I just started recently getting into these handhelds. Can you point me towards a video of yours to find a handheld that can play PSP but isn't very big. I used to play on my phone but I'm tired of on-screen controls and crappy third party controllers
If you put up community posts here on TH-cam with your simple pass fail chart I think it will go a long way in the absence of a full review. Maybe website to archive these charts would be nice to reference occasionally as well.
I think your decision to change the way you do things will be great in the long run. Whatever OS version the device is operating will be great to know too. I honestly don’t mind you not having a review ready on the day of release. Thanks Taki!
Type-C charging should definitely be kept in your pass/fail list! It irks me to no end when companies try and cheap out on the $0.02 resistors that enable that functionality.
Do you mean when charging only works on USBA -> USBC cables and not USBC -> USBC? This happens on my my anbernic devices and my TRIMUI SMART PRO. It's annoying as hell!
The reason I like you over some of the other handheld reviewers is you’re not afraid to go in on these guys for their mistakes. And you’re very good at calling them out. And it’s pretty wholesome how you’re giving TH-cam money to your kid that’s awesome! I always check your videos to know if I should buy a device or not. You, Retro Game Corps, Wulf Den are my favorites! Keep it up bro thanks again.

ETA Prime used to be my overall favorite but he has been doing a bit of shilling as of late. I really like the Pass/Fail checklist. Thank you for including Type C Charging, hopefully that will be encouragement for manufacturers to include that more often!
@@ryantwomey3463 I think it's more that a lot of cheaper handhelds won't charge on a USB C to USB C cable, only A to C. I don't remember the last time I heard of a handheld that used Micro USB-B to charge, honestly. It becomes a pathetic thing for them to exclude when you find out it's a couple of tiny resistors they're not including in the charging system.

I have always liked your reviews for this very reason. You ACTUALLY look into things like screen tearing or stuttering and you just give us all the information we need to make a purchase. You don’t just automatically praise a machine because everyone else likes it. Good on you
I think that quick list of pass/fail would be great on those you have access to but choose not (or don't have time to..) do a full review of. I very much enjoy your videos and find a great deal of valuable information in them. Thank you.
I do like this approach. More importantly I love you bringing your audience in to your thought process, shows respect for your audience. Also the checklist should be included even in full review vids as a cheat sheet
You definitely have a discerning eye and go more in depth. Provide the information you can, but just remember you’re one reviewer, and you can’t keep the entire industry at bay. Do what you can! You’ve got a good audience here.
Love your work Taki! I greatly appreciate all the work you put into keeping us informed! I hope you keep making review videos, but I understand how tough that balancing act can be. Always remember you are greatly appreciated!!!
Taki is my favourite handheld reviewer. The level of detail is much better and there's far less bias / conflicts of interest than other channels. Appreciate the videos you do, don't be so hard on yourself - you're doing a great job and your son will be proud of you (never forget what is most important).
You are the GOAT! Love all your honesty. You may make mistakes, and if you do I know you have the ability to make course corrections. Appreciate your perspective, and I’m learning so much from you and your channel!
I totally appreciate someone very honest with their approach and criteria. Striving to inform us accurately and correct past issues it very USER oriented. You remind me of th Gamers Nexus in retro form. Good work!
I love your stuff! Absolute no shade to him, but after realizing ETA Prime wasn't one to produce thoughtful and descriptive review, I ended landing on your channel. I greatly appreciate the care and analysis you put into your reviews.
Have always trusted your content because of the thoughtfulness that you put into your reiew videos and your candor. Another great example with this video. Love the new suggested approach. Hope you don't get burned out.
With the number of companies involved and the pace at which new models are releasing, there simply is no way tp review absolutely everything. There's nothing wrong with being selective. And frankly, while I occasionally watch other streamer reviews, I only take two seriously, Taki and ETA Prime. When it comes time to make a purchase, your word is gold. I would much rather take whatever you two have time to give us and know it's high quality content with impeccable standards than end up with both of you burning out trying to cater to the unrealistic whims of the masses.
This idea is amazing for the units you can't cover in depth. Plus it lets lots of your community who have installed more copies of retroarch than they can count, it's a way faster way of gathering information and making decisions on what we *really* care about when purchasing a product like this.
It's cool to bring this informative pass/fail check. Some youtubers got big and maybe are praising handhelds too much, instead of making good points reviews before actual product release.
