    You forgot THE most important thing to understanding the ending: The post-credit cutscene. The one where Booker wakes up in his office, to find that Anna is in her crib in the other room. You had everything else right about the story, but this one is the missing piece. This means that after Booker is drowned in the universe where he would have accepted the baptism, all the multiverses where Comstock exists is ereased (The variable is removed). HOWEVER, since comstock is now removed from the equation, Anna is never sold to Luttece/Comstock, because Comstock doesent exist anymore to "claim" her. This means that Elizabeth will never exist because comstock was never there to bring her to Columbia. Anna however, does exist and will continue to do so since there is now noone to bring her to Columbia. The post-credit scene is what wraps up the story. The scene takes places in another main multiverse before the actual events of the game (where comstock now wont ever exist because booker let himself be drowned in "our" multiverse) and where, because of that, Anna is now present along with booker and no Comstock/columbia/anything to disturb this excact universe because its now gone. "Our Booker" broke the circle where he ALWAYS either chooses the Baptism or walks away, by choosing to die instead. He (and Elizabeth) gave their lives to rid all the other multiverses of Comstock.
    And that my friends, was Bioshock Infinite.

    That is probably why Booker has landed heads that many times.

    Easy explanation to the ending because some of the comments made it a bit more complicated:
    Comstock is Dewitt. Dewitt becomes Comstock when he accepts the baptism. Columbia only exists because of Comstock.
    Anna is Elizabeth. Anna only becomes Elizabeth when Comstock takes her from Dewitt.
    Dewitt comes up with a solution to stop the cycle of Dewitt & Anna -> Comstock & Elizabeth -> Dewitt & Anna.. etc. He says they should "smother Comstock in his crib"
    Of course, Comstock is Dewitt, but only after he is baptized. So (the) Elizabeth(s) literally kills Dewitt before he has the chance to become Comstock. Therefore Comstock does not exist, therefore Anna can not become Elizabeth.
    And such, the cycle is broken.
    In the post-credits scene, Dewitt wakes up with Anna in the other room. Lettece doesn't come for the debt, because Comstock doesn't exist to hire him. And thus, Dewitt can now live a happy and normal life with Anna.
    Columbia is destroyed. The cycle is destroyed. Comstock is gone. Lettece is forgotten. The world is normal.

    • @sl_hc
      @sl_hc 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Aidan Hunt thanks sir. But was Ana born before or after wounded knee? If she was born before, then when booker dies @ the baptism then Ana would just live with her mom. IF Booker is baptized and dies Before Ana is born then Ana would have never been born. So if booker stayed booker and ana was born after wounded knee then Comstock would come get Ana and maker her Elizabeth. Booker HAS to die in order for Ana to be safe. Just as long as she was born BEFORE wounded knee. whew😫😭the devs deserve a raise lol

I still cant figure the answer yet, so my theory.. the kidnapping event is a bootsrap paradox which explains event/thing that its origin is unknown.

    • @hydrothermalworm7778
      @hydrothermalworm7778 3 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      @@sl_hc @Chetan Tyagi Wounded Knee happened in 1890. In the final credit when booker goes to see anna in the crib the date on his desk is 1893. Anna is definitely under 3 years old here, meaning after Wounded Knee, after the baptism. This still fits because the only booker that exists now is the booker that never went to get baptised at all since both of those bookers died. Instead, the booker we see is the booker that went home to his child instead of going to baptism.

    • @christianmcnally4323
      @christianmcnally4323 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      But doesn't he have Anna after the baptism? Otherwise why would Comstock steal her? And if she comes after the baptism how does she exist if she kills him? If he survives to conceive Anna then so does Comstock. When Elizabeth kills Booker, she kills herself as well, that's why it's an infinite loop

  • @Arthur_url
    @Arthur_url 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2156

    Actually, there IS an explanation as to why Elizabeth have all this powers: Her finger. As a baby, we know that the portal closed when she was half-way through it, and her finger was cut in half. One part of her body was left behind, in another universe, and they are connected (read about the quantum entanglement theory to understand why), and by being connected through differente worlds, she could open gaps between them, and know everything about every one of them, technically, she was omniscient, but, when she was a child, the siphon was created, and her powers were heavily restricted, so she could barely open a few tears, and she wasn't omniscient anymore (but since she was only a child, she couldn't remember that), and when Songbird destroyes the siphon, all of her powers come back, and she becomes omniscient again. That's why she says that there's always a man, there's always a lighthouse, and there's always a city. :D

      Booker Wanted to kill Comstock the day he was born, Booker is Comstock himself so they went to the day he was being baptized as Father Comstock and Elizabeth killed that version of Booker
      This means Booker didnt die, but Comstock did and anything related to him after the day he was baptized.
      So in the end it was like Elizabeth, Columbia and Comstock never existed
      This implies Elizabeth dies with Booker since she never got to live in columbia
      It was like nothing happened after Booker dies drowned, he wont remember anything and he'll be back to the day the Lutece were supposed to take Anna away, but they wont since they're related to Columbia and Columbia doesnt exist in this universe anymore.

