I've known Martha for 8 years... NOT I've been knowing Martha for 8 years)... So if the person speaking considers 'working as a teacher' to be a state for them (a condition that's 'a part of them'/unlikely to change) then said person would lean towards 'I've worked as a teacher for five years' ... however, if the speaker considers it more like an action (because to work can be considered an action) then they'd use the Pres. Perfect Continuous because the action does start in the past and continues. I know... confusing right!!!

No. In italiano sono stato indica che l'azione é finita. Quindi puoi dire sono stato un insegnante 5 anni fa (I was a teacher 5 years ago). Se sei ancora un insegnante devi usare il presente.
