Not only is it untrue that the American tycoon "bought the wrong bridge", but he actively encouraged the untrue legend because he found it was increasing tourism around the bridge in its new place.

I'm Romanian, so not a native English speaker, and have never been to the UK. When I was in kindergarten and we'd sing "London Bridge Is Falling Down", I'd get really sad. I didn't want the bridge to fall, and no matter if we'd build it up with iron bars or needles and pins, nothing we'd do would work because it'd keep falling. It made very sad and worried for londoners. Didn't know back then that they had so many bridges. Made me worried for nothing. Damn londoners!
The song's actually based on a real life event - in 1014, a Viking called Olaf Haraldsson destroyed London bridge during an argument with the King Canute, who was the Viking king of England at that time.
I've been using Jay Foreman's "Unfinished London" videos in my English classes for foreign learners. It's perfect because it gives a bit of British culture, history and humour. I'm so glad that he has uploaded a new video. Thanks very much Jay Foreman and the "Unfinished London" team.
The thing that gets me about old london bridge was that it was dismantled only about 20 years before photography was invented. We were so close to having photographic documenation of it! Oh the sorrow!
Why did you randomly reply in Russian? Clearly you understood the comment you were replying to, as the Google Translation of your comment shows you were answering it. You also didn't bring up a topic of particular interest to Russian-speaking peoples, or one particularly taboo to English-speaking peoples. Do you simply enjoy not being understood by the majority of this channel's predominently English-speaking audience?
I worked round the corner from London Bridge in 1972 and 1973 and passed it every day - I watched as they removed and loaded each stone, carefully marked with numbers and letters, onto massive lorries to take away, probably to Tilbury, to be shipped abroad. I knew it had been sold as there was talk of it in Lloyd's (insurance) who would have covered this precious cargo, I presume. The fact that London Bridge was closed to traffic (obviously) caused considerable disruption and most traffic went over Tower Bridge but was extremely congested.
@@vigilantcosmicpenguin8721 I prefer to think that anyone who played, sung or whistled the tune was immediately thrown off the bridge and into the Thames.

The Old London Bridge with BUILDINGS ON IT (!!) is just the coolest thing ever. Can you imagine if we had actual photos and movies of life on the bridge at that time, and could experience it?? Awesome.

@@WaterShowsProd I heard they actually thought they were getting a different British actor that was more famous (and taller and pointier... with 2 towers...) to come to Arizona.
When I saw a bridge with buildings on it in person for the first time (Ponte Vecchio in Florence) I was so impressed that started trying to rebuild the bridge in Minecraft lol. I'm so sad that bridges like this aren't built anymore, they're incredibly cool and the concept honestly sounds so futuristic, even though it's thousands of years old.
I never imagined an arm quite that long, but now when I hear arm related phrases like "the long arm of the law" I will picture an arm like this. What an incredibly long arm.
7:26-8:02 the distance from London to Paris is 344 km, and Jay crossed it with his arm in 26 seconds. That means his arm travels at 344*3600/26 km/h ≈ 47,631 km/h, or 13,231 m/s. That’s 39 times as fast as the speed of sound. Jay’s arm is therefore the fastest manmade object on earth right now. Edit: I’m tired of people saying “what about the manhole cover” or other things that went faster, because those are all not on earth.
Although I suppose you could argue that what we see is a montage of the actual extension… in this case, I challenge you to calculate the amount of time said extension would take. Also… how much weight will he be taking at the shoulder? Surely the leverage forces will be exceptional…
It seems like everything Jay is doing on this channel is a lifelong project. And as it appears he doesn't age, this series will probably outlive us all.
The VPN-longest-arm thingy at the end qualifies for a Webby and an Oscar and every award there has ever been all on its own (including the beautifully written, played, sung and done „long arm song“). And the bit about bridges before that is very nice, too. Also: Make Jay the next host on any award show and I‘ll watch. Happiness!
I’m assuming the long-arm gag was a parody of that kid’s show about the guy with a very long penis. … I had forget the name, but Google to the rescue, the show is called “John Dillermand”
I’m Swedish but I just started googling the London Bridge because about 2 weeks ago, I randomly had a dream about being an eel fisher on the Thames, and commuting each day with my little wooden boat (elongated in it’s shape!)under the London Bridge, which had large stone valves in a light coloured stone. I knew nothing about the London Bridge or eel fishing up until now. Intriguing.
How is this possible. I kid you not, I decided to rewatch all the unfinished london episodes today, since i hadnt seen the videos for a while. Im not joking, i finished the last episode like an hour ago and suddenly you upload this video, continuing the series almost 2 years after the last episode. Timing couldnt have been better!
Jay and Mark, watching your videos takes me at least 5 times as long as the videos actually are. My 15-greats-grandfather, John Stockton, was one of 12 Aldermen who defended London Bridge in 1470 against Falconbridge, the bastard son of the Duke of Kent. It was part of the Wars of the Roses. The Duke of York was grateful for the help, and he knighted the Aldermen. Thus, Sir John Stockton, Mercer, became a knight and Lord Mayor in 1470. Immediately before Kent actually took London. Oops.
How interesting! It's a pity that the old old London Bridge (the one with houses and shops on it) has not been preserved: it could have become a historical landmark like Ponte Vecchio in Florence

