In the end I bought the A6100 with kit lens and extra goodies package for 749 shipped to my door. The A6400 is 998. 250 dollars could go towards a Sigma 16mm F1.4 or something else.

correct, however, I suspect that the base price is marked up higher because within the 3-year period their marketing plan will throw a lot of discount on this model. Just my thoughts though.
Richard Butler from Dpreview commented under his A6100 review article about some pricing strategies by camera companies in general. I'm not 100% agree with his point or the business practice but I'd like to hear your thoughts.
It's not under spec'd under any point of view, the theoric lack of color profiles can be simulated, and steady shoot is not good enough on a6600, on the other side it has the best af on the planet, a great sensor and that little size, makes a perfect camera B for even professionals, a perfect camera for vloging, and ideal camera for students as knowing how to you it you can get some serious money with those specs, by the way I'm a professional photographer my main camera is an A7 riii and definitely buying this new a6100

Correction on your video (time stamp 2:50) when you mentioned the dreaded 29:59 record limit. I have the Sony a6100 and I can record continuesly past 30 minutes. which is one of the many reasons that I purchased the Sony a6100 over the Canon M50. The Sony a6100 does NOT have the 30 minute video record limit.

Ya I had alpha camera like 6-7 years back and was annoy with the limited recording time. I'm shock to know they just fixed this in 2019's 6400

What I've learned here that no other TH-cam reviewer has said: the A6400 has a lot of log profiles that the A6100 doesn't have. To me, that's the winning argument to get the Sony A6400.

I am really inclined to buy the Sony a6400 for all of good characteristics, but the price is something to consider… Now that B&H has the a6100 body only at $598… Do you thinks that is a great deal? Is now the time to buy it? I want to make a wise decision. Although I really like all the extra features in the a6400, the deal in a6100 are taking me amazed!

I agree, it’s too close in price to the A6400 and is missing some key features to be as expensive as it is.
Ahh! This is tempting as the Black Friday sales price is 748 for the bundle with the 16-50mm lens.
I disagree solely because it’s mainly a software restriction on the a6100. The $100 sounds about right due to the a6400 having better body quality. Otherwise, dropping the price to even $200 would be a bit of a ripoff considering it’s just a software restriction in the LOG settings. I’m pretty sure you can hard mod an a6100 to enable the extra LOG settings.

Now it's about a $200 difference(I've seen the a6100 new for $600 now ), but it's still hard to choose because the a6400 just seems more solidly built and has unlimited video recording.

@@SneakyCalebIt does for continuous recording. You can't go longer than 30 mins at 4k. Same for even higher end cameras like A7 III

I know this is late. But the a6100 has always had unlimited recording. They just didn’t advertise it. Big fan.

Update: A6100 is now 600 USD and A6400 is around 800 USD. So, for 200 dollar less, you are not gonna miss much.
Edit: So, A6400 is being sold for 900 USD now body only. More reason to get A6100.
If you are a student (in the US) you can buy the a6100 for $478 from Focus Camera and $458 from B&H.

I just bought my a6300 and I'm lovin it. Love the photo and video quality though I'm only using the kitlens. On this video, a6400 is superior but I think a6100 will do the job.

thank you so much for this review. i decided to start saving for canon m50 (because i currently got a crappy auto-focusing nikon d5600) but i saw a review about sony a6100 and i was impressed, so i changed my mind. but my jaw dropped and petrified when i realized here in the philippines sony a6100 was way too expensive than canon m50 (even for mark 2). but with your review, i went to check sony a6400 and for some reason here, a6400's price is much lower than a6100. i will save for a6400 now instead.
@2:55 Actually the a6100 does not have that recording limit. According to the manual, it does have a limit-13 hours: “The maximum continuous recording time for a single movie shooting session is approximately 13 hours (a product specification limit).”

Working to get out of doing my videos with the GP Hero 8 I am looking at the a6100 ($600)vs a6400 ($900). I know very little about cameras and will be using for YT videos and some outside shots and videos. Is the extra $300 worth it for the 6400? I already have the E-mount 16-50 lens that will fit either.

A6600 has a lot better battery, and ibis. other than that they both identical.
I like the a6400 but it retails for $998 on B&H whereas the a6100 retails at Best currently for $699 both with the 16mm-50mm lens Kit. For a few bucks LESS you can pick up the Sony Alpha II for $828 used which isn't a bad Camera in itself. Bit..i was hoping for a Longer Recording Time, on the a6100.
If I only had the funds. I have always wanted to try out a Sony camera as my main TH-cam camera, the Canon M50 plays that role now, and the a6100 really looks good. If I get my finances in order I will have to finally give Sony a try. Thank you again for some of the best camera reviews on TH-cam. I mention this channel a lot, in my videos, because you've got some of the best camera reviews and information on TH-cam.

You would be disappointed about how cheap it feels in your hand and how bad the ergonomics are. The screen is a small joke and the kit lense isl loud . The camera app is terrible, so is the menu system. I tried a sony 6 cam last week and now i dont want one anymore. I really dont understand the hype about sony cams. The m50 maybe is worse in specs but it feels like gold in the hand, compared to the sony and the camera app just works. Not to vorget the shity touch screen implementation sony has. M50 has great touch screen and a flip out screen in my opinion is a much better option.

