i believe in GBA SP supremacy. i'm so excited to preorder the rg35xx SP ! it also has a classic gameboy edition. i only had a yellow powkiddy v90 before this
i think this is due to the "game" these companies play, like who releases first....so they release devices with obvious flaws just to be the first one....instead, i would prefer if they would take their time and than, release a device which is just good from front to back...no one would have a problem, having to wait 2-3 months in order to get a better device... but these companies tempt to release unfinished stuff and then, months later, here comes the plus version or whatever which is basically the same device, but with fixed flaws... this is just dumb... as a company, lets say anbernic. just let powkiddy, myiou etc release their stuff... take your time, fix everything BEFORE relasing, and THAN release to dump your competitors, with an overall nice product.... that would be much better. especially when you become a company that is known for being like that... so even your customers will say "Yeah, nice, myiou, nice butr meeh... but I'll go for an anbernic..they'll do it better" .. just for example... could be every company...it annoys me a lot, especially in this case, because i love that formfactor and would be happy to have an overall good product but i didn't found it yet since i also want to play nintendo 64 with it so it would need to have a stick but the miyoo's performance on n64 is bad as we have seen......all of them have their flaws and issues...
I respect these handheld CCs and the standards they set, it's good for this niche industry. Personally got both the a30 and rg28xx for exactly what they are (gba devices in a fun and convenient form factor at a price I don't mind dropping) but I'm glad creators are trying to set better standards for the handheld community -- makes for better product down the line :)
I was pretty surprised he didn't like the orange. I think it looks cool. I wonder if he doesn't like orange at all or if it's just the shade or something. I'm not sure about the white accents. It does have a dreamsicle vibe which is reasonable, but it makes it look a bit cheap (which I suppose it is).
Thanks for the awesome comprehensive review. I really like how you focus on the performance of these devices compared to other TH-camrs who just gloss over how true the games play and just talk about specs. Keep it up, love your channel.
There is an update for stock os! Got my rg28xx yesterday and downloaded the new version. Everything was fine from the first second. Aspect ratio, settings etc. Perfect gba machine for me :)
If I never found your channel I prolly would have never gotten into emulation! Because of you I’ve been obsessed with handheld consoles and emulation on my phone. It’s an extremely addictive hobby 😅
I just got the RG35XX H as my first ever retro handheld and almost had buyer's remorse when these were released. No regrets now. The custom Batocera firmware is solid and there's a fork coming out soon that's supposed to be a significant improvement over that. Emulating N64 and Dreamcast is actually pretty important to me, so I think the 35xxH is the best cheap thing available right now (got it on sale for under $50). If I could get the Miyoo A30 design, but it had good firmware (Onion would be ideal) AND could play N64 and Dreamcast relatively well for under like $70... that would be amazing. Probably not going to get anything like that happening for at least another year, so I'm happy with what I have for now.
Lol don’t get buyers remorse; they make a new one every other week. I had the same thing happen when I bought mine. They all do the same thing at the end of the day.
Uhh, you missed the good one (talking about it here anyway) the RG35XX-H, the horizontal format is more comfortable, has sticks and is more pocketable than the non-H versions.
@@iaebiahand it did emulate PSP better than N64. Just watch retro game corp video. The chip is, in paper, more powerful. The major problems are the CF badly executed and poor optimization for N64 and Dreamcast, PSP optimization seems to be better.
at this rate, the budget option is just buying a controller for the phone you already have in your pocket and is likely under 2 years old and can eat n64 for breakfast
Side note: my miyoo mini plus came in months ago with a broken speaker and their support team SUCKSSS. I never got a replacement and they stopped emailing me.
Man I was looking forward to both of these but I’m sad to say that barring some kind of major turnaround I’ll be picking up neither. Why are the controls on the 28XX so damn tiny? Why does the Miyoo have an analog stick despite the fact that it is not nearly powerful enough to run N64 or Dreamcast? I could go on obviously. The decisions these companies make are increasingly baffling. I never thought I’d say this but even Powkiddy is easily looking like the best emulation device manufacturer these days. What a time to be alive.
The joystick is a godsend for anyone who has Nintendo Thumb. It's the only way to play without causing further injury. It's also just way easier for some games, like doing Soul Steal or Wing Smash in SotN, or even playing Atari Adventure.
problem is, garlic OS the one installed in the RG35XX original is that it's outdated so guys if you are into emulation buy the RG353P or RG353PS because both have good firmware from the get go. let's hope anbernic actually reuses those firmwares on the RG353 devices once more for the next devices.
Yeah I use the 353M, and was never able to get ArkOS to work on it despite making a couple attempts. Fortunately, the packaged firmware is perfectly acceptable. Haven't had any problems with it.

Sonic Advance 3 is one of the best tests for GBA, the normal ending scene has an annoying vertical line on most popular emulators VBA, mGBA, gbarunner2. You know it's a tricky thing because the WiiU release doesn't have it, but if you inject the game on say, Sonic Advance 2? You will get the vertical line! So far I have the RG 28XX and really like it. Haven't received the A30 yet to compare. I wish they would do a version with 6 face buttons and hardware powerful enough for full speed Sega Saturn emulation.
I'm glad I don't have an Oled monitor because I watch and re-watch your videos religiously in the top left corner of my second monitor while I work and I'd definitely have burn in of your videos by now 😅

