Yes I agree the 6400 is worth paying an additional $150. As noted by caliv0608 and others the current price difference (for me) is $599 versus $999. In this case I don’t think the 6400 is worth the additional $400-700. It seems in his closing statements he might agree.
Now 4 years later finding the 6100 for 400$ is it worth it? I want to grab a poketable camera and build an E mount collection, also adapt my EF glass to it
I actually upgraded from an a6000 because financially it makes sense in the long run. I sold off the a6000 before it lost its value at a great price and got a great deal on the a6400 as well.
The a6400 is "so much better" is very subjective and not true for every use case. It might be true for a professional video blogger such as yourself....but for the average weekend photography enthusiast or someone who just wants to take great pictures and occasional video, saving $200 and buying the 6100 is the way to go.
Just bought an A6100....and now I'm currently boxing it back up. Thank you for this video. I found the A6400 for $100 more than what I paid for the 6100. Life saver bro!
You know the A6100 is good when all he can come up are nothing but BS reasons. - No premium feel? Who cares about that when you're busy framing. - No weather sealing? Pretty sure majority of people looking to buy a cheap mirrorless like the A6X00 line are non professional photographers who wouldn't be a photographer for NatGeo. - Viewfinder? It's a freaking mirrorless camera. - A tiny bit smaller buffer? Again, majority of folks looking in to the Sony A6X00 line are non professional photographers. No one of those would be using them to do professional sports photography. Overall this is a bad review of the A6100. I've seen better objective reviews for this camera.
Unless like me you have no use at all for those features that are missing on the a6100. I have the 6000 and there are certain features I always wish it has. The 6100 has those features and no more. I like that.
I had researched both and opted for the A6100. Between the two, I know B&H has a special body-only $150 difference. K&M is $300. Depending on where you order from from, date and specials, the difference is closer to $250-400 less for a 6100 for a turn-key package. On both models the lens and camera coupling are susceptable to weather. Yea on the S-Log. Some have commented that there's a lot you can do in post with Davinci Resolve. Yea on Magnesium feeling more solid than plastics. I had done some 200g vibration/drop tests on aircraft electronics and I agree with this comment: "Plastics generally do better when they strike a hard surface because the shell can flex slowing down the impact jarring the interior components less than a metal rigid body would. A metal body falling against concrete would be a hard shock to everything inside." Regarding features, going from a 6000 to a 6100/6400 is more significant wouldn't you say ? Having the Flip Up Screen, 4K video & Mic Input are significant. I'd like to see the price of the IBIS feature on the elite models come down as they are over-priced since the video still looks bumpy on the 6500/6600 Perhaps when the 6700 is introduced ?. As you see in many comments on lenses, price should be a factor in comparing the degree in which model 2 is better than model 1.

If you frequently shoot in aperture priority, then the a6400 (also a6300,a6500,a6600) allows you to set the minimum shutter speed before bumping up the ISO. This is really handy when shooting sports shots. Sony calls it "ISO Auto Min SS". I use this all the time and really value this feature. The a6100 (and a6000) does not have this feature.

I planned to get this camera but got tired of waiting for it so I just got a 6400 instead. I figured for another $150, the upgrades were worth it. It is a big step up from the NEX5 I have been using for many many years.
I've seen this 150$ thing mentioned a lot but for 900$ I got the 10 - 50mm OSS and the 50-215mm OSS paired with the camera and the a6400 is 1299 with just one mid range lense.
I agree! I see no point in getting the 6100... after buying the 6400 I was a little upset when the 6600 came out but luckily and thanks to your reviews now I know I got the right camera.
Bought the 6400 when it was released and no regreats at all. It’s a beast. I think it’s worth the price at all. No other camers can beat it when combining it with Sigma primes. But I wish 16-55 f2.8 was bit cheaper 🙁
Just bought the a6100 for $700 including the kit lens. For that price difference I’m perfectly fine with the features it’s missing. I’ll use the money I save to buy a nice lens or even a gimbal 🤷🏽♂️
Dear Sony: Give me an a6600 + an upgraded sensor + 4k60fps + 10bit and I'll give you $1,500 + tax. Thanks, Internet P.S. An improved IBIS would be great too.
