one (at this stage) as they seem to have so many design and engineering issues out of the box
It's really too bad after spending huge sums of money you have been put through what should have been the first part of the boaters sayin. "The two happiest days of a boaters life is when he buys his first boat and when he sells his last"... Hopefully this will be an end to your nightmare.
I hope you got your mast base checked while you were there
Have you checked the proper insulation of all your rudder parts to the carbon fiber? Remember, carbon fiber is an excellent conductor of electricity. Metal, especially bronze and stainless do not like that.
Yes, they are not insulated. I mentioned this to Rapido, but they didn't seem to think it was an issue. I'm looking into solutions, maybe adding an anode and tefgel.
SLV is a great example of no matter how well you sail or how much you spend on the boat, improper watch keeping can lead to a disaster.
I think they were sleeping at anchor.
@@PerformanceTrimaran Yes.. I only just heard that last night. I guess there is going to be a lot of conjecture until they do a 'proper' story on it.
Seems like they have stepped up somewhat. It's the best possible outcome to rescue your financial liability and their reputation. Thank goodness for TH-cam in this instance. It adds a certain jeopardy to mediocrity. Good luck with future dealings with them. If I were lucky enough to afford one of these, it would be pre-owned. I have only owned one brand new boat, and many second hand ones. They have mostly been as you would expect with boats (expensive in time and/or money to maintain, but the new one was expensive so the pain when it's not right when delivered is greater....The first owner gets the boat prepared for the next lucky owner. However if Rapido is the only game in town wrt 50' tris then you don't have many other options
Bloody good mate pleased you see this. I was very disappointed for you
Glad you finally have Repedo doing what they should have done many months ago. Looks like good solid improvements to the initial faulty design. Good luck on the completion of all the repairs.
Rudder attached to a skeg is strong This is not strong You will run aground eventually No galvanized anything on a boat Design comes before build
I'm glad that they are sorting out your boat. The redesign looks way better
SV3 while sleeping was hit by a fishing boat returning to port at night
Yeah, really sorry to hear that. I hope it's repairable!
@PerformanceTrimaran no details of how extensive have been released. We're waiting to hear as well.
@@PerformanceTrimaranapparently not.
Is the new rudder design the same as the design on LV?
Yes.
This is a rebuild
It appears that the work just started. To get to this point, a significant volume of effort was completed in the root cause analysis, evaluating options in the multiple areas that were redesigned and then structurally analyzed. The loads on fast-tri rudders are varied and immense. It's not super surprising that a learning curve has occurred. Often, materials and resins need to be ordered, shipped, and received. Maybe all of these were already in stock and only needed to be kitted. Im sorry there was such a huge delay and prossible miscommunications. I hope repairs are back on track and you are back on the water soon. Best wishes for following winds and seas!
Thanks the update, I would like to recommend to anybody's interrest the Dragonfly's brand new design DF36 trimaran! They work for many decades in Denmark with constantly high quality and enthusiasm for sailing. Use your mind, choose the best!
Forget it, it will not get better. Sorry for that.
The least they should do!
I hope you can sell this junk after the repairs are completed and get yourself a simple, cheap boat. Thanks for sharing!
You hope the rest of the boat is broadly sound - the pics so far indicate a lower quality product, but it's still an amazing concept that if all the issues are sorted will end up being a cracking boat. They seem to have either rushed R and D or not kept a tight reign on qc, but hopefully the beams and main structure are sound.
Have to love making customers unpaid beta testers.
Mate glad repairs are being done for you. I really do hope it all works out well as I am sure you paid considerable money for your boat. BUT this is not the first of a new design and I must say it looks very slip shod in the engineering and coming up with new designs at this late stage is not encouraging. Don’t get me wrong I really want the best outcome for you. I feel SLV has a lot to answer for. Australian supporter thanks.
Thank you so much for taking the time to produce these videos. Your fair account of the issues and the detailed description of the yard's response and overall attitude to customer handling is very useful for us aspiring boat owners. Its a great practical lesson and we will follow the development closely. Please keep documenting this fascinating story!
Thank you for your support and excellent comment!
Looks like many quality issues
happy its working for you. funny how they jump to it after some TH-cam exposure, anyway its happening and much better design. who the hell was the original naval architect?
