  • democracynow.org - Cuba has begun nine days of mourning following the death of revolutionary leader and former President Fidel Castro, who died Friday at the age of 90. In Havana, tens of thousands of people lined up to pay their respects to Castro, who launched the Cuban revolution to oust the U.S.-backed Cuban dictator, Fulgencio Batista, and went on to lead Cuba for nearly a half-century. On Monday night, Democracy Now!’s Amy Goodman sat down with Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders for an interview in front of a live audience at the Free Library of Philadelphia, where he spoke about the life and legacy of the revolutionary leader Fidel Castro.

    I have to say that it is really refreshing seeing a US politician speaking so openly and candidly about the true American history. The rest of the world knows it, especially those directly affected, but all you get from a standard cut out of American politician is the usual "we're the greatest!". I know Bernie and his politics but I'm surprised evn him doesn't have any problem with speaking about the actual history of US international relations.

    I am happy that Sanders defends Cuba o the extent that he does, but it is important to push back against the defensive othering that Sanders is forced to do regarding Cuba. It is disingenuous to criticize Cuba’s economy when the U.S. has been dedicated to destroying that economy for 60 years. Every success Cuba has had - in providing universal quality healthcare, eliminating mother to child HIV transmission (the first in the world), providing education to 100% of their population, and in eliminating severe malnutrition- has been done in the context of the most powerful country in the world trying to destroy the Cuban revolution. Cuba has estimated that due to the extraterritorial nature of the U.S. blockade it has cost the country almost one trillion dollars in damages. Sanders tepid defense is far better than that of any other candidate (by light years) and a more bold stance could cost him too much. Therefore, it is up to us to speak the truth about Cuba and not give the day to mendacious anti-communist hysteria.

    • @mandinka323
      @mandinka323 4 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      Shotround that is factually incorrect. Everything is covered by the government. Cuba has the most universalized health care system and smallest percentage of out of pocket spending around the world. Check out the World Health Organization’s information on Cuba. I did my Master’s thesis on Cuba’s medical collaboration with Ghana and a third of my doctoral dissertation was about Cuba’s health care system. So, I regret to inform you that you have been misinformed.

Or the former Soviet Union invading Lituania, Estonia, Latvia, Finland and Poland, the latter in an agreement with the NAZIS. How the Ruskies invaded Afghanistan in 1979, or pushed Egipt and Syria to attack Israel in 1973. Cuba survived the collapse of the Soviet Union and an embargo by the US by implementing a sweeping program of sustainable agriculture. They were denied help from the US and went to permaculture experts in Australia for help. The result was that in 20 years Cuba created a system that recovered and restored DEPLETED farm land and productivity on a massive scale to feed itself and employ thousands. We need to look at how Cuba did it without imported fossil fuels and fertilizers or chemicals, international bank loans, industrial machines and corporate export agriculture. We live in a country that is exporting and simultaneously outsourcing our food production. We need to know how we'll feed ourselves when that system collapses.

      @@mf1116 Trump's strength is only facade put up by Trump to appeal to his base. The truth is he has floundered on the worldwide stage in China, with his tariffs on China actually detrimentaly affecting the United State's economy much more than the Chinese economy, and they've been able to double down on their genocide against the Uighurs and their pushing of boundaries in the South China Sea. And do ever notice how he doesn't bring up the Wall anymore? It's because it was a complete and utter failure. It fails to keep cartels from the US whilst keeping families seperated. It was useless in the first place because there's more immigration to Mexico from the United States than the other way round, and the vast majority of immigrants arrive in the US legally and simply outstay their visas. In almost everything he touched on in his 2016 campaign, he failed badly, but sadly, Trump is a master of the media, and managed to pivot focus from his tonnes of obvious failures to things that still give him appeal as a strongman to his base, who's values and wants from a presidential candidate are eerily reminiscent to those of Fascists in the 1930's (strong leader with enough power to change things untested, nationalism, strong military and police, harsh punishments, especially on outsiders, etc;) things which you can observe in the UK as well with "grooming gangs," a myth created by the tories and the media, and fears of violent immigrants migrating from Pakistan and around that area, a threat which is massively overexagerated. Don't believe anyone that says Trump is a strong leader, he's just a failure who managed to exploit the fears and desires of a backwards and xenophobic American public, who's Fascistic tendencies remained underneath the surface until a candidate, Trump, appealed to those tendencies; a price for which they payed for without even realising it.

Sure they had universal healthcare, but the healthcare is so bad that doctors are payed less then newspaper boys and often people who come in with injuries have to fix it themselves with the gauze and materials available. Only thing positive that I know out of the medical field in Cuba is the lung cancer "cure". That's probably due to Castro making that the countries priority though. Praising a dictator it is very scary. In Cuba people has no rights. Meaning they cannot speak against their leaders, no one is allow to be rich, only Castro family. Not allow to eat good foods, not allow to get good medical care, not allow to get medications, not allow to retire when they wanted to. And they all received equal pay $20 dollars a month working all day without stopping. The Castro family decide when they retire with $8 dollars a month. And if they wanted to leave they will get arrested sentence to death by starvation. Oh yea universal everything works for everyone.... right Bernie?