RageCage1701 hahahaha. Sony will def roll out 4K60 on their full frames first, and then apsc at some point. And what you ask for will probably be 2000-2500 which at that point might as well go full frame
The price difference in Europe is even a bigger problem! 899 euros for the A6100 body only and 922 for the A6400 body only, 23 euros of difference! Just for the weather sealing and better EVF those extra 23 euros start to sound like a bargain when picking the A6400. I think the A6100 is a really nice camera however I don't think Sony really thought out well their pricing strategy with it (Much less in the European Union!)
I checked that weekend when commenting another video about these cameras and in some cases the a6400 was a few Euros cheaper. It probably will change in future but at the moment they cost the same here.
Now in the USA A6100 $648, A6400 $898 - body only. 250 USD difference. I like the A6100, it has a few limitations but image quality, AF, eye AF, are great. It has mic input.
I was just in this boat, from being a longtime a6000 user (6 years or so) I finally upgraded and went with 6400 just for the video profiles and better body
What small lenses do you recommend for the Sony apsc cameras? I am trying to put together a camera body that I can bring into concerts but is absolutely slim.
I don't understand how it can be a 150 dollar difference in the states, but a 400 dollar difference in Canada, unless the price has dropped for the 6100 that much in this past year....
Finally someone is pointing this out. I watched many reviews but none ended with this no-brainer verdict. In Germany the price difference is currently 80€.
How can you determine the speed of the shutter from the sound? If they both are 11 fps, that is their speed. Your perception of speed judging by the sound is ridiculous. Otherwise a really good video 👍
You probably have the electronic front curtain shutter turned on which makes it sound slower as it only flaps once. If it's turned off, it flaps twice making it sound faster. I agree, the a6100 should be $699 at the most.
I think of all of the cameras in the a6xxx series the a6100 is the best value for photographers. For video it's the a6400. There are folks for whom the $150 difference can be a make or break decision.
Great video, but.... You are a little confused as to what White Balance means. I have seen you make the same erroneous statement in a previous video. White Balance refers to the color temperature of the image, not the brightness. So it controls how warm or cool the image is, not how bright or dark it is. Anyway- I really find high value in your content, so please do keep up the good work!
I'm still shooting with the a6000. Been thinking of upgrading to a6600 or 2nd hand a6500 (much lower price) mainly to get the IBIS, better AF, bigger buffer, better EVF and bit better body. I may just wait until they upgrade the sensor. In the meantime I have just bought on good sale price the new Sony E 70-350mm F4.5-6.3 G OSS which in my mind seems a better investment as I've decided I'm not going to go to a full frame system in the future.
what a great review! I was uncertain about which camera to purchase, as there is a small price difference between the two available here in Romania atm. keep up the great work and greetings from Romania!🙂
Been using Canon 70D and I do mostly photos at low light and gloomy weather conditions. Planning to switch to sony along with the sigma 16mm 1.4 lens. Should I be worried about the battery life in A6000 for photos only? or Should I consider the A6100 given the budget is close to $1000.

I just got the a6100 because I got it for 589. I already have an A7iii so I’m using this for vlogging only pretty much. The difference was 300 dollars so for me it was worth it. I won’t be using the viewfinder much but really needed that flip screen and mic input. Totally agree if the difference was 150 dollars but found this on sale and jumped on it. Great videos man! Also have my original silver a6000 and another white a6000 modified for IR. 😆. Love Sony cameras!!
The difference in price is around $300 not $150 based off your affiliate links. I'm looking to get into this format, with stock lens its a considerable difference
Hi Arthur, great videos I have followed your channel for a very long time, the quality is just getting better and better. Can I ask what hot shoe mount is that on the a6400?
