The Secret History of How Cuba Helped End Apartheid in South Africa

  • www.democracynow.org - As the world focuses on Tuesday's historic handshake between President Obama and Cuban President Raúl Castro, we look back at the pivotal role Cuba played in ending apartheid and why Castro was one of only five world leaders invited to speak at Nelson Mandela's memorial. In the words of Mandela, the Cuban "destroyed the myth of the invincibility of the white oppressor ... [and] inspired the fighting masses of South Africa." Historian Piero Gleijeses argues that it was Cuba's victory in Angola in 1988 that forced Pretoria to set Namibia free and helped break the back of apartheid South Africa. We speak to Gleijeses about his new book, "Visions of Freedom: Havana, Washington, Pretoria, and the Struggle for Southern Africa, 1976-1991," and play archival footage of Mandela meeting Fidel Castro in Cuba.

Cuba only helped to weaken South Africa economicly so that Illuminati could take it over. The Illuminati loves Communism for its stregnth to disrupt stable countries, so that money and the corruption can rule. Racial propaganda is always used to stirr each one against each other but the reality is that whites fought alongside black in the Angolan war to halt the advance of communism in Africa, which had already killed 100's of 1000 nds of people in other countries. What people dont understand about white south africans is that we are born here, we live here and we want a safe country just as blacks do. Cuba probable helped to weaken SA economicly because the Angolan war cost SA R5mil's a day, but today SA in many way is not better of. Rampent rape, murder, therf, hi-jackings was not seen during apartheid. Themedia only shows you what it wants you to see because it belongs to the money powers. It is time people start opening up their eyes.

@Joe Moer sigh, well thanks for wasting my time, if you wanted to be called a moron you could've just asked, nothing about or during "Operation Savannah" consisted of Cubans stealing resources, they were there to help the MPLA fight the SA army, Cuban military intervention was in direct calls of assistance to fight South Africa after they invaded Angola. Back to the "rape" you falsely talk about, do you mean they stopped SA from putting in a pro west puppet so that the US could steal Angola's resources? Your claim that you were there is laughable, also why only just now create a TH-cam account, seems odd.

I am very impressed of Professor Piero Gleijeses's profound knowledge about Cuba and its involvement in Angolan independent struggle and South African liberation from Apartheid. Cuba not only helped in warfare but educated professionally so many countries from Africa in its own schools and Universities in Cuba, sent Cuban doctors, medical professionals, engineers etc. to provide free service called "Internationalism" . In 2005 Cuba opened "International medical school" in Havana and the first group to receive free education were poor America Citizens among other Latina- Americans, Africans, Caribbeans etc. Mandela admitted that Cuba helped materially to the apartheid struggle while other countries including America supported "in rhetoric". I don't know why the hand shake should be a problem for anti-Castro Cuban-American Ileana Rose-Lehtinen? it shows their ignorance and morally and politically incorrect attitude who made money by accusing Castro for half a Century. Today both countries (Cuba and America) has reopened a new chapter of relationship which might frustrates Ileana Rose-Lehtinen and her allies.

