This song is so British that whenever this American listens to it in the car, by the end of the second verse I'm driving on the left side of the road. Great version, great vocals...thanks much for sharing.
sorry to be somewhat pendantic.. but truthfully its so 'English'... For an Englishman erased by 'Britishness', Genesis spoke to my heart and soul, and a merry old soul was me!
I saw Steve in concert a couple of weeks ago, even got a selfie with him and had a chinwag. He didn't look ET to me, but after all I had several beers before 😂

Phil's vocals are a hard act to follow. Some of his best, I think.
November 2023, and perhaps very sadly this song is just as relevant as ever. Painfullly beautiful brilliant music. Thanks for keeping it alive, Mr. Steve Hackett. And thanks for playing my city regularly, always great to see you and your band, and always doing this song.
You're kidding, aren't you? Underrated? Either you don't understand the meaning of the word, or you don't know much about the Genesis back catalogue and how this track is widely recognised as being one of their finest.
I saw Steve in concert a couple of times when Gary O'Toole was the drummer. His drumming in the Hierophant was out of this world. Great singer and great drummer.
@@AdriaanJABreukel Yes. I had to stop listening ten seconds into the vocals. I am no Phil Collins fanboy, but this is one song for which his singing is hard to beat.
Saw Steve when he was struggling to make a go of it on his own. Just bought tickets to see him in SF this coming NOV. Can't wait his band is looking amazing.
Steve Hackett is bringing so much to the stage these days, as he always has. He stays true and carries on with the best of what progressive rock offers. But way more than that, he advances jazz fusion and psychedelic rock. Hearing him and his group live made my heart stop. Thank you so much Steve for keeping it going, it's my favorite kind of music and I wish it could find more purchase in the world.
It's 1979. I'm in high school. I live in Southern California and I just discovered Genesis. I go to the record store and buy my first record, Wind & Wuthering. I hear this song and I'm transferred to another world. "Dark and grey," that must be what it's like in England.
I love this music. And it also makes me realize just how amazing Phil’s voice and singing ability was… and how it perfectly enhanced this amazing music. Gosh… what a band they were. We are lucky to live in that era and know of Genesis.
I always thought that Gary brought so much to Steve’s Band. Back in the nineties, Steve was really struggling touring here in the states. I saw him at a couple real small gigs on the Guitar Noir tour, nobody there, Steve was not getting his due. It is so wonderful to see him and the top of his craft and getting the notoriety he so well deserves. Always felt that he was the underdog of the band. We are so lucky that he has kept this music alive for us to witness. God Bless you Steve and Band. Let’s skip the news boy, I’ll go make some tea. Putin and the Russians too much for me….
Interesting take on Steve. I always viewed Steve as the only former member of Genesis who continued carrying the torch of the prog that we all love. He alone continued creating new and beautiful/powerful music. Steve is the only ex Genesis member who's been prolific in his output. And as great musicians Tony Banks and Rutherford are, I never could understand why they didn't create much music on their own.
A magnificent version of a beautiful track, Gary O'Toole gets the vocals spot on, and the musicianship of the band and orchestra makes for a perfect blend with Steve's wonderful guitar. Bravo!
Amazing version of one of the best songs on wind and by genesis for that matter. Musical Brilliance in every way and deep lyrics. Hackett really loves his music and to perform and hasn’t lost a beat. Have seen all his tours since he went solo and they are always incredible. Watching and listening to this song especially with the orchestra was a real treat!
Have heard so many versions of this stella song sung by numerous people but Gary O’ Toole at this particular concert nailed it. Well done gentlemen and ladies.
Is it just me??? Or is this NOT JUST WONDERFUL??!! Gary O' Toole sings this wonderfully.. Always loved when he gets to the line, '5 past 9' cause he would look down and tap his watch..so meaningful 🍻✌
I completely disagree. The vocals are horrendous, I had to switch it off - absolutely no emotion in his voice - the exact opposite of Phil. My favourite Genesis track too.
@@tattyheid7279 awwwwe.. Come on now lol..of course they're different!!and I love the original with Phil,no denial lol..gotta give props to Gary though, at least I do..my fave live version is from the fire and ice soundtrack..also love the genesis revisited 2 version..and also the W&W version🍻✌
Encore un chef-d'œuvre de Genesis. Excellente interprétation de Steve Hackett, un guitariste parmi les plus grands. Un merci éternel à ce groupe de musiciens incroyables.
Such a beautiful version of a song from the most underrated Genesis album...and the lyrics speak perfectly to our time and to this week when Russians are invading Ukraine.
Already born classicals, classy cool & forever green, recalling childhood when we used to be such dreamers and believers, when we wanted to build up the alternative to the real world and it used to sound just this good, today's kids deserve the best stuff to grow up with... that's what fans are for. Listening the ...two cores of Genesis band seems to me a great achievement that they decided to split and let us enjoy...more shades of Genesis, yeah, sounds so delightful It might create addiction, my very favorite addiction, Peter Gabriel became a peace activist in his songs, Phil Collins the greatest show man, but this is true Genesis core we used to learn to get fond of, very good decision to carry on the brand it's just lovely 🤗💋🥂🍀💎💯🌈
This Royal Festival Hall concert with the Heart of England Orchestra has got to be one of the best Hackett and his band have ever done. I so wish I had been there and will look out for where and when they are all together again.
Absolutely outstanding! Confident vocals from Gary add to an already exceptional rendition of this timeless classic. Bravo and thank you to Steve and the whole band.
Wow! Just simply wow. As much as I love Craig's drumming, Gary is a super talent. I was so lucky to be there. Steve's playing brings joy to so many...thank you
