David Krumholtz (Oppenheimer, Numbers) joins us this week to candidly share his experience overcoming thyroid cancer, the difficulties surrounding this disease while working in Hollywood, and how it was preceded by a nine month panic attack. Later, David talks about the validation he received from Christopher Nolan after landing a prominent role in Oppenheimer, his humbling first day on set, and a crazy story of how auditioning for this part evidently led to him becoming sober. We also talk The Santa Clause, pivoting on Numbers, and a horror story of a honeymoon.

Just beat my papillary thyroid cancer battle. Discovered I had it through an ENT. Not sure if we had the same cancer. Krumholtz is a class act and seems like a real dude, while still being a massive talent. Glad he beat this

I used to be a nuclear medical imaging technologist, where I did thyroid tests & treatments. I had done specialized brain imaging for the condition hydrocephalus too. And over the last 30 years first developed hydrocephalus after a car accident, and then later developed hypothyroidism from Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. I've come full circle today, even designing & directing my own brain surgeries & medical care.
I'm glad David Krumholz is doing well today, thanks in large part to his masseuse & others going the extra mile in their health work. The passion to help others, and a work ethic to do way more than the minimum is often what's missing in Healthcare today.

I could listen to him read the dictionary. The way he recites a story or event is that enthralling

I had/have parathyroid cancer with mets to esophagus. It has been crazy. A 9.5 hr surgery, removing some very large masses of cancer. Chemo brain, long haul covid exacerbation, synthroid, PT, occupational therapy, lost my voice for a year, and trouble swallowing.... I am just hoping I live long enough to complete the Final Fantasy 7 Remake games.
I am doing fine compared to most, and the medical professionals have been awesome. Being an actor in front of the camera while going through this... impossible.

Thyroid cancer is somewhat rare but it's a common cancer for firefighters.

I have pharyngeal laryngeal throat and voice box cancer in 2013. The doctor told me I won’t talk, I had already lost my voice and that’s why I got checkout and they founded the cancer and I had lost so much weight, the surgery was awful and the treatments. A week ago I had a CT scan for my shoulder I had a swollen lymph node and the doctor said it was ok. But they did found a growth in my throat and since my passed history. I need to see an ENT doctor I am already scared and stressed. I couldn’t get an appointment until February 23. This made it worse knowing that there’s a chance my cancer is back. They told me to keep calling for someone to cancel everyday and I been doing that got it changed to January 24. I was determined to get it closer and my appointment is tomorrow for the first consultation with the doctor. Some what relieved, I am glad that David got it checked out and he is doing good. This was a great episode love listening to the podcast every week. You Rock Michael!

I remember tweeting with David when he was being treated for this. I think (maybe) that he was in isolation for a while but it may have been He felt he was in isolation because of the depression.

I have no clue what the context was regarding the tweets and his isolation but there's a possibility it may have been due to his treatment. Thyroid cancer patients, as well as non-cancerous patients, receive radiation via oral radioactive iodine therapy (RAI). Since thyroid cancer patients receive quite a high dose they need to isolate themselves from people and pets/animals for about seven days post RAI. FYI, I'm a thyroid patient and I used to work in Nuclear Medicine where patients are treated for RAI.

I'm so glad David is okay. People can be dicks about any perceived imperfection. I think being rude to those who are overweight is, in some individuals' minds, the last bastion of acceptable prejudice. It isn't okay and I think the comments these rude individuals make says more about them than whom they are ridiculing. In short, people can be dicks and I feel your pain. Empathy is a good thing.

Show would be much better if you just put split screen and two faces on, cutting from you to the person is jarring and as viewer you are often focused on persons face speaking after he stops and then its cut off.

One of these days, the stars will align and David will be cast in a Film or TV Show alongside Oscar Isaac….
That aside, I’m really glad he’s doing better now. Cancer is a hell of a scare.
