As an avid upland and dog guy, this was without a doubt my most favorite episode you have ever put out. I'd give a weeks pay to hunt with Ronnie. I am putting this on my bucket list of bird hunts.
If you want a location in Colorado to get on them, let me know. We took several with bow and arrow while on a September elk hunt. Great eating bird, not difficult to take.
I use to get called that when I moved to Montana, funny thing is, it really wasn't any diffrent from hiking in the blueridge to me, just rockier and higher altitude, at times. But ironically I met alot of montanaens that couldn't keep up with me.
grouse hunt is by far my favorite hunt mainly because of my dad that bring me with him since im 5 years old .. im 33 and he just got 70 now and we still go together each season
It's a good thing this came out today and not tomorrow. I'm getting hitched and me taking 20 minutes out of the honeymoon to watch this wouldn't play well.
Dude, you ought to be able to squeeze 20 minutes of time to yourself even on a honeymoon. If you can’t get 20 minutes to yourself, how will you ever get to hunt? Set the standard early that you need time to yourself.
I loved this episode. It reminds me of my first pheasant hunt with my dad in SW Kansas. What a big deal it was to finally get to go with Dad. Some of the best memories of my life.
Steve hiking this 55 year old guy to death and laughing about it...LOL. this old guy has actually worked his ass off his entire life, 5-6 days a week. Ruined his knees and hips. And Steve is younger and healthy. And he walks him up there on the mountain..LOL. Thanks Buddy...
Love this one. That said, love them all. Reminds me of going out trapping rabbits on my horse and cart at Narromine as a kid. Back when you could carry a rifle in Australia.
Awesome! One of my favorite birds to hunt, and thankfully hugely underrepresented in the hunting media. Not many folks are willing to put in the work it sometimes takes to get into them.

He’s added fishing series’ called “das boat” and “fur hat ice tour.” Also check out his “Back 40” series. They are all great. His narrating is definitely awesome and I love his perspective on hunting because it gave me a tangible explanation for how I feel about hunting. He was able to get me to explain and understand how I felt about hunting and feeding ones body and soul.

She was the best bird hunting dog that existed in Chile in the early 70s . My dad later got a Brittany spaniel here in the US. Well, let's just say not even close she even retrieved ducks !
I love how Steve always cooks the wild game at the end of the video. This guy can really cook! I killed a rough grouse one time and pan fried it, it was the toughest thing I've ever tried to eat and I've never had the desire to kill another one. LOL
Thanks to Steve I went on my first scouting trip on VA National forest land 3 days ago and I'm going back for a 3 day archery whitetail hunt and taking my .22 roger for small game after christmas. It's awesome being up in the mountains of N.America
I love hunting dusky grouse with my German shorthairs here in Wyoming. I look for young forest and lots of open edges. Better in Sept. They start moving up into high mature forest later in October. I put bells on my dogs because bears in good bird habitat. Nice looking Braccos
Duskeys like an escape route. They are very often on the edge of a hill side or cliff they can use to elude predators. You'll also find them near water sources.
My wife and I love your show. I would never watch anybody else upland bird hunt but your commentary and the way you dive into every hunt like it might be your last no matter what the game is just awesome. Love it man have watched every episode of last 2 seasons very excited to see season 3!!!!!

Great video, guys! Hunting blues is a fun slog. There is always slope to contend with, but it takes you to some pretty fine places. Hunting with dogs just makes it that much more enjoyable. I have hunted blue grouse for decades in the Rockies, near the Colorado/Wyoming border. The one thing I have heard about hunting blue grouse is, if you want to get one, walk around the woods for 3-4 hours, then shoot one off the hood of your truck when you get back. It;s blue grouse, never dusky.

These birds look a lot like some birds I saw hiking up Longs Peak in Colorado. Just past the timberline hiking through a rock field. Looked off to the side of the trail and there they were, two feet away from me just sitting in the rocks. Three of them. They didn’t strike me as particularly intelligent birds.
