  • HVAC actuators…can’t be much worse of a job. In this video we tackle the dreaded JK HVAC actuators ( Recirculation this one is ) known for failure, as the ticky ticky is getting on our nerves. Not impossible but it will try your patience. Just take your time and it will be done !!!

    I thought it best to comment on the “actual” terminology for the actuator location after a few viewers pointed it out to me since the video went up..I REALLY did not want to do it again to correct video..as you know it’s a b^*tch to do…BUT nonetheless it’s ACTUALLY the recirculation actuator.

    Thanks for the video. Took me 20 min to complete the switch. Two things. I checked with the Lead Tech at Jeep to verify the door placement. He stated the new actuator would learn the position. It did. Secondly have a short and deep 7mm along with the hand wrachet. Made the job easy.

    Same exact problem! Solved with your video thanks for posting this, literally saved a lot of frustration and $250 from a repair at the shop. Got the part for less than $20 and a couple hours time, easy and done!

    Great video! Saved me a lot of time and money! Mine was not clicking but would not open. The small tool you suggested was great! I cannot believe I had not seen one like it before. Thank you for taking the time to produce this video!
    For those performing this task, the screws are Philips and small. I removed an electrical connection that was just below the lower screw which made it easier to access. It just has a couple of barbed plastic fasteners which come out easily by placing a flat head screw driver between the part that it attaches to and the side of the large electrical connection.

      A quick update to my recirculating actuator! I replaced mine in July as my comment reflects. We headed back down to MX shortly after I replaced mine and all was fine, until about a week ago. We started hearing the clicky clack then pause then clicky clack again. I pulled the glove box to have a look. It is opening then closing but it tries to go too far when opening and when closing. Has anyone had this issue? My concern is that it will now break the “shutter/door” as it is applying a bit of torque to it as it overextends. I am in Zihuatanejo MX and hope the Autozone here has the actuator. I should have bought an extra one in TX as they are a cheap part!

      Another update. It took me a couple of weeks to get the Dorman part delivered in MX via Amazon but it made it. I will say that changing this part a second time was easier than the first. I guess old dogs can learn new tricks! This time when I pulled the actuator off the shaft stayed in the recirculating door. I was able to get some small needle nose locking pliers in the tight spot and clamp down on it then pull it out. I aligned the new one then got it all back together and it seems to be working. I am not sure if to little board failed that is inside the unit or what caused it to try to over extend each direction. We will see if the Dorman lasts longer than the AutoZone version.

    I used the Dorman actuator for the glove compart and by the steering wheel and they never calibrated. Ended up breaking. Brought OEM from Jeep and works perfectly. Thanks for the video.

      I’ve heard a few say that. Very interesting. We have had zero issues with them. I did make sure they were clocked right though before install as they can be installed in a couple different positions and still slip into place.

    Watching other videos most people were fixing the blend actuator but my ears told me my problem is closer to passenger glovebox. I'm no mechanic, used to pay for oil filter changes. But I've decided to start doing all my own mechanical work to keep this thing running for a long time. Resealed rear differential gasket, replaced tensioner pulley, and some other minor things. Next is tire rotation, replace front shocks, breaks (for the 37s it came with) and the recirculation actuator. Thanks for helping pinpoint the location and those of us learning to take care of our own jeeps.

    Great Video! I should have removed the seat first and saved me probably 40 minutes and a bunch of aggravation. I was able to use a Craftsman right angle bit attachment with an extension to remove the screws from underneath while guiding the socket with my left hand. The hardest part, besides lack of visibility, was removing the 18mm seat bolts, but nothing an impact wrench couldn’t handle.
    Altogether, it took about 3 hours from setup to cleanup taking my time, with a Nun friendly vocabulary 🤣.

    Thank you for the video. Without a doubt the biggest pain in the a** job! Thank God I had the little round 1/4 inch ratchet that you suggested. Pick one up before you start this job if you don’t have one, I don’t see how you could do it without one.

    Loved the video, it was very helpful. We replaced the one on our 2014 Jeep Sport and I did curse a lot, luckily I did have one of those small finger ratchets, but my hands was way to large, I had to get my daughter with her small hands to get the back screw out, then back in. but now it's done and working like it is supposed to . so quiet.