Elizabeth forces it to "let it go", because by that point she already made up her mind to kill herself along with DeWitt and a realities that he creates by choosing to become Comstock. The scene is about accepting your own death, that's why there're a calmness and a determination as well as an agony of letting go of the desire to not die. Beautifully written and beatifully animated and voiced.

    I found an explanation for Elizabeth's powers:
    On Monument Island you find a Voxophone recorded by Rosalind Lutece titled 'The source of her power'. "What makes the girl different?" she muses. "I suspect is has less to do with what she is, and rather more what she is not. A small part of her remains from where she came. It would seem the universe does not like its peas mixed with its porridge."
    This 'small part' is Anna DeWitt's pinky finger, which is severed when she's pulled through the collapsing tear from Booker's reality to Comstock's. By being physically present in two places at once, Elizabeth is able to travel between, and open doors to, other universes. At first the full extent of her powers are stifled by the Siphon (more on that later), but when it's destroyed at the end of the game she finds herself able to open infinite doors to infinite universes.

      Actually, the lutece twins ( who are not really twins but the same person from different dimensions ). Created a machine that could initially not open tears from scratch, but it could open them. They experimented on Elizabeth or Anna when she was really small and that's why she has the powers.

    • @TrueBlackJew
      @TrueBlackJew 9 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      batabatonica nooooooo KleptooN had it correct. The Lutece "twins" both were doing the same experiment but in two different universes and created a machine (like you said) that they Could see into and eventually Robert entered the universe Rosalind inhabited through the first tear they created together. The reason Elizabeth can open tears on her own, without the aid of a machine is because, as the Voxophone stated, a piece of Elizabeth/Anna is still left in her original universe. So because she technically co-exist in two universes, her tear ability comes from the universe hoping that she will find her way back to her correct universe and Stay There. The reason the Lutece twins don't have the same power is because they are two separate versions of the same person (ultimately different people) inhabiting the same universe where as Elizabeth/Anna is one version of one person inhabiting two universes.

      Meef Rad But why did the Lutece twins help Comstock/Dewitt when they knew that he would eventually betray them. Wouldn't it have been simpler if the never intervened with his life he would not have gotten the child and realized their true powers and none of this would have began. They would even have been angry because if they left him alone he would never betray them. Right?

    • @TrueBlackJew
      @TrueBlackJew 9 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      Hulky Smashy Without Comstock existing, Rosalind Lutece never discovers the "Lutece field" which is the ability to suspend the atom indefinitely in space (how the city floats). But before that, during her experiments with the atom, she discovers these shimmers, or tears, that we see Elizabeth able to see naturally. Through which she was able to communicate with an alternate version of herself; her male counterpart Robert. It wasn't until she met Comstock that she was able to get the proper funding to build a machine that could physically open that "shimmer," or tear, and allow one to physically pass through into another universe that is different, yet the same, as the one currently inhabited based on the laws of constants and variables. Through this machine she was able to pull Robert into her universe and introduced him as her twin Brother. But like Rosalind said in a Voxophone recording, the machine was only able to show glimpses into neighboring worlds based on the probability of the viewer's constants and variables. That's why the Prophet knew that DeWitt would come for Elizabeth one day and why he knew of the events that happened to Elizabeth & DeWitt while in Columbia (as shown by the gold engravings in the room directly before DeWitt & Liz finally meet the Prophet. Anyway, The Lutece "twins" were able to see all of the events of about to happen to them and subsequently allowed themselves to die because they ultimately had learned a way to beat the rules of constants and variables and live outside of time/space indefinitely. But they understand that there was a probability of it happening no matter what. Even if they choose not to discover the Lutece field, there is still a reality in which they DID, and that is THEIR constant for meeting Comstock and ultimately dying at his hands. They, just like Elizabeth, want to undo what they have done in EVERY world possible which means affecting the outcome of the times that Booker does go to Columbia, as illustrated in the game by Booker flipping the coin and getting Heads over 100 times.
      Long story short, if the Lutece twins don't get involved with Comstock, they can never meet each other or discover the technology to make Columbia float. If there is no Columbia, then Comstock needs no "seed" to sit on any throne. Aka he doesn't need to steal a child from himself. But because Comstock spent so much time hanging around the machine with Rosalind looking into what he believed to be the absolute certain future (and who knows, maybe he even tried jumping worlds a few times) his genetic traits "dissipated" (Rosalind's words, not mine [see Voxophone recordings]) leaving him sterile (or probably just lowering his sperm count to an unhealthy level for a man of his age). So he convinces the Lutece twins to find him a world where he isn't Comstock and actually has a child. And here is where the events of the game are set into motion because the Lutece twins choose Booker DeWitt with baby Anna. In the game you see it's Comstock who's is physically carrying Anna from Booker's world back to the world with BOTH Lutece twins and the machine fully operational (supposedly in Columbia). Who knows how many times they did that and failed before finally stealing Anna without killing her (like in Burial at Sea Ep.1). So that could be another reason that Comstock is sterile; from physically entering different worlds. But it's the Lutece twins' decision to help Comstock acquire a baby of his own blood (technically) and by doing so they seal their own fate to die by Comstock's hands because they now know too much dangerous information about him.
      Hope this helps!

