I’m so glad that this is a quilting video and not a drinking game cos if I had a shot every time someone said flange I’d be dead. That being said, I didn’t think I was going to like it but I actually think Bev is a magician. Those quilts (especially the red and black one) looks absolutely outstanding. Amazing. Off to buy some vodka now 😂 haha 😊
Your comment is a hoot!!! I've shared with with all my friends, including my magician friend Bev, ha, ha, ha! Remember, quilt responsibily and don't drink and press the presser foot! Thanks for watching :) ! 😂😍🐥
@ hahaha 😂 love it. I’m going to have to bookmark this video I want to flange my Christmas quilt I’m making for myself. And I decided I wanted to “Bev-ify” it with a pop of colour on the flange
I adore your quilt videos! Especially your laugh and the music when you rip and do on! Your guest is such a treasure! She makes me miss my great grandmothers!
I'm just going to be honest. I almost didn't watch this video because I thought this isn't something I'll ever want to do. I am so glad I watched it! This was so inspiring! I've done several bindings since watching your binding corner hack and I can't do it any other way now, it's the ONLY way to do it!!!!
Once I did one or two, I was addicted and look for the opportunity with every quilt I make. Like I mentioned in the video though, it just doesn't suit every quilt.
I'm a bit of a rebel and a bit lazy. Is there a reason why you need to connect the flange separately from connecting the regular binding? Great tutorial, love how you guys rock 'n roll!
I have generally had a smoother, less bulky joint when separating them plus you don't have the additional struggle of trying to get the flange perfectly aligned when you sew your bias seam. Like I said in the video, I generally stagger mine a little more than Di did and often, you can look at the quilt and not be able to tell where your final joining is vs just the joining of the strips in the initial set.
@@christi4169 Well I’m so glad you watched Christi. I’m glad you’re liking the hack, I feel the same way you do, L O L. Thanks for watching my channel.😊♥️🐥
You're such an accomplished quilter, Di, but I can't believe you had never done a faux flange! What a treat to have your friend Bev come in and teach us all! I stayed up late to watch this tutorial and it was well worth my time, too! I loved seeing all of the quilts and understanding what works and what doesn't. Please plan to do a future tutorial using Bev's last quilt as inspiration.
Yes we are blessed. So far 8 of those grandchildren are married and blessed us with 10 great-grandchildren. Thank you for your comments and for watching our tutorial.
Hi Di! I never would’ve thought that flange binding would be that simple until you get to the joining of the pieces at the end. Bevs Quilt at the end of the video is absolutely gorgeous!
I love using a flange binding when it accents a quilt. Bev is correct, a flange binding doesn't always look good on every quilt. I too have used a flange binding when I didn't have enough of the fabric remaining that I wanted to bind my quilt with. It was the perfect solution. Bev brought great examples of flange bindings that work and a couple that didn't as well as expected. I appreciate seeing the scrappy flange binding and seeing what happens if there isn't enough contrast in the fabrics used in the flage. I am sure that she just kept me from doing that same thing. This was a wonderful tutorial! Bev is delightful! ❤ the rockin' tunes.
Interesting and enjoyable. Very well explained technique with some useful hints and tips. The auditioning of fabrics is so important with the brown and blue not quite matching the existing fabric but really working. 😊
Thank you, ladies, for such a nice, detailed tutorial on Flange Binding. I tried it once and didn't think it turned out so well, so I have never tried again. After watching this I will give it another try for sure.
Great video Ladies. I haven’t made a flange binding for a long time. You have me inspired now. Bev’s quilt at the end is amazing! Love from Australia 🥰
Whelp, you talked me into trying it. I wasn't originally going to watch Di. I didn't think a flange binding was for me and just too much work, but it came on and...well you showed me!! Now just need to find the right quilt to give it a try!! 🤔

Hi, I'm new to your channel and I have to say "thank you" for your teaching the method of applying Flange Binding! I've loved this and have not yet tried it! I definitely will give it a try now! I absolutely adore this quilt you are working on in the video! So sweet! I look forward to viewing more of your videos! :)
You will be successful. Just fall in love with quilting and everything else will follow. I finished my first quilt in June 2018 and have done around 35 since then with close to 30 being king size. There are many simple patterns that look fairly complex. The ones I showed with the green/gray binding and the one with the black border/binding and red flange are both super simple patterns which any beginner can accomplish. Just pick fabric that inspires you, read your pattern first, cut accurately and HAVE FUN!