I’m upgrading my a6000 to the a6600 and can’t wait for it to arrive! Any tips for setting it set up and digging through the mountains of settings for video? I never got into video with the a6000 but it’s my primary purpose for the a6600
a6100,,, if you need better weather resistance then a6400, definitely not a6000=too outdated & iso performance is much worse I did several low light video tests, trust me
I've got the A6000 and was thinking of upgrading when they brought out the A6400, once I'd become immune to the cost of it here in Oz. Now there's another one in the lineup to consider. I wish Sony would name their increasingly better models in ascending order so I could keep track of what level to go for. :)
Sony are trying to do that. It looks like they are going to produce the a5100 and a6000 forever, but stop the a6300. The only confusing is between a6400 and a6500. I prefere my a6500 because of the IBIS and a better grip. I take pictures of landscape and architecture and not of people, cats and dogs.
Superb, don't know why TH-cam stopped recommending your videos, but doesn't matter cause I will never forget this channel. Really helped in finaliseing the decision to buy 3xA6400(2 for photo with 1st one with Sigma 16 & 2nd one with 56mm & 3rd one for video) instead of 2xA6100(photo work) & 1xA6400(video work). Please suggest an good macro extension tube for Sigma 56 f/1.4, also currently I am confused between Sony's 18-105 f/4 vs 16-70 f4 for shooting wedding videos with A6400. Also a good gimbal for that, previously did finalise A6100, 16-70, Boya BY-MM1 & Feiyutech G6 plus for travelling & wedding video work. But since, using S-log will be beneficial for proper color grading now finalised A6400. G6+ has limit of 800gms, now increased weight demands another gimball. Does power zoom helps a lot in video work?
I am upgrading from an a6000 to a6400. I shoot mostly video and even though i'd love the a6600 i can't seem to justify the price premium for the bigger battery.
Thats what I like about your videos, honest reviews. Thanks for this review, I’m a 6000 user and i want to get a newer camera, now i know that i can put out of the list the 6100.
I always appreciate all these electronic reviews, but as with most electronics it’s always a numbers game. If you save $200 you can buy the next level camera. But if you save $500 you can get the next next size up. If you throw even more money, you can potentionally shoot the next Avengers’ film. Lol Getting good gear is important, but sometimes we forget to create. You have to remember that a lot of the tools released now eventually become obsolete a few years later. I appreciate this video in particular because I learned a few more things that I didn’t know before between these two alphas. But it just convinced me more about getting the 6100 as a starting camera, specifically because I’m going to be working indoors with a more controlled setting. Still, this was a great video. Thank you!
I'm looking to upgrade my a6000 to a 61, 64 or 65. I prefer to adapt EF mount lenses but am curious as to how the new AF system would improve performance when using adapted lenses. Is Eye AF performing like a native lens when using adapters like the Sigma MC-11 or Viltrox EF-E? How is video AF performance too? Thanks for any input.
I have seen like 50 videos of you, for Sony APSC camera and video. I have a question for you @arthur R. I am planning to buy a6100. confused in between a6100 and a6400. I am video shooter. How much more dynamic range the HLG log will give if you compare a6100 video vs a6400 video. Please I need that answer from you.
Hey Arthur, I have had the A6000 now for 2 yrs. I have done too much photographic but now I am wondering if I should trade up. If you recommend that I do, should I choose, the A6100, A6400 or A6500? Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks
Excellent Review. Thanks . Now the Sony A6100 dropped in price by $150 more. So it’s $598 for 6100 & $898 for 6400. Is $300 difference worth it now? I’m using my Sony A7iii as my main camera . I’m looking for 2nd camera for gimbal work for my events work . Thanks in advance .