    Amazing, I though it was the blend door on my 2012. After I swapped it out and tested it my heart skipped a beat when the clicking started again. wasn't sure how to get back to this one but thanks for showing the way. I guess I know what my plans are for tomorrow.

    Got it installed on my 2012. 100% need the finger ratchet and a deep well socket 7mm.
    Line up the new one and lift the vent door half way. Must hold position. We used a piece of plastic. Slides right on. Takes 1-2hrs.
    Pro tip. Have small hands.

    Thank you so much sir without your help would have never gotten it. I decided to leave the back top screw out, it doesn't have much rotational force so I think the front screw is sufficient. Makes it easier for next time hopefully there isn't.

    Thanks for the info great learning tool. Took the JK to the Dealer and the quote was $200.00 diagnostic fee, and $550.00 replace the actuator. Order the Finger Ratchet and went one step further and order a $20.00 endoscope that plugs into my apple phone. The endoscope took the guess work out of how and what to remove and made the install simple.. Part cost $28.00 at Auto-zone and in less than 1 hr done and no clicking nose. Works perfect.

    I watched your video and performed the task and all went well. I laid across the driver seat an used my left hand to remove the actuator while peaking through a speaker hole. I also stuck a light up into the hole to better keep an eye on it.

    Super helpful video. I was able to get mine fixed in a little over an hour and it went exactly as shown. I cheated - I'm too cheap to drop $30 on the actuator. I opened it up and the pin was sheared off like it shows at the end. I drilled the cover and the pin and put a tiny screw in to hold it in place. Fingers crossed that it holds up. This seems like a design issue, friends jeep had the same problem at about 100k miles. They ended up dropping a few hundred bucks for the dealer to fix it.

    Dude - thanks for the advice on the stubby wrench. Opposite issue - in Michigan 10 degrees hands frozen is a lot harder & more frustrating IMO. Rather be sweating than completely bundled up and toes frozen - hands frozen...lol

    1. Must have tool: Harbor Freight, PITTSBURGH Ratcheting Right Angle Multi-Bit Screwdriver Set, 8 Piece $2.99
    2. Disconnect the negative battery cable (under passenger seat for 20 mins.) to recalibrate the blend door actuator system.
    3. Do NOT drop the screw. You'll never find it again

    I am not able to get to the bottom screw with my gear wrench. There is a big connector just opposite the screw head. Any idea how to move or disconnect the connector. It has a big gray bar acrossed it the looks like it is some kind of release mechanism.

    We have been living with this problem for the past 2 years, we take the top and doors off and put the bikini top and tube doors on every year this time of year ( after the live oaks drop their pollen) we are in San Antonio... I was watering the grass last night talking to a couple of neighbors and the JK started talking... thump thump thump, the neighbors asked what the hell was that? it was 20 minutes after it was parked. I looked at it a year ago and was cussing without even attempting the replacement, I'm going to try and replace it tomorrow. I have a place to visit for your TH-cam channel around Christmas...

    Good video, I am about to tackle this. I reread comments about the door position. I guess I will have to find out for myself if you need the door in the up position or halfway or something else. Also not sure if its a 7mm deep socket or a phillips for the actuator screws.

      Ours used the 7mm screws. Also the actuator only goes on in one position…so to speak… it will orient where the door needs to be positioned. The actuator I purchased, positioned the door in almost the fully up or open position. Thanks for watching and GOOD luck to you. It will try your patience.

      Ok, just finished and I have the answers now. It took me 1.5 hours it looks like, but that included a couple of coffee breaks and moving tools and box fan on me. For the 2010, it was 7mm for the two side speaker screws, 8mm at the bottom for the speaker, and 7mm for the two actuator screws. I had a hard time getting the speaker out even, you pretty much need to slide and tilt it to get out. From there it was all by feel because I couldn't really see anything. I had a small ratchet that had a thumb wheel built in and that worked good for the front one. The back one was the hardest, mainly to get a straight position on the screw head. I used a thumb ratchet for that. You don't really need a long socket for any of these, but I had a 3/8 to 1/4 adapter on it. Now removing the actuator that took some force, or maybe it was the wiring harness keeping me from being able to pull it much. I eventually got it. I glanced at the old and new part and the marks seemed to line up (door in the up position), so I quickly put in the new while I had the feel for it. I put the front screw in first and tested it. As soon as I put the key in and air, the door went down fine. Tested a few times and it went up and down fine. So, at least for mine, it went in fine with the door in the OPEN position. After doing all this, I realized it failed in recirc mode (door open). I think if it happens again, I will just leave it like that, because we always use the recirc anyway. Mine never really did clicking, just started making noise, then failed.

