Whenever someone says good morning in my head, I answered back good morning Vietnam! The irony was not lost on me that the VinFast is in fact from Vietnam, and this will be what makes me chuckle for the rest of my day
Cool video. My old neck of the woods. This 650mi stretch of hwy70 I’ve done too many times to count back in my youth, usually having to fill up only twice in parents’ gas sipper Toyota Camry. I wouldn’t drive my VF8 on this stretch now because the charging infrastructure doesn’t look too good, but as a daily driver it is my most favorite car I’ve own
Vinfast EVs particularly VF8 and VF8 Plus, are nowadays not new. Vinfast has launched its first model in the US since December 2023, which is now almost 2 years. Slowly but solidly, Vinfast has been an established brand in North America. How do I know? Personally, I have been driving a VF8 Plus for over 6 months, without any problems. The EV has been as reliable as expected, safely getting me from point A to point B. Even automotive industry specialist Sandy Munro said when he first test drove a Vinfast in September 2022, "At the end of the day people would be happy with what VF8 offered." He added, The VF8 [is] as very stable, with the driving dynamics similar to that of a BMW. And Vinfast particularly VF8 and VF8 Plus has stood the test of time after 3 years in America!
I have a soft spot for Vinfast because I feel like while they made a mistake in releasing their first vehicle in the US before it was ready, they got a million click bait videos with names like "I drive the worst new EV on the planet." I feel like they got a raw deal and I point people to Model S articles and videos circa 2013 when Tesla was struggling to get on their feet. The remarkable thing is that they have listened and tackled so many of the early problems that people had with their vehicles. There is still work to be done and some problems with hardware will not be solved until newer models are released but so many companies are just completely tone deaf.
@@meandmyEV When it comes to EVs, I don't pay attention to those "click bait videos" because none of them actually drives the vehicles. In fact, driving an EV for a few hours is totally different from driving it for the whole week. Also when it comes to my family's safety and my own, I don't have a soft spot for any vehicles, particularly EVs; and I am driving a VF8 Plus! Before trading my old hybrid car for the EV, I had done my own research on Vinfast and VF8. According to reports, the VF8 model made its first debut in January 2022, and it was Kim Java in California, who had test driven a VF8 Plus City Edition for a whole week, not just a few hours, with her family including her husband and 3 little kids in the EV. It clearly proved that VF8 was indeed a family/kid friendly electric SUV. At the same time Vinfast offered a promotion of $249/month to lease a VF8 with zero down. I took advantage of the promotion, and I have been driving a VF8 Plus since then or almost 7 months to be exact. My VF8 Plus has been great so far. Driving the VF8 is a joy, not to mention Vinfast's incomparable service.
@@GrillarGaming I believed it was a typo because as far as I know, Vinfast began to export the first batch of VF8 to the US in December 2022, not December 2023, which means it's been almost 2 years or 21 months to be exact. Thanks Jordan, for some reason I like the VF8 and I own a M3. I think it is because I like the look of the SUV but I also find it interesting of how a first generation EV performs. I do hope the VF3 comes to market for you. Is there any chance Out of Spec can get there hands on a VF9 to test out. All I have found is suspect TH-camrs favored by VinFast to make videos on their cars. As for the company VF8 yes please on the camp mode test. How about competition between Tesla, VinFast and any other brands on a side by side overnight challenge on maintaining temperature inside the car and how much energy used in an 8 hour test. Thanks for posting Jordan.