It's designed by Morrelli and Melvin.
Didn't La Vaga have some of the same issues you guys are having?
I believe they may have had some other issues.
@@PerformanceTrimaran I think their rudder delaminated. They also had problems with the mast box. I think these boats need to sacrifice some weight for strength.
The new boats built these days are a bit shit
Can’t trust a brand that takes so long to repair manufacturing issues.
Good on you, Torpedo. 😊😊😊😊
Ahahaha, thanks for the laugh. Not sure if that was an intentional typo.
Interesting to see they have not only come to the party, but have rethought, and rebuilt the whole set up. Will look forward to your review of it down the track. Does this work address all your issues, including extension of warranty? Good luck.
Still in discussions...
@@PerformanceTrimaran You may consider sending them a link to the HH people responding to the problems the Wynns are having with their new boat, and comments re the warranties.
That is such a better looking system (from my distracted phone view). Nice to see the vacuum bagged carbon. I am so pleased to see they were working up a solution all that time, although I guess there was little communication. Best wishes with it.
Cannot really opin about the new rudder casing as we never got decent images of the old one. However, good to see Rapido addressing the issues in a quick and timely fashion..
Theres one person i know who is an expert in carbon fiber fabrication and modified an ARC Code Basque racer... Into a cruising Trimeran .. Hes Dutch his names Arrie his partner is /was a English lady they have a large German Shepherd dog and are based in Portugal in a river estuary.. he had two boats Trimeran Dawn and Trimeran Twighlight. th-cam.com/video/TSRHJZtBn2Y/w-d-xo.htmlsi=AhUBfkSAhzVUcyZe Hes probably the best man to ask ..also look how he did that that on Dawn.
Thanks, I'll check them out. :)
I’m sure you’re hoping for the best but Rapido has demonstrated a lack of proper engineering for the massive loads that are placed on various parts of your vessel as well as poor workmanship and less than stellar components. The sad thing is, you’ll never be able to have confidence in your craft. I suggest you come to an agreement that has the company buy your boat back and you move on. They won’t survive all the bad publicity and your warranty repairs are basically an experiment for future production. I doubt you signed up to be a Guinea Pig and the vast ocean isn’t the proper venue for that creature anyway. Cheers.
The design looks a bit "engineered" the old seawind24 catamaran has a great system for its kick up rudders works everytime easily reset underway
Looks like a lot of Band-aids, especially for a new boat. You seem fine with it, good for you. Better you than me ;-) Good luck chief!
Seems solid to me. Make sure they extend the warranty period 🎉
Huge compromise for safety in such a vessel on the sea, for what purpose? The elements will always win against man's flimsy attempt to concor.
My concern is that this to be engineering “on the hoof”. Has a properly qualified engineer or boat builder looked at the proposed solutions. They all look very homemade to me and (from the photos) I would not trust the repairs to go very far off shore
What happened to La Vagabonde?
It's posted in their comments section of their YT page. I believe it was hit by a fishing boat.
'Should last for years' means you'll be buying a new one from us before too long, as will future owners. The rope design on the rudder case looks poor too, its inevitable that will wear through regularly.
I do trust the Hydrive parts, they have been around for many years and used on a lot of commercial vesslels.
@@PerformanceTrimaran ok I'm glad its you who will be relying on them not us after all.
Great news that they finally got this taken care of.
Great news, scary that they hadn't _R&D'd_ all that before though. Glad it's getting resolved.
Vagabond had trouble as well with their boat that needed fixing
Looks to me the only reason repedo turned up to the party was because you’ve got 104,000 subscribers in two weeks and sailing La vagabond got on board. It’s sad that it took all that for them to come . I would never buy of those boats after the dramas you initially went through.
Nice update Brett. Great to see some solid progress.
Hooray glad they are giving you the attention you deserve and starting the repair process.
Thanks for update, if is my boat i will check everything very deeply, good luck
What happened to SV La Vagabond? Nothing on their YT channel about an accident yet.
It's posted in their comments section of their YT page. I believe it was hit by a fishing boat.
How much does a boat like this cost ?? hope you get to do more sailing soon . Sucks to be stuck on land in a brand spanking new boat, but good to see you are being taken care of