We appreciate the thoughtfulness you put into your process. If I see a handheld that looks interesting, you're one of the channels I go to before buying because of this. I like the idea of dropping a note if you're not reviewing something to give some input into potential up sides and down sides, sounds line a great way to get data out without spending every waking non-dayjob minute filming a device instead of being with family. Keep up the good work, it matters to your audience.
Somewhat new to your channel but I have been through quite a bit of your backlog, and i really do appreciate your analysis. You arent being negative, but critical, which is honest and very refreshing. The way you critique is definitely underappreciated and i really like the way you organize your videos. Good luck in your future endeavors! 🍻
Haven't watched your stuff a lot, but I am _stunned_ you were doing all that with a full-time job and raising a kid. Mad respect, but your health and family comes first
I started building a video game 3 years ago so that I can take care of my family, friends and myself. There's no point in being successful if you have nobody to share it with. Keep up the awesome videos man, good things are coming your way!
never add comments to almost no video, but I add now, you surelly seem serious and analitycal , and the approach is very good and growing on lerning, this is why I am happy of subscribbing you, thank you for the little details.
Your approach is very pragmatic, and I respect and appreciate that. You have a clear and structured method for reviewing products, grounded in your personal experience with them. As viewers, it's important for us to understand that a review represents a snapshot based on a specific period of product use. You consistently remain true to yourself and to us in your videos, which is commendable. Personally, I don't expect you to review every product, even though I would love it if you could. For example, I got the Anbernic 405v and added it to my collection even though you haven't mentioned it. Some of us are here for confirmation, but we understand and accept what you personally choose to talk about and prefer. Additionally, I don't understand why this video is not monetised; I believe all your content deserves to be. The main reason I follow you is for your opinion and insight. The time and effort you invest in creating these reviews should be recognised and rewarded. I'm also eagerly looking forward to your update on the framework you mentioned for rating handheld devices. I hope that’s still in the works. Keep it up, Taki!
I find your channel is brilliant. I was almost going to buy the ANBERNIC RG Cube but I found your review and it made me rethink and realise it wasn’t ideal for my user case. Instead watching your review on the Retroid Pocket 4/Pro was a better fit. I really like the fact you tell it how it is objectively on any issues you find. I think being selective is a necessity you can’t review everything. The way forward you mention is a good idea. Just glad you quality content is to continue and you seem to enjoy what you are doing. Great channel and great way to fund your son’s college education. Cheers
The reason I prefer to watch your videos on a handheld is because, given some of your previous reviews, I feel more comfortable with your reviews than many others because you cover good *and* bad aspects of each device. I'm not one of those who is disappointed when you don't review a particular handheld, though; I just like getting fairly unbiased info when I can. I can definitely appreciate the changes in how you want to handle these issues. Thanks for letting us know.
I think this is a very fair approach that both satisfies your initial goal of sharing information, while being a little more considerate of your time. In the example you put a pass/fail image (and description) perhaps it's all explained in the short hand but even if it's not it gives enough of a start for someone to look into it further should they want more information.
Thoughts on doing a pocket test? Like basically answering the questions: - Does this fit in an empty pocket? - How about with a wallet or keys? - Would it fit into a cargo pants pocket? - Inside a jacket? - How about a bag or purse? - Would it require it's own case? (like a steam deck for example) - Which situation does this device feel the most comfortable in ? - Does it feel burdensome to carry around? Basically its one of the things which is very hard to fully ascertain just by numbers alone, since theres minutia everywhere here (thumbsticks catching on to pants pocket, awkward bulges, awkward weight relative its size, pointy edges, etc).
I like your approach and I want to say I appreciate that you do not give glowing reviews on everything you touch as many retro tubers do. Their reviews are worthless to me where yours add value
Hey Taki.. the only review we need is yours. Regardless who made a video first, we will always wait for your take and review of a product before we consider buying that device.
You and ETA Prime have the best reviews on handheld systems that I've found on TH-cam. You both have different styles for conducting a review video, but they're both detailed and informative. I don't believe your checklist will hurt your quality; I do believe it will streamline the process for you and the viewer. It's possible that devices may not always fit the checklist format; for this reason, it may be a good idea to add a misc or side note section. On the note of other sections to your checklist; sections for UI, installation and management, portability, ergonomics, and battery life would be good to include or mention since they're handhelds. Thank you for your work on device reviews and good luck with your future videos.
