good point. The media and their coverage of the far right lunatic fringe blew up the balloon thing to the point it was almost an international crisis. (no pun intended) How many times did the media point out that we're seeing these balloons now because we're just now looking for them?... almost zilch. It was for the most part a nothing-burger, and should have been reported low key if our media actually cared about this country in which they operate.

Margaret's dig at the end about the question she asked was revealing. He said he's conducted 1000s of interviews and no one ever asked him about the core issues that could actually affect change. She had to get in her jab about "I asked all the questions I wanted. Not necessarily the questions you wanted." Margaret, that's kind of the point: none of the journalists over all the long decades have ever wanted to ask those questions. I'd say that's a strong condemnation of the current state of the profession.

Exactly Margaret. Thank you for proving Bernie’s point. People can see those were of course your go to questions for him. We know exactly where you and your bosses stand. Folks forget that local newspapers are the backbone of a country. That in the U.S. public broadcasting, which was federally funded, allowed many programs to prosper and continue on to this day. The over privatization of mainstream media is what’s caused the absurdity in the distribution of information, that we have to deal with today. Personally, the only reason I watched this video was because Bernie’s name is on it. Otherwise, I am not really interested in these big networks’ corporate guided programming. Such a disappointment that critical issues like the ones Bernie mentioned are never profoundly addressed and discussed w/o any corporate agenda on these TV programs.

    • @phyphrus1934

    • @lexmachina8961
      @lexmachina8961 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I felt like she asked good questions and let him answer fully. He wasn't tricked and she didn't go for the scoop at th expense of the information. She was well documented and savvy and the discussion went just fine. If she has to agree with him fully and serve him the soupe, then I would be worried. But it feels like anyone who wouldn't agree with him fully has to be bought.
I hear a lot of people complaining about the corporate media and I agree on the principle (media and corporate are two words that shouldn't go well together).
That said, I've watched a LOT of independent media shows on the internet and boy they are so propaganda driven and often mean spirited. The narrative is king there.
The cognitive biases are all over the place ad they are not informing. They are selling their ideology at any cost. And more often than not, they are attacking each other, even though they are supposed to be on the same side. And the reason is simple: they all want to establish themselves as the new reference and be considered as the new independent but mainstream thing (which is also contradictory). Therefore, it's not just about informing now, it's also about smearing their colleagues. All in all, it's a mess, painful to watch, and their news are tainted.
In my view, them as an alternative is worst than the corporate media at this point.
So, yes, corporate media isn't ideal nor is it objective. But we all know objectivity doesn't exist. As long as you know what you are watching/reading and their affiliation, you can decode the information.
Don't expect one media to inform you, you are supposed to read/watch a large spectrum of them to have a pretty good picture of any situation. Informing yourself is your responsibility alone.
And, in my experience, the worst at this point in time is those independent channels. Sometimes I can't even tell if they are better or worst than Fox News and I'm not exaggerating.
So I don't really understand your complaint here since Bernie is 100% given the chance to express his views and none of his words were twisted. The mood was friendly and she knew her topic very well. So what is the problem?

Thank you for your reply @@yvonneplant9434 but I must disagree. How she treats others regardless of party affiliation doesn't excuse her lack of professionalism. Instead of actually interviewing Bernie and asking him why he stated what he did about the corporate media, then allowing him to explain his point of view, Margaret attacks his statement without any real analysis. Another example of a journalistic miss is when she asks Bernie if Bill Gates is a billionaire he likes which can mislead viewers to believe that Bernie hates Billionaires. Fighting against the policies that favor and benefit the rich (not just billionaires) and those in that class that use their power to influence and abuse our system of government not only to their benefit but to the detriment of the working class and the less fortunate. Lastly, if she this is just the way she is with all guests then maybe we shouldn't call her a journalist. Editorial contributor would make a better title. Again, hank you for replying. Consider Jimmy Carter 💟
After his presidency, he continued doing great deeds; his involvement with leaders in Middle East, to negotiate a lasting Peace (@ that time).
President Carter's life long commitment to & he physically worked on project homes at Habitat for Humanity
Carter is the One who negotiated the release of American Hostages held by Iran. It was a very long process, and the hostages, blindfolded & restricted, would be shown on American Nightly news~limited by Iran's parameters & film. Carter worked endlessly but he succeeded!!
But the "dirty dog" move came from the incoming US president: He (& his people) manipulated the situation So that = He'd be sworn in, announce the release of Hostages, and they'd being returning... Blah blah. Not 1 word of credit went to Carter at that moment. Eventually reporters would refer to "the timing" of it all. WHAT WOULD YOU EXPECT FROM AN ACTOR/POLITICAN❓
Yeah it would not be the last time Reagan would Manipulate Reality so that he could get away with "things". I mean, really! An actor for president😟
That was the beginning of standards slipping~vote some one into presidential office ~bc you liked them in the movies [No! No one would admit that ]

