  • In this video I show you how to use a vag-com and VCDS to check the timing chain stretch on a 2.0T Audi. This car is a 2013 Audi A5.
    Written:
    1. Warm up engine and leave it running
    2. Connect & open vcds
    3. Choose select control module
    4. Choose the Engine module
    5. Give it a second to load and select Advanced Meas. (measuring) Values
    6. A window will popup to search for values. Search for "Camshaft".
    7. Check the box for any that say Camshaft Adaptation
    8. In the main window look for "Camshaft Adaptation Intake Bank:1 Phase"
    9. The value of this will tell you how stretched it is. Use this guide:
    0 - 3 degrees = OK
3-5 degrees = schedule to replace chain at your convenience
5+ degrees = high risk of failure, replace timing chain soon
I suggest replacing at 4 or higher for sure. A failed timing chain on these engines can result in severe damage that will usually require a new engine or very expensive rebuild. Not worth risking.

I just did this test on my MK7 GTI with over 150k miles. My value showed 0.3°. It wasn’t even negative. So I’m assuming my timing chain is in very good condition still am I correct?

My scanner shows around 6.25 and I just did a timing chain trying to rid of p0016. Matched all link colors with the correct marks and everything lines up perfect. Still get p0016. Checked several different times. No fix. With the adaptation being above 6 does it mean the timing is still off somehow??

Something definitely off still. The chain could be properly aligned but elsewhere is causing the problem. Like if the guides weren’t replaced, tensioner is bad or not reset properly, a gear is slightly off somehow or even the sensor is bad.
I’d double check everything beyond just the marks is good

what if I want to check the 3.0 tfsi? should these values be the same?
More than 5 is already an exchange ?

If you have this same measuring value I think it would be around the same. But I don't know that the 3.0Ts show this value, I think most if not all do not have the ability to do this

Should I worry about timing chain stretch on a MK7 golf I’ve heard the engine changed and it isn’t a big deal really

    • @apocsgarage
      @apocsgarage  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Not really something to worry about until 120k - 140k miles since the last timing chain

    my 2014 audi a6 with 90k miles is showing -5.3 to -5.9
I guess my chain should be replaced
