Never get tired of Alexi pentatonic based licks. Sometimes they sounds kinda 80's, sometimes folkish, but at the same time Alexi perfectly mixed them with some cool outside notes, played unorthodox patterns using them and came up with some tasty modulations. His playing really had the style and mojo.
Dave, you picked Sioux City Sarsaparilla!!!! What a perfect way to honor the late great Alexi. I still have Guitar Heroes in my cd collection, I got it when it was released, I was a young high schooler and I had just started to learn guitar and this album just blew my mind! I highly recommend you check out the other guitarists stuff there too, like Roope Latvala (he used to play in CoB as well), Euge Valovirta, Tuomio Louhio, Mikko Salovaara and many more. But Yeah, this was such an awesome tribute from you to Alexi, the world will never be the same without him.
I live in Finland and have a friend who kinda knew Alexi. He told that Alexi told that he was drinking in LA say 20 yrs ago and Zakk Wylde was there too. Alexi didnt have guts to walk up to him but Zakk came to him and thanked Alexi for keeping Randy Rhoads flame alive. Also he told when in Guitar Worlds cover shoot with Steve Vai and Zakk Wylde he thought of being out of his league.
You are such a great teacher. I love the way you break things down and you always have little stories to go along with the lessons. Great stuff David!! Thanks for sharing!!
Only one artist inspired me more than Steve Vai growing up: Alexi Laiho. He was a true blue guitar hero. He had it all. He had the riffs, the licks, the hair, the vocalist/ guitar player image, and a unique style that no one else had at the time.
Shoutouts to "Leiho". If people are into where Laiho came from, there's still Roope Latvala from Stone out in the wild. He was a huge fan of Stone as far as I know, he bought the old Stone guitarist's Jackson (it might've been refinished or Laiho got a new one) and the same amps and stuff. I suppose international people aren't too knowledgeable about Stone, but they kicked the metal scene on the roll in Finland in the early 90's, Laiho soon followed with his own band a couple of years after Stone disbanding. Obviously Stone wasn't his only influence, like in a lot of interviews he's stated the ones you mentioned, Vai, Wylde, Dimebag etc. Some of his licks, especially tapping licks, have so much Dime in them (like double tapped pentatonic descending licks), same for whammy harmonics. I suppose the sweep licks are from Vai archives? Definitely a lot of Stone influences anyway. But this signature thing of Laiho, an ascending sweep that ends in a tapped bend, no idea if there's some Van Halen in the mix. He did like the 80's rock a lot though, their Billy Idol cover is great. Funnily enough I always thought their top songs were the 80's covers. There's also a rehearsal place bootleg vid where they practice the Rebel Yell cover and there you can truly see how percussive and exciting his sound and playing style is, when he improvises the solo. It's like that Van Halen thing, like a jackhammer punching the frets. The Lee Jackson GP-1000 preamp was pretty disliked, Zakk Wylde refused to use it despite a rack designed for him, but Stone used them before Metaltronix heads and Laiho used one on most of the classic Bodom records and Latvala still plays it. Laiho single handedly made that old Lee Jackson rack preamp go from $150 (or almost handed out free) to $600. It also shows that he used to play violin and classical music as a kid. There's this Young Guitar shootout with him and Latvala in their Sinergy times I believe, jamming out Vivaldi's Four Seasons and this other song, I think it was a Waltari song (another finnish band that Latvala played guitar for some period of time after Stone, very very experimental and weird). Those demonstrations explain a lot of their influences as kids, both play classical like it was their second nature, on electric guitar. But if you like Laiho, definitely check out Stone and Latvala. Those guys kicked some serious ass and did some pretty unique speed metal that went quite prog towards the end. At least personally I have never heard similar guitar playing than in Stone. It's definitely american thrash influenced, but has this weird Finnish twist. Like this previously unreleased track "Words" has such a weird outro solo. But could be straight from Laiho's trick book. I think the most iconic Laiho stuff has been the title song for the band, Children of Bodom, and of course Lake Bodom, their first hit song. His whammy flutters and whammy harmonic bends are also that signature style. The Young Guitar demonstration 2 (the Waltari piece) has quite a bunch of his signature style licks. Definitely good material. Too bad he went so hard down the alcohol line already as underaged kid, the guy lived seriously rough life. I don't know if the news spread internationally but there were already cases when he was taken to a hospital by ambulance for his body just giving up. He burned the candle from both ends, but that definitely created a lot of memorable music and left an impact. They were so much out in the world, touring always outside Finland and they were kinda old story in Finland already, that I wasn't quite aware of how many legendary guitarists had his name in the books, only the tributes paid by all the artists made me realize how impactful he truly was (aside from selling so many records everywhere in the world, they were loved in Japan pretty much from the very beginning).