Fabulous tutorial! I enjoyed both of you ladies! You both have so much knowledge and experience! Thanks for sharing it with us! Bev’s quilts are big and beautiful! I have never done a flange binding and I certainly have never seen them taken apart to connect at the end! It makes sense though! I like the way your quilt and binding turned out, Di! Well, thank you, Sherry😍❣️. You were right Bev quilts are big and beautiful, her grandkids are so lucky. Recently, she’s just started making a few for her and her honey to have around the house. Thanks for watching Sherri.👍🏼😊♥️🐥
Ken's Sewing Center has an industrial stitch in the ditch foot that fits on your machine that makes sewing down the flange really easy. It cost about $20. It is articulated and has a little fence in the center. It rides along the edge of the ditch. Thanks for showing how to split the strips and spread out the bulk. I have used the flange method on my last 20 or so quilts. I cut mine a bit wider because I like to use a wider seam for attaching the binding. That way more fabric is held by the feeddogs. Thanks for the great channel.
I have a SID foot on my other Juki and I’ve always used it for binding. On my TL2010 I’ve learned there lines to follow. Wow! 20 flagged bindings, you’re a rockstar😱 TFW😊♥️🐥
I apparently got interrupted when I was originally watching this video because I am rewatching it now because I am making a flange binding and want to try Bev's method of joining the flange binding ends. I didn't see the end with Bev's recreation of a quilt that she saw a pic of. OH MY GOODNESS, her quilt is breathtakingly GORGEOUS❣️ Di, PLEASE do a series of tutorials when you make your version of this quilt using 2 1/2" squares. I really want to make one too! I would also love to have Bev join you to show us how to make that wonderful border in a future video. The two of you compliment each other and are enjoyable to watch. Just some of my thoughts. I LOVED this video.
Wow…. I’ve learned something new and absolutely beautiful…..I’ll definitely try this out on my next quilt……thanks to both of you Beverly and Di……..I’m so excited to try this!
Thank you doing the flange binding. I would have sewn the two end together at the end of the binding without thinking about disbursing the bulk of the seams. Also, thank you Bev for sharing your gorgeous quilt and size of the pieces. I am making quilts for my grandkids and children. I want to take the leftover fabrics from them all and make a quilt for my husband and I. I now know what quilt I will make. It is stunning. ❤
Thank you, Di and Bev, for the great flange binding tutorial. I’ve always shied away from flange binding, but Bev’s method is more approachable than others I’ve seen. Di, the flange binding looks great on your quilt and your corners are so clean.
I just want to go through the screen and hug Little Miss Bev. She’s so adorable…not to mention she makes the most AMAZING bread and rolls!! Miss ya guys. Love the flange binding. Gorgeous quilt Bev made on your design wall. Can’t wait to see how you quilt it Miss Di. 🤗🤗
@@sisterchicksquilting she did amazing. Very easy to understand. What about that heart swirl design. Something kinda flowy. It’s such a cute and cheery quilt. ☺️
@@sisterchicksquilting oh wait…you mean the one Miss Bev did…gosh I don’t know…someone told me once of the design of the top has diamonds or squares you should go with a swirl or circles so it doesn’t take away from the design but I don’t know how true that is.
The Faux flange is amazing! On one quilt I made, I didn’t have enough fabric for the standard width binding. But withe that addition of the flange, I had a fantastic solution. It’s worth the extra effort
Really struggled with flange binding and swore never again. After this video, not going to swore again. Thanks ladies! Have saved this to my favorites playlist.
