Roger, this was absolutely brilliant, it’s one of the most interesting and watchable videos I’ve seen in a long time - the content quality was superlative and it’s worthy of main stream TV any tine - brilliant.
Agreed, more Roger Bisby and less Michael Portillo please. Call the new series "Bisby Builds Britain", featuring many guides and advice as covered previously on here - and of course, the essential, "Rant of the Week".
I usually can’t be bothered to comment on TH-cam, but your recent walk about videos are genuinely cracking. Proper old school style documentaries, that are relaxing and interesting to watch, no need for flashy editing or ego based presenting. Keep up the good work mate- this is easily good enough to be on mainstream TV.
It's a very rare thing for me to place a comment on TH-cam but, I've seen a few of your videos now about London, and they are brilliant. You're a natural. Extremely interesting and informative. Can't wait for another installment. Thank you.
Brilliantly executed video, I knew quite a lot about London as my old drove skip wagons for about 55 years around London and he always gave me a guided tour, how accurate all of it was but nevertheless it was great hearing it from his theories, he emptied bins at Buckingham Palace and I had the privilege of going into the back entrance the the Bank of England one morning. On the boat disaster, my Aunt was supposed to be on that but due ill health she had to miss it thankfully, but the best thing was when i worked at a screen printing company, my boss always had new ideas for Christmas party locations, so firstly we went on a very palled steamer called the Dixie Queen, I wasn’t sure how I felt about being on the river and then more so after seeing the the paddle that was at the back had a lot on nylon robe holding it together, the we went on smaller party boats that went towards Tower Bridge and then turned around and back up to Plumstead then back a few times but the best was a party in the gantries on Tower Bridge, one was for music and chatting etc the other was a bar and food area, you can probably guess where I was. But lastly last year I had an operation at Guy’s and St Thomas hospital very near the Shard. My recovery was not quick but eventually I was discharged and had hospital transport home, being a east ender going over London bridge was a site for sore eyes as I was going to my side of the river and I got a great shot going over then posted it on FB and said I’m finally going home. Once again Rob, great job with this one. 👏 A last thing to add, I have only seen the old Oliver Twist film and not read the book, but in the film it was Bill Sykes who killed Nancy. As I said I have not read the book so could be mistaken.
Roger, you are the most interesting, articulate, authentic, and amusing narrator I have ever listened to. I would listen to anything you might discuss.
Roger, I only discovered your vids by chance, and have no previous interest in such things, but you have changed that and are now one of my favourite vloggers....total respect to you sir!!!!!
Terrific stuff ! with a great little camera man ! You paint a wider picture, along side the history, making it easier to retain.. I'll be here for the next one too.
I’m ashamed to say I clicked on this to see how boring it would be and ended up watching all the way through. It was brilliantly made and far more interesting than I expected. Some fascinating knowledge there. You would make a great tour guide 👍🏻👍🏻 My brother lives in London and I bet he doesn’t know half of this. Good stuff 🤝🏻🌉🛤️🏗️🏭
I live in south east London, our local river - the Ravensbourne runs into other local rivers including the Poole and the Quaggy and into The Creek at Deptford and so into the Thames...so though I have a little local knowledge, I have nowhere near as much fascinating information to hand as Roger here. I always find his videos about London, it's architecture, building practices, old Londoners, their work and life etc well worth watching and learning about our extensive capital city. Thanks Roger. 👍🙂🏴💜🇬🇧🤭🖖
Thanks for putting that together. I like the walk and talk format. More deep dives into older methods and builds, please. I'm sure a lot of us get enough of coping with the new stuff during working hours!
I thought I knew a lot about London! You have taken the subject to a whole new level. Your passion for the infrastructure that makes London one of the most historically and interesting cities in the world, is wonderful. Thank you for these videos.
This was super Roger, and your builder perspectives add great insights. Well paced, digestible information made even more palatable by your sense of humour. Magnus did an excellent job and has a future in the movie business :)
These types of videos are excellent, packed full of useful information and history and a talented young camera man aswell! Keep it up, would love to see more 👍
Yet another brillant video! I learnt a lot of interesting facts there Roger. Looking forward to the next one. The old Royal Doulton factory is an amazing building, tucked away, I found it by accident one day while walking along the Thames.
