Direct Source time: I played in Pro Tour Atlanta. I went 6-4 , if I had gone 7-3 I would have cashed. Some notes and observations to your coverage of the event. Sealed deck tourneys were very common at LGS back in the day. so while we did not know the card pool, many of us at the tour had a good understanding on how to play sealed deck. We did in fact get 5 lands to supplement our decks. Language as a barrier did not seem to be an issue. The European players have a great command of the English language. The players meeting did an excellent job of explaining the new mechanics. That said many people made play errors and it centered around flanking as it the -1/-1 was until end of turn. Phasing did not seem to be a problem. The issue of intentional draws was a problem and lasted into the pro tour Dallas qualifier cycle. Eventually it got solved and players had to be good at math to figure out if they could draw or not. PTQs for this event were sealed deck using ice age alliance. I won my qualifier in Sandusky Ohio around 3 am as we had to move the top 8 to a local judges house as the Legion hall had a hard close time of midnight. Incinerate was another burn spell in the set. Red was the best then green or white. White decks were skewed in power due to how good Serra Mesa was. Red also had a sorcery that put three goblins into play that had mountain walking. Great episode and I appreciate you taking me down memory road on this event. I had a great time at then event. Can confirm that Team Viking and Team Deadguy were full of great players and good people to hang out with.
True that. I remember playing sealed deck tournaments ever since 4th edition/Ice Ages, at least. We did a "release" event for mirage playing decks made out of a sealed deck an 2 boosters. Nobody knew the cards back on the day, the "card discovery" thing was one of the coolest things ever. We did the same for visions and weatherlight using mirage sealed decks as base. The 90ths were GREAT
Mirage as a set is one of my favorite when it comes to art. It has some really funky and evocative art. That cyclops is so crazy looking, and the flavor text puts it over the top. When I started playing and my brother’s friend gave me a box of cards, and I remember being enthralled by the art on cards like Grim Feast, Delirium, and Sealed Fate
There is nothing better than seeing Patrick hit em with the signature "bounce your guy untap draw attack for 4 land tourch for game" all in 1 breath at the end of Cedrics turn. Getting big "Price of Progress Fireblast" vibes.
We did a Mirage draft in 2016 when old sealed product was still reasonably affordable, in Europe at least. Opened a Canopy Dragon, P1 P2 got passed a Savage Twister so I was trapped in the most overdrafted archetype and went 0-3. It was still a great, wacky experience. Best card in the box was an Enlightened Tutor :/ Fun video which brings back memories, thanks for the great series!
Thx for covering my Game from that Time. If you Wonder why I played Teferie‘s Island … I had taken some swamps to be able to switch to black if Blue was Not working. Best regardd Frank Adler
i love how cedric is in the same shirt in the facts and gameplay sessions for continuity's sake and patrick just has a completely different outfit and haircut
I can 100% confirm that players were able to add 5 basic lands of their choice to their sealed pool.. I can also 100% confirm that it wasn't enough.. By a LOT.. To put it in perspective by today's standards, imagine you've managed to put together a pretty solid, aggressive R/G deck. It's got a nice, tight, low-to-the ground mana curve, a handful of removal spells, some cheap combat tricks, maybe even a bomb or two.. Now imagine throwing 4 Swamps in that MFer.. Good look trying to curve Jolrael's Centaur into Maro with THAT mana base..
Love you guys!! Been a fan forever!! Patrick is a player after my own heart, being primarily R/X Aggro of some type! I live in ATL and was at PT Atlanta!! That was about 1.5 years after I started playing.
Great video, very nostalgic vibes, I love it. Keep it up guys. Speaking about the games, I think Cedric could have won g1 if played the +2/+2 aura the first time, when he realize the mistake of playing it as an instant. Otherwise Patrick's deck looks better IMHO
Man, that going in cold factor was very fun. Nowadays you just can't do it, but it was good. I still do that in sealed deck tournaments like ore releases today.
Just looking at the decklists, both in blue and yet both somehow not having any of the COMMON rarity Memory Lapse, oh my 😄 Brilliant episode as always fellas!
Why do people still tout the lie about Long getting Justice to concede to a game where he had removed his only win condition? That entire Pro Tour (Paris - 1997) is up on TH-cam. He makes him think he has more than one Drain Life in his deck in game one by removing it from the game and then loses that game. This comes up again in game five when Justice thinks he has more than one Drain Life and doesn't remove it with Coercion because of the first game. At no point does Long get him to concede a game he couldn't win after removing Drain Life. He loses game one, gets Justice to concede to a double Prosperity hand after getting S. Resources and Prosperous Bloom out early, gets beat by early creature aggro in game three, combos off in game four, and wins game five when Justice doesn't take his only Drain Life to an early Coercion...then proceeds to be showboat Mike for ten minutes to remove his entire deck to get a 44 point Drain Life off and prove it's the only one in his deck.
I attended as a spectator - it was my first year in Atlanta - and I've got A LOT of stories from this one. Maybe the best is the local player who went undefeated through the first 5 rounds of the PT and then just...left. Only a couple of people (I'm not one) know why.
I LOVE gameplay episodes It would be really fun if the full pools had been saved so we could look at them with moderns eyes and armchair-quarterback the deckbuilding