There are still a couple of those existing throughout Europe. One very famous one being the Kraemerbruecke in Erfurt, Germany, which actually to this day has residential and commercial buildings on it. It's definitely worth a visit and very well maintained to this day.
I worked in a shop on Pultney Bridge in Bath for several years. The bit where my cash register was was a wooden extension hanging off the backside of the bridge. Freaked me out on my first day after which I never thought about it. If you didn't look out of the back window it was just a normal street with a road, pavements and lined on both sides with shops.
This video was a recommendation on my “for you” page. I clicked on it, thinking it might be somewhat interesting and now I am in love 😍👏 I binged the whole series and probably gonna rewatch them soon as well. I can’t get enough. THANK YOU VERY MUCH for creating this amazing content. ( + please never end this series!! )
It would have been interesting if you had mentioned the affects the old bridge had on the tides. The starlings on the bottom restricted the river so much that there could be a two meter water level difference on one side of the bridge from the other, which made it extremely treacherous to pass under and also caused the river to freeze during harsh winters.
I did originally write that into the script. The reason we ditched it is because it didn't really add the story of the bridge so without any jokes or really good imagery to make it stand out, it felt like it just slowed the video down.

I had wondered about the origin of that well known and often used idiom, "I've brought the wrong bridge by mistake." But I always thought it had something to do with Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
The 1831 bridge is 157 miles by road from my front door, and I've been there a few times. Like many Arizona residents, it seems to be enjoying its retirement in the sun. The mild dry climate and minimal traffic means it'll probably last just about forever.

Several years ago, myself and a group of colleagues walked along the Thames Path From Hampton Court to Erith. At the start we walked along the path and soon came to Kingston. As we were raising money for a charity associated with our company (a widely known Peri-Peri Chicken restaurant that rhymes with Mandos) i thought it might be a good idea to pay a visit to any restaurant on (or near) the route. Kingston restaurant was only a few minutes walk away so we decided to go and say hi. On the way we crossed the Hogsmill River over the Clattern Bridge. I did little research and discovered that the Clattern Bridge is purportedly the oldest bridge in London (built around 1175) and one of the oldest river crossings in the world. It is a fine bridge, still going strong after many, many, many, many, many years.

Technically not manmade but natural
Although I suppose you could argue that what we see is a montage of the actual extension… in this case, I challenge you to calculate the amount of time said extension would take. Also… how much weight will he be taking at the shoulder? Surely the leverage forces will be exceptional…

Oh wow. VERY obscure reference! 👏 👏 👏
Oops.
"defended London Bridge in 1470 against Falconbridge, the bastard son of the Duke of Kent"
I'll admit, I thought the post was a joke at this part
That is one hell of a story. You've got a historical drama protagonist as your ancestor.
Does that mean your a sir because of the legacy?
So are you not related to the NBA guy?
heyy my british ancestors also ended up on the wrong side of the war of roses. Apparently they were cool enough to only get exiled to the colonies.
How interesting! It's a pity that the old old London Bridge (the one with houses and shops on it) has not been preserved: it could have become a historical landmark like Ponte Vecchio in Florence

You'd have a field day with an insurance company trying to insure that.

1:23 Something's off about that reflection
It would have been interesting if you had mentioned the affects the old bridge had on the tides. The starlings on the bottom restricted the river so much that there could be a two meter water level difference on one side of the bridge from the other, which made it extremely treacherous to pass under and also caused the river to freeze during harsh winters.
I did originally write that into the script. The reason we ditched it is because it didn't really add the story of the bridge so without any jokes or really good imagery to make it stand out, it felt like it just slowed the video down.
It’s partly mentioned in one of the blink and you’ll miss it notes on the screen!
