  • Situated on the east coast of Guernsey with views out to neighbouring islands, Herm and Sark, St Peter Port is a charming town with cobbled streets blending history with excellent restaurants and local shops. Known colloquially as ‘Town’, St Peter Port is the island-hopping centre of the Bailiwick and home to many eateries and hotels, as well as museums, seasonal markets, libraries and the tourist information centre; perfect for getting a taste of island life.

The best part is knowing that Tricycle outside Boots would be totally safe even if the owner was in there for an hour.

I remember shopping for jewellery in Machon's during family holidays. They had a huge revolving display of 'Sarkstone' jewellery in the window at the time. I think it was actually crystal costume jewellery, but it mostly came in two colours - a dark, rich purple and a lighter lilac, and various combinations of the two. As an ’80s teen, I absolutely loved it.
I also notice you went past The Lexicon - I often went in there for books, stationery and art supplies. Glad to see it's still thriving. I also remember going to the Guernsey Press Shop (which used to be on Smith Street) - sadly that seems to have closed now.
Long overdue a visit to Guernsey - hoping it will happen soon. Good to watch your videos in the meantime, though. Thanks!

When my wife and I were in Guernsey in May/June 2023 I noticed the plaque on the side of the church regarding Major-General Sir Isaac Brock, KB was looking in sad condition. I sent a picture of it to the Ontario Archives regarding it's poor condition. They said they will look into it but it's difficult to maintain Ontario historical plaques outside of Ontario and Canada. I offered to take a new one to Guernsey but haven't heard back from them as yet, not that I expect that will happen. In their defence it is a long way for them and those plaques are probably not prepared for the salt air as Lake Ontario is all 'fresh' water.

    Love this place❤
I love the old windows from the shops. And it's a pity that the Body Shop 's gone.
Your daughter has grown so much and she looks exactly like her father😉

I think the problem with the shops in the town centre is that they are too quirky. Nothing wrong with quirky but that appeals to the casual shopper (locals know the shops, more for cruise arrivals, so seasonal sales). Food & drink establishments, if good, will always be King.

I have been visiting Guernsey each summer for some years now, and last summer I noticed exactly what you are describing in this video. Not only numerous vacant shop spaces on the High Street, but also quite a number of abandoned houses inside the island - which to me was a new situation. I am wondering if Guernsey's economic situation is going downhill - the gap between the rich tax avoiders and the normal working population increasing, with higher prices and therefore less purchasing power for most people. Just a thought - perhaps you have some insight into this question?

You're lucky to have a ramp at Market Steps now, we had to bump our buggies up down the steps a few years back. Usually someone kind would assist you 😉
Town has certainly changed though. Nice to see Machons still there 😊

Does anyone remember a shop in the Pollet called "Things" - mid seventies. Owned by a young couple, Bob Mc Meehan (not sure of the spelling) and his wife. They also owned a shop called Upstairs Downstairs, also cafe in Petit Bot. They were a lovely couple. My sister and myself worked for them. Bridie and Mary from N Ireland. Thank you for sharing this with us. St Peterport is so full of charm and old buildings with lots of small individual shops.

    Hi Ross,
I didn't see guernsey photographic in the arcade, are they still i busines? Also the press shop in the high street seems to have disappeared, they also had a shop in smith street across from the post office!
The high street now seems to be a collection of shops selling expensive junk. I can remember when we had kimbers, collins ,machons and Woolworths, and masion Carrie had two floors silver service and self service upstairs,oh how times have changed.

Yes those cobbled roads are just the same from when I was growing up there. The shops however sooooo different. Lloyds Bank has been there forever. Does anyone, reading this, have any facts about the history of that building I'm just curious. Thank you Ross - good walk.