I regret buying the A6400 about 1 year ago. Today i would buy the A6600 only because of the missing IBIS in the A6400. I use mostly the sigma prime lenses and the sony FE 50mm1.8 (fullframe lens) and none of them has OSS at all, that is a real bummer. I know the IBIS from the A6600 isnt the best in the world, but better than nothing. With the A6400 and lenses without OSS, videos are horribly shaky. And no, i dont want to carry a gimbal around all the time.
feel you man,,, I sold a6000 a6300 & a6400 in order to buy a6600, best decision, it's especially good if you have or planning to have full frame in future 💪
After watching this video, i am absolutely clear about the differences between the two. Thank u so much, you are making awesome content man, keep going!

Hi Arthur, thanks for your great Videos. I just purchased the Sony a6400 for a trip to India, Could you let me know what program I should use to convert the Raw images. as I am stuck been a long-time Nikon shooter and have been using Aperture from Apple however this does not work with the sony raw images. Thanks, Paul
I honestly couldnt tell you. I dont shoot raw because the files are huge, cumbersome, and offer little added benefit especially when you are using Sony lenses. Someone else might be able to answer that for you though.
i need some advice please. I have a nikon d3100 with a 50mm f1.8 that i want to upgrade. I mainly do photography but recently i have been interested in video. I really want a full frame and i am torn between getting the sony A7ii, and the sony a6400 for my budget. So should o go full frame with old technology and video capabilities or crop with the latest technology?
I would get used a7ii just because of ibis, but a6400 has selfie screen & better autofocusing plus when using Sigma f1.4 lenses & 4k 24fps it will have full frame look
@@crismejeli2082 I bought an a6100 recently and a sigma 30mm f1.4. It was the perfect upgrade from a normal phone in my opinion. I found new at a good price and I would say if you are just starting photography mostly as a hobby, yes It is worth it.
@Phil Jones65 but those "cut down" and "low-res EVF" complain is only ever mentioned by those who has access to the better (and much more expensive) device beforehand. Without such access, mainstream guys will buy it because they know (for now) that no matter how good a phone, a dedicated camera for mature photographer is still better than phone. They simply compare it to a6000 and if they can be assured that the AF is evolutionary, 150 to 200$ upgrade over a6000 should be still reasonable.
Thank you for the information. Now I am sure to buy the 6400, its a better option than the 6100. I have a 6000 and i love all your videos about that camera.

I still don't see anywhere if upgrading from a6000 to a6400 worth it for still photography. Do you have an advice ?
Finally someone is pointing this out. I watched many reviews but none ended with this no-brainer verdict. In Germany the price difference is currently 80€.
I already did my upgrade, a6000->a6400. I don't do video but love the AF upgrade with the new camera.
How can you determine the speed of the shutter from the sound? If they both are 11 fps, that is their speed. Your perception of speed judging by the sound is ridiculous.
Otherwise a really good video 👍
Will there be any Video quality difference b/w sony a6400 vs a6600. Like dynamic range or sharpness??
I still use A6000 with lens 18-105, Auto-Focus dan burst speed is amazing.
You probably have the electronic front curtain shutter turned on which makes it sound slower as it only flaps once. If it's turned off, it flaps twice making it sound faster.
I agree, the a6100 should be $699 at the most.
They go on sale. I got mine with a lens, $745 with tax.
Waiting a week for black friday deals and I'll smash those affiliate links of yours. Happy to support a great content creator!!!
What's a black Friday sale?
@@nord7556 it's a weekend (Thanksgiving weekend) in USA where stores have a lot of products at a discounted price.
Matteo Sivilotti Yup, so will I. Looking for a sale on the Sony 90mm
Sony a6100 currently 649.99
@@davemunoz9742 6400 hasn't changed yet 😪
You gotta change the title, the price has gone down by $100-150
Price difference on amazon canada is 400$
Check how much the price is now in August 2020......$750

Should I be worried about the battery life in A6000 for photos only?
or
Should I consider the A6100 given the budget is close to $1000.
