Nelson complements Cash so well here. He starts off lighter and more upbeat, which really adds to the suspense and contrast. Cash then comes in “their brands were still on fire...”. Nails that first line so powerful.
At the beginning yes, but when it goes back to Nelson, I just felt him lacking. And when they both sing "Ghost riders in the sky" Nelson's voice is just lost. I like Nelson, but his voice just seems weaker when so sharply contrasted with Cash's
It's the "band of my life" ...from music to be stoned to..to music to be lamented by when.i die. All who sing pay tribute to timeless classics and greatness ❤

Agree. My disillusionment with “modern” country music started around 20 years ago. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had the same experience with rock music. Most music today has been melted down and poured into the same boring mold, very much with an unenlightened formula. That’s just my opinion. I am old, yes, but I got to see many of the great bands.
@@davidross1576 RickBeato has put up a video about why boomers (and GenXers like me) can not relate to millenials' music. His theory is that after the mid90ies digital sound processing eliminated improvisation and the human element as well as the occasional void spaces in rhythm and track spaces. I like this theory very much it keeps me from admitting that I'm getting old ;) That said there is plenty of human made music out there, just not in western music industry any more.

Ran across this great performance by chance and am so glad I did. Once upon a time, my father and Reggie Young served a couple years in the army together, stationed in Africa, where they became good friends. Dad followed Reggie’s career throughout his life and was very proud of the achievements attained by this supremely talented and humble man. They have both left this earth but I like to envision them meeting up in a better place, sharing a laugh or two and reminiscing about the times they spent together.
I sometimes forget how incredibly well both Willy Nelson and Johnny Cash can sing. Especially Johnny. He had a resonance and haunting quality to his voice that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. It's sad that they both had such troubled lives, (Willy is still with us of course) but perhaps that contributed to how well they sing.
This song got me through cold freezing mornings when I lived in Montana, driving to work at my first big hospital job as a respiratory therapist. This is like a breath of fresh air, and such amazing voices ❤
I was just about to comment about Reggie. What a fantastic session guitarist! He knows when to shut up and when to play. He's like a living sidechain compressor: As soon as someone is singing, he stops playing, and not in an awkward way. He anticipates when the singers come in and adjusts his phrasing accordingly. And the way he's changing his tone. Just masterful. And I love how he looks like a damn truck driver who somehow just happened to be brought up on stage.
Wow - one of my favorite old country songs, sung by the best classic country performers. This version is absolutely haunting, and gave me the chills - and doesn't get much better than that !!! :)

This just killed me. Tears flowing down my face. My late dad died five years ago and while I was listening a thought struck me: "My dad would have loved this. I would have loved to just send it to him."
I can't and will never be able to. Damn, he absolutely passed way too early.
Sven Döring damn man. I hope you’re doing good. Stay strong.
I absolutely understand mate. I lost my mum in 2011 and I still think about her many times every day, I still talk to her all the time. The loss of a parent is something you never really get over. I hope you find the strength to keep going, your dad would have wanted you to. 🙏🏻

Nick Cave is slightly close
Highwaymen are a national treasure. There will never be another outlaw country band like them again. Also, the Corries did a comedy song to this tune that's pretty hilarious if you're at all familiar with Scottish culture.
Still great in 2024 - RIP Kris

Theyre only waiting on Willie..then the ghostriders will reign again.

This is so good. I must have listened to this 1000 times. Never gets old.
An absolute magical classic that transcends all music genres, ethnic groups , langauages, and ages.
Because it is simply great. Nothing less.

When I first listened to this song I was on a very dark moment of my life. I was going through depression and anxiety and I remember how well this song made be few. I'm glad I came across it again, 2 years after that low point my life, to say I'm doing extremely well now. Thanks The Highwaymen for such a perfect version of this legendary moment.

