Love to see young folks doing this. I've been a builder for over fifty years and just have a couple comments. I hope they are taken as constructive. First thing that caught my eye was the treated 6x6 s used for gussets on the loft. I am sure these are just temporary as I nice porch with columns on the corners made of the same logs are in your future plans. And then having built my own log structure for a shop many years ago and having made a few mistakes the glaring problem I see is the notching. The way this was done is what is called the Lincoln Log way. Like the ones we use to play with. The problem with this is they are water catchers. Water will catch on the upward facing notch and will seep in between the notches and sit there rotting out the corners prematurely. There are two ways to avoid sitting water in there when building. One is the dove tail notch and the other is the fitted Swedish notch. Only the bottom of the upper log is notched doing it the Swedish way. Regardless I still love the idea, the work involved and especially the location. Nothing better then the silence of the woods and a star filled night.
+Doug Roberts Thank you very much Doug for your humble input. I agree with you completely and I appreciate your suggestions. When I built this cabin I was literally learning as I went. In the years that have passed I have gained a much better understanding of log cabin construction, although I still have a long way to go. But I've taken what I've learned with my experience, and from helpful suggestions from people like you, to start the construction on a brand new log cabin.
This looks incredible, I was telling my step mom about this and she said I would love something like this because I'm a loner and she's exactly right. The narrative was especially entertaining. Great job!

Matt de Oliveira ...good for you Matt and others who share this intention. I have lived the simple-small way for nearly 10 years now. I started the easy way by buying a cheap used 24 foot trailer and placing it on a friend's wooded property using one heavy duty electric chord from his home to my trailer for my portable light. I joined 24 hr Fittness for my shower and shampoo. I eat mostly fresh raw fruit and salads so my cooking is mostly on a small scale, using a cute little butane one burner stove. I heat my space with the Big Buddy propane heater and i keep 6 propane tanks filled at all times in winter, just incase I get snowed-in for a few months. I charge my smart phone in my car cig lighter; and my lap top at a cafe or library or Sr Center. My bed is covered with 4 very warm but light weight down-quilts from thrift shops (which can be washed and dried at any laundromat very nicely.) I built a sawdust poop-box and I am good to go! Last year I gave the trailer to a homeless guy and I moved to another wooded property and bought a 30 ft. construction office trailer for $2,000. and gutted it out and designed my own inner space with used furnishings. My costs are low, but I'm getting antsy to expand my life now! This life is not always comfortable. So my message to you is living small can be an enormous blessing for a stretch of time and yet it can eventually start to feel like a curse... be careful what you wish for!
+Matt de Oliveira: Don't even get me started... I think it is criminal and can't believe people voted it in as a good idea. Makes retirement impossible--you always need to pay the government.
This video is so relaxing, lol. This house is awesome! And can I say, this Crow bit made me tear up. So cute that you made a crow friend and he enjoyed coming to hangout.
I think it is great idea. The fact that you donated this cabin to the youth group of the church that owns the property was not only the right thing to do, it shows the content of your character. I commend you for building this cabin and it is my belief that any one of the friends you made during this build will use the example you set to continue the work you've inspired to build other cabins in that area for similar use. ❤❤

Great job on your log cabin bro. Please ignore any negative comments! The good Lord has blessed you with many talents. The cabin was amazing, but the story you told kept me wanting to know more! Great job!
If you want to preserve the bottom logs or the entire log cabin you can make a fairly effective wood preservative using free used deep fry oil from a local restaurant. Take the deep fry oil and filter it through a crude screen just to remove particle of food then add 1/2 cup of powdered copper sulfate to each gallon of oil, blend real good until it is dissolved which may take some time and possibly some heating. Generously brush this oil into the ends of every log and on all outside surfaces paying particular attention to the lower outside areas, make sure to put a good 3 soakings worth and you will see how well it repels and prevents insects from entering the wood. This treatment should be done in the summer time on extremely hot days to allow good saturation. Done over at least once every 3 years can keep logs rot and insect free for decades!.
I love this so much!! I have a dream of building my own cottage and living off the land. Farming and gardening and such... free of fluorescent lights and 9-5s. I'm still in high school though so I can only plan. Thank you for this video and I love the cottage!
Thanks OutsideFun1 for posting this great project. Sorry that so many people attacked you for the comment on being a youth pastor, but keep the faith Brother. And I hope you get to enjoy the cabin and the memories of building it.
+Daniel Vachon - I purposefully went to find "so many people [that] attacked" as you mention and what I found was one jerk atheist and a handful of jerk believers on wholesale attack on *all* atheists. You know what else I found? Atheists trying to make peace, but a believer INTENT on fighting. And here, the pièce de résistance--the requisite misrepresentation of what really happened: Someone going on record (that would be you) blowing it far more out of proportion for what it really was so that the casual observer would be manipulated into thinking there was massive persecution afoot, and of course "the atheists were at it again!"--when they were not. Good grief. (before clicking Reply on this comment, I scrolled and scrolled to find "so many people" and I didn't find it.)
You are right, but they never did confer the test in rare instances, where humans may not be a threat, perhaps near proximity to the nest may also trigger it.