Upgrading from A6000, which one is best? 6100? 6400? or 6600?
a6600 of course, but a6100 is a fantastic choice too
how about EYE-AF in video mode in a6100 ?? - missing in a6400
In Turkey there is approximately 300 dollar difference between these two. What would you advise me?
just bought the a6100, will update soon about my experience
@@starnight930 sorry I forgot about this . So I got it and went a few times for shooting , I don't post to much photos but I have and Instagram were you can see some of the photos I took with it , it's @diogoconceicaoph
Also as far as I can tell its very good for its price and either in video or photo is very good, the auto focus is amazing
6400 has color profiles & weather resistance. Otherwise Identical w/ no IBIS? am I close?
I just got the a6100 because I got it for 589. I already have an A7iii so I’m using this for vlogging only pretty much. The difference was 300 dollars so for me it was worth it. I won’t be using the viewfinder much but really needed that flip screen and mic input. Totally agree if the difference was 150 dollars but found this on sale and jumped on it. Great videos man! Also have my original silver a6000 and another white a6000 modified for IR. 😆. Love Sony cameras!!
Do you have issues of overheating with A6100?
The difference in price is around $300 not $150 based off your affiliate links. I'm looking to get into this format, with stock lens its a considerable difference
a6100 is currently 649.99, is that price worth it?
The a6600 is extremely overpriced, damn Sony ain't getting my money this year !
😂🤣What about this year?
Both A6100 and A6400 should have been fitted with articulationg LCDs.
Hi Arthur, great videos I have followed your channel for a very long time, the quality is just getting better and better. Can I ask what hot shoe mount is that on the a6400?
Yes, here it is!: (on Sale with a 20% off coupon) so its $10.36 shipped! amzn.to/2qp147K
I’m upgrading my a6000 to the a6600 and can’t wait for it to arrive! Any tips for setting it set up and digging through the mountains of settings for video? I never got into video with the a6000 but it’s my primary purpose for the a6600
I don't mess with a bunch of settings. Honestly I think I change about 5 things and thats it. If there is interest I could post up a vid.
Thanks for your honest take on the 6100. I enjoy your way of presenting the information.
Bought the a6400 a month ago and COULD NOT BE HAPPIER. Had the a6500 and hated it. The a6000 was amazing for the $, but happiness settled on the a64.
Does a6400 has a flip screen??
a6100 a6400 a6600 have flip screens
Great comparison Arthur! I have the A6400 and love it!
I rarely do videography. But would click pics on a daily basis. So which one would you recommend me?
6100 or 6400 or 6000 or Canon M50
@ant billionz oh that was so funny
a6100,,, if you need better weather resistance then a6400, definitely not a6000=too outdated & iso performance is much worse I did several low light video tests, trust me
@@mirrorlessny Thanks a lot Buddy ✌😊
Does A6100 have 29:59 recording limit?
Does power zoom helps a lot in video work?
wow i really needed this video. I have struggled to make a decision between the 6300 the 6100 and the 6400 and this ultimately changed my mind. ty
I am upgrading from an a6000 to a6400. I shoot mostly video and even though i'd love the a6600 i can't seem to justify the price premium for the bigger battery.
I have a a5100 you better BELIEVE I'm upgrading to the a6600! Love your Videos! Keep up the good work!
That's a step UP!
Is the a6100 a plastic or medal body ?
plastic
Thats what I like about your videos, honest reviews. Thanks for this review, I’m a 6000 user and i want to get a newer camera, now i know that i can put out of the list the 6100.
By simple curiosity, were the shutter speed the same at 3:48 ?
Thanks for any input.
what lavalier mic did you use in making this video?
I have seen like 50 videos of you, for Sony APSC camera and video. I have a question for you @arthur R. I am planning to buy a6100. confused in between a6100 and a6400. I am video shooter. How much more dynamic range the HLG log will give if you compare a6100 video vs a6400 video. Please I need that answer from you.
noooo im looking at between the a6000 and the a6100... my Nex6 died this week... what do
you think?
