Love the subtle inclusion of the cue mark at the top right corner of the video before the sponsor segment (8:05) - I also noticed it in the last video. I remember moving to the UK in the late 2000's where some television channels still used these cues to visually signal the live broadcaster to prep following adverts. Very subtle addition!!

OMG I have been watching Jay for years and never knew what that was/what is for and it bugged me sm cos no one else ever talked about it tysm!
The Tower of London is hardly gothic. It's in typical Norman style, so therefore romanesque. The bridge is in gothic revivalist style because that was sort of the 19th century romanticised view of medieval architecture. Rather than matching the style of the Tower, it's more of an idealised attempt at creating this (faux-)medieval milieu.
It could never be gothic. We all know Goths wear black and the Tower of London obviously doesn't 😅

I like the honesty for how beautiful Tower Bridge is. It's easy as a Brit to be snarky and downplay stuff, but Tower Bridge is legitimately something to be proud off.

The fact that Brooklyn Bridge is older than Tower Bridge was a real surprise to me. The architecture of Tower Bridge really creates the illusion that it was built in the 14th century or something! Fascinating for sure.

I LOVE this channel and I cannot wait to explore more of these brilliant videos, and I couldn't even give a toss about London as I live in Cambridgeshire.

I'm not a Brit, but I've been to London twice in my life, and since the first time I saw Tower Bridge when I was a kid, I fell in love with it. I don't remember why I liked it so much, but I thought, and I still think that it is a beautiful sight.

8:05 that little marker on the top right of the screen was used on British tv to signify a change of broadcast. Usually for regional adverts on commercial tv or near the end of a program on bbc as a cue for the announcer to start their voiceover.
You deserve a standing ovation for your techmoan parody. Well done!
I always watch Jay Foreman's videos 3 times: first time for all the interesting information and non-hidden jokes, a second time immediately after for all the hidden jokes (and make sure I got everything right, not a native speaker here), and a third time later because it's just too good.
I do similar. Once all the way through no pausing to not disrupt the flow. A second time to find and pause to enjoy all the details (like to read all the email titles). :)

I'm lucky enough to have been in the tower subway. You can only really get half way across now. Went down when I was making a TV show about London's bridges and tunnels. This is almost certainly far more entertaining than my show though. I also got to open tower bridge and stand in it's counterweight chambers when the bridge lifted (really quite frightening).
That is very cool (in a nerdy interesting sort of way). Would love to see that 🙂
@@pk3ndl3r took a lot of health and safety paperwork as I recall. Also had to coincide with some other maintenance work being done on the tower subway as we could not afford the man power to so all the safety precautions just for us. I probably didn't appreciate what a great show that was to write and film for at the time. The day we filmed up Big Ben I couldn't be bothered to go. I did however get to sit on Nelson's head in Trafalgar Square and stand on the roof of the new Heathrow airport control tower.

We have the same soggy clay in San Francisco, so when they needed to build a subway under the bay, they built a tunnel on land and sunk it underwater. I try not to think about it too much-for some reason it’s more unnerving than just a regular tunnel.
Paris metro tunnels under the Seine river were actually built using a similar technique.
Sydney Harbour tunnel is the same. Based on a Japanese tunnel if I remember correctly.

The Detroit Michigan - Windsor Ontario tunnel is the same kind of tunnel. Not bored under the bedrock, it's literally a tube sitting on the floor of the river. As long as they're manufactured right, they're no less safe than underground tunnels.

Bridges are fascinating for sure it'd be cool to have a new episode about the Tube someday, like you once did with the northern heights scheme :D. I believe there's a lot say, for instance, concerning all the Fleet/Jubilee line projects in the 1980s.

Oddly you say that - Jay Foreman was actually hired by the BBC for a bit, but he wasn't given as much creative freedom as in his videos and it kinda hurt the final product.

I have to watch these at least three times: first, to get the basic information; second, to make sure I catch all the jokes (including the written ones - e.g., 3:53-3:57 - TRAMPOLINES?!?); third, to appreciate the brilliant editing. There are more reasons, of course, but I just thought three was an easy number to remember, in case it comes up in conversation.
As a certified utility pipe, I am glad I still have access to the closed tunnel.

Sorry, as a Middlesbrough local, I have to be a pedant:
The Transporter Bridge does not lift vehicles/people upwards. It carries them across at road level on a gondola.
We also have(/had) a bridge, the Newport Bridge, that lifted its middle section straight upwards to let boats through. It's very cool.
Kinda glad the southerners didnt build it to be honest. This way the transporter bridge is the largest functioning one in the world.

I remember there being an episode of Blue Peter at the time that the London Eye was being built where one of the presenters accompanied a pod being brought up the river on a barge. He was disappointed that Tower Bridge didn't need to open to let them through, but as the Eye was being built next to Westminster Bridge, the barge carrying the pod would've needed to fit under all the bridges downstream of there, so if it had been too big to pass under Tower Bridge without it having to open then it wouldn't have been able to pass under the bridges between it and Westminster either!

I actually thought up until this video that London bridge had the appearance that tower bridge does. I’m glad to know the difference, and I find your videos very entertaining! I am actually first generation American, with my grandparents having been from England and my mother. they had moved here to the US in 1961. It is such a shame that my mother never took us to visit! She used to visit every summer growing up, but no visits for me and my siblings. I am determined to go someday. I could go right now but I wouldn’t be able to spend the amount of time I want, so it will have to wait.

3:29 this my favourite sight gag in a while, and I got thinking about how you might have done it. it looks like Jay and the left side of the background slow down to make the sound desync, but then the seagull on the right side as well as the people walking up top don't slow down, so you must've stitched two background shots to make it work? But even then I can't find a seam or jump cut that gives it away. I've been slowly learning video editing over the past few months but haven't messed with filming my own footage yet so this really blew my mind.
oh god I think I found one of the seams: theres another seagull to the right of the close one but behind the boat that looks like it disappears at the corner of the bridge support right at the start of the shot

For the trick to work, you don’t need to edit the visuals at all, only the audio.
HOWEVER…..
I wasn’t happy with the timing of the joke, so I *DID* have to do some trickery so that I could do some time-remapping on my performance without disturbing the background. There are three elements stitched together. 1. Me, 2. the people on the bridge (easy), and 3. that stupid bloody bird!!
So, well done for looking in the right places, but the only thing in that clip that has been slowed down is me.
I love jay foreman. History, but its actually funny and entertaining to watch. He can get you extremely intruiged into a video about a damn bridge for 8 minutes.

From 2001 to about 2011 i used to visit London quite regularly and frequented a night club near London Bridge and often stayed in hotels close to the Tower, quite often I had to wait for the bridge to lower the roadway on my way back in the early hours of a Sunday morning as there would be pleasure boats on the river who were too tall to go under the bridge