I have also become a fan of EV road tripping and I drive a Bolt EUV, which I'm sure everyone here knows charges really slowly. I drove it on a trip that was 900+ miles each way. I have access to my wife's gas vehicle but I wanted to try it just once. Now I can't wait to do it again. It is pretty nerdy and I enjoy the planning but surprisingly I enjoyed the stops the most. I feel like 40 minutes is the max that I feel comfortable stopping. 20-25 minutes to use the bathroom and get a snack. Another 10 or so to wander around to see what weird stuff is happening at the Walmart and/or truck stop, and then it takes about 10 minutes of sitting in the car messing with my phone and checking out the next stop until I actually get bored and want to leave. That is enough time in the Bolt to charge enough to drive another 100-120 miles.
Theres a guy in canada who did a roadtrip series in the VF8 did use the Tesla superchargers with magic dock so i guess the can can use tesla's chargers now
Just took a 1,000 mile road trip through Washington State and Canada, the difference in the charging infrastructure was night and day, in Canada I was never more than 50 miles from a charger, even through mountain passes (had two small hiccups, a gorgeous restop with a full array of chargers had no power when I pulled in, and the next stop an idiot with a Mitsubishi PHEV literally took the charger while I was in the process of activating it, but even with those, the next charger was still close enough that I comfortably just cruised to the next stop). Crossed the border, and went almost 200 miles before getting to a fast charger (thankfully I topped up in the small town at the border crossing before coming in). Grand Coulee City/Dam didn't have any fast chargers! A tourist destination built around a literal power plant and no chargers! That said, the US EA 350kw charger was by far the fastest charger I got to use, worked perfect and brought my rental Genesis G80 from 5% to 88% in 26 minutes.
Thanks for a great road trip video again. Many effort to do this. You must love this car after this really long trip although you are the Tesla's lovers. 2024 Plus trim must be a lot cooler in term of materials, build quality, power, suspension, and ADAS. I did not see you use voice comment during the trip. Hey Vinfast or Hey Alexa
What I’m getting from watching a lot of these videos lately is that it’s hard to judge the car on its charging speed, because it could just be the charger limiting the charge. It’s more about the poor charging infrastructure than it is the car itself in a lot of instances. I don’t think the Vinfast would be as bad as he was making it seem if the chargers themselves weren’t limiting the charging.
@@LifeAfterLosing I was thinking the same and that there are a lot more variables and volatility in the way chargers work than people expect. The difference in battery temperature, air temperature, small differences in the way each dispenser is wired, changes in the incoming grid power etc all make a difference in charging rate. Even a vehicle that charged prior to your arrival could make a difference. It isn’t surprising that you can plug into one dispenser and get 120 kw and then another a few minutes later and get 90 kw at more or less the same state of charge.
31:56 That's odd. In my experience, that's the exception rather than the rule for EA's Interstate sites. Almost every EA I use when traveling is less than a 1/4 mile off the freeway.
Great video Jordan. Love your patience and persistence with testing charging infrastructure. I live in rural NE IA. Where nothing but old blink chargers exist. I drive maverick hybrid XLT 24 which in my opinion has hardly any ADAS. Nothing compared to my 19 Kia Niro which I traded in on it. Lightning is too big for me size and $$$. Waiting. 😢
1:29:50 The ChargePoint Express Plus units are definitely capable of pushing 500 A @ 400 V (where the 200 kW rating comes from). Mercedes chose them as a hardware provider for that reason. The fact that you saw similar low power events at several EA chargers at a similar SOC makes me think that the lower charging speed issues are with the VF8 rather than the chargers themselves. Vinfast says they use both NMC and LFP, but I'm not sure about the U.S. models. That charging behavior is something I would expect more from LFP though (massive voltage sag while charging when the battery level drops below ~30%).
@@quangvinh1153 Good to know. If the VF8 uses NMC, then the charging issues could be thermal based. I've never seen the H+S cables throttle that way (it's either 100 A or 500 A consistently), but those were older, Gen 1 Signet that can have flaky power modules. So the issues Jordan encountered were likely a combination of old EA hardware and some inconsistent charging profile/thermals with the VF8.
@@newscoulomb3705 Vinfast is designed with factory industrial safety standards, including secure internet connection & easy maintain & fire principles. @@quangvinh1153 Sure. I'm not judging. I think the VF8's charging rate is good enough for a lot of people, but I don't think it's just the chargers that were broken. Jordan was trying to understand why the charging behaved that way, and he was thinking it could only be the charger. @@bfvader that’s what I thought as well. The charging speed is not that bad in comparison to anything other than the more expensive Hyundai/Kia products and Tesla. But if you are comparing it to a Model Y, this would seem slow and that is its direct competitor. Hey Jordan, did you ever get a loud bang coming from the battery area? When I rented the VF8 I had it done to me couple of times and it was scary feeling
This happened to my Tesla Model 3 occasionally. I had it since 2018 and it started days after I purchased it and it still happened occasionally. In fact, last week, it happened twice. it used to scared me and I asked the Tesla tech years ago and he said it's normal. So this isn't just Vinfast that it happened.

@@BillyONeal umm yes it is, if you are not subtracting the expensive road trip from your daily savings. Why don’t you guys use car scanner and an OBD reader to keep an eye on the battery pack temp? That’d give you a lot better insight on the potential reasons why charging performance isn’t what you expect.

Are homeowner's insurance OK with charging EV's in home garages (that said, your garage is awesome)? Dogs, trampolines, pools, etc. are problems. Can't believe EV's aren't also issues . . huge cost drivers.
I don't think it does any damage to just pop the handle on an AC charger, rather than pressing "stop charging." I don't do that with DC charging but even with that, I would guess that a solid state device cuts off charging before the contactors can respond. Would be great to get a real expert to discuss these on the podcast or something.

But if you are comparing it to a Model Y, this would seem slow and that is its direct competitor. But it seems like the biggest issue is with the chargers not holding the charge and not the Vinfast reducing the rate of charge.

