The opposite side of this story is that Japan was once known as the only major country that doesn't like iPhone at all in the early year. Apple once wanted to get into Japan, but at that time all major mobile network carrier providers enforced a rule to put their logo on all the devices they sell in their stores. At that time, Apple stores are not as popular as they are now, and most customers usually buy mobile phones in carrier service stores so that they can get a better deal. So you can imagine that's very important for the carrier providers to let Apple know they are the boss of Japan market. But Apple refused to bow to them, so Apple ended up having very little share in Japan market at that time. Later, a new mobile network carrier came into the market known as Softbank, who was willing to let Apple sell iPhones in their stores without Softbank logos on the device, because they thought Japanese customers will love iPhone and Softbank needed market share at that time. As a result, the deal was done. At the end of the story, other major carrier service providers had to admit that they have made a huge mistake at a great cost. And to make up for the mistake, they have also let iPhones get into their stores without having their logos on them. But that was already too late. Nowadays people are more willing to buy Apple devices in Apple stores than ever before. And that's perhaps the most important part of the story on how Apple wins in Japan market.

Samsung is a company that started by providing technology from Sanyo NEC and copying Sony. Is Samsung still an anti-Japanese company? The reason why Japanese people don't use Korean products like Samsung is simply because they have poor performance and aftercare is neglected, not because they are anti-Korean.

Apple and Japanese design languages are very closely aligned. Both tend to focus on efficiency and simplicity when it comes to their design language. Hence why the iPhone was very popular amongst the Japanese.
The success of Apple in Japan may be even traced back all the way to the 1990s, even before Steve Jobs returned back to Apple in 1997. (The Japanese exclusive PowerBook 550c as an evidence).
Apple's product design is very minimalistic. Minimalism is very popular in Japan, they do not like bulky looking products, like Microsoft's X-Box, for example.
@Frank Silvers yeah, so far I'm loving the ipad. I'm just not a big fan of apples prices for many of their products. Especially in 2021. I mean selling an ipad with 32gb is pretty much an insult. I definitely have a love and hate relationship when it comes to apple. Lol
@Jafferson Llaban why are they crap exactly? The ipad can pretty much do almost everything the imacs can do. And as for the iphones.... they're great, but I definitely enjoy the multitasking on android. (Specifically on oxygen OS).
I think one aspect that Apple did great in Japan is Apple store experience. The hi-end atmosphere, the helpful staff and their programs is quite unique.
Most people don't buy iPhones at the Apple store though. They usually go to Docomo, Softbank, Au, or a department store where there is a quite the process and sales pitch by staff in getting them setup with an iPhone.
Samsung just isn't a good company in my opinion. Their devices aren't really good, their marketing is absolutely terrible and they basically discriminated against Japan. This is why Apple is catching back up in the global Smartphone market.
Japanese not using Samsung has very little to do with hating Korea. If iPhone was a Korean brand , Japanese will still but it. Besides while they have their own brand Sony for Androids , why would they buy any foreign brands. Japanese just prefers Macs, iOs and the ecosystem.
I remember when I went to Japan 2 years ago. I traveled around Tokyo via subway during my first week and I was stumped by how many iPhones I saw everywhere I looked. That was in sept. 2019 and the only Galaxy ad I recall seeing was because it was the official sponsor for the 2020 Tokyo games. (I don't remember if the samsung brand was on the board)
I live in Japan. All of my co-workers use iPhones. It's unreal. I'm the only employee that doesn't. It doesn't matter though because Japanese people tend to use Line instead of imessage.
I was living in Japan during the transition of Galapagos Phones (Garake) to iPhones which was very interesting. There was some slight turmoil between people who wanted to remain "traditional" with the Japanese flip phones and the new iphone users mostly between the younger generation and older generation. Now the flip phones in Japan are mostly obsolete which is sad but understandable since in comparison, their uses are limited. It was fun to see people with millions of keychains on their phones back in the day which now is not possible due to lack of holes for Japanese keychains in iPhones. I remember a couple of friends would be weary of moving over to an iPhone since there wouldn't be holes for keychains. (some weird priorities xP) I never knew that this all started with the Samsung emojis though. That's super interesting. These 2 countries have a lot of bad blood which I understand given the history but making it aggressive and apparent in products just seems like a crappy move and a way to force this attitude on others. It's weird seeing Android be a minority in Japan though "Why on earth would you chose an Android??" lol
Seriously, all of the other reasons that were explained were total BS. It was primarily driven because it was the only ubiquitous smartphone that had express transit capabilities that were compatible with the SUICA/PASMO/etc. readers at each train station. Apple explicitly added the required proprietary NFC reader that those SUICA readers utilize.
As a Japanese I think another reason is because everyone has iPhone here and its super cheap, you can buy iPhone 11’s for 38,000 yen and with my current part time job I can buy iPhone 12 every month without worrying financially
On conversation with Japanese: Oh yes iPhone, you mean Sony's most prevalent phone? Wait it wasn't made by Sony? I'm buying it anyway cause it's good. I can't believe these were real.
I got into gadgets and tech when the first iPhone came out. Japan at the time and for a long time after had very complicated and intricate OS' in their mobile phones. The companies there thought that's what the Japanese people wanted. I'm surprised and glad that simplicity and good design won out.
I think you missed the most important part as to why the iPhone became so successful. Japan used to be a gadget country - there were little devices for everything. Meishi (business card) readers, etc. In the iPhone, there's an app for that!
Well researched, well presented video. For those of us not from this part of the world, sheds light on the continued tension between Japan and Korea ~55 years after the end of WWII.
My guess is that Japanese use premium electronics. And they mostly use Japanese products, since they are the best in the market. One exception is Apple. What is the best tablet in the world? IPad Pro of course, no competitor can match the technological sophistication in both software and hardware and details. Only reason anyone buys any other tablet is price.
I visited Osaka in 2020, right before the lockdowns started, and I noticed that most of the people on the train used iPhones. Even more interesting is most of them still had the older generations, like the iPhone 5 and 6. It was very refreshing to see, for some reason.