I had built one similar to this in my backyard. I put it up on huge telephone poles about 10 ft. high. It was 8 x12, with a walk around on two sides, fenced off. Last year the CITY took it from some law they had. So they can build city law buildings or something for their buddy so their business can make tax bucks. Bulldozed my house, my business building, the fort, my shed and new 8x8 shed. They were to work out a deal with my atty. So I have all my stuff of 62 years in that house plus my deceased mom& dads stuff like antiques. Just had new carpet put in and a new digital water softener, 90 plus Rheem furnace, new 600 dollar unbreakable 2nd door. Amish work done everywhere. Amish oak kitchen, 12 ft. wall done in brick and a partial on the floor for the buck stove with dual wall output. Well it was all there, my drums, my awesome stereo, ahhh. They were to contact him,my lawyer that is. THEY DIDN'T. THEY BULLDOZED IT ALL. I HAD A MINOR HEART ATTACK OVER THE STRESS. Felt like someone was choking me in Epsteins cell. I didn't tell the doctor but right away he picked up on a heart murmur I didn't have before. Well it's been six months since and now I think I am just about ready to look at it all. Itemize, make pics. Ahh the pics, all the family pictures from over 120 years ago. GEESH. It is stuff like that, that could give me a stroke if I don't watch it. gotta go.
omg totally agree, would make an awesome guest house in my backyard.. heck I would stay in it my guests can stay in my house, so that I get a great sleep!

I was told to "educate" myself , "youre harming the duck"! Here's what I know to be wrong when feeding ducks bread or crackers... They fill too easily and there's little to no nutritional value. They don't explode, get sickly or show signs of bowel upset. *it's the same as when we indulge ourselves with a nice treat like a cookie or ice cream cone* I feel that blinky , blind ducky, isn't training for the olympics so he'll be ok! Coulda been a video of you saving a baby from school crocodile in a raging river and there would likely be more negative comments then good. Just one of those days I guess. Plus I couldn't allow people to dig at a fellow Canuck who made everything clear in the beginning. I should get a cape. :)
Just read my response. Saving a baby from school wasn't the original idea but I have a new phone thats got a interesting auto correct for its typing. Should probably start to reread before I post. Oops. Auto correct. Making people sound stupid one message at a time. Should be a shirt or at the very least a bumper sticker