Great job on the flange binding. Thank u for showing us how to use a stiletto to help get a clean corner of binging Bev. You are a fantastic teacher. Thank u for your tip to stagger the 2 binding pieces together to prevent bulk where seams overlap Will definitely use this on my daughters Dresden sunflower wall hanging Blessing to both of you 😊
Hi Teresa👋, We’re glad you enjoyed the video and learned a small thing. Did you know Bev will be at the retreat?, Yep, you will definitely get to hang out with her. Thanks for watching my videos.😊♥️🐥
I love this faux flange binding. It really adds a great dimension to the quilt! I definitely will be trying this🎉 And also your corner binding hack🎉🎉 that's superb. I want to try that on my next quilt. Such a great tutorial! Thankyou🎉🎉🎉
Thank you so much, Sara! I’m still so overjoyed over the binding hack, so glad I learned it and was able to share it with you all. Thanks for watching.😊♥️🐥
What a pleasant guest and I learned a lot! Thanks, Bev! And thanks for demonstrating, Di! I really do want to try this! Now Im off to watch the binding hack video!
Isn't her scrap quilt absolutely amazing? That is her 3rd scrappy quilt, she ot excited about scrappy from my Christmas string quilt and now she can't stop, LOL. Thanks for watching Joni 😊
Thank you so much for this tutorial. Love the flange binding, I’ll have to try it. I have two overflowing baskets of quilt tops, so I need to get quilting and binding. 😊
Flange binding is my go-to! Never thought of using a scrappy flange, but it’s going to be perfect on the scrappy quilt I just started this weekend! Thank you Di and Bev!
Love love love this video! I feel super comfortable now doing a flange binding. And then at the end, you got this incredible cool quilt pattern. Love it.!
I think your first flange binding looks great! And THANK YOU for the binding hack!!! I’ve done a lot of flange binding but this was a new take on it, extremely helpful 😊.
I appreciate what you are trying to do here. Love the info. Total side note… I was struggling with deciphering info if I was looking at your faces because you were looking at the camera when talking “to” each other. 😂 You ladies are fantastic and I just love your chemistry! ❤
Very nice! The last binding I did, I pressed it to the front before I stitched it. I usually dont. I jave t9 say it made sewing it easier and that binding actually turned out better than my other ones. I may keep pressing. We'll see.
Great timing for this video -- I'm getting ready to do a flange binding (my first!) on a baby quilt, and after watching your video, I feel ready to tackle it! Thank you, Di and Bev!
You both did a great job on the flange quilting and I took a whole page of notes. Loved the binding trick of leaving the extra 1/8" on the corners. Works perfectly every time. Also took notes on the scrappy quilt because it had a nice pattern to it rather than doing crumb quilting. Thanks again for adding to my quilting knowledge.
I love everything about this video...learned soooo much! Thank you! I will be using your corner hack from now on and that faux flange is going to be a "keeper" for sure. Thank you thank you!
Absolutely awesome video. ❤️❤️❤️. Can’t wait to try for myself! I’ve seen a couple of other videos about flange binding, but yours by far is the most thorough and informative
Love this video Di and Bev! You both had so much fun, which made it fun to watch. Both quilts are beautiful. Both of you are incredible teachers. Can’t wait to try this. 😊.
Welcome aboard the quilting train Raquel! Hold on it can go pretty fast :) I've attached 3 videos where I talk about color. The first two are the same quilt and it's all about scrappy color and how you can put colors together. The second I teach how I pulled colors from one focus fabric and put a quilt together, plus it's a beginner quilt. Then the third is another color lesson. th-cam.com/video/MTfKUnKIFGk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=MnPfsWZkoYuT7Idl th-cam.com/video/We8WK7J5Zuc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=XhIwa0aAfmAzF62I th-cam.com/video/WBah4--StMw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=5j8HiRi1ZQf0KHTk I'd get a color wheel, and play with it, yo ucan print one off the computer if you don't want to spend $. Color theory and coordinating fabric can totaly be learned. Enjoy & Thanks for watching!!!
Thanks ladies for this tutorial. I have been waiting for it so I can play it while I try my first one. Things always go a little easier when you have some support in the sewing room with you. Tell the engineer I thought his music choice was fitting since you both rocked this video! 😄
Thank you for this video ! I always love how flange binding looks! I have tried it a couple times and there is an art to making flange binding. ❤❤❤ thank you so much..
I have sewn many a flanged binding. I have never opened the two fabrics at the end. The flange and plus binding fabrics sew very beautifully together at the end without separating them. I do iron my flanged binding after I have gone around quilt the first time!