    You missed one important part.
    The Luteces' motivations were much less, or the very least not just, about revenge against Comstock for killing them. If you listen to their Voxophones, it's expressed Robert felt bad for what he did. Rosalind didn't see much of a point in dwelling on it... "What's done is done. Whats done... will be done." But Robert wanted to make things right. So, he told Rosalind, either she helps him or he will part from her forever. Never wanting to be away from him again, she agreed to help.
    (Voxophone: An Ultimatum)
    "My brother has presented me with an ultimatum: if we do not send the girl back from where we brought her, he and I must part. Where he sees an empty page, I see King Lear. But he is my brother, so I shall play my part, knowing is shall all end in tears."
    (Voxophone: what's done is done)
    "Our contraption shows us the girl is the flame that shall ignite the world. My brother says we must undo what we have done. But time is more an ocean than a river. Why try to bring in a tide that will only again go out?"

    Seems like after the choice to be Comstock or Booker was made, comstock went on to find the Luteces, Booker went on to have a baby, and after Comstock wanted a baby of his own, he traveled to Booker's universe to buy his baby. After that, Booker had to deal with his regret for 20 years while Comstock lived on to raise Elizabeth. After Comstock betrays the Luteces, they give Booker a chance to get Anna back, as a way to get back at Comstock.

    There's a couple things you weren't quite right on. The Lutece's didn't wipe Brookers mind, or do anything to make him think there was a debt. Bookers mind did that it's self. It was creating memories and a backstory itself in order to cope with changing universes. There was no debt past the one 20 years ago, but his mind used those memories to create these new ones. Also, he wasn't blackmailed or otherwise tricked into selling Anna, although he tried to take it back after the fact, he agreed to it willingly in exchange for Comstock to pay off all his debts. The Lutece's aren't using machines to do what they do, at least not anymore. They were murdered while using the machine, which caused them to not die, but also theyre not really alive, like Lady Comstock. Now they're sort of like ghosts that can drift through Universes.
    As for Anna's powers, the reasoning isn't super well explained but, she can control tears because she exists within multiple universes at one time (Since her finger is in one, while she's in another). Existing in multiple universes means shes linked to multiple universes, and she uses that link to pull and push things through the veil. But I mean.. Its just a game, and it just doesn't make that much sense.

    Having a constant in the story is absolutely genius. The screenplay writers knew that without a constant, the multiverse theory would spiral out of control. Relying on an unfinished scientific/philosophical theory as a driving point for the story is pretty risky and could end up ruining the immersion defeating the purpose of the story. By forming the multiverse theory from the baptism makes the entire thing so much easier to understand. It's simply a beautiful story about a father who's willing to do anything to get his daughter back :)

      D. Pedro II I found your comment and it is exactly how I see this game. It’s not a bad game, in fact I actually am very entertained. This does not excuse the poor storytelling with placing shortcuts into the plot. If a piece of media utilizes a scientific theory or law then it’s lazy to place your own spin onto it. For me it’s basically textbook plagiarism, bear with me, in that something is taken and adjusted to the will of the person and placed as its original name except with a different author. For example, if the theory of gravity is taken and adapted to be that a Godly being is actually placing a force on the world and is stamped as gravity. Maybe I’m a little too harsh on it but it just seems lazy in my opinion. I prefer a simpler story with less suspension of disbelief.

