I totally admire the man. Born and raised in Singapore and now living in another country, I begin to see the intergrity and brilliance of the man as well as the love he truly has for the country. I watched him as a child and observed the difficult decisions he had to make for the greater good of allin Singapore. I wish many of the other world leaders were like him.
the blame partly lies on the parents, or the former generations. No one wants their children to suffer. But, when people work hard to achieve a good life and pamper their kids by keeping them safe in all aspects of life they are essentially raising a caged animal that does not know how to live in the wild.
Thank you all for the respect you have for our founding father, Lee Kuan Yew. I am deeply touched by most of the comments here. It's sad to see some Singaporeans hate him and think that he is a dictator. Without enforcing law and education, Singapore wouldn't be as prosperous as today. I hope that one day people will understand his effort and appreciate what he has done for Singapore. I am devastated by the passing of our beloved founding father, I hope he is now reunited with his lovely wife in heaven. He will live in our heart, remembering him as our hero. His achievements will add a colorful chapter in history, his legacy passes on to our younger generations. RIP Sir.. You will never be forgotten.
I am a Jamaican and I honestly think that LKY is spot on. He's always been my favorite world figure (despite his rather brusque nature). If we had the same collective drive and resolve as the Singaporeans then we would be the gem of the Western Hemisphere. My hat is off to you Mr. Lee
The videos here should be made mandatory listening and learning for the present and future generations of Singaporeans. Lee Kuan Yew is the Chu'ke of Singapore!
He is fully aware of one of the core elements that constructs the prosperity of Singapore (different from New Zealand he mentioned) is hardworking spirit of new arriving citizens who are eager to get out from poverty.
He's speaking the truth. Of course, not every youth is like this, but sadly a lot of youths are. On the other hand, children learn what they live, it really has something to do with how they were brought up. My husband teaches design at a national polytechnic, and it frustrates him to see how his students don't know how to think for themselves, and sometimes don't even care to try. They're simply too used to a pampered life where almost everything's been arranged and done for them by either the parents or the domestic help. Just take a look at any food court or restaurant, many of the kids who are already 7 or 8 are still being fed by adults.
Mr Lee you are a man of principle. And this what Singapore is today. You and your team will always be remember as our Nation Builder. From a backwater to what we are today.
I'm sorry.. As a 21 year old Singaporean, the past 21 years of my life living in Singapore is far from 'luxury'. I had my first job at 13, work part time here and there because both my parents are unable to provide for all 4 of us.. Growing up, I was never close to my parents because dad was abusive and mom was always at work. But I think I turned out alright because 1) I recently graduated with a diploma in Biomedical Science and 2) I got accepted into University and will be enrolling in 2016.
RIP. Thank you for dedicating your life to making this tiny country a great one. I may not agree with everything you did but you did what you believed what right and today we all have a lovely home and an exceptional country.
LKY during his lifetime was truly a man with courtesy and exemplary kindness to all races. My father who used to work with PUB had various chances to repair utilities in Oxley villa and shared with me how nice LKY was to him and his work mate. Even Late President Devan Nair (held umbrella for workers to his home doorstep during rainy days) and Dr. Toh Chin Chye were extremely nice human beings. So as we disagree to some PAP policies, we must remember their good characters.
I know what he is talking about being a child in the 6os. Roads were flooded so you could not get to the bustop without sticks to show where not to step into the drain. There was no MRT or covered walkways. Now we have nice drainage systems. We worked at two jobs sometimes or did double shifts. There were many changes in the education and social life and we had to absorb the changes and move ahead with it. No personal computers then. Things were done the hard way. Computers changed everything from the 80s onwards. Youth growing up now with opportunities and benefits available should work hard.
The examples given by Mr Lee Kuan Yew are just what the youth of Singapore, need to hear and understand, if there is to be a prosperous and vibrant country in 30 to 50 years time. The best way to learn, is through example of the people that have gone before us. This viseo is a real eye opener, and so true.
This gusy is tough , true leader, i wish we can have kind of Leader. One is mr.Thaksin. I am very pround of you guys has this kind of leader. Looks his voice always strong , sharp and clear :)
Wow!!! I love Lee Kuan Yew!!! It is the same problem happening here in the U.S. People don't care to succeed. Its a big problem because now we have a lot of people who are quantity and not quality. No offense to my fellow Americans but in truth we have lost our drive to succeed. (Of course, there are those who strive very hard but across the board we are losing our quality) I want to move my wife and daughters to Singapore! I believe that at the age of 16 every youth should be required to go through a course like a college class or classes that put you through struggle. 1) A class where you go hungry and have to live the struggle as a lot of poor immigrants do. 2) A class where you start with only one set of clothes... shirt pants and no shoes. 3) A class where you are a begger for a month... or so. 4) Many more classes like these to wake up the fight(drive to succeed) in every man/women. People now-a-days, in many developed countries, have it to easy and don't appreciate what they have. Courses like these would give them a true perspective of the struggle. I addition a course like this would be perfect for Singapore because of the form of government that it has.