Cool, I'm just gtetting into the flange neighborhood and I think it's cool that there are so many ways to finish our quilt so awesome. Thanks for chiming in and for watching my video
My sister described a flange binding to me over the phone a few years ago, and then sent a picture of her project, which was of course enhanced by the clever technique! I’m so grateful for everyone who shares their creative ideas on TH-cam! Thank you, both, very much! Part of being a good teacher is being willing to pass along things that you tried, but didn’t like the results. That helps your followers keep from making the same mistakes. In this video one way that you helped me Bev, without even knowing it, was when you explained why you don’t want a flange to be very wide. I’m not a quilter, but I have been sewing for 67 years, primarily garments and a variety of crafts. I appreciated what you pointed out, because it wouldn’t have occurred to me, so thank you, very much! In the past couple of years I’ve noticed that a lot of people who put sewing tutorials on TH-cam, are using wool pressing mats. Is there an advantage, over our regular ironing boards? I assume it must have something to do with the steam. Sometimes I see people using them on top of their Olaf mats and I cringe. What prevents the hot steam from warping the mat? I haven’t finished watching the video. I wanted to ask the question about wool mats, before I forgot. I’m eager to watch your teaching segment! Thank you, both, for making it available. It was very enjoyable watching good friends sewing together. Both of your quilts are beautiful! Bev, thank you for taking the time to bring your most recent work of art, and for explaining how thousands of little pieces of fabric came together, creating a quilt, that apparently, one of your GRANDchildren and his or her spouses will treasure for their lifetime, and lovingly pass down to more of your blessed descendants.
About wool pressing mats Linda..., They capture the steam and heat then throw it up under the poiece you're pressing. So it's like it's pressed on both sides at once. They can get a little hot but the difference they make in yoru pressed pieces is a gmae changer. I'm thankful for having Bev in my life Linda, I've learned so much from her :) Thanks for watching
@@sisterchicksquilting It was very thoughtful of you to be willing to take the time to answer my question about a wool mat. Because of how much I have sewn, before I asked you the question, it was easy for me to assume the process that you described, but, I didn’t think of it in those words. You are a good teacher! Your description was helpful, thank you. Because of how common they are now, I assume they are available many places. Are you aware of a business that offers them the most reasonably? I get all of my notions from Wawak, in case you want an outstanding (least expensive for quality products) source for brand name threads, zippers, etc. Joann is my favorite fabric and craft supply store, but I wouldn’t dream of buying notions or quitting supplies there!!! The prices are considerably higher than Wawak or Amazon.
Made that huge mistake - used my steam iron on sm. wool mat ON TOP OF MY LARGE OLFA CUTTING MAT. BIG MISTAKE! But cut the good parts of the mat into two pieces and use them for smaller cutting. But the wool press mats are great. Amazon had a deal: one 24x17, one 10x10, and a silicon iron mat for around $37. I use mine on my ironing board now for small pieces - it saves me from buying ironing board covers.
@@Linda-ml4ls make sure it’s one that is 100% wall. I bought one by price one time. When I use a hot steam iron on it, there’s a brown buildup that comes from the mat, then builds up on my iron. I would go with a name brand, Madam Sew, Or make sure it’s returnable if you get the sticky brown buildup. They can also be used for blocking on hand, sewing projects because pins stick right down in them. You don’t have to use those quilting sprays and can get the same effect with a wool mat. They are great tool to have.

Thank you for the kind comments. It was a lot of fun to make. If you do venture into this quilt, please feel free to contact me with any questions.
That is a great scrappy quilt idea, Christa. The more grandchildren you have, the scrap year it will be what a cool quilt.😃 TFW😊♥️🐥
Thank you, Di and Bev, for the great flange binding tutorial. I’ve always shied away from flange binding, but Bev’s method is more approachable than others I’ve seen. Di, the flange binding looks great on your quilt and your corners are so clean.
Thank you very much Joanne and TFW😊♥️🐥
I just want to go through the screen and hug Little Miss Bev. She’s so adorable…not to mention she makes the most AMAZING bread and rolls!! Miss ya guys. Love the flange binding. Gorgeous quilt Bev made on your design wall. Can’t wait to see how you quilt it Miss Di. 🤗🤗
I know, she is so huggable 🤗 Didn't she do a great job of teaching me?!? How would you quilt it Debbie?