There's a reason this crowd was quiet throught this song. What a moment 👏🏼 🙌🏽
Respect shall be given where it's due
Nelson complements Cash so well here. He starts off lighter and more upbeat, which really adds to the suspense and contrast. Cash then comes in “their brands were still on fire...”. Nails that first line so powerful.
At the beginning yes, but when it goes back to Nelson, I just felt him lacking. And when they both sing "Ghost riders in the sky" Nelson's voice is just lost. I like Nelson, but his voice just seems weaker when so sharply contrasted with Cash's
Willy Nelson & Johnny Cash... that song, those lyrics, those voices and above that gitarplay....heaven !
@Willie Nelson 🔵 forever a Legend Listen to this song atleast once a day while I smoke one at night just makes everything much better
Heroes of not only music but also human history!
It's the "band of my life" ...from music to be stoned to..to music to be lamented by when.i die. All who sing pay tribute to timeless classics and greatness ❤
Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson - Imagine the feeling of being one of these 4 guys and having the other three being your bandmates. Yeah... neither can I - some things just aren't for mere mortals to experience.

An old cowboy went riding out
One dark and windy day
Upon a ridge he rested
As he went along his way
When all at once a mighty herd
Of red eyed cows he saw
Plowin' through the ragged skies
And up the cloudy draw
Their brands were still on fire
And their hooves were made of steel
Their horns were black and shiny
And their hot breath he could feel
A bolt of fear went through him
As they thundered through the sky
For he saw the riders coming hard
And he heard their mournful cry
Yippie-yi-o
Yippie-yi-yay
Ghost riders in the sky
Their faces gaunt
Their eyes were blurred
Their shirts all soaked with sweat
He's riding hard to catch that herd
But he ain't caught 'em yet
'Cause they've got to ride forever
On that range up in the sky
On horses snorting fire
As they ride on, hear their cry
As the riders loped on by him
He heard one call his name
'If you wanna save your soul
From hell a-riding on our range
Then, cowboy, change your ways today
Or with us you will ride
Trying to catch the devil's herd
Across these endless skies
Yippie-yi-o
Yippie-yi-yay
Ghost riders in the sky

I thank the Lord for sending me The Highwaymen. What pleasure they have given me. Still singing along at 86
I can say that in 2021 'Country & Western' music has died, it will never be the same .. none of the new country singers can sing like this
Agree. My disillusionment with “modern” country music started around 20 years ago. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had the same experience with rock music. Most music today has been melted down and poured into the same boring mold, very much with an unenlightened formula. That’s just my opinion. I am old, yes, but I got to see many of the great bands.
country music was replaced with stadium country, bunch of synthetic overproduced crap about trucks
110% agreed
Erm What about Marty Stuart!!!

Hopefully you will get to meet him once when you leave earth in years to come
What a PRIVILEGE to see these great artists perform 💜 thank you technology
I sometimes forget how incredibly well both Willy Nelson and Johnny Cash can sing. Especially Johnny. He had a resonance and haunting quality to his voice that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. It's sad that they both had such troubled lives, (Willy is still with us of course) but perhaps that contributed to how well they sing.
Johnny's voice was SPECIAL!
Alle 4 Stimmen sind herausragend!!! Die gibt es so heute nicht mehr 😔
The amount of talent up there on that stage is phenomenal!!!! TRUE C/W music... as it should be!!!
From time to time, i just need to hear it again......beautiful song! ❤🌹😊
Johnny Cash has such a powerful voice, I love when he sings his parts.
I could listen and enjoy a solo from Reggie Young for a whole week !!!!! absolutely amazing Reggie !!!
This song got me through cold freezing mornings when I lived in Montana, driving to work at my first big hospital job as a respiratory therapist. This is like a breath of fresh air, and such amazing voices ❤
1:22 Shoutout to the guitar player that had Johnny and Waylon staring at him point blank through that solo.
Ice in his veins!
No problem for Reggie Young i think
Reggie Young has played on recordings with all these guys already.....and then some.
I think he looked and played very cool !
He been playing for them for so many years. He knows his job and does it well.
