I was present at Mr.Lee’s rally held at a open field in Siglap in 1958.I was 10 and I understood every word he said and why he won and became Singapore’s 1st P.M. while the other political parties were either slandering or talking absolute rubbish he talked about the future, building strong foundation’s. I’m 73 now and have lived thru all that he mentioned. Rest In Peace Sir, you not only had the trust but also the love off your fellow citizens.

9:15 The communists wanted a different system (Singapore demographic = 70% Chinese at the time)
    12:45 "Communism can't win in a multi-racial society."
14:40 "I was a lawyer, I understood completely what Constitutional practices were. [The opposition] didn't."
22:55 "What made me a leader was, when the time came, I was the best speaker [in English]."
23:50 Mandarin = the Chinese language of the educated
26:20 Learning to speak was innate, but also came from wanting to be a lawyer. His parents suffered in the 1930's, and their friends who were doctors, engineers or lawyers didn't suffer so badly because they had a [high-value] profession. Took part in debate in school, became chairman of Cambridge debating club. *Being able to give clever speeches is a useful technique - but to get across, you must have a deep message that you must be able to put with **_total conviction,_** then they believe you.*
29:30 Having total conviction > Just having a clever speech
42:15 Authority = comes from demonstrating TRUST in a time of crisis. It's difficult to establish it in times of calm. When the chips are down, and you can get eliminated in a very unpleasant way, and you show that you're prepared for it and you'll fight for them - it makes a difference after that.
49:20 Personal characteristics that define *LKY's leadership: Consistent/Congruent, Determination, Communication/Persuasion of ideas & POV, True to friends and colleagues* (don't place trust in people who don't deserve it, but those you trust you must give total authority and mandate to do it their way "Use a man don't distrust him, if you distrust him, don't use him." *EQ = Emotional Intelligence. No leader can last long if his EQ is weak, because you've got to depend on other people to do the job.* So if you're hoodwinked and place trust in people who don't share your views, you're in trouble).
55:40 Emotional Intelligence > IQ. Without EQ, you're unable to sense or feel a person - which is necessary when leading people to work together in a concerted direction/effort. Being able to see THROUGH a person, or a candidate.
1:01:00 LKY ranks his IQ at 120
1:02:04 EQ / IQ combination. If I'm going to get a man to do a job that handles other people, a department or a team, he should have enough IQ to master the details so that he understands the total project - but *GOOD EQ so that he knows who to appoint to what particular sector and who will work with whom. Because if you can't get a good team going, then it's a failure - because he can't do it himself, he's got to get a team to work it for him.* (leader psychology and understanding others' blueprints)
1:10:00 Rooting out corruption. Showing up wearing white shirts and white trousers as a symbolic gesture.
1:18:00 Family values and respect for authority in Asia.
1:25:40 Leadership has to be exercised in the context of the society that it is in - without that context, it doesn't make sense.
1:46:20 The more deep-seated emotionally a problem is, the slower it is to resolve.
1:50:30 Physical infrastructure is easy, but you've got to change the behavior of people. SG inhabitants living in shantytowns, peeing in elevators after they moved into high rises.
1:51:00 Sensors in elevators that would catch people when they pee inside the lifts.
1:52:15 You've got to start with a vision, and you've got to _sell_ that vision.
1:53:20 Younger generations' preoccupation with wealth.
1:57:00 SG has airlines coming in from 80 cities around the world, every day. 5-Star hotels serving food from anywhere in the world - you can have Texas steak, or Californian steak. New technologies have "shrunk oceans."
1:59:30 Leaders must have higher energy level, the ability to project himself and his ideas, and to the desire almost instinctively to say, "let's do something better." Wanting to do something for his fellow man, not just for himself and his family.
2:03:10 "They are going to judge us, and invest or not invest, depend on how they see we're running this place." (SG stateroom)
2:06:00 "You can galvanize people easier when they are in a state of fright." (crisis scenario)
2:10:25 Leaders should write off mistakes and cut your losses as quickly as possible. The leader accepts full and public responsibility. The buck stops with me - otherwise I'm not the boss.
2:24:00 If your message is one of despair, then you should not be a leader. *You must give people HOPE - hope of improving their condition.* In the inevitable moments you feel very down (physically or emotionally, or because the world has turn adverse against you). If you're in that condition, the first thing you should do is get a good night's sleep or get in a swim, chase the cobwebs out of your mind. *IF YOU'RE NOT PHYSICALLY FIT, YOU'RE GOING TO MAKE MISTAKES. YOU MUST STAY PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY FIT.*
2:25:20 Cycling and swimming always, even when he travels. Part of keeping balance. Meditation is one way of *calming yourself.* At the end of 20min - 30min, pulse rate can go down from 100bpm too 60bpm. Still your mind and empty your mind.
2:27:00 If you're not in good shape (physically fit), you're going to make mistakes - and that's disastrous.
2:27:20 Reading for relaxation, to keep his mind sharp. You can't just switch off and go to sleep. Surfing the TV to see what's the drivel they're putting out and seeing what other people are watching (LOL). *Reading takes you into a different world for awhile.*
2:17:20 You will never get 100% consensus in views. In a multi-racial situation like SG, you're lucky if you can get 70%.
2:31:10 MISSION and PURPOSE as a leader. Without that, you're not a good leader. When you face setbacks, you'll give up. (missionary > mercenary)

He was captivating and i listened intently on the radio when ever he is on. I was impressed and listened to this great man. He is indeed great. After he got elected i listened to him still. He got rid of the corruption. He was brilliant absolutely brilliant. He won all the elections and his entourage also did the same. He weeded out all opposition to his government in open competition. Great comparisions are made between singapore and surrounding countries often. But it is Singapore that stands out. I am now 78 and have seen most if not all that happens in this region. But travelling around with a red colored SG passport with no need for visa in major cities of the world, proves SG government had done a fantastic diplomatic job, far better than others. The iron-fist style ruling of LKY did good for SG during his time.