What great insight from a champ.
This is the last vestige of Magic content that I consume, brought to us by the goats. Thank you.
Great comedic timing on the torches

The art on Cadaverous Knight is sick too. It’s such a metal looking piece of art
For someone who was never good at magic but has multiple ygo tops, this show never fails to make me feel like i know the game inside & out
"durdle until I draw Torch" is a winning strategy

This was so unbelievably fun to watch, I love anything you two produce together
What about OF? 😮
@@r4v4g3rwhat a weird thing to say you loser
@r4v4g3r Sign me up
Everyone loves anything these guys produce together

I love the comment about "getting the brooms out" - never heard that one, and now I want to find a way to use it.
“Uncle Sam. Undefeated at the Pro Tour” should be a shirt design
Love you guys!! Been a fan forever!!

The Brian W. comment cuts hard lol. I was at the Throne of Eldraine prerelease and played RB sac while choosing to keep Oko in my SB 😅
kaervaks torch in this format is like ja morant turning up to your rec league game
Great video, very nostalgic vibes, I love it. Keep it up guys. Speaking about the games, I think Cedric could have won g1 if played the +2/+2 aura the first time, when he realize the mistake of playing it as an instant. Otherwise Patrick's deck looks better IMHO
It’s nice to listen to you guys talk about the good ole days of Magic. I still love the game but I fell off the horse after the 2018 Dominaria set.
Patrick's face every time....😂😂😂😂
i loooove these tournaments analysis an games with these derpy decks. you guys made me laugh so hard. thanks guysm, appreciate it
Now this is truly Magic: the Gathering as Richard Garfield intended!
The winners at the PTQs that I attended were given a sheet that explained the mechanics that were coming. The new mechanics were not a surprise.
Nice! Can’t wait for 1997-2000 pro tours and worlds.
1997 extended necro!
And You better play the tinker mirror for 2000 worlds 🎉🎉🎉😂😂😂
Man, that going in cold factor was very fun. Nowadays you just can't do it, but it was good. I still do that in sealed deck tournaments like ore releases today.
This was well worth the wait!

100% accurate
1:18:24 From game 1 onward, I believed in Kaervek's Torch.
SAY HIS NAME AND HE APPEARS!
Flesh and Blood did a sealed GP where many of the higher rarity cards had not been spoiled yet.
Imagine playing this and then figuring out that torch is a common half way through the event
God i love this channel
The only way I think you could even simulate something like this insanity would be hosting a blind cube limited pro tour.
Patrick lookin good with the shaved head
I’m a touch sad that basic mirage lands were not used.
IMHO Mirage has some of the most beautiful basic lands. I like to use them over most other options.
Mirage Mountains and Plains are absolutely goated
Mirage swamp is heavily underrated, bob eggleton goes so hard
@@Leuber I've personally started using 7th edition foils, they're so nice.
not that the beta lands aren't awesome, but would really havee liked to see some mirage lands
16:25 Yugioh went the second way. While I like players playing the game during events, it does occasionally cause drama
"packing heat", idiom, ca. 1996: atlanta area slang for having the card kaervek's torch in your limited deck.
absolutely based take about magic being a better competitive game without IDs

1:06:42 Imo Black Firebreathing should be dubbed Mirebreathing.
I said his name, and he did appear.
Doesn’t regenerate remove attacking or blocking creatures from combat? 1:02:53
It does but only after lethal damage has been dealt.
so cool!
No mention of any of the Team Sped members as notable people attending is a big miss in my opinion
I LOVE gameplay episodes
It would be really fun if the full pools had been saved so we could look at them with moderns eyes and armchair-quarterback the deckbuilding
When is Cedric going to win the intro fight?
What song is that during game 3
I believe in the Torch
Not hating but it would be cool to keep the lands on theme. The ones you have are sweet.
black firebreathing obviously called "mirebreathing"
Jolt was a blowout back then because tapped creatures didn’t deal combat damage.
wait LSV. Nassif and PVDDR have more PT top 8s than Darwin Kastle?
Still commenting more for the sake of my goats
From The Canada 😅
SAY HIS NAME AND HE APPEARS
wym the election? nah i'm watching the newest resleevables tournament edition
Huh so that's how good fireball is in limited. Hahaha.
I believe in Joe Hendry
The presidential election can WAIT, it’s resleevables time ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