Thanks for making this, it's means a lot. Alexi was a hero of mine. Not only did he introduce me to extreme metal but he also got me into virtuoso guitar players like Vinnie Moore and Yngwie etc. He made me want to play the guitar. To anyone reading this, check out Sinergy it's another band Alexi had. It's has some sick guitar playing in it.
Damn man. I hate to hear he died. Love CoB. They were absolute greatness. I totally agree with you, I heard Randy in his playing all over the place. Awesome lesson. Perfect tribute to a great artist.
I'd heard of 'Children of Bodom', but never realized they were such a force. Thanks for the introduction! It's sad that it comes on the heels of his death.
Hey Late Night Lessons! I never listened to Alexi until after death. Alexi was an insane monster shredder! This video lesson is a great tribute to Alexi. Thanx
RIP Alexi. Alexi was monstrous live, he was friends with many of the unsung Scandinavian shredders, also had a huge Black Metal influence. You can hear Tony MacAlpine, and Joey Taffola
I am so happy I subscribed to you. You are awesome and seem like such a genuine human being. You go from Al Di Meola to Alexi!!! You have range and I really appreciate your taste. Thank you for keeping a guitar player inspired
I was just the same as you David back in the time these young guns hit I was so happy to hear some good metal guitar. COB had two great guitar players . it's crazy when a cool scene comes around the first wave of musicians are the real deal. prs sounds good bro
Thank you so much David Brewster. I wish to see you playing on G3 very soon brother.. I am very grateful for you. Thank you for your lessons. You deserve more fame. I wish all the happiness. \m/
Alexi's passing?!? wow...he was YOUNG...that sucks...Alexi is perhaps on of THE most under-rated and under-appreciated guitarists of all times...Alexi should have been FAR more famous, imo. One piece that totally blows me away, is alexi and his bandmate playing vivaldi 4 seasons...SO impressive...LOVE IT!
I saw Bodom twice. They played on Gigantour in 2008 w/ Megadeth, Job for a Cowboy, In Flames, and Hire on Fire. And, before that, I saw them in 2006 in Detroit with Amon Amarth, Gojira, and Sanctity. They were amazing live, and Alexi had some incredible technique.
How are you not in a band creating albums and touring? You have the talent and skills to be the next up and coming rock star. You can fill that void we are all missing from past legends, artists that have retired or past on. Don’t be afraid of success and fame. Awesome lesson!!!
I remember being introduced to Alexi in 2005. Children of Bodom was so good! Alexi was on the cover of every other Guitar World magazine it seemed like.
,,,,hey.!.......happy 2021.......... Sad news,,,,,,,tnx, for this lesson,,,,,your playing is what we ALL strive for..😯....glad to know who you are,,,,I will be paying close attention this winter to sharpen my skills....pat.(the dude who saw Rohdes,in 1981).!
Surprisingly, one his other big influences was Mark Knopfler. Even though their playing couldn’t be more different on the surface, you can definitely hear some MK influence. Knopfler is one of my favorites too and I was able to discover Alexi through him.
Alexi was indeed a huge Roads fan. He was asked once in an interview: "If there's something you still wish to achieve, what would it be?" And he said he wants to play one show with Ozzy Osbourne
Yeah we sure have lost another great back in 2018 I lost one of my favorite players Oli Herbert from the band All That Remains and was wondering if in the near future you could possibly include some of Oli's work in a lesson. Thanks brother.🤘
Haven’t heard or seen much from Alexi in a while leads to me to believe he was in bad health ... saw a video with him and Zack trading licks and Alexi looks as if he was bored ... great player ...
Make Another Alexi Laiho children of Bodom licks that are randy rhoads influenced licks lessons. I like Alexi Laiho guitar licks because they are very influenced randy rhoads sounding a lot to learn from him. I can't believe he died was shocked to hear today about it early before this video its just hard to believe. To bad he didn't make more guitar lessons knowing he had multiple health issues for years which I didn't know about.
I saw them in 09 too, in Seattle on the Lamb of God tour. Someone in the audience puked all over the main floor and they had to stop their set so the staff could come clean it up. 🤘
Had been a long time fan since 2005... My youtube name originally was 6cob6hc6 haha Great lesson and he will be missed. Thankfully Alexi has a lot of content out there so we can always remember.
I saw that same line up at the house of blues in Myrtle Beach . 2009 was such a sick year for metal. My friend got Chris Adler's drumsticks. Would love to see you do a Mark Morton three for all. That'd be sick
Congrats on the new axe! The Christmas before last, i saw that a guitar I had been looking at went on sale. The PRS S2 Standard Singlecut Satin dropped down to $801 for one day. I jumped on it! Same color as your Vela, love the wood grain through the thin nitrocellulose coating. I hope you get years of enjoyment from your new American made Paul Reed Smith!