Oh pl- ease

For Out of Spec staff that have first hand experience with Vinfast, If you were in the market for an electric SUV, would you buy this car over it's competition with your own money for your own and your family's personal use?
Hell no
I don’t think the UV coatings on the glass is great. I was getting so cooked on a recent trip I had to stop to apply sunscreen. The ergonomics are also a bit strange seating wise.
I was also getting derated charging with 40c ambient temp and mid 40c battery temp.
32:30 oh fond memories of Salina Kansas ! Wheee they shut the whole charger down while I was charging! Didn’t say anything to me I was clearly the only one sitting in curb charging 😢🙄
makes me glad I got a Tesla! When would you estimate that public charging catches up to Tesla Superchargers?
Jordan tell FRANCIE today a M3 off white today turned from left lane into Burger King parking lot when he saw on Goodman th TTTESLA CHARGERS back curb . Dark blue model Y an phsycadelic model 3 Chargin…. Y on 2b an 3 on 6a. In ur knowledge opinion what combinations would be best ???
When I got to speaker they told me “ U RULE “ . “ NAW I ain’t got one TTTESLA charger an u got 869 !!! SO U RULE!!! Ha
I hope us have catl battery upgrade option like in vietnam. It's would be much better

Jordan any updates?
I feel like if you slow down to 60, or 55 MPH, you will go much further than 267 miles.
My 2005 Hyundai Sonata gets 25 MPG at 65 MPH, and 34 MPG at 55 MPH.
My 2024 Mitsubishi Mirage gets 47-50 MPG at 65 MPH, and 60-64 MPG at 55 MPH.
Slower speeds help a ton, 70 MPH isn't good for hypermiling, or hyperelectricing?
65-70mph is the sweet spot for EVs especially the VF8. It's not very efficent
@@simplygregsterev I kind of doubt that, as you have to push against a lot more air, which does not help.
@@extralock1045 well considering I have a VF8… the speeds I quoted work well for good efficiency and time, including my other EVs. That being said where I live roadtrip charging isnt an issue so you can go 115-120kph. Yea sitting at 55mph would get more efficiency but then you will never get anywhere. 65-75mph or 105-110kph works well
@@simplygregsterev 55-60 MPH still gets you quite far, 1 mile a minute. (:
I drove from Lake Elsinore, California, to Tampa, Florida, and back, and went 55-60 MPH. Got about 500 to 600 miles per day. It was nice and relaxing. I find if I go faster I get mentally tired quick, and things start to annoy me.

Oh gosh it’s almost two hours
I don't think I've ever seen an Electrify America station derate with my Ioniq 6 pulling 240 kw, in the middle of the summer, in the blazing heat. I really do think it's just the Vinfast derating itself.
Doesn't charging and recharging shorten the life of the battery?😮
Tuyệt vời 🎉
18:05 even at 42¢ per kWh it's still substantially more expensive per mile than a comparable gas SUV
Only when fast charging on a road trip, which isn't something most people do regularly
For DC fast yes, but he also mentioned he paid 16¢ kWh at one point, on DC nonetheless. Point is, most don't, or shouldn't, use these units often.... charge at home or work.
VF3 is not suitable for US cuz its max speed is 100km/h which is abt 60mile/h. It s definitely a beautiful car but not for US customer
VF3 if delivery to US is definitely different than the version in VN mate. It will fall on $ 20k range with tax deduct to 13.5k.
It is for around the downtown
He had his cruise control on 75m/hr.
Its new name is De-electrify America.
that EV charging is pretty expensive for a roadtrip.$30-40 to only drive a little more then 200 miles adds up fast, especially when you consider the time you waste sitting there
I mean, gas would add up fast too. Road trips aren’t cheap!
Yes but at home it cost less than $10 and then you're traveling $250 or more miles and this is 90% of usage
The only time EVS are more expensive or the same as gas is when your road tripping and paying retail
@@electric-rideshare "It's expensive to EV road trip" isn't ignoring the charge at home benefits
@@BillyONeal umm yes it is, if you are not subtracting the expensive road trip from your daily savings. I think it just needs to be made clear to the new EV drivers that the savings from local driving (charging at home)make the occiasion "expensive" road trip charging insignificant in the big picture.
Are we saying the same thing?
Spring Roll doesn't like you badmouthing her.
charging will be a mixed bag, probably for the next 10 years
I kind of enjoy EV roadtrips less than in ICE vehicles, but just because I try to stretch the EVs to their last "drop". And with ICE, I just take a break whenever I want.
But this get's better whenever I drive some route multiple times in a same car. but the first time with a different car, I always want to get the most out of the vehicle.
Glad to see that EA stations are still just as bad as they were a year ago. 🙄
How do you not freeze with temp set at 61F? That's like 16C :O Anything less than 70F and I'd be wearing a jacket at least. I tend to keep 73-75F when I'm driving.
@ 1:03 : 1 2 KICK IT. !!!!!!
The charging curve is just a random integer generator
Vinfast uses Here WeGo map. not very accurate if you ask me, I always use Google Map instead :)
lol. It is attached with what3words. very accurate. Nokia Map still survive until now.
@@gocnhinvutru the route is usually correct. but it doesnt show updated route if the route is blocked by construction. or not accurate traffic level. what3words in the map are mostly spamming bs ( at least in VN)

This is another reminder how far ahead Tesla is with their EV tech and charging infrastructure.
Where are the Jeep videos? Go out wheeling in that Rubicon. If parts aren’t flying you aren’t trying.
Why use charge points just use the tesla ev charge adapter for none tesla ev's
Yeah, my understanding is that Vinfast can charge on Tesla chargers.
Hi
Two broken stations: the Chargepoint omni port is meaningless when the charger is broken. Chargepoint infrastructure is constantly broken and nobody at Chargepoint really cares.

My Rivian T does better then 2.3.
