    Bad breath, or halitosis, is an unpleasant odor that emanates from the mouth.
    It can be caused by a number of factors, including poor dental hygiene, sinus infections and dry mouth.
    However, the most common cause of bad breath is oral bacteria that thrive in the mouth.
    Dry mouth. This is the most common cause of bad breath and it can be caused by medications, dehydration and an inadequate intake of water or other fluids.
    Dry mouth can also occur during sleep if you breathe through your mouth during the night.
    Poor oral hygiene. Brushing and flossing your teeth regularly helps prevent tooth decay and gum disease, which can lead to bad breath.
    If you have diabetes or other medical conditions that affect your immune system, you may have more plaque buildup than other people.
    Dietary choices that cause malodor (such as garlic, onions or spicy foods).
    Certain diseases or health conditions (such as gastroesophageal reflux disease [GERD], sinusitis or lung disease).
    Poor oral hygiene habits such as not brushing and flossing regularly, smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol before bedtime and chewing tobacco.
    Bad breath can affect anyone regardless of age or gender.
    While it’s easy to brush off as nothing more than a minor annoyance, bad breath can have long-term effects on your health and quality of life.
    The good news is that bad breath can be overcome with a little effort and perseverance.