I believe this change is good. Lots of reviewers miss talking about the bad things, which can make people buy stuff that's not good. Can you also talk about the quality of the buttons and dpad, and if there's any input lag, if you have time?
This is a great idea. I can always look elsewhere for other things. You seem to have enough knowledge to pick up on issues that are often overlooked. Also, quick and to the point? I fucking love it!
Taki, I've been saying this for a while now. There are some terrible "reviewers" on TH-cam. No standards, no empirical data, no deep dives, and apparently their opinions are for sale. You are the GOAT, and while I wait for a new Taki video I'll check out Phawx, RGC and TechDweeb.
Appreciate this video and the attention to detail. Frustrating that these companies don’t just engage more with the open communities that have formed around them.
Hey Taki Another thing you could bring attention to the companies and the public is about the cardinal snapping of the analog sticks It basically makes the controls in 3d games feel terrible, try playing mario 64 or mario sunshine and notice how horrible it is I is so bad to the point that I avoid playing games that uses the analog sticks entirely or use another bluetooth controller connected to have decent controls I've been trying to help anbernic fix this but I'm not a programmer so I can only explain the issue and ask them to fix But I do believe that if enough people talk about it they'll fix it Also this is something that affects all other portable handhelds with exception of ayaneo and ayn I think
Valid points, also important to note that anbernics customer service is very slow, and at times their responses are for incorrect devices/errors. I wondered what they were smoking when they told me I needed to reflash the sdcard in my RG405M... Miyoo customer service got back to me within an hour with an issue I had, and shipped out replacement parts same day so props to them! Now retroid... I had 2 devices with issues due to very poor manufacturing. Their QC is severely lacking so these days I stick to samsung phones with backbone controllers, and the miyoo mini+ for those holidays where I want something pocketable.
I like the change. I think one thing that would help would be a sliding scale/history of fail. For example anbernic and retroid very good at resolving issues with software when notified about the issues. Miyoo not so much, including that info during the review can also give incentive to the companies to fix the errors when they’re brought to attention. You’re the reason I bought an RP3+ and loved it (until water got spilled on it and it completely died) :( you do a great job already pointing out the pros and cons of each system already. I can’t wait to see what comes next.
Nice video. Its a shame these companies seemingly don't do QA, especially considering that they're selling so many units. But good on you for striving to put out the best reviews.
One of the most frustrating things about buying anything these days is that you can never really know if reviewers are trustworthy. But it's always reassuring to see folks like you, Retro Game Corps and Wolf Den being unafraid to voice their concerns when somethings wrong.
I love that your proceeds go to your kids college fund. You should try a QR links on birthday invitations. That’s what we do for our son’s college savings plan and it’s worked really well. Maybe you could sell stickers for your channel? I’d certainly buy one. Maybe a small donation page to buy a coffee or something?
Taki thanks for giving your totally unbiased approach to handhelds. I have to say I would love to see some more long term follow-ups on these devices. My 1st was a GPD Win Mini. I don't know its because its my only handheld that I use a lot but I have some issues with it. One is AMD drivers, since Oct 2023 which was the best, I haven't seen an error free windows boot. I get TDR timeout errors. The other is the analog sticks. If you open the back panel and remove the 2 screws which hold each stick in, the brass nut that is only pressed fit into the plastic frame has backed its way out! I glued it back in and then weeks later the brass post on the opposite side wiggled its way out! This happens if you play AAA games or any game that requires you to press L3 / R3 repeatedly. If you are only doing retro games this will widely go unoticed. You might even have it but wont see untill you take out the 2 screws. Even without this issue overall I really wish I could buy better quality sticks if there was a third-party option out that. There is lots of room in this shell to DIY. I really love the clamshell form factor. I've used my Mini to death and even my original thumbs have caps peeled off. I used psvita cap replacements in the meantime. I hear switch replacement caps will also fit but I like how the vita ones have 6 different shapes. Any way I digress.
I like the pass-fail list. The only thing i would change. is a grading system. A,B,C,F With A being Good and F being needs work. This way it's easier to consume information.
I love your videos and seeing a new one is always a treat, please don't ever work harder than you're able to. You are far more important thab your output.
Storytime with Taki.

I just want to say, I love your work. I've definitely used your channel when buying my first device. Thank you for what you do.
Keep up the good work, it matters to your audience.
i’ve been watching your videos since i was in 9th grade, and tomorrow i’m graduating from high school
love you man
Modest, honest and a perfectionist.