I almost forgot that Sony Ericsson was a thing back in the first gen of the smartphone, it was good and feel premium.
If don't comes back. I would buy it.
Japanese won’t really buy something just because it’s made in Japan. Case in point: Japanese wines and cheeses. But Japanese are ready and willing to pay extra for good products, even if made abroad.
I doubt , japanese strongly hate korea.

As a side note, this comment was a bit of an inside joke lol. Not to mention there were only just several dislikes at the time this comment was made. However I do get your point.
When I saw Samsung, I immediately knew why Apple dominates Japan. It was a dumb business move to deliberately antagonize the Japanese market.
true, let history be history
Exactly !!!!!! Japan = Simplicity, Easy to use and Attention to detail
Yes
U clearly never been to japan. Japan doesnt equal simplicity. Japanese microwaves have 100000 settings to begin with. They make things to complicated
@@-Random_Games- Dude ! not that kind of simplicity. Technology is really complicated in japan. I was talking about simplicity in way of doing things
@@dhawalmadankar4471 ok i can see that i guesss
@@-Random_Games- Exactly. All Japanese tech products have convoluted designs. I have a Casio digital watch and it was 3 minutes ahead of time I tried to change it but failed and after years of using it like that I finally had to research online on how to set the fricking time. It’s the same with their cameras and everything else.
もちろん「みんな持ってるから買う」っていう層が大半だろうけど、少なくともAppleの丁寧なブランディングが日本人の心を鷲掴みしているという側面もあると私は思う。
I've been to Japan once in 2008. I remember people were using slender feature phones which I didn't see in other parts of the world. I always think that's one aspect which made Japanese culture unique. It's quite a surprise for me to learn that Japan has embraced the smart phone trend since then.
Samsung is a company that started by providing technology from Sanyo NEC and copying Sony.
Perhaps the founder's family is in the status of going on to a Japanese university, the founder attended Waseda University in Japan.
The current chairman is also a graduate of Waseda University in Japan. Lee Jae-yong, the eldest son and candidate for the next chairman, is a graduate of Keio University in Japan.
Is Samsung still an anti-Japanese company?
The reason why Japanese people don't use Korean products like Samsung is simply because they have poor performance and aftercare is neglected, not because they are anti-Korean.
Just because they went to Japanese university doesn’t mean it’s not anti Japanese, if I had to guess Samsung did it because of all the anti Japanese stuff in Korea because of the past history stuff between them

Hi a viewer from Japan and who is a Japanese. Personal opinion but I think the biggest reason for today at least is the brand factor of apple. Also being an Android user in Japan is hard 😆
Hi, I'm interested to know why being an Android user in japan is hard?
@@kamalhm-dev as an android user, one problem are accessories. An iphone screen protector can be bought for at least a dollar meanwhile in android protector at the same price wont even fit your screen. Case designs are not that varied, and are at least $15(which you have to buy online) compared to a dollar case at daiso.

