Top 10 Alexi Laiho Riffs

  • Hope you like it.
    As you might or might not know, Alexi is one of my prior influences when it comes to music. I learned so much stuff over the years by playing, practicing and analysing his music. This is a loss for music.
    My condolences go to his family and friends.
    This is in no particular order and resembles my own opinion.
    Ask me in a few weeks and my mind would probably have changed about the riffs. There are just too many good riffs. Maybe I do another one because I'm bad at making decisions.
    Thank you for everything, Alexi.

    I had luck and met Alexi briefly before their gig in Nosturi, Helsinki. Aww, he was so sweet and very polite, even though he was busy he shared like 10 minutes of his time with chatting with me. He wasn't just a great guitar player and song writer but also such a nice and humble guy with a great sense of humor. I will remember that meeting with him for the rest of my life. You left us way too early...😢 Rest in peace, Alexi 💜 Thank you for these unforgettable riffs, very well played. Hasta luego! 👋

      @@Dignityofficial_ it's definitely better than Halo of Blood and IWC. And Not my Funeral is one of the best if not the best song.
      I really didn't like the sound on Halo. It sounded so boring and the vocals sounded kind of edited.
      IWC sounded better but still had vocals that sounded low pitched.
      I'm very happy that Hexed returned to a very good sound with clear and raw sounding vocals like on the albums before Halo.
      If I had to rank the albums it would probably look like that:
      1. HCDR
      2. Hexed
      3. FTR
      4. Blooddrunk
      5. AYDY
      6. Hatebreeder

  • @tanshaomala
    @tanshaomala 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Interesting that you chose many of the newer riffs. I can definitely hear a shift in Alexi's riff writing style over the years, there's this thing he loved to do with riffs that I can't explain, its on paint the sky with blood too. I heard that and I was like "Damn that's such an Alexi riff" haha.

    • @Dignityofficial_
      @Dignityofficial_  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I didn't even notice this at the time. I was like going through songs and that's what I came up with. I mean those were songs that shaped my playing a lot when I was young.
      I know some people didn't like the picks, cuz I "forgot" to take older ones, but somehow those are more "Alexi riffs" for me. Don't get me wrong, i love all the albums and listen to each and every one of them with pleasure. In terms of riff? I dunno. I'm more into "newer" cob riffs. Leads? Solos? Damn, those from the old albums are killer in that case.
      It's just generally hard to choose.

    Never seen this many AYDY riffs on a bodom riffs compilation. We definitely have very similar tastes when it comes to riff ranking. I love the old albums but I always felt that the riff work was better in later albums. Maybe simply because I like heavier and groovier stuff. To each their own.

    • @Dignityofficial_
      @Dignityofficial_  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with you, the later albums have more heavier and many time more complex riffs. I love RRF by the way because of that.
      But these were like songs I played over and over in my teens. And everytime I come back to them I get that feel of nostalgia what it felt like to practice this stuff.
      I played a lot songs from the first albums, and they are hard but not that catchy, at least for me.
      All of these riffs here have their technical difficulties and I love that.
      Maybe I picked to many of that era..I don't know. If I would do another one right now, I probably would change a lot of that. But in that moment it felt right. But hey, it's personal taste, and I get that, if people disagree and that is totally fine.

    I never liked COB after follow the reaper. Their style changed, Detuned, lower, heavier but not as technical and the classical influence seemed to vanish which is what I liked most about them abs the 80’s riffs mixed with a new heavy flare

    • @Dignityofficial_
      @Dignityofficial_  4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Yes, I totally get that!
      Their style definitely changed after that. They got more technical in a way, that things were harder to play, even though it wasn't that fast or technical sounding anymore.
      This is what I love about change in music, its totally normal that sound and style can change as the band progress. And not everyone will like it. But always see it like this, that if they didn't change, people would say "man they always sound the same, it's getting boring". On the other hand if they change, people likey say "the new stuff sucks, I liked the old style and sound more"
      You will always have that conflict in music. You can't satisfy everyone.
      And that's totally fine.

      I hear this "they got less technical" argument a lot, but the later stuff is more technical than hatebreeder and reaper lol. Especially the solo's on the earlier albums feature very cookie cutter shred patterns.

    Blasphemy, no riffs from the first three albums, and those have the absolute golden COB riffs...

    • @Dignityofficial_
      @Dignityofficial_  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I probably missed out some of those.
      But to be fair, riff wise I think the later albums were more complex regarding that. Melody wise the first 3 albums have killer leads.
      But I admit that I probably should've included riffs from the first 3 albums cause they really got killer ones too.

    • @EvilDragon666
      @EvilDragon666 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Dignityofficial_ If I'm going to be completely honest, there really was something magical and unique about the first 3 albums. HCDR was a turning point that still contains some killer stuff, but it started getting washed out after that, and to me it started to sound not like COB anymore. I'm sure you've heard that story from many others...
      On the other hand, it's really hard to keep the quality level up at all times, while also trying to reinvent yourself (because it's fucking boring doing the same exact album over and over just because people like it!)
      Here's what I would highlight as simply brilliant riffs from the first three:
      Lake Bodom - the main syncopated riff that starts after the intro lead. Slays every fucking time!
      Children Of Bodom - I mean of course the self-titled song is gonna kick ass. The main riff is beautiful, and also tons of fun to play!
      Downfall - Yep, repetitive, but also kinda tricky to play in tempo. Still, fun!
      Bodom After Midnight - the bridge part between first two verses is just stellar.
      Hate Me - also killer stuff in this one
      Kissing The Shadows (like just pick anything from the song it's gold)
      Mask Of Sanity (verse riff is killer)

    • @Dignityofficial_
      @Dignityofficial_  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EvilDragon666 I totally agree that the style changed after ftr.
      And yes there are killer songs in the early stages. I mean I listen to every album, I love all the songs, all the differences, all the similarities. And it's hard (for me) to list them because I can listen to all of them and find nice stuff in every song.
      But I don't mind any other opinion about that. Personal taste varies and I get that if people say the first album were the best, and I get that people say they don't like it at all.
      I will probably do another one of these, just because I know that I missed out so many stuff. It's fun to play all this stuff and it's good practise.
      Kissing the shadows by the way is what brought me to cob. I loved and still love that song.
      Thank you for your honesty!

      Well you know, this was a very spontaneous video and these were riffs i wanted to play throughout my youth and I got stuck with them.
      Maybe it's not a list the majority of people would agree with and that's totally fine. I missed out on so many riffs, i know. But in the end and after a year in retrospect it's fine.
      That's just a personal list of riffs i learned over the years to strive at being a better guitarist and having even fun.
      And to be fair, i didn't make that video with any intention of it getting more views than a hundred. So it was more like a personal list and documentation for myself.
      I can see why probably many people disagree with that list, but still, it's just a subjective list from a nobody on the internet that dwells in memories what stuck with me for a period of time shaping me as a guitarist. Nothing more. Nothing less.
      I hope you still had some kind of joy from that video, of not, it's totally fine. Hope you have a lovely day 💜

      Nah, I don't mean "best songs" by that. That list of mine would be very very different from that list.
      More like my personal view of best single riffs that stuck in my head and were satisfying to play and listen to.
      In no regards to the top best bodom songs.
      I mean we could fight all day long about personal taste when it comes to that, but if I'm honest and we both sit down one evening listening to different songs, analysing the songs and argue about what is best, my mind would probably change every single time, cause every now and then there would be a riff where I am like: damn. That's top ten.
      Probably in every goddamn song at least one time haha.
      But I keep that in mind what you're trying to tell me ;)