That's why I watch, I'm content with my current device but your videos continue to intrigue.
Thank you so much for the kind words!
Haven't watched your stuff a lot, but I am _stunned_ you were doing all that with a full-time job and raising a kid.
Mad respect, but your health and family comes first
The 'baby hands' are always a welcome addition to any video!
Bloody fantastic review critique! Huge thanks for the full disclosure. You moved me man.
I started building a video game 3 years ago so that I can take care of my family, friends and myself. There's no point in being successful if you have nobody to share it with.
Keep up the awesome videos man, good things are coming your way!
Honesty in reviews. What the consumer needs. Thank you for the work you do!
2 jobs plus the channel?? You are a Beast! Thank you for the great reviews, but don't burn yourself out!
Thank you for this video and for giving us insight into your channel, history, and future story. We appreciate all of your videos.
never add comments to almost no video, but I add now,
you surelly seem serious and analitycal , and the approach is very good and growing on lerning, this is why I am happy of subscribbing you, thank you for the little details.
I thought I was going insane with the tearing/vsync/stutter issue on the RG35XX H, thank you for spotlighting it! Knulli is is great so far
Hey man, your reviews helped me select the Retroid Pro 4 and I enjoy it for what it is. So it's been super helpful!
Cheers
Def like the scorecard approach because you’re right. We novices need good help and advice
You are your kids hero. Take care fellow dad
Like basically answering the questions:
- Does this fit in an empty pocket?
- How about with a wallet or keys?
- Would it fit into a cargo pants pocket?
- Inside a jacket?
- How about a bag or purse?
- Would it require it's own case? (like a steam deck for example)
- Which situation does this device feel the most comfortable in ?
- Does it feel burdensome to carry around?
Basically its one of the things which is very hard to fully ascertain just by numbers alone, since theres minutia everywhere here (thumbsticks catching on to pants pocket, awkward bulges, awkward weight relative its size, pointy edges, etc).
I will add this!
You're a really incrdible youtuber and you truly make an effort at trying! Don't beat yourself up too much. Kepp making content! 🥰
Taki, your videos have helped me so much. I can not wait for your mister handheld, you have such a good view on handhelds.
I like your approach and I want to say I appreciate that you do not give glowing reviews on everything you touch as many retro tubers do. Their reviews are worthless to me where yours add value
Thanks for covering such a complicated topic. It shows you really care about the quality of videos here.
More content is better!
An impressive video, Taki. Anyone who is so strongly guided by integrity has my respect.
Love the objective metrics and they will really make your channel stand out.
Appreciate you for not keeping us in the dark. We need more honest reviewers like you and RGC.
you being 100% real and honest is why i prefer to only watch your videos on reviews
Hey Taki.. the only review we need is yours.
Look no matter what you do there would still be people who get against you. Just be yourself be real. Keep reviewing good devices.
It's okay man, in doing we learn. Your reviews were already good, and they'll only get better.
Woman: we need to talk. Bad times.
Man: we need to talk.....about gaming!
This is a great idea, and we get input early enough to either dodge a handheld or hopefully know how to fix it.
More information for both company and consumer is always a good thing!
I think adding a why for pass/fail on the categories will help to understand it! Even if it's just in the short description.
Appreciate this video and the attention to detail. Frustrating that these companies don’t just engage more with the open communities that have formed around them.
Hey Taki
Another thing you could bring attention to the companies and the public is about the cardinal snapping of the analog sticks
It basically makes the controls in 3d games feel terrible, try playing mario 64 or mario sunshine and notice how horrible it is
I is so bad to the point that I avoid playing games that uses the analog sticks entirely or use another bluetooth controller connected to have decent controls
I've been trying to help anbernic fix this but I'm not a programmer so I can only explain the issue and ask them to fix
But I do believe that if enough people talk about it they'll fix it
Also this is something that affects all other portable handhelds with exception of ayaneo and ayn I think
You’re absolutely awesome dude! So wholesome!
Honest and smart guy on TH-cam, now that's a endangered species. Keep up the good work.
I like the pass-fail list. The only thing i would change. is a grading system. A,B,C,F With A being Good and F being needs work. This way it's easier to consume information.
Thanks for keeping it real with us. Your integrity is much appreciated.
I love your videos and seeing a new one is always a treat, please don't ever work harder than you're able to. You are far more important thab your output.
i love your content man. the only handheld reviewer i trust.