The Miyoo A30 has the same chip as a pre-existing miyoo/bittboy product, the PocketGo S30. Unfortunately the firmwares that existed for that don't work because too many of the other components are different (likely mostly due to the rotated screen which has been the biggest obstacle in getting otherwise compatible firmware from the 35xx to work on the 28xx)
4:54 except they are using an ancient and dirt cheap chipset from 10 years ago called the Allwinner A33. Has the same cores as a miyoo mini, just double the amount and a better gpu. But still, even 10 years ago, this wasn't a great chip.
The A30 is certainly better with a custom os named Spruce. All it does is simplify the os by getting rid of unnecessary options and optimizing all retroarch settings. Everything performs much better after installing.
I didnt hear any mention on PSP emulation for the Miyoo, did you do any testing by chance? Having the single analog stick seams like a good match up if it can run decent
I still have an Anbernic 35xx and it’s great! I agree though the firmware is pretty rough and Garlic OS is better. Retro game Corps has a great video on rg35xx with custom firmware. You’d think with all the money Anbernic is getting they would just invest right back into a good firmware instead of new handhelds.
The RA game tab is just short for RetroArch. Personally I like having the default Game Room and the RA tab. A lot of games work great with the Game Room right out of the box with basic emulation and trimmed back settings that for my purposes usually work. It’s a lot more user friendly for people who aren’t into tinkering and just want to play some Gameboy with simple save states and trimmed back options. RetroArch is a tinkerers emulator which is great but also makes a difficult situation for many casual gamers who don’t have the time or want to spend time researching how to get things to work. I have the RGX35XX-H and it’s fantastic. It’s my favorite emulation device and as far as handhelds it’s just one step down from my Nintendo Switch. Part of why I like these handhelds is simply the peace of mind of being able to revisit all my favorite Gamboy games but I also end up playing a ton of games I otherwise would never check out and it’s just a more enjoyable process than NSO. It’s thanks to your channel and a few others that I picked up the Anbernic 35XX-H and imo it’s a great go-to. It has PSP and DS emulation out of the box and also does N64 and Dreamcast I believe though I haven’t dabbled much into that.
Great video! The best horizontal option for under 100 bucks for me is the RG35XX H. It's not perfect, and I wish it ran Onion OS, but it CAN run N64 80% of the time with no issues, AND it can run dreamcast well half the time.
I hope the clamshell competition between the Anbernic whatever SP and the Miyoo Mini whatever Flip will be less messy than this one... A pocketable clamshell is what I would genuinely consider as a second emulation handheld (I have a Retroid Pocket 2S and I could not ask for more actually)
RG28XX will get muOS pretty soon and for those who dont like text based CFW, Knulli will also come rather soon (tho not as stable as muOS bc it's still in beta)
I'm fairly certain they don't have any software people at any of these emulator companies. And they DEFINITELY don't have anybody making marketing plans.
If Bob wants an Anbernic that has good Stock firmware, he should check out the Anbernic RG Arc. The stock Linux firmware on that is actually pretty good, with the only thing really missing being a scraper. Just make sure to update to the latest V12 firmware.
at this point getting the r36s seems like the no brainer choice. but i would still urge people to go for the miyoo mini or mini plus. they are significantly better in software and quality of life experiences (buttons, save states etc.).the best budget choice is still the og miyoo mini / plus there is yet to be a horizontal device equivalent to it imo.
As long as PSX runs well on this, I’m fine with that. Although, I could also just buy a RG35XX for cheaper too. (I think? I checked the prices and I saw both of these devices are much more expensive, unless I’m checking at the wrong places)
I got both. The A30 has some filters and shaders and stuff turned on by default which seriously impacts performance. Turning those off fixes any performance issues I've encountered. The 28xx is okay I just can't get used to the tiny buttons. It's not super comfortable for me for more than 15 minutes. Hardware wise I prefer the a30 to the 28xx except the d-pad. That's the only thing that I think is a little better on the 28xx.
I think the biggest issue for me is that I'm not a big public transportation user. I have very little opportunity to use something like this. I like the form factor, so I got one of those bluetooth controllers that goes around your phone. For the bit I use it, it's mostly just at home.
Picked up a 28xx over the a30 solely because it has no wifi or bt, meaning i can have it in the classified room at work, prefer the mechanics of the a30 but whatr you gonna do
Hell yeah! Used psp as handheld emulation device, and was great. Then had GPD XD, which was even greater but died, which forced me to look for an alternative and got the pocket Go while Covid and it arrived just one day later! I loved and still love my Pocket Go, it is certainly the most memorable retro handheld I had till this point, and still use it, and I bought multiple ones, and was a great gift idea. Honestly I am kind of sad they aren't doing anything. They certainly could re-release the pocket go, I would buy it again XD. Now if they upgraded some specs, they'd be a no contender. Super pocketable, super cheap, miyoo and anbernics are no contenders in this sense, even though I love those too. I own many retro handhelds by now, but the pocket go was very special to me, and I had a GPD XD before, which was nice, but not as memorable as the pocket go. Also, I personally love its screen.

i'll wait for onion OS
MuOS for the 28XX is supposed to come out in the next coming days
Love your videos
That's the only thing that I think is a little better on the 28xx.
thank you for all the PSVita videos.
Personally went with the RG28XX for my son... ended up keeping it 😅
1:21 my anxiety is kicking in!
The designs are quite nostalgic but shame the quality doesn't match the old hardware.
They aren't emulators, they're Linux handhelds...
People who buy multiples of these handhelds hate to use words correctly.
I think the biggest issue for me is that I'm not a big public transportation user. I have very little opportunity to use something like this. I like the form factor, so I got one of those bluetooth controllers that goes around your phone. For the bit I use it, it's mostly just at home.
I really like the form factor of the miyoo, but I am plenty pleased with my rg35xxh. More so after this review.
My favorite GBA style emulation device is by far the Switch Lite with CFW
Bob, make a review of the R36S! :)
FOR REAL I LOVE MINE IT ROCKS AND CAN SAVE $$$$
just picked one up on Ali for 38, it's awesome