I saw the thumbnail and "$500" and thought it must be click bait, but no, it's legit. 👍 That's an awesome little place to have tucked away to "hang your hat" whenever you want. Of course to a squatter it only costs $0 and I wouldn't be surprised if it was occupied when you showed up to it after being gone a year.
scarletfluerr That actually sounds nice and makes sense.. He'll know if it was them if he finds little upgrades, like the logs varnished/treated, things painted, everything neat and kept up, etc. :) I have a place in the boondocks I only go to in summer and I know somebody uses it sometimes. Maybe some local having the occasional fight with his wife? But they're very respectful, leave virtually no sign and break nothing so I don't make anything of it. So as long as they stay "nice" and don't start forgetting to flush the toilet before they go, or worse, I needn't start sharpening the teeth on some big old bear traps I found up their years ago. Finding the limping local should be easy after that.. 😏
not too many years ago when u came across a canin in the woods like that, they are for hunters, fishers or campers to use as long as you clean it, be respectful of the area and animals and never leave anything there that can't be used by others.
Crying Hippy Ah, from the days of "common-courtesy" and "common-sense". Yes, legend has it there was an ancient era before such things became so elusive ;) Well, most of the time I hang my hat in a house in New York City, so that kind of thing is more the exception than standard, although I am that way myself. (I've been known to pick up other people's candy wrappers and trash left on hiking trails while murmuring curses under my breath as I do so lol) Who knows, with all the fancy trends like planking and the ice bucket challenge, maybe the above will become "trendy" again. Your truly, the pessimistic "city mouse" 😉
Groovy Guru I'm with ya...even when just panning across the trees, the lynx prints in snow...I was living vicariously through video..perfect, serene area
Good job man! I think that all kids should have the opportunity to lend a hand in a construction project such as this. It's a great way to fill in the blanks on how to complete maybe less than certain parts, like the roof for instance. I wish I had paid more attention myself as a kid when my dad built our cabin.
God bless you for donating your hard work to the church! I'm sure you'll get some stick about it in the comments section, but soldier on. What you do for Christ is the only thing that lasts!

Good job and well done, you a kind person. The raven has a very good memory and will recognize you for as long as it lives especially if you squak back and forth with it and feed it, they are know to be the smartest birds in the bird family and avian scientist's say that all black birds are in this group of "smartest birds" including the common blackbird that you find in grocery parking lots.
You build what you can with what you have and that's just fine! I think it's a fine cabin! A man could ask no more than to shelter from the elements in such a fine cabin.
Me and my son's saved a baby raven he would always visit every day usually, even after I was gone two years I came back to fix a neighbour's roof he came to visit. His name was Caw.
i dont know if you know how smart crows and ravens are, but they can certainly remember people. crows are as smart as, if not smarter than chimps in some ways. they can and do make tools and use tools, and studies have shown they can communicate very complex things to other members of their flock, like specific humans that are a threat. the members of the flock will continue to relay this information to other crows, to the point where even after the crow who originally encountered the threat has died, his family and 'friends' will continue to remember and tell other crows about the threat. another fun fact is they can learn to speak human words in the same way as parrots, but crows will usually only choose one or a few people to speak to, where parrots will speak to anyone and anything thats near by, or to themselves just for fun. Im 100% certain that this crow or raven remembered you, especially since you would vocalize to him. he likely remembers your time together as fondly as you do, i doubt theres much entertainment for him up there.
Charles the crow definitely knew who you were. In fact He knew way more about you than you knew of him. They are very intelligent and pay close attention to detail. Great story
During the 1980s I built a 16 feet wide by 30 feet long log cabin with a sleeping loft. I peeled the logs which makes for a nicer looking home. It took me only five months to finish the cabin after waiting one year for the logs to dry after cutting them. My log cabin looks more like a showcase home compared to the small cabin this man built. It was warm in the winter and cool in the summer due to the natural insulating properties of logs. My cabin had electricity and running water even though it was built in a remote area at the extreme end of the power lines. Nearest neighbor was 1/4 mile away. The cost to build my cabin was around $1,000 dollars as I owned the land the logs were cut on. My only real expense was the lumber in the roof and floor which I hired a man to saw into boards from a few big pine trees on the property. Keep in mind this was in the mid 1980s when things were a lot less costly than they are today. I brought up a family in that cabin and it was the happiest time of my life. I planted huge gardens and the wife canned everything for the winter. We raised two or three hogs every year and done a lot of fishing to round out our diet. I would gladly live those days over in a heart beat if I could turn back the pages of time. Never give up your dreams people, they do come true and I am living proof of that. You will be surprised what a dream and a lot of hard work can do.
44wizbang Any respect or admiration I had for your accomplishment vanished after your braggadocios comparison to YOUR cabin. It wasn't about a competition it was simply a man sharing about HIS work. Sad indeed for you.