      Actually it only happens about 150 times, as Robert Lucete keeps coming back to get Booker whenever he fails (you can see how many times they tried on the board that Robert is wearing at the coin toss). The first time he succeeds is when you (the player) manages to beat the game. So when you do that, you not only save Anna/Elizabeth from a cruel future in which she becomes a heartless warmongering tyrant, but you also release the Lucetes from their burden of having taken part in the inter-dimentional kidnapping. Robert Lucete, being a man of high standards and morals cannot rest in his quantum ghost state until he fixes that sin he made long ago and this is why he tries over and over, every time Booker dies or fails, to bring him back. In a way, the Lucetes are your save-game system both figuratively and literally.
      Imagine being the Lucetes and having a karma dept of setting in motion millions of realities where your actions lead to a catastrophic war. No one could live with that dept. They knew that Booker would be the only one that would have the drive to rescue his own daughter and possibly succeed.

    Finally decided to beat this on 1999 mode in the Bioshock Collection. Years later & I still fucking love this game. As much as I would like so much to have another Bioshock game, If 2k decides to continue the series, i do not think it's physically possible to top this one. However, the BEST part of this game's ending is in the credits, when it's revealed that possibly, in a single reality. there is a Booker who didn't trade Anna, & thus raised her as his own. I don't usually get attached to characters, but man, this gets me every time...

      actually, the end credits scene is a result of the ending. anna is always separated from booker, because it is a constant in every universe, just like how every time booker flipped the coin, it landed on heads, a constant in a sea of variables. but now that comstock is dead and can no longer take anna (because drowning booker killed comstock, so comstock would never be "born"), booker, with no debts to pay to comstock, rasied anna as his own.

    It's confirmed on the Bioshock: Infinite wiki that Elizabeth has the ability to create tears because she lived in two different universes when her pinky was severed. The baby in one universe, and the finger in another. Because she was in two universes at the same time, this allowed her to travel between them, and create tears with other universes.

    Elizabeth has her powers because due to her pinky getting severed going through the portal with Comstock, she violates a fundamental property of the universe, you can't be in two places at once. The lady Lutesse even leaves a voxophone note about it, "Apparently the universe doesn't like having peas in its porridge".
    As for the ending, it's not really an infinite loop, if you sit through the credits, you are rewarded with a scene where Booker is back in his office back before he ever decided to sell Anna/Elizabeth, all the gambling stubs being conspicuously absent, having apparently woken up from a bad dream, and you navigate him over to Anna's crib, where the game cuts to black as he peers inside. This is reference to the Schroedinger's cat thought experiment that ties into parallel universe/multiverse theory, and leaves the ultimate fate of the baby and Booker up to the viewer.
    Likewise, the grown Elizabeth's fate is also left up to the viewer, as she didn't go to the final baptism/drowning with Booker (although wearing the same dress, the one that does is missing the little pendant on the choker of the dress with either the cage or the bird, something that doesn't escape Booker's notice, as he is audibly puzzled. It's possible she either vanished or is still wandering the multiverse.
    The Lutesses are likewise entangled with the fabric of the multiverse like Elizabeth is, that's how they keep appearing and disappearing, they're like Time Lords and TARDISes all rolled into one from their exposure to the tears, they can go to any universe, any place, any time, that they want. As they are really one person, that's why they tend to finish each other's sentences and act in sync, they're two sides of the same coin. It's also they who killed the guy Comstock sent to the lighthouse.
    It's a brilliant game, and it really requires you to think and use your own judgement in order to get all the loose ends tied up.
    It's happening, it has happened, it will happen.

    The story and most of the plots are easy to understand, all you have to remember is:
    1. Throw logic out the window.
    2. Time AND space are a factor in the story.
    3. Booker is both the protagonist and the antagonist.
    4. Elizabeth is Booker's biological daughter but in a way also Comstock's.
    5. Everything works out in the end due to changing 1 crucial event in Booker's timeline (which cause a paradox forcing all universes to be altered).
    6. Elizabeth can do what she does because she's the impossible girl (Dr Who reference), she exists in 2 dimensions AT THE SAME TIME.
    7. Booker gave up Anna/Elizabeth because he thought it would be better for her (ask yourself why does a parent give up they're own child for adoption?) and he would be forgiven of all his sins. Obviously he regretted it moments later after the deed and chased Latece and Comstock to that tear where Anna was taken away.

      So, since Elizabeth's pinky was cut off, leaving her in two separate universes at once, what happens when the severed pinky, which should have died after a while, decayed? Turned into nothing? Would she lose her powers then?

    • @ArthasMenethil96
      @ArthasMenethil96 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kryptic Studios Corp (5) is just flat out wrong.

      Pseudo Lain
      Actually based on the story when all the different Elizabeth's appeared and Booker drowned then all the of them disappeared this clearly stated that every universe had been changed by altering this one event. Funny thing about time is that if you could go back and change things their are some things that can't be changed or else PARADOX.