      Did you hear praise ?? Not in THIS video clip ! And while it is true that Cuba is not doing well - human rights, freedom and the economy - No one bats an eye about the other dictatorships with which the U.S. is so friendly. I would take Cuba over Saudia Arabia, Quatar, Bahraiin every day. - Or try dissenting in Jordan. or Israel if you are on the wrong side of the fence. And they increasingly suppress the democratic dissent even from people who do have citizens rights.
      Try dissenting in Mexico - you will get shot, no one knows if the government or organized crime is behind it. Either way people are not safe, not free and do not prosper.
      And do not get me started on the assassinations by hired "security" aka mercenaries aka thugs - killing and intimidating indeginous leaders, union and other activists in Latin America - if they stand in the way of Big Biz - for instance mining companies (U.S., also Canadian). Same happens in Asia btw.

    Comrade Castro was the most important revolutionary in the world in his time. He destroyed all the assasinations and the coups of world imperialism on his rising revolution. He was the path for many revolutionaries and revolutions for independence and liberty for the domination of US imperialism and Zionism. US imperialism hated him because they could not beat him. He stablished better healthcare system and education that the capitalist system. If Cuba was not under seige the country could reach a better development than many country in the world. US imperialism has continuting all sanctions and seige of Cuba because US politicians know that Cuba may change the USA into alternative system to monopoly capitalism. Finally, Comrade Casto lived and died with dignity and honestry better than many presidents in the world. What Comrade Castro left after his death is the pain for world imperialism when it is thinking to occupy a small country because small countries can form small fighting units to destroy a very strong army and Castro's model has been using in the world to give US imperialism all the defeats.

      Brazil and Mexico have some of the best economies in the world, yet half their population lives in poverty. Cuba is a poor country for GDP standards and yet there is no hunger, no one can say that they father/mother died of a silly disease because they didn't have money to pay for medical bills, no one can say that they didn't become an engineer because their parents couldn't afford college tuition. And there are also other standards such a retirement age as well, anybody want to take a guess what the retirement age in Cuba is?
      "Age 65 (men) and age 60 (women) with 30 years of work; age 60 (men) and age 55 (women) if 75% of all work or the 15 years immediately before retirement was in arduous or dangerous work."

The problem is he never mentions how China invaded Tibet in 1959, or Viet Nam after the USA lost over there, or how China presses everybody not to recognize Taiwan as a free nation, or how China went to war against India more than 3 times from 1950 to 1980. Or the former Soviet Union invading Lituania, Estonia, Latvia, Finland and Poland, the latter in an agreement with the NAZIS. How the Ruskies invaded Afghanistan in 1979, or pushed Egipt and Syria to attack Israel in 1973. And he NEVER mentions Fidel Castro´s invading South America with gorillas forces, and Angola and Etipia with regular forces serving Russian imperialism.

    Holy crap I'm in utter shock. Cuba is one of the worst places in the world because of Che and Castro. The US embargo happened because these two dictators were communist devils. Bernie went to Cuba 2-3 times and obviously didn't talk to the damn people. Why do you all think Cubans have been leaving Cuba literally in rowboats to get to Miami for generations? My Cuban friends have suffered beyond belief at the hands of Castro. The economy is in "pretty bad shape"? You don't "do very well" if you dissent? When I was in Cuba last year, all I could eat was rice and beans. Their 5 star hotels weren't even comparable to a 1 star hotel in the US. The biggest mall in Cuba is the size of a small park. I won't get into dissent. Children in schools are forced to pray to Castro every day in classes as if he were God. Castro was absolutely horrible, no better than Che Guevara, and all of you who support Bernie and his thoughts on Cuba need to come to Miami and talk to some first generation Cuban immigrants, because trust me you don't want to go to Cuba. "Everyone has free health care", yeah and LITERALLY everyone lives in abject poverty.

  • @nandy9285

    I love Bernie, but too many times have I heard people attempt to talk good about Castro by talking bad about the US. I think it's laughable that so many people support the status quo of Cuba while happily reaping the benefits of Capitalism; benefits that Cubans either can't have or are limited in.

    • @RottingintheMidwest
      @RottingintheMidwest 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The Cuban economy would be better if not for the trade embargo coming from Cuba's capitalist neighbor to the north. They can't have some of the benefits Americans have because the United States government won't allow it. Of course, undoing this wouldn't make the island country perfect, nor would it clear the Castro regime of all wrong-doing, but it would help. Also, make note that acknowledging the good things in Cuba isn't the same as supporting the political status quo.

    • @nandy9285
      @nandy9285 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't see how I proved you point. It isn't possible to speak honestly and accurately about Cuba/US relations without acknowledging the negative effects US policy has on Cuba.

    • @nandy9285
      @nandy9285 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know, but I was talking about Castro in my initial comment. Not Cuba/US relations. My issue was that whenever someone criticizes Castro, there's always an opposition ready to bring the US in the mix to defend. While the US has influence in Cuba's current situation, it does not excuse Castro's actions which everyone seems so eager to defend.