Duan Torruellas go to the collector at the city hall and they can give you the info on who pays the taxes. Get the info and write to them.. I did it.
@@duantorruellas716 in Canada land titles are public record and each province/territory has their own title system or database.
This looks incredible, I was telling my step mom about this and she said I would love something like this because I'm a loner and she's exactly right. The narrative was especially entertaining. Great job!
Tosha M Thanks Tosha!
Me too
OutsideFun1 Welcome!
You should be PROUD to have created that wonderful cabin.. ANYONE, who put thumps down, just have issues and a sad LIFE ...Great job!
Does anyone else find it absurd to ask for permission to build your own house? What about having to pay rent to live in your own home?
No, it make s a perfect sense... So fathers in city hall will know you build your house and now they can start taxing you, welcome to a land of the free...
Matt de Oliveira Here's another one. When did we all decide that we would spend half our lives at work instead of living?
aesopsystems I have thought about those things. I call it the economic trap. I'm currently working my way out of it and plan on freeing as many people as I can once I reach the other side.
My bed is covered with 4 very warm but light weight down-quilts from thrift shops (which can be washed and dried at any laundromat very nicely.)
I built a sawdust poop-box and I am good to go!
+Matt de Oliveira:
Don't even get me started...
I am very sorry to hear about your dad's passing. I have been watching you and your dad build the cabin from the beginning. Remember the good and know he is still with you. God bless and again sorry to hear about your dad. I never had a dad and don't know what it's like to have someone to work and to teach you life.
Remember he is still there.
Great job on your log cabin bro. Please ignore any negative comments! The good Lord has blessed you with many talents. The cabin was amazing, but the story you told kept me wanting to know more! Great job!
Hi
Wow! Cool info thanks for sharing
wouldn't used food oil encourage larger critters to start chewing at the wood?
craft Soda My uncle used motor oil when he built his log home.

I love this so much!! I have a dream of building my own cottage and living off the land. Farming and gardening and such... free of fluorescent lights and 9-5s. I'm still in high school though so I can only plan. Thank you for this video and I love the cottage!
Dont let anything stop you from following that dream if it really matters
I'm 30 and have the same dream. School and work was a big waste of time and soul crushing. I just want to live free off the land
Keep up the good work brother, this world needs more like you.

Thanks OutsideFun1 for posting this great project. Sorry that so many people attacked you for the comment on being a youth pastor, but keep the faith Brother. And I hope you get to enjoy the cabin and the memories of building it.
+Daniel Vachon Thanks brother for your kind and considerate comment. God bless!
Good grief.
(before clicking Reply on this comment, I scrolled and scrolled to find "so many people" and I didn't find it.)
you'd be surprised. I read somewhere that Crows remember your face for 3 to 5 years.
You are right, but they never did confer the test in rare instances, where humans may not be a threat, perhaps near proximity to the nest may also trigger it.
Crows will remember you for life. They can even pass on their grudges to their children.. crazy!
A group of crows is called a murder.

Bro, I’m impressed. Not sure everyone understands what it takes to pack in what you’ve already packed in, yet alone build what you have. Great job, really nice.
I am always impressed with the knowledge that people have to do these things. Eventually I would like to live in my own place away from the noise of neighbors in a where I don't have to pay a mortgage or electricity!! I love it. It looks wonderful inside and out!!

It doesn't have to last a century, only the time which you would wish to use it and live in it. The bark on the logs is lovely. Nice job!
This is the coolest thing I’ve seen in a while. Good work.
this cabin has only ONE flaw and it's MAJOR.. It's not in my backyard!!! :0)

This video is truely beautiful. A time capsule for your friends and family to enjoy long after you and the cabin have moved on. The structure may not last a century, but the memories will last forever. Hopefully you insipre many to do something like this.
Cool cabin but my favorite part of the video is your story. I love that you work as a youth pastor. You had the kids help on your cabin. Then you donated you cool cabin to the church for the youth and others to enjoy. Your a good man the world needs more men like you....