***** the so called civilized folks started this, why did they leave Europe TO GO TO AFRICA... THEN JUST CLAIM FOLKS LAND? THEY LIVE OF THE WEALTH OF AFRICA WHILE THE PEOPLE HAVE TO LIVE IN POLICE CONTROL SLUMS And that's b.s .
Why'd you need guns when you already have a paid army to do your protecting.
those people don't make guns. the so called civilized do and their guns are bigger.
what would you do if someone came to America or England and started oppressing an killing your people by the millions for centuries, just to claim your land..?
would you give up just because they're greater in power & got more allies. ?
would u be cool with living as a 2nd-3rd CITIZEN IN YOUR OWN CITY..?
HOW COME WHAT THE SO CALLED CIVILIZED WOULDN'T STAND FOR.
IS ACCEPTABLE FROM THE PEOPLE YOU'RE WILLING TO TAKE IT FROM.
HOW COME WHEN BLACK AFRICAN RULED SPAIN FOR 800 YRS THEY MADE SPAIN BETTER OFF NOT WORST. ? AND WHEN THE SPANISH DEMANDED THEY LANDS BACK IT WAS GIVEN BACK ..?
WITHOUT GENOCIDE OR BRUTAL OPPRESSION OF THE SPANISH PEOPLES.?
I Guest if we all saw each other as savages.
we'd understand each other better. ? Funny the invaders who has won a war they started for another peoples land.
called them savages as they keep them busy with daily oppression.
while they live of the fat of the peoples lands in wealth & comfort behind heavily guarded walls..
while sending out their armies / polices daily to make sure that the Natives don't think of fighting back....
i see the issues is learning to think like the so called civilized folks.
Kill brutalized steal what ever you want.
and when you've killed so much that people dare not even of doing you the same.
THEN YOU GET TO CALL THEM SAVAGES,
AND YOU GET TO CALL YOURSELVES CIVILIZED ... that's how it works..? doesn't.
you can have morals after the killing & stealing is done, just as long as you never think of giving back what you stole or being so moral that you stop oppress the people you came to kill steal & brutally oppress.
be to civilized is to do what you want to the enemies you seek out.
then call them savages if they don't forgive & accept your rule over them...
how dare these people keep fighting back for whats theirs ?
No wonder they asians wouldn't let you have any power amongst them... they know you civilized intentions.
these savages didn't seek you out, these savages hasn't annihilated whole race & species of animals that has existed for thousands of years, in the last 100- 400 yrs.
these savages has live amount thousands of different tribes of people, for thousands of yrs witout annihilated each other.
these savages hasn't mastered war & it's making, because they never had no reason to..? so these savages fail at the making of war. because they haven't mastered it .
but the so-called CIVILIZED FOLKS HAS MASTERED THE MAKING OF WARS. AND IS PROUD OF THEIR ABILITY TO DO SO.
THE SAVAGES ARE SAVAGES BECAUSE THEY HAVEN'T ACCEPTED THE REALITIES OF CONSTANT WAR MAKING . maybe they'll learn.
maybe they'll learn to claim to be making peace while giving the other side chicken pox blankets... maybe they'd learn to poison the enemy's water & lands.
maybe they learn to accept the concepts that the enemy must die in the most gruesome of ways, even the enemy's babies.
maybe but not likely they had 40thousand yrs of minimal wars, those new concepts is only 2000 yrs old in their existence.
these savages has had to live with more fear of a tiger than each other for 40.000 yrs,
they ideas of raping & murdering another people on every level is new to the so called savages minds. the savage thinks that after a war comes peace.
they don't get that to be civilized, you have to be in constant war with the other.
and even if the other gives up , that you must keep them from ever having the free/peace time to think of EVER fighting back, THAT YOU MUST KEEP LOOKING FOR NEW WAYS TO FRUSTRATE THE OTHER SIDE PEACE OF MIND. .
TILL IT DRIVES THEM INSANE WITH HELPLESSNESS .
THE SO CALLED SAVAGE MUST LEARN, TO BE AS BRUTAL AS THE CIVILIZED FOLKS. THEY MUST ALWAYS BE INVENTING NEW WAYS TO KILL, THEY MUST BE CONSTANTLY CREATING DISEASES & WEAPONS TO KILL WITH.
AH, WHEN WILL THE SAVAGES CATCH UP & BECOME CIVILIZED..? WHEN?
MOST LIKELY NEVER. THAT ISN'T THE SO-CALLED SAVAGE MINDSET.
JUST THE INSANELY GREEDY OR PARASITICAL ....

Also interesting to note, that free and formally enslaved African Cubans lead the charge in their revolt against the spanish for their independance, many of the generals in the victorious rebel armies were African in Origin, this is why Cuba did not forget its roots, they have attended to their brothers desperate state because they fought together hand in hand to defeat their colonial masters, its just lovely to see a country with integrity today.. unlike some countries in Hispaniola that forget who helped them rid them of their colonial ,the spanish. " When human beings can look at skin color as nothing more important than eye color, only then than man can say he has has integrity, until then mankind is a perversion of Humanity" - Bob Marley. Canada supports Cuba and always will.
There is still much to do but In this hemisphere Cuba is indeed at the leading edge of true humanitarian support unlike Usa that milks this lie to invade soverign countries and gain resource extraction advantages as well as propping up dictatorships. If Canada can oust Harper and somehow regain its humanitarian image in the world, which isnt to hard to do since we arent so deep in a ideological and militaristic hole as the Americans, then i can see a world where Canada and Cuba lead the way in supporting underdevolopped countries and diplomatically solving militaristic issues, this is what i hope to happen and not the downward spiral into the devils cabin that we are engaged in.

