    Probably my favorite vr moment of all time was when on pavlov, on Hageru, I was hiding inside a house with my group mates, sniping germans, physically wracking the bolt back, yelling at my teammates telling them where the enemies were, watching my comrades get slowly murdered all around me. There were tears, there were laughs, and there were dead headsets. And like you said, when I think about this, I dont think "I saw everyone around me die and then shot everyone" I think "I physically dodges bullets, hid behind bullets, made connections with people, and pulled back bolts."

    I love your point about how memories in VR feel like you’re actually there.
    I think when you’re playing VR, obviously you’re always somewhat aware that you’re in VR. You can feel the headset on your head, your field of view is lower, you can feel controllers in your hands, etc. But when you revisit the memory, your mind kinda filters out the minute senses and focuses on the more straightforward things: sight and sound. So when you look back, it really just feels like you actually experienced it

      I love VR. It’s just a beyond amazing experience and just feels more in depth than 2D can ever do. I really hope it takes off and we get more impressive games, like a survival game and a stealth game similar to splinter cell and metal gear solid. I’d kill for that man

    I honestly love video essays, even when it's about stuff I already know about. It was nice to see what kind of thought process and the little things I hadn't picked up on that someone else did. Thanks for making suck a wonderful video about vr (I don't own a headset but I will soon since I got a good setup now), and I hope everything goes well for you.

    my favorite part of that new years in VRChat... was the servers crashing at exactly midnight, i was with a group of recently made friends, and we were all counting down, i was absolutely trashed drunk, and when i counted down to ONE, i closed my eyes and yelled HAPPY NEW YEAR... i opened my eyes... and got greeted to the steam VR VOID... i had never felt so alone... almost made my feel schizo

      Luck you. Bought mine used from a friend and after about 50 hours of use, the left controller is dead and the tether cable is degrading, so sparkly pixels and popping audio. Support told me neither is covered and it’s $129 for each. This has definitely left a sour taste in the quality control of the Index.

    I bought an exhaust fan for my Valve Index and it’s literally a game-changer! My initial thought was that it would be a cheap and low-quality product made by companies that wanted to make a quick buck. However, the huge amount of heat it actually manages to deflect is amazing. I can play high-intensity games like Lightsaber, Ragnarock, and Pavlov for so much longer without having to take a break and ruin the immersion because of sweating.
    Also my joystick got worn out and started drifting on my left controller after 15 months..I contacted support and they sent me a new one even though the insurance was no longer valid! . I love their customer support!

    • @SargonDragon
      @SargonDragon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The Index is still king despite its advanced age. That says a lot more about stagnation of the VR industry than anything else. Several VR headsets have released since the Index, but most of them aren't even intended to be in its class. They're cheaper, more accessible, mobile, whatever. But there's been very little focus on making VR headsets which actually provide a better VR experience.
      The advantages of the Index become even more substantial if you're big into VRChat where you can get into full body tracking.

    That Pavz story reminded me of when I was playing on Blood gulch and I was sneaking to red base through the caves on the side when I ran into an enemy who shot at me with his shotgun... and then realized that gun doesn't really work. I just stopped and talked about "yeah that gun is kinda glitchy right now, you have to basically break your arm to pump it." And a couple more guys from each of out teams just kinda wandered in and just joined the conversation. Then we eventually decided to take the party to the rest of the lobby. One of them started playing music through OVRtoolkit or something and we just ran into the middle of the map and started dancing and shooting into the air to the rhythm untill everyone joined in. We eventually had a mongoose race around the map which I barely won and as a prize got a free cap of the enemy flag. Still have a couple clips from that experience saved. Good times.

    I upgraded from spending 1000 hours in a quest 2, to having an index, four base stations, and full body tracking. I love this headset. It may not be a Paimax 4k, but its easily the best investment ive made in terms of enjoying VR a whole lot more. This headset is going to be main way I experience VR for the coming years and I don't see that changing any time soon.
    Great video. I'm glad TH-cam finally recommended me something I was actually interested in watching.