This isn't hostile at all! She's asking pointed questions - like any journalist should. NEVER take the kind person in front of you by face-value, always try to find the truth in and behind the words. That's what journalists need to do, and it's really sad that people are so unused to it now that they think this interview was hostile. It definitely wasn't.
Yes, she asked things like "are you profiting from your book-tour" because that is also important to know! People who might vote for him want to know those things. And he answered it in the only way that is right - "It's not my decision, it's the publisher's decision and I need to work within the system" And that he's not particularly happy about it. But even if he had tried to evade that, that's still information for the viewers! This way, he got out with his shining knighthood intact and the points he's fighting for were mentioned often - even though he had to do that himself.
tl:dr - not a hostile interview. Just a normal interview of a politician who is of major interest to the people.

DF is basically like the lights are on but no one's home, and they find that acceptable. I don't have an issue with a politicians age (Bernie is clearly sharp as a tack), but I DO care about ability...Fetterman needs to be allowed time to heal and shouldn't be forced out because he's progressive and doesn't fit the narrative of the elitists strong arming the Democratic party.

Focus more on giving people resources than a handout. Medicare for all is great... but I would love to see him focus also on antitrust, and overhauling the education system to teach and train ppl with real, valuable skills rather than simply pushing to raise the minimum wage. Low wages are a symptom, but not the root of the problem...but Rome wasn't built in a day so we can start with Medicare for all.

I agree with much of what you wrote, especially the parts about ensuring that people have the skills to succeed, antitrust, education reform (I taught for 26 years. The curriculum is very outdated, and not suitable for non academic students). The one crucial tenet that I believe is missing for many is: HOPE. People have to believe that the playing field is fair enough for them to commit the effort to participate; to believe that their efforts will pay off. Sometimes giving one a free push can give them the incentive to continue to strive forward.@@marcjones744

Important point. There should be a mechanism for those discoveries at the university level to not lead to profit for the companies which simply mass produce the discovery made in a small uni lab, but also to profit that same lab or at least its university

Back in the day we used to refer to "gotcha questions." Obviously directed towards tripping up the interviewee, putting them on the spot needlessly, creating division where there naturally isn't any and emboldening the useless division that does exist, distracting from substantive content, and generally conveying a mild, sometimes not so mild, hostility. As if it indicates good journalism. It doesn't. But now it's so much a part of our media culture we don't even examine that anymore. Bernie, experienced and savvy as he is, handled these beautifully. But gosh I hate that format.

I'm a Democrat. I like Bernie and his influence. I voted for him in 2016, and have donated. I like the way he handled this interview. I'm also Working Class. Margaret really does have an impressive resumé, but she's not working class which is not a condemnation, she deserves success. At the same time, when Bernie brings up paid leave, she should be mindful that there are many, MANY more working Americans who do NOT have a $5 million net worth and a $300K salary with benefits. Those people work hard too. The first thing she brought up was the tax rate (factually correct) in response. Which is telling. Wealthier people worry about taxes. Working Class people worry about being wiped out by medical bills. BUT THE DEBATE MARGARET - would people pay higher taxes if they did not have to pay impossible medical bills? Wherever your sympathies may reside Margaret, you ARE a member of the elite Establishment. Most of the rest of us are not. Bernie is right to criticize big media and question what influences them. Corporate media is corporate friendly. Well done, Bernie.

People have so much power but they are not using it because of selfishness or just ignorance, people can shut those media companies in days by just turning the dem thing off, and they can change the system of government by just no one voting for anyone until the system is changed, that if only people can get together in one voice.

"How often do we talk about wealth income inequality?" Exactly! Corporate media protects the greed destroying middle class and politics because they almost never talk about this. And when they do, it's frivolous rather than in depth.

Bernie, in his candidacy in 2016, raised voices against the Dem standard. A Republican, without incumbency, has not won the White House since G. Bush, so let's just say that Repubs are not the nation's preference. Dems, maybe. But Bernie..... that message has never be nationally platformed before 2016. These ideas, their time has come. Let's GOOOOOOOO!!!!