Hey Arthur, I have had the A6000 now for 2 yrs. I have done too much photographic but now I am wondering if I should trade up. If you recommend that I do, should I choose, the A6100, A6400 or A6500? Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks
Excellent Review. Thanks . Now the Sony A6100 dropped in price by $150 more. So it’s $598 for 6100 & $898 for 6400. Is $300 difference worth it now? I’m using my Sony A7iii as my main camera . I’m looking for 2nd camera for gimbal work for my events work . Thanks in advance .
this video is very helpful. keep doing this kind of comparison video. thank you bro!
Hi Arthur, how is shutter roll on them compared to a6000? Thanks
After watching this video, i am absolutely clear about the differences between the two. Thank u so much, you are making awesome content man, keep going!
I'm looking to get into a little photography, I don't have a good camera now … just my Huawei Mate10 pro. Which is better for an entry level a6000 or a6100?
A6500 In the UK is £550.
A6400 is £950
A6000 is £350
Personally I'd grab the A6500. Depends on the price where you live though. I have the A6400.
a6100 is a stellar choice
Hi Arthur, thanks for your great Videos. I just purchased the Sony a6400 for a trip to India, Could you let me know what program I should use to convert the Raw images. as I am stuck been a long-time Nikon shooter and have been using Aperture from Apple however this does not work with the sony raw images. Thanks, Paul
I honestly couldnt tell you. I dont shoot raw because the files are huge, cumbersome, and offer little added benefit especially when you are using Sony lenses. Someone else might be able to answer that for you though.
How was your India tour ?
At 1:30 you probably meant mic in. Sony wants you to get an A6600 or an A7 to get headphone output.
Wat about getting a A7 Mark II instead of an A6400? Currently about the same price point and it supports all APC-C E-Mount lenses you own.
The only full frame sony with good autofocus performance is the A7III and beyond. Models prior are pretty slow/inaccurate.
i need some advice please.
I just got my a6100 yesterday an upgrade from my a6000
JQ Cee worth it?
@@crismejeli2082 I bought an a6100 recently and a sigma 30mm f1.4. It was the perfect upgrade from a normal phone in my opinion. I found new at a good price and I would say if you are just starting photography mostly as a hobby, yes It is worth it.
@@nocturneditz7970 Totally agree! The price difference here at this point is $400 CDN.
Jumping from a Canon to a Sony A6400... thanks for supporting that camera, for the price it's a good place to start. )))
hows the jump going?
Excellent review! Quick question: Now that the price difference is $300, what camera do you recommend?
Really enjoying your videos and this one is valuable for me since I'm still looking to buy into the Sony A6xxx series. Food for thought.
2:23 I wanna know where I can find that cold shoe adapter!
Upgraded from A6000 to A6600 yesterday! I was wondering if you're planning on reviewing it soon? And the 70-350mm G OSS
I still love my A6300 and have zero reason to upgrade.

maybe a new lens...
(sigma trio)
The only problem of a6100 is price. Should have been sold at a6000 price +150$ at most
@@jomsies that way your business will go bankrupt soon
@Phil Jones65 but those "cut down" and "low-res EVF" complain is only ever mentioned by those who has access to the better (and much more expensive) device beforehand. Without such access, mainstream guys will buy it because they know (for now) that no matter how good a phone, a dedicated camera for mature photographer is still better than phone. They simply compare it to a6000 and if they can be assured that the AF is evolutionary, 150 to 200$ upgrade over a6000 should be still reasonable.
Foto4Max in my country, the price of A6100 with kit lens is the same with A6400 also with kit lens. Crazy!
Thank you for the information. Now I am sure to buy the 6400, its a better option than the 6100. I have a 6000 and i love all your videos about that camera.
I upgraded from the A6000 to the A6400 a couple of months ago.
I have the a6500 and I love it. I don't think I have to upgrade any time soon although I would love a flip-over screen, that can be very useful. Great video, Arthur.
Great to see a comparison. I have the 6000 and have thought about an upgrade. Could you tell me if the 6400 can be set for a minimum shutter speed please.