@@mikeeogata6508 how about government apps that is needed day to day, any disparity between ios and android?
Apple and Japanese design languages are very closely aligned. Both tend to focus on efficiency and simplicity when it comes to their design language. Hence why the iPhone was very popular amongst the Japanese.
I think this is a huge stereotype, many things that comes from Japan are overly designed… Look at recent Lexus, and software applications

The success of Apple in Japan may be even traced back all the way to the 1990s, even before Steve Jobs returned back to Apple in 1997. (The Japanese exclusive PowerBook 550c as an evidence).
And the Pippin.
Apple's product design is very minimalistic. Minimalism is very popular in Japan, they do not like bulky looking products, like Microsoft's X-Box, for example.
Ohh how do you put an xbox in your pocket?
@sergioyichiong7269 Unless you are using Xbox Game Pass through your Android smartphone, then there is no way.

@Frank Silvers yup. Using my new iPad right now. And I’m an android user.
@Jafferson Llaban annoyed with the iphone, or the android vs iphone drama??
@Frank Silvers yeah, so far I'm loving the ipad. I'm just not a big fan of apples prices for many of their products. Especially in 2021. I mean selling an ipad with 32gb is pretty much an insult. I definitely have a love and hate relationship when it comes to apple. Lol
@Jafferson Llaban why are they crap exactly? The ipad can pretty much do almost everything the imacs can do.
And as for the iphones.... they're great, but I definitely enjoy the multitasking on android. (Specifically on oxygen OS).
@Jafferson Llaban lol. Companies steal ideas from each other all the time, so calm down. 😂
I think one aspect that Apple did great in Japan is Apple store experience. The hi-end atmosphere, the helpful staff and their programs is quite unique.
Apple was able to provide all that because they were charging people $200 to come into the Apple store to change a phone battery.
@@purplecrayon7281 Agree, they did charge a lot.

Japan is an Apple Heaven and i love it ❤️

I live in Japan. All of my co-workers use iPhones. It's unreal. I'm the only employee that doesn't. It doesn't matter though because Japanese people tend to use Line instead of imessage.
You know if Japan likes you... you are incredibly talented, culturally gifted, and quality driven.
(some weird priorities xP)
I never knew that this all started with the Samsung emojis though. That's super interesting. These 2 countries have a lot of bad blood which I understand given the history but making it aggressive and apparent in products just seems like a crappy move and a way to force this attitude on others.
It's weird seeing Android be a minority in Japan though "Why on earth would you chose an Android??" lol
Because you re not 15 anymore?
Suprised you never mentioned the ease of use of Suica with the iPhone too.
Ayy I was waiting for this! Thank you Greg.

Apple: "I use the Japanese to destroy the Japanese"
Japanese companies: " I'll never forgive the Japanese"
As a Japanese I think another reason is because everyone has iPhone here and its super cheap, you can buy iPhone 11’s for 38,000 yen and with my current part time job I can buy iPhone 12 every month without worrying financially
I'm curious , how much does Iphone 12 pro or 13 pro cost now in Japan ?

Samsung may be the biggest android brand in the world...but yeah, its hardly has any market share in China or Japan...
In the iPhone, there's an app for that!
used to be?
the fact that a Samsung ad was shown before this

It just made me looked at my emoji if gboard has these, and it does 😁😂😂🎌🗾🎌
My guess is that Japanese use premium electronics. And they mostly use Japanese products, since they are the best in the market. One exception is Apple. What is the best tablet in the world? IPad Pro of course, no competitor can match the technological sophistication in both software and hardware and details. Only reason anyone buys any other tablet is price.
Apple didn’t partner with SoftBank, it’s the other way around: SoftBank negotiated an exclusive Apple contract for the first few years in Japan.
its because the japanese appreciate the craft and elegance of the iphone unlike android
I visited Osaka in 2020, right before the lockdowns started, and I noticed that most of the people on the train used iPhones. Even more interesting is most of them still had the older generations, like the iPhone 5 and 6. It was very refreshing to see, for some reason.
That is extreme loyalism!