Hello, acajudi100: You said (six months ago) "Chicago needs the laws of Singapore! you are so correct. I would relocate there in aheartbeat. I love Singapore!" Certainly, I 'get' your enthusiasm because it is easy to see that this man cares about the country and he is concerned about how in the world the place can survive with soft children. What I don't get is the "I would relocate there in a heartbeat" part. What does that really mean?
haha really? actually for outsiders , our laws might seem incredibly strict or even have an atmosphere of repression but really, if you are good honest people, its actually quite a free place
I'm not close to my parents as well. Don't worry so much it is more common than you think, most parents spend a lot of time at work to provide for the family. When you have kids of your own you will know.
Being in poverty is generally a motivation to work harder and to improve. But what happens if the people that live in poverty have no intentions on improving because they never understood that life could be better?.
you are absolutely right -- we love this man, he has great mind, always plan many years ahead and do things firmly and as such did offend some people. however this world need firm government and not the sissy type or else the country will be in a mess, so like it or not , LKY and his team is world best , althoug not perfect as there are no perfect government in this world except GOD
Well I do agree with his idea of driving youth's spirit to work hard and give better efforts, but I think motivation does not always have to come from avoiding the state of being poor (by all means, we have to get rid of poverty). Think of Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, etc; they were not born out of poverty. many of successful people are driven more by interests, passions, and cultivating unique talents rather than the ambitions of achieving rich and well-being status. Just my opinions~
Yea we have Rojak and jalok here in Malaysian. Don't take much as long as you're somewhat related to somebody, you're guaranteed a post or place into the govt. not much intellect required, but most of time pure brutality will do thus any other measures are alternative while deeply doubt on the filtering and psychopathology test which usually are not required or general speaking we have no such standard yet.
we are to be blamed because we worship much our children tt much... provide everything for them as if they have no brain and limbs to make it fot themselves.. we who destyroy them
Yup, he makes total sense. Our country is very vulnerable with no hinterland, even hong kong is well taken care of by mother china. There is only a backstaber beside us.
Most people blame the large influx of foreigners on him because he introduced the "Stop at Two" campaign which caused Singapore's current birth rate to be so low. I think it is stupid to blame him. Most developed country faces this problem. Not just Singapore. Sooner or later, without that campaign, Singapore would still face such problem, assuming that Singapore could develop to a first world country if without that campaign.
I have to disagree with what he says. True what he did in the 60s, 70s, 80s is necessary. You have no time to relax when you are poor. You have no time to reflect on your happiness when you are poor. All you think about is money3 in those days. Now that Singapore is already a rich country, I think the people should be allowed to hold back a bit and enjoying life more. What is the purpose of being a rich country but you have a suicide rate like Japan. What is the purpose of becoming a rich country when the people are not happy. Economic development, should be translated into happiness among its people. I think LKY is a great leader. He did what is necessary at that time, but I dont think it should be applicable today.
Some One needs the other bloomberg singapore voice ? but she is not a Malaysian born hokkien My family is still very Malaysian and we never think like bloomberg!! My name is still Mrs Chew Lee
Pretty damn true. With that being said, all I see from my peers are how older generations of people are trying their best to give us a hard time at work just for the sake of giving us a taste of how they 'suffered'. Not sure if I am in the same income range or what but the only people I see are in comfort are often fucked up assholes that no one gives a shit except for people who are equally fucked up.
We have Mayoral elections in London soon, so its a shame that he doesn't stand for Mayor of London (as he can, being a Commonwealth citizen). I even wonder what he would say on the rioting we had last August.
Let kids joined some camps like giving them a small amount. Setting up some stalls with the basic necessities so that they understand that with so little money, how they are going to use it wisely. If they have had chose to buy something for play, they will eventually left with not enough money to buy foods for the following few days. This will let them understand that without planning and budgeting, they may end up in hunger.
Chicago with the laws of Singapore?? Like no ownership of firearms, that's one. Guess what happened, rocket high murder rate. Yeah they enacted laws similar to Singapore and that's what you get. Singapore is an easy state to police because it's only a small island.
+Constantine Joseph That's because Americans, take their constitution seriously, right to bear arms and free speech. Those are the only two that most Americans remember.
What he had done for Singaporean and his contribution to the world in making it a better place to live. We Singaporean are blessed to have him to be our Prime Minister.
He doesn't need a script to help him with his speech. What a great man with a great memory .
Singapore has been lucky to have this man in charge. This is exactly what a government should be.
Greatest leader of the post-colonial era.

