The day the last of the Legends we all watched as children dies will be the last of good old country music as we know it. as painful as that is, the next generation will craft their own legends.
Willie, Waylon, Chris and Jonny will go down in history along with a few others. for their hard work and dedication to country music, Just as Elvis did with rock and role, and Ray did with Jazz. there will always be legends whos sound will live for ever.
But each generation will craft their own new styles and follow their own choices.
personally I would love to head up a tribute / cover group. I can sing like the HW-men, but Unfortunately I''m no guitar player. maybe I can just get a backing group ?
I often say cover groups are never a scratch on the originals, especially legends like these guys. But soon its all we will have, Tribute acts and old MP3 copies,
or we could get up to date and listen to modern music, I dont know any. I stopped listening to new stuff when the Spice girls started.
"If you wanna be my" OFF SWITCH !!!!
Part of the problem with the new generation of country singers is its hard to pitcher them facing the same stuff as the old ones. the wild west has tamed allot. if you take the boy named sue song, That would have been delt with in court and daddy would have been paying child care. the empty open planes are now crushed by tourists. listen to the voice over in the last cowboy song. hard to feel that much feeling and depth from some young lad or lass after they tweet about the weather and put a pitcher of their cat on facebook.
their long travels of a few days by horseback are now about 3 hours in the comfort of a new car with air con.
I don't mean to put these new guys down in any way. Just point out that they lead very different lives to their fathers and grandfathers. to point out that the hardships that Willie and co saw growing up will be very different to what our next gen kids are seeing.
one last mention to Dan, I mean Elwood Blues. on one of the "Everybody" recordings he says that soon we will only be able to find good music in the CD collections of old libraries and we should just enjoy it while we still can.
one day all these songs may fade into the darkness of the past. but while I still breath, I will still be playing them.

There was this old man who I used to help on his ranch. He was a teacher for 36 years and did labor in the summers. He was even an actor. I started working with him after my brother committed suicide. I would go over every day and help him with whatever he needed. If he to go somewhere, he took me with him. We went through many of the southern states buying and selling horses and cows. Our lives were like some old western movie. Over the years we became best friends. He was always there to listen and give advice for all my problems. I looked up to him. He passed away in July of this year of leukemia. I got to see him for the last time the day before he died. He was 73. Everytime I hear this song I think of my best friend.

This is always how I felt with my Daddy. He used to take me to this bar because they had the best chili in town and he would say with a wink, "Don't tell your Mama". I am so glad I had him in my life. Even taught me how to play forty two.

Story time, sorry for the long text but I want to get this off my chest somewhere so here. I never really got to know my granddad. From all that I've heard and the little I did get to meet him, he was a wonderful man but between the fact that he suffered from Alzheimer's, the fact that him and my grandmother were divorced (I've been lucky enough for her to visit with some consistency throughout my life so far), and the fact he lived on a different continent from me, it made getting to know him hard. I still regret not making more steps to get to know him but unfortunately a few years ago he passed away. Although I never grew up knowing my true granddad, I never felt like I was missing one. My dad had a friend who moved to the USA around the same time and by the time I was born, this man was a uncle of mine. He lived about 45 minutes from my house and we would visit him 5-6 times a year, and he would do the same to us. Going into the end of my 6th grade year, I found out that he was suffering from skin cancer and as the school year got closer to finishing, it got worse and worse. Finally, about 3 days before the end of the year, we found out that he had passed away in his sleep. About a year and a half later, my grandfather passed away as well. For the rest of my time in middle school, I felt like I had lost something that could never be brought back. During this time I continued through band and at band camp my freshman year of high school, I had a dream. Normally, I am not one who places much stock in dreams, but the night that I had was the night after what I can confidently say was my worst night of band. I was ready to quit and just go home and pretend like nothing had ever happened. That night though, I had a dream of my uncle and my grandfather and although I cannot remember much from that dream, I woke up knowing that I could not quit. Two nights later, we had a parent performance to show what we had learned and I was terrified I was going to screw something up. Just before preforming, I saw a star in the sky, sitting a little to the right of where I found out later my parents were sitting. At the time I didn't think much of it, but at every competition we had outside that year, there was a star in the same spot. Now, most of me knows that that's just because of how stars work but there is a small part of me that feels that it is my uncle and my granddad, watching down on me. Even at the indoor competitions, there would always be an empty seat or row behind my parents that I would use the same way, that the seats weren't quite empty, just not filled with living folk. Even though they have passed, years ago now, the marks that they have left on me will never quite go away and they will always have a special place in my heart and have inspired me to be the man that I know they saw in me. Again, sorry for the long text, but I needed to get this all out. If you have someone that you are close to, tell them how much they mean and how much you truly care about them because you never know when you won't get that chance again. All love, WeeG

Little extra thing I thought of just now. Earlier this year my father turned 60, the age my uncle was when he passed. At my dads birthday, me, my brother, my dad and some of his friends were sitting around on our porch, just shooting the shit. At some point, one of them made a joke about how old my dad was getting and after a short laugh, my dad says "I just think that I'm the same age as Jim". I can't say I've heard more grown men get completely silent in such a short time. A few seconds later, there's a toast to my uncle and they all start telling stories and laughing about what my uncle would be saying if he was still here. I didn't look to closely, but if I had to bet, I don't think there was a dry eye at the table, myself included. Memories will last far longer then our bodies ever will