Magnes is such a lucky boy to spend the day with you. I really enjoy your content, always interesting, intelligent and curious. You need to be in front of an even bigger audience to inspire the young. Thank you.
Inspiring the young is a tricky business. There is a point in our lives where we know so much more that our elders and think they are fools. I am not sure what happens and when but I often wish I could meet my old teachers (now dead) and apologise. Yes there were people I met who put me on the right path and opened doors with their encouragement and they came from all walks of life. Again I would love to go back and tell them what a difference they made.
@SkillBuilder Yes, I feel the same way and often think about them. And the men like my father, who laid, built and dug, every brick, stone and tunnel that we take for granted. I did an night class years ago in plumbing. The teacher was an older man who took a shine to me and because of that kept the class going, even thought there was only two pupils. At the end of one class he called both of us over and said that there were tools missing and he didn't care which one of us took them, but we were to go into the tool room one at a time and whoever had the tools was to return them. Since i am not a thief, I was SO embarrassed and ashamed for the other guy, I picked up my bag and entered the tool room, made a noise as if I were replacing tools. The other guy then went in and after a few seconds said "they're here!" I can never forget the look of hurt and disdain that the plumber gave me. I still remember it and still wish I had the intelligence and gumption to tell that decent man that I wasn't a thief and didn't steal school property. I was young and gormless and not able to see the world as it was. Now I am older and just vaguely stupid, Take care and thanks for your content and sharing your knowledge.
Very enjoyable and informative Roger ,Well presented and Filmed Looking forward to many others The London River is enshrined in History all the way to the estuary
Fabulous stuff! Welcome to my manor! And there was some stuff there I didn't know. The river that comes out at St Saviours Dock is the river Neckinger, allegedly named after the noose they used to hang pirates, and St Saviour's dock saw some executions back in the day. If you want a good look at the underside of Tower Bridge go to Horsleydown steps on Shad Thames at low tide and you can get right down on the beach underneath there.
Loving these historical video's another one well done! Especially loved the remarks on Waterloo bridge of the dubbelglazing boys and cowardly reservedly redrawing your comments on that bridge hahaha
Fantastic, thank you. I’m from Lancashire and I love coming to London whenever I can (but I wouldn’t want to live there). Your videos teach me many things that I’m didn’t know before. Pointing out the reason for the expression on the Lion Brewery lion’s face was funny.
The quality of this video and whole channel is really impressive. That brick walkabout was amazing too. There is so much in London that is both modern and ancient. I'd love to know more about the industrial adaptation of technology into the London infrastructure. Like over the last 200 years. It was the first modern industrial mega city. How did they do it? Any lessons learned? Thanks for the great content.
Roger, this was absolutely brilliant, it’s one of the most interesting and watchable videos I’ve seen in a long time - the content quality was superlative and it’s worthy of main stream TV any tine - brilliant.
I am never sure about these videos so it is good to see your comment
Agreed, more Roger Bisby and less Michael Portillo please. Call the new series "Bisby Builds Britain", featuring many guides and advice as covered previously on here - and of course, the essential, "Rant of the Week".
The TV License fee would be easier to justify if a portion of it (say 1%) were paid to The Skill Builder channel.
Yes, this format is great!
Love what history you are revealing to us folks. Keep up the good work
I usually can’t be bothered to comment on TH-cam, but your recent walk about videos are genuinely cracking.
Proper old school style documentaries, that are relaxing and interesting to watch, no need for flashy editing or ego based presenting. Keep up the good work mate- this is easily good enough to be on mainstream TV.
Roger mate if no one has said it before, let me just say you're rapidly becoming the modern day Jack Hargreaves. Great video as usual!
Or Fred Dibnah.
Thank you. That was a fantastic insight into London's Bridges
Great. enjoyed it
Could listen to Roger all day. He’s got such a concise, factual approach. It’s wonderful.
does he know all this stuff off the top of his head? amazing!

I forget just how busy the capital is. Great bit of production from the lad and precise narration too!
I’m ashamed to say I clicked on this to see how boring it would be and ended up watching all the way through. It was brilliantly made and far more interesting than I expected.