    So that means
    Universe 1: Commstock
    Universe 2: Booker
    So Booker got to the babtism after wounded knee were both universes getting created, universe 1 were he accepted the babtism and universe 2 were he declined it. Both universes were playing at the same time. But one day Commstock from universe 1 got to universe 2 because of the women version of letuce and stole Bookers child and got back to universe 2 with Anna (Elizabeth). One day the Letuce twins opened a tear from universe 2 to universe 1 to give Booker the chance that he can get his "grown up" daughter Anna (Elizabeth) back to his universe 2. After Booker killed Commstock on his airship he got a nosebleed because he killed himself (the Commstock version of him) like he got a nosebleed were he was the dead hero of the Vox. After all of this Booker had the plan to kill Commstock before he was allive, not knowing he was Commstock so Elizabeth showed him that he has to kill himself to make everything normal again. And because he killed himself by getting drowned the whole future changed so the Elizabeth's that were "born" after the babtism disapeared. I hope i this is right, if not then please correct me :)

      he got killed as he was about to take the baptism again, which elimenates any future of Commstock, and thereby also any future in which Commstock comes to take the girl from Booker. Now im not sure if anna was conceiver before or after the baptism, but I believe it was before. therefore meaning a universe will exist in which Booker will have Anna, and not live 20years of regret because he gave her away to his alternate self, but instead possibly life happily ever after, the two of em. He wiped away his dept (His guilt of giving her away)
      Correct me if I'm wrong, cause this ending also left me quite fuzzy :p

    DeWitt is baptised - Turns into Comstock - Builds Columbia (Floating city) - Needs an heir to hes throne from hes own blood - Cannot have a child - Goes into a dimension where Comstock was never created, he wasn't baptised, so he did have a child (Anna) - Comstock somehow made DeWitt go into debt and the debt can be paid off with he's child - Now Comstock has an heir and DeWitt is left full of regret as Comstock is back into hes own dimension, where he was baptised and built Columbia.
    After 20 years, the Leuteces feel they did wrong, and they go BACK to the dimension where Comstock was never born and stole Booker's child, teleport Booker into the dimension of which he actually was baptised to get Anna (Which is all grown up and now is called Elizabeth) back to him.
    The Booker DeWitt world is quite simple, he was never baptised after Wounded Knee, he never built Columbia, never became a prohphet, lives on to have a child and quite a straight forward life. - but the problem is that he will ALWAYS meet Comstock because that universe of Booker deciding to be baptised always exists, which leaves us with the constant of Comstock making Booker have a debt because he needs a child heir of hes own blood but cannot have a child - steals hes "own" child just from Booker's universe where he was never baptised, so the same constant storyline has to exist. Booker will always have debt, Comstock will always need a child, so inevitably Booker will always find himself after 20 years alone meeting the Leuteces with the chance to go to Columbia to redeem himself and get Anna back, and Comstock will always have to face Booker in he's journy. Booker's journy to another dimension for Anna is inevitable just because the Leuteces will ALWAYS come to Booker to revenge on Comstock.
    Hopefully this will shed some light for anyone who wants a deeper, in writing explanation.

      I liked Infinite the most because it actually had characters that developed and interacted with each other. The other protagonists Jack and Subject Delta never spoke (it made sense for a Big Daddy but Jack spoke once and then never again) and as such all the interactions were one-sided, mainly the antagonist insulting the protagonist as he doesn't care and progresses either way.
      Booker actually shared his thoughts and emotions. And unlike Elenor I could feel the bond that grew between Booker and Elisabeth. Speaking of, Elisabeth was done excellently, as she actually supports you throughout the gameplay instead of being a mere nuisance. I especially liked the DLC and how tgey tied Rapture and Columbia together.
      The story is too complex and full of plotholes IMO but atleast it has a story worthy of caring about.

      +benjamin allenson No, because since Elizabeth is a girl that is raised in columbia. If columbia is destroyed by killing the brooker that chose to be baptized ( comstock), then Elizabeth cant exist. thats why the multiple versions of her die. Also, why booker dies, it doesn't mean that OTHER versions of him where he does not accept baptism die. So since only one part of him is dead ( the one that chose baptism) then the one that chooses to not accept the baptism is alive. That booker is still alive, along with his daughter Anna that hasn't been taken from him ( b/c comstock is dead). The booker also does not have the debt, because there is no need for the luteces to retrieve the girl. The reason why there is a repeat, is because before, the constant was that booker would always try to get the girl, but failed. However thats broken b/c columbia doesn't exist.

