This video is a tutorial of one some of the important customs of the Persian New Year, and a full tour of the centerpiece of the New Year- the haft seen table. You'll learn the vocabulary associated with the table, as well as how to tell people 'happy new year' in Persian.

Sofre means table cloth (which is usually spread on the floor). Miz means table.

I also heard of the phrase saal e no mobarak for happy new year. Would that be correct as well?
Quick question: Is the food on the table just decorational or do you actually get to eat it (over the course of the thirteen days or something)?

I like style of teaching it's attractive and builds interest. Just to note that you missed the goldfish (maahi-e ghermez). The mirror and candles are also popular in Iranian weddings.

Hmmmm.... مبارک may also be an homograph for the arabic word مبارك
Or the same word in the two languages
what are the songs?
There is no mention of a haft-sin (or haft shin) sofreh anywhere in Iranian literature before 20th century. It is a relatively newly made-up custom. E.g. the live fish on the sofreh is a Chinese tradition.

aida shoma mobarak.. doesnt shoma mean you? so eid mubarak to you? is there a special name for this eid?
this is not Eid... this is not a religious festival.... it's the persian new year celebration....
oh.. in that case what does aide mean? it sounded like eid so i assumed it meant the same eid.
Aide mean new year shome means you (formal) and Mubarak means congrats so literally it's "new year you congrats" but the translation that makes sense is "happy new year to you" you can also say this to a group of people since shoma can also be used as plural
***** yeah but we dont speak arabic we speak persian so eid would litterally mean the the actual eid holiday to us.

dude, Urdu is perhaps as much as 40 % Persian.... probably more. Before Urdu was invented/created Farsi was the court language of the Mogul Court .

gold fishes were not a part of Haft Seen till recent decades.it comes from China and its not a Persian tradition to put gold fishes on Sofre
