    I’m just going to thank you for this video. I started doing graphghans a couple years ago. EVERY TIME I start a new one, I come back to this video for a refresher. It is concise, and detailed. I can see every step. Maybe someday the instructions will be locked in my brain for that setup row, but today’s not the day. I also recommend it whenever someone wants to do a graphghan. It’s so much less complicated than doing CTC.

    Try the wide single crochet, I'm hooked on it for graphs... I can't think of the lady who I am questing came up with it.. the front and the back are the same so what you do on the front side you do on the back side, you can carry your yarn or drop it. And for the color change it's neat neat.. very clean.. Which I was so happy to find. Where she shows it is on a bag with cat heads. Little zip up bag or purse. I need to learn how to make a video. When I find her page I'll share and you can check it out. Just thought I would share
    Also, I found a bag of my grandmother's perm rods the ones with the elastic cord that plugs in other end to hold hair in... I tried for holding my yarn , works great you can even clap stick them to your work.. I wonder if I'm the only one who dies that. 🙂

    Hi Terri! Wonderful tutorial...thank you so much for sharing it! I do have a question. I notice at the beginning of the row, we do not count the initial chain that counts as a double crochet. but at the end of the row, I have exactly enough stitches per my graph. Should I not have one extra stitch at the end as well?

    • @YarnjoyPodcast
      @YarnjoyPodcast  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you chain and turn your work at the end, you created the turning chain. You don't have the extra chain until you are ready to turn. I like to chain first then turn my work. Others like to turn their work first and then make a chain. Either way will work.

    • @YarnjoyPodcast
      @YarnjoyPodcast  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have never tried it but I supposed you could. You would have to change the number of chains for the turning chain on the end. 2 chains for hdc and 1 chain for sc. You could do a test swatch to see how it turns out.

    • @ashleymartin1655
      @ashleymartin1655 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @YarnjoyPodcast thank you for that explanation so if I did hdc would the foundation chain be my number of boxes (66) * 3 which gives me 198 plus 2 or do i do plus 3 since you start with the 3rd chain from the hook (skip the first 2 ch sts)?

    • @YarnjoyPodcast
      @YarnjoyPodcast  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Leave the height as it is. One row per square. For example, if your image is 90 squares high, then your finished project will have 90 rows of block stitch. Just remember that for each row of block stitch, you have a set up row for it. I explain this in the tutorial. What image is your project going to have? I bet it will look awesome!

    • @YarnjoyPodcast
      @YarnjoyPodcast  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Hilda, glad you liked my video. Yes, you count the number of squares you have multiply by 3 and then add 4. So if your chart has 92 squares, it would be 92 x 3 + 4 = 280 chains that you will start with. You add 4 because it is for turning chains. Your design will end up with 1 extra DC or ch 3 on each side of your design.

    I have a big question I hope you can help me. I have been looking for how to do a mini block stitch working the same way. but can't find anything. Do you work the same way but instead of 3 dc do you do 2 hdc in each block and is it still using the same math as of adding the 4 chains so if the regular block is number of blocks x 3 + 4 . I am guessing the mini is number of blocks x 2+4. Hope I got that right. I was also wondering if you could do a video on mini blocks with a graph so I can see how to do it. Thank you.

    • @YarnjoyPodcast

    Can any graph pattern be changed into a C2C stitch?

    • @YarnjoyPodcast
      @YarnjoyPodcast  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think so. It just depends on how big the chart is. Doing c2c or the block stitch with a graph enlarges it quite a bit since each block on the graph would be the equivalent of 3 stitches doing c2c or block stitch.

  • @bookaholic36

    • @YarnjoyPodcast
      @YarnjoyPodcast  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on the stitch pattern that you are using. For example, regular Corner to corner stitch has 3 stitches in the block. A mini Corner to corner stitch has 2. Of course, you can do it both ways and see how you like it. Thanks for watching! :)

      @@mouniraabdallamusa2480 If you want to do single crochets instead of the block stitch, you would just have 134 stitches across. So you would chain 134 plus 1 for a turning chain. You would then single crochet in the 2nd chain from you hook ending up with 134 stitches across. I have a color changing tutorial for a basic single crochet graphgan. In this type of work, how do you know how many inches per block?

    • @YarnjoyPodcast
      @YarnjoyPodcast  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could do a small swatch of a multiple of the blocks that you need for the full pattern and measure it. For example, if your full chart has 60 squares you could do a swatch of 6 squares across and after your second row you can measure the length of it and multiply that number by 10. That should give you an estimate of how wide the finished piece will be. Hope this helps.

    • @YarnjoyPodcast

      No you would chart out the letters of the words normally. But if you are right handed, then you would follow the chart from left to right when you are doing the set up row, then right to left when you are making the dc blocks.

      Did you make a dc in the 4th chain from the hook? That dc you make in the beginning is the first one that you count. Not the ch3 on the edge. Remember you are making 3 dc per square on your chart. So your first row should have the ch 3 on the edge and then 267 dc stitches across.

      Yes I chained the 271 and double crocheted in the 4th chain.so should I have 89 blocks like the graph when the first row is done.

      @@joanngarman7453 Technically, the first row is just a dc row. The blocks are not formed until you finish row 2 which is the set up row for the second row of blocks on your chart. At the end of row one, you should have 267 dc stitches not counting the ch 3 that was formed on the edge when you made your first dc. On row 2, you ch1, turn and sc in the first dc ( which was stitch number 267 from row 1). Then you sc in between stitch number 267 and number 266 from row 1. Then continue on with the set up row.

    I don’t understand the set up row. Why is it necessary?

      It gives you the loops for where you put the blocks in. Also it allows you to read the chart from a single direction.

    Why do you need to do 3x and add 4?

    • @YarnjoyPodcast
      @YarnjoyPodcast  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Each block on the chart is 3 stitches. Then you add 4 for 1 additional stitch on the edge and a turning chain.

    Hi Terri! Wonderful tutorial...thank you so much for sharing it! I do have a question. I notice at the beginning of the row, we do not count the initial chain that counts as a double crochet. but at the end of the row, I have exactly enough stitches per my graph. Should I not have one extra stitch at the end as well?

      When you get to the end of the row and make the last block, you then also put a dc in the very last stitch before you make the turning chain and turn. So the turning chain and the last stitch which is a dc by itself are the end stitches.
