11:30 I think a lot of people may know the "1996 World Champion" card simply because it always appeared at the top of alphabetical lists of cards. At least that is how I discovered the card while building decklists.
@@samc4741 I'm not sure you could fail to find it because the ability states that you need to have it in your library to activate. So if you activate the ability you need to find it to prove that you could activate the ability in the first place. If you fail to find, the activation would be illegal and you'd have to rewind the game state. At least that's my best guess of how that would work. There is a reason why they don't do effects from the library because they are rules nightmares (looking at you Panglacial Wurm).
The Fantasy Draft - Kai Budde issue is similar to Wayne Gretzky. At some point the Draft Leagues had to split Wayne Gretzky into two players. Gretzky (Goals) and Gretzky (Assists), because otherwise your draft was virtually guaranteed to beat every non-Gretzky draft.
Please note that there are quite a number of Homelands cards played in the top 8 - Arrows, Bears, Shade, mostly - without a deckbuilding rule requirement to do so (like in the first PT, 5 cards from each expansion). These cards were just good in the meta.
It's so funny going from watching Bosh's videos and finally coming here after seeing the ad and really enjoying the video and then seeing an ad to watch his channel. Y'all are awesome! Definitely a ton of fun to learn about championships from before I existed and how Magic was back in the day
Great series as always! One of the best channels on TH-cam. I think there may have been 2 small rules errors at 1:14:33. Patrick taps Sulfurous Spring for black for Drain Life but didn't take damage, though it wouldn't have been necessary anyway since he then Drain Life-d Serra Angel for 5 gaining 5 but you can't Drain a creature for more than it's toughness. Obviously not a big deal, just something I saw while watching the matches. Entertaining and informative as always!
They may have assumed, as I did, that Drain Life had been errata'd to deal X gain X for simplicity's sake. Turns out it wasn't, and this play did leave him with one extra life, which might have been critical in a game where he did in fact go down to one. I didn't see if Contagion was the third card drawn when he Necro'd for 3 after that.
I feel this way every single episode when they are in studio B. I always blamed it on my own misophonia until this video, when my wife turned to me and said: why is the music SO loud?! I'm actually a $10 Patreon supporter but have never wanted to voice my complaint since it's their show and who am I to say... but hearing someone else mention it, and then my wife, I gotta say: it would be super helpful and way more relaxing if we could just hear you guys shuffle and play. Nothing with a "beat", it's super distracting, especially since there are so many game actions that make an "beat" type sound (shuffling cards, drawing a card, slapping a card on the table, et al). It makes for a bit of mental chaos (for some of us). We never needed background music watching the SCG tour, and that was you commentating other people's matches, not being able to openly talk to each other across board! I semi-jokingly think you should run some background ASMR of an entire tournament room shuffling sleeved cards and fidgeting in their chairs and rolling dice, but probably some very soft instrumental music or nothing at all would be better. In my own opinion, the music in these episodes is too loud for relaxing/engaging with the game being played and/or listening to you two at the same time. If it's loud enough to cover Cedric's voice... that's worth noting. Appreciate all the content, love the episodes, the first bonus match was excellent as well. Cheers.
59:15. Try listening there if you want a specific instance. The song is Antoni Maiovvi going absolutely INSANE in a funky hyper-fast Stevie Wonder/Steely Dan solo. It feels like midi synth prog rock disco. This song plays over the entirety of Game 2 (starts at 55:50), and I would challenge you guys to listen to that and agree that you would watch another streamer or play a video game where this song was playing at this volume over the characters speaking. I will also offer you royalty-free instrumental music (for free) for the show if you're looking for something less obtrusive. So, not a complaint lodged without a solution offered. He also describes his own music on his bandcamp as: "it walks the line between retro-synth and horror soundtracks". He ain't lying!
Was really looking forward to this ep, as Mark Justice's book was one of the early ways I got into Magic, and he talks extensively about his experience in the Top 8 of this tournament in it.
These games are Brutal! Only us old timers know what it’s like to untap on like turn 4 with no lands. Or to get your lands randomly discarded away. 😅 And we liked it!!!! We didn’t whine when people killed our lands!
I have been playing Magic for 12 years and I learned about the 1996 World Champion card pretty early into my Magic career. I did lots of online research in my spare time and that card always stuck with me.