I agree, it’s a great method & worth the time. TFW😊♥️🐥
Really struggled with flange binding and swore never again. After this video, not going to swore again. Thanks ladies! Have saved this to my favorites playlist.
@@LifenaDay525 you’re welcome, but sometimes I still swear when I’m quilting🤣😂
I love Beverly's 'binding extension with a flange' tip! I say we start calling her the Quilt Whisperer 😊
You know, some of my best ideas have come from desperation.😂
Ha ha ha ha ha, Michele and I already called her that! We’re happy to have you join us VeeVee👍🏼😊♥️
Great job on the flange binding. Thank u for showing us how to use a stiletto to help get a clean corner of binging
Bev. You are a fantastic teacher. Thank u for your tip to stagger the 2 binding pieces together to prevent bulk where seams overlap
Will definitely use this on my daughters Dresden sunflower wall hanging
Blessing to both of you 😊
Hi Teresa👋, We’re glad you enjoyed the video and learned a small thing.
I love a flange binding.
Yes♥️❣️🐥
What a pleasant guest and I learned a lot! Thanks, Bev! And thanks for demonstrating, Di! I really do want to try this! Now Im off to watch the binding hack video!
Awesome! Thank you for the great instructions.
Thank you for watching Patricia😊♥️🐥
Love flange bindings, it’s a nice surprise on the quilt. Love the music while you were sewing!
Thanks Kendra. Turns out the music has been quite controversial😂🤣TFW😊♥️🐥
I enjoyed this tutorial on flange binding and definitely plan to try it soon! Bev's scrap quilt is amazing 🤩. Thank you, Di!
Yes, you do Joy. You need to get those done🤣😂
Beautiful! And that binding hack is really amazing and makes the corners look soooo much better!
Flange binding is my go-to! Never thought of using a scrappy flange, but it’s going to be perfect on the scrappy quilt I just started this weekend! Thank you Di and Bev!
You are so welcome J Murphy!! I love scrappy quilts, have fun!!
I've done a LOT of piped western shirts - that method is actually what I was expecting to see in this video. Thanks for the quick response
Awesome, I l love sewing clotting, those were the days 👍🏼😊♥️🐥
Love love love this video! I feel super comfortable now doing a flange binding. And then at the end, you got this incredible cool quilt pattern. Love it.!
I’m so glad to hear that Sandra 👍🏼😀 THANKS FOR WATCHING 😊♥️🐥
I think your first flange binding looks great!
And THANK YOU for the binding hack!!! I’ve done a lot of flange binding but this was a new take on it, extremely helpful 😊.
I love this binding! I don't recall ever seeing it before.
I have sewed flange bindings and did not know how to join them at the end to make it look good. Know I will be able to. Thank you.
You are very welcome, Marian. I hope the directions work out well for you. Thanks for watching.😊♥️🐥
Thank you for this video, I learned so many things from it, I am sure I will watch it again when I next do binding.
Thank you very much😊♥️🐥
💙 great job. I have to watch this again and I saved you. I follow you all the time you’re one of my favorites. Thanks for sharing.
Wow, thank you Debbie ! Thank yo uso much :)
I appreciate what you are trying to do here. Love the info. Total side note… I was struggling with deciphering info if I was looking at your faces because you were looking at the camera when talking “to” each other. 😂
You ladies are fantastic and I just love your chemistry! ❤
So sorry Jenn, we had a mic issue and there was a huge segment that I lost the sound on and we had already done the work. Thanks for watching!
Very nice! The last binding I did, I pressed it to the front before I stitched it. I usually dont. I jave t9 say it made sewing it easier and that binding actually turned out better than my other ones. I may keep pressing. We'll see.
Awesome Rebecca 👍🏼TFW😊♥️🐥
I really appreciated this tutorial. I didn't know how to do that. Thanks so much.
You’re welcome👍🏼 Thanks for watching 😊♥️🐥
Thank you both.
Great timing for this video -- I'm getting ready to do a flange binding (my first!) on a baby quilt, and after watching your video, I feel ready to tackle it! Thank you, Di and Bev!
Yes, you've got this. Good luck on your baby quilt!
Isn't that binding hack the greatest?!?! Every time I use it I simply smile, it makes me happy!! Thanks for watching Robyn
Looks amazing! Thanks to both of you!!