    Comstock is not older than Booker. They are the same age... hence the baptism for both happened at the same time for the same person. If you listened to the voxophones, Rosalind Lutece says that the cancer in Comstock (which is killing him and also rendered him sterile) is somehow advancing his aging process. This is why Slate recognizes Booker, but not Comstock... Slate comments on how Booker was at Wounded Knee, and not Comstock, when in reality it was the other way around. Slate just doesn't recognize Comstock with his advanced aging and new name. Comstock *was* the "hero" of Wounded Knee he claimed to be, but nobody believed/recognized him with his new name and appearance.
    Also, Booker's journey isn't about paying off his "debts." The game opens up with a quote from Robert Lutece's "book" about how the mind will create memories when confused. When Elizabeth is explaining Booker's past, and how he turns into Comstock, you see Robert open a tear to bring Booker into Comstock's universe. When Booker enters this tear he collapses and there's some quick banter between the Lutece "siblings" which ends with Rosalind commenting on how it's amazing that Booker is still alive, although confused, and Robert stating that it was expected because _he_ did it. Essentially, when Robert crossed into Comstock's universe to be with Rosalind, he went crazy too (much like the characters/soldiers that died in the game and "transferred" universes). Having two conscious minds in one body is confusing and disorientating, causing inconsistencies in memory... causing the person to create memories out of this confusion. This is where Booker creates his mission. He knows it has something to do with "give us the girl and wipe away the debt" but he's forgotten about Anna since she never existed in the Comstock universe. This discontinuity causes confusion within his mind, so he makes up a mission given the details he has. It also explains why he doesn't remember what happened to Elizabeth's pinky, even though Comstock remembers.
    Also, the Lutece "siblings" get their power from "existing" in multiple universes at the same time. The voxophones explain how Comstock got Fink to sabotage the "siblings'" machine to murder them. But, in reality, it only scattered their bodies throughout space and time. This existence in multiple universes gives them the ability to traverse into the realm outside of space and time... the area with all of the lighthouses. Similarly, Anna undergoes the same thing when she leaves her pinky in one universe, and travels into a different one. This "existence" in multiple universes gives her the ability to travel outside of space and time like the Lutece "siblings."
    And, finally, I don't think Booker is stuck in an infinite loop. I think the coin flips represent other versions of Booker, from other dimensions, that have failed. As Old Elizabeth states, "Booker" has tried several times to save her and he always fails... and the note in the lighthouse that says not to "disappoint us" makes me think that other versions of Booker have tried to save Elizabeth, but have failed and become disappointments to the Lutece "twins." That is where the tally marks for the coin flip come from... constants and variables. The coin constantly lands on heads, but the variable is "Booker" (different ones from different universes) and his choices that either lead him to victory or failure.
    Another purpose to the coin flip is to illustrate an important detail about Booker and perspective. When you find out that Chen Li has been killed and the Lutece "siblings" show up, they go through this banter about "what do you see." Rosalind says she sees tails while Robert says he sees heads. They then explain that it's all a matter of perspective, and that they're really looking at the same coin. At that moment you think they're talking about Li being dead in one universe and alive in another, but it goes deeper than that: they're talking about Booker and Comstock. From one side of the coin (universe) he's Comstock, but from the other side he's Booker. This is important because it explains why Booker must die at the end.
    You can't have tails without heads... If you get rid of tails, you have to get rid of the whole coin since heads and tails are one-in-the same. And, since the choice of either accepting or rejecting the baptism creates two dimensions (one with Booker, and one with Comstock), Elizabeth has to kill Booker before he makes that choice. Sort of like a tree: You can take the time to cut off each branch, one at a time (which would take forever since there are "millions and millions" of universes with Comstock), or you can cut the tree down at the trunk... before it starts branching (before these choices are made). This is why, when Booker says, "I am both" she drowns him. At that moment he is the trunk, and the only way to kill all Comstock variants at the same time is by killing Booker before he makes the choice to either create Comstock or not. This means that Comstock's universe never existed, and Comstock never existed.
    Sadly, since Booker and Comstock are different sides of the same coin, Booker must also die... which takes me to the scene after the credits, and another theory...
    *This is the start of my theory. Previous is what I have from the game, but after this line, everything is based on how I interpreted the ending.*
    A lot of people argue about the small clip after the credits: Is Anna in there or not; did Booker sell her or not? This is what everyone seems to be arguing about, but I pose this: *it doesn't matter*. That's not the point of that scene... The developers created this scene to show you that *Booker is still alive*! This means that there is the potential for Comstock to still be alive too. But how can this be?
    My hypothesis is that, before going to the river for the baptism, Booker made a choice (and subsequently created two universes): to go to the river or not. We're only interested in the one where he went to the river because that created Comstock. But what about the Booker that _didn't_ decide to go to the river? The drowning wouldn't have affected him, right?
    But there's still a problem. By not going to the river to be baptized, Booker still has to live with his guilt from Wounded Knee (constants) and he could use that guilt to turn into another form of Comstock, just in a different way (variables).
    Now, I'm going to pause there and talk about the gameplay... when Elizabeth takes you to Rapture to kill Songbird, she turns around and talks about the bathysphere. She says it's another type of "door" and you both get in, Booker pulls the lever, and you go to the surface... but wait. In the first Boishock we learn that the bathyspheres are locked to Andrew Ryan's DNA, and nobody can use them except for him and Jack (who is Ryan's son/clone). So why can Booker use them?
    I pose that this alternate version of Booker (that decided *not* to go to the river) caved in to his guilt. But, instead of becoming religious to atone for his sins, he threw out religion. This gave the power-hungry "Commstock" the ability to get past his "sins" and focus on feeding his maniacal and controlling personality, and Andrew Ryan is born with the ideals that morality comes from within and that man shouldn't listen to the church (or government). He goes on to create a utopia (much like Columbia - constants) under the water (variables) and he calls it Rapture. He also creates people/things that are similar to Columbia:
    -Big Daddy units who are men bonded into suits to augment their abilities, like Songbird was. Also they protect the Little Sisters the same way Songbird protected Elizabeth.
    -Dr Tannenbaum who creates and experiments on the Little Sisters the same way Dr Lutece "created" and experimented on Elizabeth.
    -Little Sisters who wear blue dresses, have blue eyes, and black hair... just like his lost Elizabeth.
    Again, this version of "Comstock" wouldn't have died when Elizabeth(s) drowned Booker at the river since his origin never even goes to that river. It would explain why Booker is in Rapture an the eve of its downfall (DLC), and why the Booker we're familiar with (in the Infinite universe) could use the bathysphere to get to the surface. It also explains the ties with this game and the other two games (other than the light houses and the brief scene in Rapture), and why Andrew Ryan hated the church and government so much.

