      The part at 3:40 - The worst word of 2022, definitely the word nuanced. I bet you have used that at least 1 time this year, and I bet you have heard it weekly all year long. People use it to sound smart, and overuse it daily.

    That Leica "look" probably comes from the lens. Low element count means microcontrast is higher, giving images more of a "3-D" look. This is in sharp contrast (no pun intended) to modern glass from Sony, Tamron, Sigma, etc. which have lots of elements and low microcontrast (but higher sharpness). This is the definition of the "leica-pop," "zeiss-pop," etc. terms that lots of photographers say - what they're really talking about is the microcontrast, which makes images more life-like. It's also why vintage lenses have a "look" - most of them are simpler designs with fewer elements.

      My first job straight out of college was with Leica, creating CAD drawings of their incredible lenses. This was pre-digital and in the early days of computer-aided design. Sadly, even with my staff discount, a Leica camera was beyond affordable on a $14k/year salary. I did snag myself a Leica slide projector that I own to this day.

The Sony RX1 series cams are half the price and even that seems ridiculous to me. If you want fixed focal length.... you can grab a Canon RP and a 35mm or even 16mm for 1/5th the price.... stick on that one lens and run around. When I was just starting out I used to bring my a6000 with a prime lens everywhere I went. As I got into doing more professional work, my gear got bigger and bigger. And I took them to less and less personal trips. This year I picked up the sony a7c for somewhat of a similar reason as you. Grabbed a prime 35mm that’s compact and Yeah. There’s definitely something inspiring about simplifying your setup.

    • @alexanderje8336

      I use it with an A7iii but that 35mm 1.8 prime is probably my most used lens, simply because of it's compact size. I almost always bring that combo with me in a small bag, love it.

      I've had that same experience... I had an NEX-7 that I took everywhere and eventually moved into larger bodies, ended up with a Sony a7R III and a kit of lenses, and then I was back into shooting landscapes again and bringing a tripod everywhere. Just this year, I am leaning more into black and white architectural and abstract stuff, sold the a7R III, I just shoot the Fuji X-T4 and vintage primes now. It's nice to have a kit that's so light.

    I jumped on the fixed 28 lifestyle about 2 years ago. I can never go back, it widened my perspective in every way.
    Once you get the hang of composing more, turning clutter into context, it makes storytelling so much more poignant.
    It's not far off a 24 in use, but just has a little less dramatic curving distortion.
    It does everything. Except maybe moonshots.

      I was looking at the Q2 which is a fantastic camera, but then discovered the incredible world of Fujifilm and more importantly the X-T4 and its wonderful selection of dials! For half the price of a Q2 I can have a beautifully tactile camera with a range of prime lenses. Fuji film simulations are another reason to choose them... After 25 years of Nikon, I've moved over to the Fuji side!

    • @aaron-bieber
      @aaron-bieber 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My go-to kit right now is the X-T4 and the Voigtlander Nokton Classic 40mm f/1.4 (about $400 new), which is a Leica M mount, so you need something like the Fotodiox Leica M to Fuji X adapter (about $50). Fixed focal length and manual everything is a completely different experience from today's typical "point and press the button" style.
      I'm currently awaiting my Canon FD to Fuji X adapter so I can shoot this vintage Canon FD 50mm f/1.4 (can be found on eBay for about $100).
      You can definitely have a new shooting experience without spending $6k.

      Those of us who began our photography as kids in the 1960s began with fixed lens cameras like Kodaks, and Halinas - bought for a few pocket-money pounds, and pushed them to their practical limits, home-processing the Kodak or Ilford film we pushed through them, and printing from the negs on Gnome enlargers in blacked-out boxrooms or bathrooms, with dishes sitting on hot water bottles, etc., etc. THAT was the way to learn photography. Everyone is SO spoilt now, with their multi-lens camera-phones - and interchangeable digital cameras. So, yes, the enforced discipline of working with a fixed lens camera is what we all did decades ago. Because as kids, we couldn't afford to do anything else. Good training for lifelong shooting..!

    • @RiposteThis
      @RiposteThis 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why does the Leica work for you more than the other companies? What does the Q2 do that the other companies don't? It can't be ergonomics because the Q2 is literally a rectangle with a lack of buttons to make doing things more efficient. The screen doesn't tilt, so it's more difficult and uncomfortable to get low or high shots. They went with a weird focal length that is not great for up close portraits, the 45mp sensor isn't any more or less sharper than other brands 40+ mp sensors.
      I'm legitimately wondering what makes the Q2, which is an $8500 Canadian camera worth that price even remotely. And please don't say "there is something about the Leica".

    Peter, lifetime photographer/cinematographer here. Usually having access to some of the best workhorse cameras to take on personal travel the most I ever spent on a camera I've owned was for a Sony A7 with several nice pieces of glass. I like Sony so much but they haven't done anything with ergonomics since they merged with Konica-Minolta. So now I'm going to set aside my various cropped format cameras and get a Q as my one and only just for trips/street stuff/fun. The Q2 is just as "good" as the Q but I like the upgrades. The Q3 is going too gimmicky, that trendy swingout screen is so not Leica in so many bad ways. The eye focus likewise is trendy and besides why own a Leica if you don't manual focus? So respect for your videos, you've helped me clinch my focus on getting a Q2 (probably used). I like your presentation style and enthusiasm, thanks for doing this (I know it's really hard work on top of making a living). Hey quick question - since the Q2 doesn't have audio input jacks is any of that ambient audio from the two little mics built into the body or is it 100% laid down in post?