Thank you for watching Cindy 👍🏼😊♥️🐥
Loved this episode, Di. Thanks to you and Bev for a great tutorial. And the engineer was on top of his comments game!!!
He get's that way and Bev is sure a lot of fun to hang out with. Thanks for watching Marti!
Really nice to know. Thank you! I love your presentation, your laughter and self irony 😊👏
Thank you so much and thanks for watching my channel!
I'm motivated to try this method. Thanks for sharing.
Will definitely watch this again and try it on a quilt!
Thank you very much Judy :) !
First time watching you!11 Happy to have found you !! Thank you. Love this extra snap it gives to a quilt.
Love this technique! I'm in love with Bev's quilt at the end! That braided border is 🔥!!
That’s so cool Janelle. Guess what Bev just brought to my shop today to be quilted? Yep, the very quilt you love. TFW😊♥️🐥
I love everything about this video...learned soooo much! Thank you! I will be using your corner hack from now on and that faux flange is going to be a "keeper" for sure. Thank you thank you!
Thank you Rosemary😊, you will love the hack👍🏼 Thanks for watching 😊♥️🐥
That was excellent!
loved the flange binding
Yes, it is. Sometimes that all one needs, enough, TFW!
Love love love flange binding. The best tutorial i have seen. Thank you and greetings from Germany 🫶🤗
Hello for Idaho 👋🥔🇺🇸 Thanks for watching 😊♥️🐥
Absolutely awesome video. ❤️❤️❤️. Can’t wait to try for myself! I’ve seen a couple of other videos about flange binding, but yours by far is the most thorough and informative
Thank you so much Kitty and thanks for watching my channel 😳😊♥️🐥
Love this video Di and Bev! You both had so much fun, which made it fun to watch. Both quilts are beautiful. Both of you are incredible teachers. Can’t wait to try this. 😊.
Thank you so much, Janelle. We have fun hanging out together too. glad you had fun and thanks for watching.👍🏼😊♥️🐥
New at Quilting! Can't wait to try this! I am still having trouble with coordinating the fabrics .
Welcome aboard the quilting train Raquel! Hold on it can go pretty fast :)
I've attached 3 videos where I talk about color. The first two are the same quilt and it's all about scrappy color and how you can put colors together.
The second I teach how I pulled colors from one focus fabric and put a quilt together, plus it's a beginner quilt.
Then the third is another color lesson.

I'd get a color wheel, and play with it, yo ucan print one off the computer if you don't want to spend $. Color theory and coordinating fabric can totaly be learned. Enjoy & Thanks for watching!!!
I love a flange binding and have done many! Must say when joining at the end I have never done it separately, I just joined it like a normal binding.
That's cool , there are so many ways to get it done. Thanks for watching
Thanks ladies for this tutorial. I have been waiting for it so I can play it while I try my first one. Things always go a little easier when you have some support in the sewing room with you. Tell the engineer I thought his music choice was fitting since you both rocked this video! 😄
I hope I didn’t make you wait too long. Thanks for watching 😊♥️🐥
Thank you for this video ! I always love how flange binding looks! I have tried it a couple times and there is an art to making flange binding. ❤❤❤ thank you so much..
That is right Lisa and I’m going to have to practice the art several more times so I can really get it down. TFW😊♥️🐥
I have sewn many a flanged binding. I have never opened the two fabrics at the end. The flange and plus binding fabrics sew very beautifully together at the end without separating them. I do iron my flanged binding after I have gone around quilt the first time!
That's cool that they sewed nicely together. I've never tried, it's good to hear it can be done. Thanks for watching, Di
I do mine with 1 3/4" for the flange and 1 1/2" for the main binding fabric. Good tip on joining the end of the binding strips as seperate pieces.
Cool, I'm just gtetting into the flange neighborhood and I think it's cool that there are so many ways to finish our quilt so awesome. Thanks for chiming in and for watching my video
Beautiful ladies. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
❤
I had never heard of a flange binding before this!😮
Hope this video encourages you to try it.
They’re a great look. Hope you try it sometime. TFW😊♥️🐥
EXCELLENT!!! EXCELLENT!!!!
HI Dorothy from Idaho, home of the famous Idaho Potato