I miss the old days, that’s why I play 93/94 old school and premodern, too many mechanics and abilities on new creatures. That being said, can’t wait for bloomburrow draft. I still love limited.
7:21 The numbers don't seem to work out in the prize pool. When I add those numbers up, the total prize pool for PT Columbus is 125,000, but the total prize pool for the World Championship is 150,000. Should that total be 150,000, or are there mistakes in the place payouts?
Pretty sure the total is wrong here and should be 150 000. It's more likely to make a one digit mistake. I also googled it and found an archived wotc page where the prizes per rank matched.
This will alwats be what i feel magic is, this era was special, it had soul to the card design and flavor, its hard to replicate and despite the broken stuff it still felt more like a work of art
1:29:17 I'm sure you all probably looked it up after wrapping up filming, but in case you didn't: it happened a small handful of times in the NBA; Nuggets-Sonics 1994 was indeed one such instance and it was in fact the penultimate instance - it didn't happen again until 2001 when the Dirk/Michael Finley Mavs came back to beat the Jazz.
36:20 Why Dark Banishing over Terror? Was it that important to be able to hit Yotian Soldier and Phyrexian War Beast? Or were there other strong artifact creatures that we didn't see in the top lists
Good to see Cedric has figured out how to play Land Tax finally. Oh and you forgot to mention that they had to work with the weird requirement to include 5 cards from each set that was legal. That’s why you get some of the odd choices. It’s not that they wanted to play with some of those cards. It was that that had to and they were the best options out of that set.
Man, I really love watching your guys content as think both of you are great, very informed and your history of sets videos are arguably the best on TH-cam hands down! A piece of constructive criticism if I may. Im not sure if its the mics or you guys are just very loud card snappers but the constant loud SNAP when putting cards down or otherwise is highly distracting lol. After a while, its the only thing you hear. I mean that with no malice as I know how comments can sound just typed with no context or inflection. Just one very minor thing that I have noticed and others have also mentioned to me. Otherwise, keep up the great work! I look forward to the set history videos more than any other MTG video right now!
this has to been one my favorite episodes so far. Only thing i would complain about is the loudness of the music during the match, it makes it hard to hear what you guys are saying
15:45 I feel like the more useful opposite to blank card handicap is if there's 2 cards you're deciding between, play them as a dual-faced modal in play-testing & see which choice you make more idk if it's actually good, but it certainly teaches you more than putting 28 copies of a fictional card in your deck
you also *should* cheat when testing SB cards. what changes when Duress/Disenchant/Pyroclasm shows up. how often that happens is a question of math. but playing SB games without the hatecards is often just a waste of time.
There was a story back in the day that Changpeng would "accidentally" let his opponents see the Sleight of Minds during sideboarding, so that the opponents would not put the relevant hatecards in (mostly Gloom probably). Also, on the handicapped deckbuilding: Yes, it happened, but definitely not 6-12 cards. More like 4.
Additionally, in re handicapped deckbuilding, the idea was to play handicapped against the field and then add those 4 cards against the expected top deck.
Sick gameplay guys! Just a Q from a guy playing a lot of Old School 93/94 for the next times you run decks with Factories: They can pump themselves when blocking!
It’s easy to hate on the early non-interactive mechanics like protection but they played well in ABU. They started becoming an issue when they started printing more and more of the same so you could play up to 12 pro-white or black knights. Add the removal of the OG dual lands from the base set to make splashing more difficult and that was a problem.
Drain life can’t gain more life than the toughness of the creature. In game 4 Patrick drained the Sara for 5 and gained 5 life. He should have gained 4. This won Patrick him the game and match when he should not have. Patrick used contagion at 2 life to win the game. He wouldn’t have been able to play the contagion were it not for the Drain Life mistake.

I’ve pointed this out at least 2 other times on other videos, but when you are doing the games - having the face cams not line up to the direction that you are playing with the top down view is just awful. It’s such a simple fix too, just take the video for the game and rotate it 180* before cutting it up, now it’s fixed and I’ll shut up about it. Not addressing this and just letting it ride repeatedly is ridiculous though. If you wanna keep the logo the same, use the transform tool on the face cams to flip them horizontally, problem solved. Also the chip tune music was really loud, try like 10% volume so it’s a bed that the vocals can sit on top of instead of complete with. Still a good video lol