Snowshoes were used in North America but Skis were used in Russia. This guy's channel Survival Russia, he used Hunter's skis, they are wider than cross country skis, but he floats on 3 feet of snow. It's better than snowshoes. check him out, he's fascinating. P.S. my Grandfather used to grow peppermint around the house and barn. He said rodents and insects hate the smell so bye bye squirrel. Love the channel

This is BEAUTIFUL! Great job!! Nice, little place, PERFECT REALLY! I especially LOVE the landscape in the snow!!!
I think it was a great video and the fact you took time out of your day to build something that helped other's build themselves up is commendable. People are going always have something negative to say about other's dedication, sacrifice and hard work. those people who down play this only envy your self sacrifice. Thanks for sharing

*Your cabin is an absolute dollhouse, tarp roof, gapped door and all! It's quaint, cozy and serving it's purpose! WELL DONE*
▶️▶️▶️▶️ I feed EVERYTHING: ants, squirrels, strays of all sorts.. that being said.. I posted a very short clip of myself communicating with a blind duck. I quack and he quacks and I continue quacking until he finds me in the park. I bring him treats like corn, crackers, breads, corn flakes...he loves it.
That being said- EVERYONE on youtube (especially) are filled with KNOW IT ALL info, there's ALWAYS going to be someone on here (and in life), that want to point out issues or flaws-, naysayers and killjoys!
I wonder what their log cabin looks like?
This is awesome..I think it's an awesome project for a youth group..we need more good men and women in this world like you to do things like this with kids..they learned skills that could one day save their lives..God bless you
You narrate this video like Kevin Kostner in Dances with Wolves. Especially your expalining your relationship with the crow. Nicely done.
These are a lot of fun to watch. Some nights when my mind is racing with the days worries and I can't sleep, I imagine myself in the bush building a simple cabin, and somehow it relaxes me and I drift off...
You shouldn't have explained yourself, you already lost to the hater's pressure. This is some great stuff that you did alone and is definetely a successful moment in your life! Good on you !
Who the hell hit the thumbs down? He made all the obvious reasons that people would use as the common criticisms clear at the beginning of the vid. Did a good job for what it was intended for and he donated it to his church whos land it is and were cool enough to let him build it in the first place. Good job my northern brethren eh. I guess you just cannot please some people. I am only leaving this comment to balance out the negative comments. Again good work bud
chomama77 lol Your outburst of frustration (on my behalf) warmed my heart and gave me a good chuckle. Thank you for seeing the cabin I built, rather than its flaws.
Ha Well sometimes lack f common sense gets the better of me. I should know that there are way to many people that have computers that shouldn't.
Should be a shirt or at the very least a bumper sticker
chomama77 There are always people insecure about themselves that feel better by putting someone else down. They are of course the weak minded pathetic sort that should be pitied by anyone who gives a care about their emotional issues.
Since it on Church property I would bet the Church youth use it in good weather.
scarletfluerr That actually sounds nice and makes sense..
not too many years ago when u came across a canin in the woods like that, they are for hunters, fishers or campers to use as long as you clean it, be respectful of the area and animals and never leave anything there that can't be used by others.
they have a video on here where an old timer built a house for $50
Crying Hippy Ah, from the days of "common-courtesy" and "common-sense". Yes, legend has it there was an ancient era before such things became so elusive ;)
Well, most of the time I hang my hat in a house in New York City, so that kind of thing is more the exception than standard, although I am that way myself. (I've been known to pick up other people's candy wrappers and trash left on hiking trails while murmuring curses under my breath as I do so lol) Who knows, with all the fancy trends like planking and the ice bucket challenge, maybe the above will become "trendy" again.

Good job man! I think that all kids should have the opportunity to lend a hand in a construction project such as this. I love your cabin! What a fun and rewarding project! Charles is awesome and so is your heart!
love this cabin... simply and beautiful...... peaceful... calm.... free..
i dont know if you know how smart crows and ravens are, but they can certainly remember people. crows are as smart as, if not smarter than chimps in some ways. they can and do make tools and use tools, and studies have shown they can communicate very complex things to other members of their flock, like specific humans that are a threat. the members of the flock will continue to relay this information to other crows, to the point where even after the crow who originally encountered the threat has died, his family and 'friends' will continue to remember and tell other crows about the threat. another fun fact is they can learn to speak human words in the same way as parrots, but crows will usually only choose one or a few people to speak to, where parrots will speak to anyone and anything thats near by, or to themselves just for fun.
Im 100% certain that this crow or raven remembered you, especially since you would vocalize to him. he likely remembers your time together as fondly as you do, i doubt theres much entertainment for him up there.

im a 5th generation carpenter, you did very well building that, cheers!