    Excellent video. My brother got us a quest 2 recently and I'm gonna take it slow for my next step in VR and thats with the vive cosmos elite kit then get the index controllers as a test to make sure for when I eventually get the index that it arrives etc. :)

    The ability to switch refreshrate, in combination with SteamVR's framerate limiter is such a useful feature to hit stable framerates for all kinds of scenarios.
    Its the only headset that can be locked to 30 40 45 48 60 72 80 90 120 144 framerates!

    I've been riding my quest for nearly two years now. It's gone from a cool gimic I strap to my face on its own when I'm not gaming on my pc, to a paper weight for a few solid months to something I strap on regularly connect to my pc and hookup up full body tracking and get lost in for hours . I love my quest but I know I'll need to upgrade to a proper pc headset soon perhaps not the index since it's a touch old by this point but something new will likely take its spot.

    I'm using the Quest 3 with Virtual Desktop. I think since I'm in an apartment, the inside out tracking works pretty well. The lenses and screens are similar to what I remember my Index being. If they make a wireless Index 2 with QC issues fixed I may look to that if the Quest 3 breaks.

    what keeps me from buying an index, is that its 4 years old and the price never adjusted. things like the good audio and the mic are no arguments for me, since iam sure, my headphones are better anyway and i wanna use those, since the floating design will have noise leak and my enviorment is never dead silent while my headphones are closed design.and yes sure, lighthouse still seems to be the best, and iam totaly willing to pay a thousand bucks, but when the quest3 headset is better in almost every way, besides fov, which isnt the top priority for me, and it comes with controllers and tracking thats 90% of what lighthouse would give me, i really feel that at least the index hmd itself, should be 250 bucks less nowadays. and since iam kinda sensetive to SDE and the index is notorious for that...and the second point: reports about durability of the controllers and baystations. sure i could have different experiences.. but hearing people they went through 5 controllers and 3 basestations ins 4 years is a lot of cost. sure, some maybe warranty replacements.. but after that?

    I've had an Index for 3.5 years and just paired it with a 13900K & 4090 and WOW! It never looked so good and for some Sim titles I can finally run full Ultra settings which I've never been able to do before. I've got a Reverb G2, but even for Sim titles I find I don't want to use it. The Index tracking is superb and for running room scale games it is absolutely the best thing out there still. The Index Controllers are excellent and the headset at 144fps is truly amazing. I also set it up once 3.5 years ago when I first got it and have never had to touch or recalibrate a thing. It is just perfect and extremely reliable. I won't go into the wonkiness I've run into with the G2, but it has numerous deal breakers even with a FrankenFOV facial interface and OpenXR tweaks.

    Nice video!
    I'm personally doing wireless PCVR over airlink with the refurbished Quest 2 I bought before they bumped up the price, alongside third party add-ons and stuff to use with it. I likely won't get an Index (despite some of the really nice features), but eventually I hope to somehow acquire a Deckard (you know, whenever that may possibly come out). Plz gimmie that valve-made wireless PCVR Index successor, Valve!

    I've been using the Index since I got it for Half-Life Alyx, and I am on my 4th pair of Knuckles Controllers. Every single time I got new controllers was because of thumbstick issues. It's a real shame too because when the knuckles work right, they work like a dream; better than any other VR controllers on the market. I just wish they would actually do something with quality control regarding the thumbsticks. They really need some work, and I hope it's fixed with the next generation of knuckles.

    I wish Valve would follow up the VR headset idea. My main complain is that pixel density doesn't seem to be high enough. I am still viewing a lot of screen-door effect. I wish they can have a next-gen headset that has totally unperceiveable screen-door (like some of those high resolution OLED headsets). Of course IPD detection and eye gesture sensing would be nice.

      I honestly doubt it will compete with the Quest. I think it will be wireless, and it will probably support some form of standalone, but I don’t think it will be the same price range. I don’t expect Valve to make a budget VR device anytime soon.

    • @fatguy9
      @fatguy9 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JeppeBeier I think itl probably compete with the Quest pro in pricing, im just imagining index and deck price combined which might not be that bad of a deal depending on performance

    I've got my first VR headset (the original Vive) in 2018 and since then I've always wanted to upgrade to the Index, but now I'm on a fence if I should wait for the next Valve headset that might or might not be coming this year. I'll probably just buy the Index headset alone as I already have the Vive tracking stations and the Index controllers.