And the light no their chest changes colors like the Big Daddy/Songbird/Big Sisters. That's kind of stretching it, but that's the best I can come up with other than saying they're simply a new character for a new game...

    the coin thing is easily explained: every single time the lutece have tried to bring Booker to Columbia to finish with Comstock, he goes in there and throws the coin. I think I remember, near the start, Elizabeth saying she gained her tare powers through reading books (because she had so much free time). By this you can assume these books were given to her by the Luteces (due to them being the only two who know how to do it). So I guess you could say it is most likely that the Luteces "trained" her, as you said.

    Okay i'm going to write my understanding of the video and the ending of the game on the whole below. I'm not attempting to replace the video i just need to write it down so i understand it myself. Put it in my own words you know? Anyway here we go.
    Imagine one universe. Booker DeWitt exists as a soldier and fights against the boxer revolution in the battle of wounded knee. Directly after the battle he comes to the baptism area (where Elizabeth/Anna kills you in the end) and chooses between being baptised or not baptised. At this point the universe splits into two main sub-universes: One where booker refuses to be baptised and stays as Booker DeWitt and one where he accepts the baptism and becomes Zachary Comstock. I'll go over each timeline and how they tie together.
    *Comstock*
    As Zachary Comstock you go and build Columbia with the help of the Lutece twins (the people who give you random choices throughout the game and row you to the lighthouse). Being very adept and well versed in the ideas of quantum mechanics the twins can do two things. First they make columbia a flying city instead of a non-flying city. This is said at some point in the story. Secondly they design a machine that opens tears. After a time Comstock begins to want a daughter and requests the Lutece twins' help. They open a tear into Booker DeWitt's world (the one where he refused the baptism) and take his daughter Anna. They steal her through a tear that is shown near the end of the game and Anna's finger is chopped in half as Comstock takes her through the closing tear. Booker lives with the regret of selling his daughter, then not being able to take her back when he backs out of the deal, for 20 years (reference is the scene where Anna's finger gets cut off. He yells "Hey the deal is off" showing that he sold his daughter but doesn't want to any more). Meanwhile Comstock becomes angry at the Luteces and they have a falling out. They leave Comstock's world and everyone believes them dead but they actually enter booker's world. They come to him and ask him to "find the girl and wipe away the debt". This is to convince him to go and save his daughter who they believe needs to be saved from Comstock as their interests are no longer aligned with his. So onto Booker's line. Keep all that info in your head while you read this bit.
    *Booker*
    So we're back at the baptism only booker refuses the baptism. He remains booker dewitt and goes home. However Comstock still exists in his own universe and he comes to take booker's daughter with the Lutece's help (as previously shown). He is then prompted by Robert Lutece to come save his daughter who he had previously sold to Robert Lutece so Comstock could have her. So he goes and steals Anna. So you go through the Bishock Infinite story playing Booker's line. You eventually get to Comstock and kill him, believing it to be done. However Anna/Elizabeth then leads Booker through his memories so as to stop Comstock from ever being created because she can see the cause of it all behind the millions of doors. They eventually loop back to the beginning of the split in the universes, at the baptism. The story is explained throughout this time with the little scenes but unless you know all this it is quite hard to follow. Anyway they get to the baptism and Anna/Elizabeth explains in a different universe he accepted the baptism (That universe being the one they are currently in) . Upon hearing this the priest guy who is baptising you says "what name do you choose for yourself". One of the Anna/Elizabeths say "he is Zachary Comstock". The other says "No, he's Booker Dewitt". At this point Booker realises the truth and admits it to himself by saying "No, I'm both". The Annas/Elizabeths then proceed to drown you instead of baptising you and the universe where Comstock exists is never created. Booker is then returned home and finds Anna in her crib or at leas this is alluded to by the baby noises and Booker saying "Anna is that you?". Roll credits
    A very intricate and complex game, with an incredible story that was both filled with action and laced with emotion. My favourite game that I've played to date, primarily because of it's fantastic story. Thanks for the explanation, and helping me wrap my head around the whole thing, uploader. Skoljor well done. i agreed with most of what you wrote, but not this line 'Booker is then returned home and finds Anna in her crib or at leas this is alluded to by the baby noises and Booker saying "Anna is that you?".' my interpretation is that our booker drowned in 1912 and thats it for him. the booker after credits lives in 1893 as shown by the calender on the table in front of him, i think this booker is like a third booker in a third dimension, and i would like to think anna is in the crib and he would live happily after with her in this dimension. thats just my own idea and wishful thinking i guess haha:)