How can this Man with his age but still has his intelectual with clearly answer and details with everything asked
From the bottom of my heart,, maximum respect for the greatest prime minister in modern history...

Every youth in Singapore should listen to this
Well said. Indeed those born in blessings does not know how blessed they are.
I just love how pragmatic he is and I truly respect him for that. He has my fullest support!
The videos here should be made mandatory listening and learning for the present and future generations of Singaporeans. Lee Kuan Yew is the Chu'ke of Singapore!
to my country's first Prime Minister, RIP Mr Lee Kuan Yew,
from jeremy, one of ur beneficiaries & a proud citizen of Singapore, 23-3-2015.
Lee Kwan Yew, Thank you. We miss you. You are our inspiration.
He is fully aware of one of the core elements that constructs the prosperity of Singapore (different from New Zealand he mentioned) is hardworking spirit of new arriving citizens who are eager to get out from poverty.
This should be heard for the youth of the whole world!
After watching this interview, My respect for him grew even more.
He's speaking the truth. Of course, not every youth is like this, but sadly a lot of youths are. A visionary leader , I wish we will have leaders like LKY in my beloved country , the Philippines
Mr Lee you are a man of principle. And this what Singapore is today. You and your team will always be remember as our Nation Builder. From a backwater to what we are today.
LKY, we Singapoean will miss you!
This man is really awesome....
He is so pragmatic and forward looking. I am an Indian, but I admire what Mr LKY has done for Singapore.

What Ah Gong said is right, we Singaporeans should stick together and fight, don't let the FTs outdo and bully us into submission!
what's FT?
Love it!

lee is the king of sg
Agree VERY MUCH with what he has said. Wake up, Singapore!
@imaginator I used to disagree with him so much. As i get older i find all my views converging with him.
Yup, he makes total sense. Our country is very vulnerable with no hinterland, even hong kong is well taken care of by mother china. There is only a backstaber beside us.
LKY is very wise
Ermm what did Mr Lee meant when he said "born in a bad year" at 0:29
very good
Most people blame the large influx of foreigners on him because he introduced the "Stop at Two" campaign which caused Singapore's current birth rate to be so low. I think it is stupid to blame him. Most developed country faces this problem. Not just Singapore. Sooner or later, without that campaign, Singapore would still face such problem, assuming that Singapore could develop to a first world country if without that campaign.
I heard it as "born and bred here" at 0:29

LKY is d best example PM in Asia.he talk intellectually.how nice if he can be Msia PM.
cool!!
that sounds like young people anywhere in the world
youths in uni?
True sir, and they are so disrespectful!
remember
nothing like the old guards...they're much more intelligent, determined and capable
Let kids joined some camps like giving them a small amount. Setting up some stalls with the basic necessities so that they understand that with so little money, how they are going to use it wisely.