+EPGAH America was built by erasing indigenous cultures from their habitats. It's working force constituted of slaves, taken from their homelands and molded into one people. This is the situation the constitution is founded in. Until the 1900s they continued to expand their reign inside their continent. After that they went on to the rest of the world.
Lincoln said, that he only was against slavery as result of his interest in unifying the country, if the way to do it would have been to reserve the system of slavery, he would have done it as well.
They revolutionized in the 1770s as a reaction to a form of taxing that as far as I know is either already in place by american government or in discussion.
America invaded many countries leaving devastating trails of destruction behind (Panama, Iraq, Afghanistan, Guatemala, Vietnam,...)
Actually the government also took Marthin Luther Kings FBI protection away after he startet opposing Americas nonstop warfare. Both he and the president knew that this would lead to his death as he was under constant threats.
Yes, I'm an european and thankful for the fact that the States intervened to end Nazi Germany. But how does this legitimate the existing 179 US bases in germany alone today? Nuclear Weapons positioned there? Or the american interests woven into the new post-war german constitution? Or i.e. the reason why they concluded in creating an israeli state is highly motivated by having a present ally and a form of territorial power in the middle east they otherwise wouldn't have.
I'm sorry, but many things we grew up with are myths. Lies, propaganda, evoked by a few who desire to inherit power and build upon by the many who uncounsciously, unknowingly or recklessly ignorant parttake in the distorted reality they make themselves believe to be true.
So what exactly are the things western civilizations "used" to stand for? The "values" they speak of and the motives and heroes and their trails in history are myths. Castles built in sand.
Just read "Trust Me, I'm Lying" by Ryan Holiday for insights on how immensely easily it is today to manipulate the media landscape. Or "Confesssions of an Economic Hitman" by John Perkins as a starter on how the states are recklessly working towards global empire.
Or watch "The Empire Files" with Abby Martin on youtube, you'll find a lot of stuff I mentioned over there.
Sorry for the long comment, obviously I need an additional output :D

"The Cubans intervened in response to the South African invasion, and anglo america connived with the South Africans and urged the South Africans to invade. So here there is a rather important issue of chronology."
"Cuba is the only country in the world that sent its soldiers to confront the army of apartheid".

It is simply untrue that there are more Cubans in Florida than in Cuba. There are 11 million people in Cuba. The United has an estimated Cuban population of 1,785,547 of which 70 percent live in Florida.

I just wish that everyone got along especially the leaders of the world. I think it needs to start with leaders...😕 and if they disagree they should battle it out on a boxing fight one on one like true leaders instead sending others 😊 I bet you they would have to get along for the sake of their own lives 😬

I agree. Over hundreds and thousands of years rulers have always found enjoyment in conflicts. They find this enjoyment because they are not the one fighting or losing their lives. It's like the army is their toy, they don't realize the risk and true loss in war. We hardly ever have "real" rulers in history.

Castro and Che thumbed their noses at the U.S. to show that they were yet one more participant in the Imperialization of the world. And it is no small contrast that Regan fought against both leaders in their struggle to free themselves.

Cuba's done amazingly in spite of the living hell it's been through. It still feeds its people, it still gives healthcare to its people and it educates them for free. All the things the US has never done, despite it being the largest economy the world has ever seen.

Cuba in fact played an important role to stabilize Angola after the Portuguese were forced to abandon their colony.
"...Cubans worked in construction, education, agriculture or transport, and some were directly involved in developing the political structures of the MPLA, such as the children's and women's organisations. They performed a critical role in keeping Angola going after hundreds of thousands of Portuguese bureaucrats and technicians fled to Lisbon as independence loomed. From November 1975 to December 1977, 3,500 Cuban civilians went to Angola. Over the next twelve years that number would rise to 50,000. ..." - Lara Pawson "A Cuba connection", (pp.236-37) as quoted by Paul Trewhela.
But Cuban military interventions deliberately tipped the scales in the ensuing civil war in the favor of the MPLA.
Was that morally acceptable to democrats in the rest of the world and if so why?
And I wonder why there is no reference in this video presentation to Cuban involvement in the "Nitista massacre in and around Luanda in Angola on 27 May 1977, when as many as 25,000 urban people - mainly, but not exclusively, poor black township dwellers - are reported to have been murdered en masse by the ruling MPLA party, assisted by Cuban military and security forces."
More balanced reporting and less deceit, lies, obfuscations and disinformation are required before the world will be able to fully understand what actually transpired in Angola.

It is hard to look at a single action without considering what actions and reactions led to it. People always have a reason to do what they do and normally it is to serve their own purposes so they can get something out of it. Whether it was for civil rights or not I don't know what Castro had in his mind or heart that led to destroying a destructive regime. The thing to take away from all of this is how you choose to live comes back to you in some way.