All my friends in the band I was in during the late 00s were huge Alexi fans. I remember driving around with them aimlessly listening to the Are You Dead Yet album.
Back around 86 I heard malmsteen for the first time at 15 🤯 about 6 months after I started learning guitar, I took the rising force tape to my bluegrass guitar teacher & said I wanna learn this, He said yea kid you and me both😂
and there is also video of him playing the full song Sioux City Sarsaparilla with some different parts here and there I would defiantly check the video out th-cam.com/video/5UsS-wU48kw/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=BayAreaBackstage go to 5:21 min mark on video
Can someone please explain to me what the hell is going on at 32 seconds here: th-cam.com/video/RFPMG6y-uZY/w-d-xo.html I've been playing for several years. I know how to sweep pick. People come here to learn about guitar and music. Not to be inundated with your political views. Do you want a bunch of lefties bringing politics here too?
Respect Alexi’s music attitude “fuck the trending, I just wanna play guitar”, also dude never feel ashamed about loving glam metal.
Never get tired of Alexi pentatonic based licks. Sometimes they sounds kinda 80's, sometimes folkish, but at the same time Alexi perfectly mixed them with some cool outside notes, played unorthodox patterns using them and came up with some tasty modulations. Thanks for this lesson, man. Very helpful to find joy in playing these licks after the sad news.
I live in Finland and have a friend who kinda knew Alexi. He told that Alexi told that he was drinking in LA say 20 yrs ago and Zakk Wylde was there too. Nice tribute, Dave. Alexi was a giant of what we love. Thanks.
Alexi was a badass player. May he R.I.P. Thanks for this lesson, Dave.
Damn man. I hate to hear he died. Love CoB. They were absolute greatness. I totally agree with you, I heard Randy in his playing all over the place. Awesome lesson. Perfect tribute to a great artist.
Yep, he was the next extension of Randy Rhoads in my mind.
He's the modern day randy rhoads.
I'd heard of 'Children of Bodom', but never realized they were such a force. Thanks for the introduction! It's sad that it comes on the heels of his death.
Great lesson video , Bro !! As usual !! RIP ALEXI !!!
"..here's the lick in question, and it's terrifying..." - that sums up Alexi so much!
Hey Late Night Lessons! I never listened to Alexi until after death. Alexi was an insane monster shredder! This video lesson is a great tribute to Alexi. Thanx
Didn't even have to watch the whole video. Thank you! Alexi was a special guitarist. He will be missed.
I requested him months ago!! Still have his pick and two metal method DVDs. Alexi is unbelievable, such another tragic loss. Thanks B🐓
I had no idea he had died, until i just clicked on this lesson.
My God, 2020 just keeps pushing into the new year.
First i thought it was '21, then they said his family waited to announce it............fkin 2020!
RIP Alexi. Alexi was monstrous live, he was friends with many of the unsung Scandinavian shredders, also had a huge Black Metal influence. You can hear Tony MacAlpine, and Joey Taffola

I'm glad you highlighted the ideas from this album. It's become one of those lost guitar albums from the mid 2000's
Was hoping you would do a video for Alexi. CoB was a huge influence on me as a teen and he was a great player frontman. RIP.
You are one of my favorite lessons channels!
His licks always reminded me of Van Halen and maybe some other 80s bands. Something about the notes and intervals he played.
Cool 🎸, great lesson, good stories 👍well done brother 🤘
3:08 chills 😢, I love all the stories everyone had of him.
I remember being introduced to Alexi in 2005. Children of Bodom was so good! Alexi was on the cover of every other Guitar World magazine it seemed like.
Great stuff as usual. Thank you
thanks man alexi is a huge inspiration for me, this was a awesome video man thanks! maybe one day you can do more lahio licks!
Sounds clean sir! I like your sound. thank you for this Alexi Laiho's tribute RIP to the master. Subscribed✌🏽✌🏽🇺🇸
Late Night - Bodom Night. RIP Alexi
Great lesson as always and really cool trivia story on how the amazing Alexi, rip, pulled through that show! ❤️🎸🤟🏻🙌🏻
Excellent, David !!!! Alexi RIP
I think Alexi's injuries (mentioned in the lesson) led to his demise. A lot of people are feeling pretty low in Finland this week.
Great lesson and tribute, DB.
,,,,hey.!.......happy 2021.......... Sad news,,,,,,,tnx, for this lesson,,,,,your playing is what we ALL strive for..😯....glad to know who you are,,,,I will be paying close attention this winter to sharpen my skills....pat.(the dude who saw Rohdes,in 1981).!
Great stuff. Thanks
Great demo....
RIP Alex🙏
You are absolutely WOWWW...
Thanks dave for the lesson.
And you are a very technical guitarist!!! Wow...