Yes but what I want the Sony camera for is the uncropped 4k and their awesome auto focus in 4k. I've grown used to having really good autofocus with my M50 but hate the 4k crop and lack of Cannon's awesome dual pixel auto focus found in 1080p. I might even spend the extra bucks to get the a6400 for the picture profiles too. I just have to get the funds first. I know the camera body on the a6100 is plasticie but that I can get used to as well.
David Hayes i hope you get the money soon. I still love my gh5 and my g81 they have great 4 k video and the autofocus is good enough for me. I thought about buing a sony but i just lose to much of what i like about my cameras

I started my channel out with the G7 and loved it. I went to Canon though because I needed the rock solid Auto focus, since I am a 1 man team... But make no mistake, I love Panasonic cameras.

Can you please clarify what you mean when you say the a6100 has a 30 minute video recording limit? Does that just mean if you hit record and let it go, it will stop at 30 minutes and all you have to do is press the record button again to start a new recording?

Sony c'mon you gotta get the pricing right here in India. The A6400+kit lens costs around $1100 in India. If the pricing is right we might have the true successor to the Panasonic Lumix G85!

photos and videos to iphones and ipads. could you do a video on that in

What's the best all around recording lens for the Sony A6400? 16-50mm or 18-135mm? Mainly will be used for indoor live-streaming.
I think I can scrape up an extra $100 for the a6400. The weather seal, metal construction, and the extra video features are probably worth it.
Higher res EVF and pro level shutter life too on the A6400.
The difference between these two cameras is hundreds of dollars not just a hundred. As a first camera A6100 wins because it is hundreds of dollars less expensive. By the time you figure out how to use the camera, you can use the savings towards the new glass to upgrade the kit lens.

I was dead set on the a6400 for only $100 more until I found out it's actually $300 more. I guess Sony had to lower the price because everyone was picking the a6400 over the a6100 because of the $100 price difference (at the time?) It's crazy but the whole 29:59 limit is the reason I'm looking for a new camera in the first place. So now its an extra $300 to be able to record 30 mins or more.. OUCH! great video nonetheless.

I have been looking for something to take nice video and photos on the trail when we ride my side by side. I just started making gopro videos just under a year ago and for what they do they are great. But no manual controls and I have always wanted to get a decent camera to fool around with. But now im down the rabbit hole after 2 weeks of watching videos about Canon and Sony (only 2 im really interested in), The sony definitely won out. Im going to get the a 6400 but not sure which kit lens I want. 16 to 50 mm or 18 to 135? Im leaning toward the longer lens so I can get better action shots from a distance. What do you guys think? Any down side to a lens with a wider range? Yes, I know the Sony wont let me get it wet or too dusty. Just want to get some good shots when we stop at nice scenery or happen on a group of Appalachian Americans sending it through a mudhole. LOL

Both are great but depends if you want a smaller package with the A6400 or the flip out screen on the 90d.

Does the Sony a6100 or a6400 allow you to record internally with an HDMI monitor connected? I have the Panasonic G7 which i have loved so far. However i am thinking of either getting another g7 since I already have a bunch of mft lens...or switch to a budget sony. The draw back i have with the g7 is that I cant record internally while using an external monitor...and i found the lilliput a7s monitor to be perfect but had to return it.
A6100 is currently 648$ body. Thats not bad at all. Might go for it. As a backup/B roll.
I wish you guys would mention in your reviews how many fps these cameras can shoot in SLOW-MO (60, 120, 240) and in which of those the camera actually records it w/audio!

If you want a camera with good autofocus go with the A6400 if you want a camera with better stabilization go lumix g9.

NGL but Nikon started using their F-mount in 1958, their lenses are amazing, this is probably the largest family of lenses out there (over 400 models including third party ones)
I know Sony E-mount is pretty good but I think that you can have even bigger chice with Nikon F
You talk about PP1 all the time, but the Picture Profile options are just containers that you can customize. My PP1 can be different than yours if I change settings in there. All PP containers contain the same settings within so we don’t know if you went in and tweaked things in there to fit your needs...Also, would the a6100 allow you to go into the settings to recreate the “PP1” look?

Assalamualikum! There's definetely more than 100$ difference in price. Roughly around 300$ or more. I preferred A6100 over A6400. I just got one Yesterday. I wasn't concerned about weather sealing as i don't use my equipment in rain. Same specs! I feel like a little warmer tone of a6100 is better than a6400. I will highly suggest a6100 over a6400. Else there's no recording limit on A6100. :)

A6100 has no video recording limit and without any update, because there has never been one. A6400 in addition to the three advantages mentioned above also has a better viewfinder. The price difference is much more than $100.

@@SiriusStudiosOfficial it's a great camera! I recommend it 100%. One thing about it though is that the colors on it look a bit different from Canons (they look less warm) but you can change that in post processing.

You use it when you can’t take a pic of the snow leopard through a chain link fence..
How you use it is you set the camera to manual and twist the focus ring until the camera is focusing on the subject