    If you hear your blend doors randomly moving when your Jeep is off it’s because your hvac control module is bad. If it flashes every time you start the Jeep it’s an indication that the memory chip inside the unit is bad. It’s constantly looking for position of blend doors because of the memory chip. Hope this information helps you and everyone that comes across this video.

    I am currently doing this now and had to buy an OEM part. The aftermarket did not fix it for my JK 2013 my socket is 7 mm deep well .

      I have heard that some jeeps just will not take the aftermarket one. I don’t know the rhyme or reason as to what causes that, we own two jeeps actually and one of them I had to use OEM on. The other one aftermarket worked just fine. I just can’t figure it out.

    Thanks for the vid, it helped a lot. That little tool came in handy for the rear screw. I will admit, I did not put the rear one back in. Looks like the part has plenty of guide pins to hold it. The force is a twist rather than push. I tried to get it a few times and thought, how important is this screw to the repair?

    Hey, can you guys give me a specific part number on the recirculation actuator that I can order from Amazon? Most of what I'm finding are blend door actuators, not recirculation actuators. They look similar, but I don't want to order the wrong part.

      Apologies for the delayed response, but your question has led me on quite the expedition of countless sources to research…..having not had much definitive answers….I was FINALLY able to come across a post on the JK forums where I found an answer…..If leads me to learn that the “actual” actuator is the same part for all three positions. Tge blend door simply reuses the long arm attached to the actual blend door. ASSUMING I am correct in assumption you are after the one located just to the right of the steering column.     Once everything is out and ready for the new Actuator. Do you need to hold the doors halfway up? I hear people are breaking the gears, same noise with the install.
    What is the secret to locking in the replacement part? Thx.
    My Jeep dealer said it’s $1300 to fix. Vampires

      If I remember correctly….the door will be almost in the full open position….the actuator and the door will only go back together correctly one way…the actuator splines and the receiving shaft on the door, only want to line up one way…the new actuator should already be indexed and oriented in the correct position…should be no reason to turn the shaft if the door is in the almost fully open upright position.     Why are the actuators functioning when there is no activity in the vehicle ??? They just randomly start moving

      Yep.....its a weird thing when you walk out there and they are cycling....what the heck??...No clue.Im wondering if it has something to do with the HVAC control board which we are fixing to replace next....

    I got the tool for this just as you have and I can't even get this close to front screw. Lord knows I have done said some words and just getting the bolts out is a days job. Unless you have a 5 year old size hands it is no easy way to get to it unless you take your entire dash board off.. the wiring harnesses are in the way even stubby wratchets are too thick to get between the bolt and the harness to line it up.

      I feel for you. It was certainly no easy task. I did manage to manipulate the harnesses just enough to get it done. It it was definitely with quite a few explicitlives though.       The particular actuator I purchased had to have the door in the upright position to align the splines up correctly with the recirculation door…..before sliding actuator onto shaft in place.

      @@ALongLongWaytoGO The side view mirror hit the cowl. Wind caught it while I was closing it. I let the door go to get the wire harness inside and bam. I feel better now after a few hours of beating myself up about it. Going to try to again tomorrow. Wish me luck

      I wouldn't worry about those dings on the cowl buddy, every jeep jk on the road has them from the same mistake, shit happens. I bought mine with those dings, I was pissed off for a day or two cause I didn't know how I was gonna fix it, after everyone in forums telling me they did the same thing and that it's bound to happen eventually, I just ignored them😀

    This is why I insisted on manual door locks and windows. The more electronics, the easier it is to fail. Less complicated means fewer problems. Just sayin'

I walked out to my 04 Liberty with a dead battery from the electric door locks cycling on and off. Thankfully I had a manual transmission and could start it, rolling down the driveway. If you are happy with your situation, who am I to question it?