I was at that show!
Those were the days_
Yesssss i swear I've been waiting on this forever now
🍺’ski nicely done. I’ve had a PRS S2 & I’ll tell ya the build quality is fantastic & they stay in tune flawlessly. New 🪓 is sounding sweet! 🤘
Ripping pentatonics and flat fives - Randy and Zack all the way - always appreciated!
Surprisingly, one his other big influences was Mark Knopfler. Even though their playing couldn’t be more different on the surface, you can definitely hear some MK influence. Knopfler is one of my favorites too and I was able to discover Alexi through him.
Change the b5 for b6 and you have Paul Gilbert
Sweet tapping and vibrato sir.
So good.... thank you! Appreciate your videos... love your story’s, mixed in with the guitar jamming! 🤘😎🎸
Awesome Video!!!, and I know I'm late but Happy New Year!
dude!!! I was at that show!!!! insane....that's twice...we been in musical congress!!!
Wicked sounds!! Thanks for putting this together for us!! Love your new guitar too!
1:04 on the actual song is such a sick part .
I was really thinking you were gonna include it .
Wow man, you are an awesome guitarist! Could you make a three licks video of Jason Becker? Just an awesome guitar player. Keep up the great work 👍🏻
Alexi was indeed a huge Roads fan. He was asked once in an interview: "If there's something you still wish to achieve, what would it be?" And he said he wants to play one show with Ozzy Osbourne
This is awesome

8:39 this lick from Children of Decadance
Alexi was special. He had some demons and it's so sad. I met him and he was so cool.
That was great
Make Another Alexi Laiho children of Bodom licks that are randy rhoads influenced licks lessons. Damn. Is there ANY guitar player you haven't already learned? Impressive.
RIP Alexi. This song is for you too now. EVIL DRIVE - Legends Never Die (OFFICIAL LYRIC VIDEO)
This one really hurt. Rest In power 💔
That guitar!!!!!!!!
Nice fiddle ‼️
I saw them in 09 too, in Seattle on the Lamb of God tour. Someone in the audience puked all over the main floor and they had to stop their set so the staff could come clean it up. 🤘
RIP Alexi😈🤘
PS- is that a new PRS for Christmas?
Had been a long time fan since 2005...
My youtube name originally was 6cob6hc6 haha
Great lesson and he will be missed.
He had the chops
While I wasn’t really a fan of COB, Alexi was a phenomenal musician. So sad to loose yet another talented guitarist.
Awesome lesson
Dig the cobra kai t shirt
Congrats on the new axe! The Christmas before last, i saw that a guitar I had been looking at went on sale. The PRS S2 Standard Singlecut Satin dropped down to $801 for one day. I jumped on it! I'm loving that Vela too. Congrats. RIP Alexi
Purchased Something Wild day 1
Huge loss
Alexi for the kids in the late 90s/early 2k was the Van Halen or Malmsteen of the previous (my) generation
All my friends in the band I was in during the late 00s were huge Alexi fans. I remember driving around with them aimlessly listening to the Are You Dead Yet album.
Back around 86 I heard malmsteen for the first time at 15 🤯 about 6 months after I started learning guitar, I took the rising force tape to my bluegrass guitar teacher & said I wanna learn this, He said yea kid you and me both😂
Any Chance you have checked out "Galactic Cowboys"? The first 2 albums are so bad ass!
Rip 🙏🏽 you should do another video on a criss oliva’s riff rip to another metal legend
Alexi Abides.
Here's Alexi playing it at NAMM. Starts about 5:20 th-cam.com/video/5UsS-wU48kw/w-d-xo.html
and there is also video of him playing the full song Sioux City Sarsaparilla with some different parts here and there I would defiantly check the video out th-cam.com/video/5UsS-wU48kw/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=BayAreaBackstage go to 5:21 min mark on video
That guitar you're playing sounds and looks amazing! What model is it? Killer lesson as always.
Can someone please explain to me what the hell is going on at 32 seconds here: th-cam.com/video/RFPMG6y-uZY/w-d-xo.html
I've been playing for several years. I know how to sweep pick. This....is not that. It's like he's playing a muted chord and somehow making it sound like a sweep.....and.....he's 15
I have no idea who the hell you are? But you now have a new follower!! Damn it!! You are smooth!! Texas here
I could always hear the George Lynch influence in him. 😊
I didn't know he died.
David, just for future clarification (you already know this), but "drop D" (just the low E string) is not the same as tuning down a whole step to D (all 6 strings).
Do some Gus G next.
How about some CKY....? You bringing up atreyu made me think of seeing them.....
God Forbid is SO underrated. They never got the credit they deserved. Maybe they can get some Late Night treatment?
Cool.
BTW
THIS IS M A G A COUNTRY! 🇺🇸😎