      oliver swithin I took it as he reset his own timeline back to the point before comstock, therefore before anna was stolen. So in dying he literally gets a second chance at life. I think that Elizabeth/Anna is able to open tears between Universes because she exists in two separate Universes that are on different continuity branches. The fact that she lost her finger in one Universe and lived her life in a different one transformed her into a physical bridge between Universes. I think a clue could even be found in the way that she open reality tears, she spreads her hands with her fingers outspread.

      thank you max I just watched this to see if I connected all the dots and was about to comment on the not knowing how Elizabeth obtained her powers I would also add that it is the voxophone from Lutece stating 'It would seem the universe(s) does not like its peas mixed with its porridge' to reemphasize your explanation.
      ps Bioshock Infinite in my top 5, along side the original :)

      michael burgum I mean, thats like saying, how did the little sisters in 1 and 2 have powers. Because to get Plasmids, you take it from a little sister or be nice and they give it to you. Tenebaum was the scientist who designed them. BTW, they were also taken from their homes to be brought Rapture.
      So Luctese is just another Tenebaum in another universe.

      comstock and dewitt being the same person is stupid as a plot device too. but it does show that she is the portal to the two of them.

    Just finished Bioshock: Infinite on the Nintendo Switch...... Wow what a game, what an experience and story. I loved every minute of it, when I've let it sink in I'll be playing through again!! Coincidentally I'm watching a sci-fi show on Netflix at the moment called 'Dark' and both Infinite and Dark are quite relatable in their mechanics, multiverses, quantum entanglement and bootstrap theories. Mind bending and brilliant!!

    I held off so long to play infinite. I finally just recently had time to play it. Probably one of the best games I have played in a while as I binged it in 2 days where it usually takes me weeks to finish games. I am a sucker for multiverse stuff so that ending took me for a ride.

    Every time Booker dies in battle he comes back to life. But he re appears a few seconds before he died. I reckon Elizabeth jumps to an alternative universe each time he dies until she finds one where he survives the entire story.

      The universes are the same.let's say there are two parallel universes and you die at that universe.then you go to this door where you respawn and your enemies are still there. Meaning in those other universe is the present and you are dead literally in that former universe you died.its still the same meaning the enemies have no idea why are they there?!..and you show up to just kill them and they have no idea.you will always die in that universe and your present self will always be on the next universe and yet you still know.

    I feel like in Bioshock 1, Jack's plane crashes because Columbia shoots it down...

    • @UndeadAssassinR
      @UndeadAssassinR 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      For the original Bioshock (2007), it's Fontaine (Atlas) who sabotages the plane. But in Burial at Sea (2013, Spoilers!!!) it's Elizabeth who sabotages it (through Fontaine's demands).

      Jameron You shouldn't be on a spoiler thread if you care this much. I mean't no malice but I assumed you were a Bioshock fan (thus finished all games). I've not spoiled the 3 main twists for you.
