    Wow!!! That is totally insane!! I can't believe how cheap these were. Even if they need a couple thousand in work it is worth it. I would have definitely bought that 32" power boat. i'll have to see if they have these auction near me.

    Wow, makes the prices they are asking at the yacht brokerage to seem outrageous. But, as boat owners find out, "it's not the buying, it's the keeping" that will cost you.

      An older 4 seat piper might only cost $30k but will cost $15k a year to fly and upkeep and hanger for a year.

      I suspect you are getting only slightly more than you are paying for. They are not sold via the owner because they need repairs and monthly slip fees are killing the owner. Who knows what kind of damage history they have. Just my suspicions.

    For those of you who don’t live here and are wondering why these prices are so cheap it is because there is absolutely positively no more spaces available for them to park! The waiting list around here now is approximately 6 to 7 years to get a slip. You might encounter some small ocean side ports in the middle of no place ... but you have to drive 100 miles or so and pay out the nose. Some of these people who buy this boat or ones like it will strip any good parts and then tow it out and scuttle it by using an ax to sink it.

    • @CaptainAction
      @CaptainAction  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, there are slips available for most sizes. But yeah, getting the slip might take some time as the City only gives you 10 days to remove the boat. Best to have a slip lined out. Liveaboard slips do take the time you mentioned. Yes, driving is a PIA as 100 miles here might take 3-4 hours ;) Ummm, scuttling....well, I have seen it happen and they didn't even take the good parts off!

    • @SaltyReels
      @SaltyReels 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CaptainAction @Captain Action How can you reserve a slip if your not sure the size of boat you'll get? I'm in cali and have been looking for a liveaboard with a full time liveaboard slip from which I understand one has to have proof of income to rent a liveaboard slip...

      @@CaptainAction I bet you anything you see much higher prices when they resume. Covid had driven the price of boats and RVs through the roof as people view them as safer for vacations than hotels. And even people who aren't worried about Covid safety have been severely restricted in their travel by international travel restrictions, cruise line not sailing and air travel restrictions. The market is now a serious sellers market and will likely stay that way until sometime next year or the year after. I've been looking at either a new RV or boat for the last 12 months and it has been extremely frustrating as inventory has dried up and the price on everything has shot up.

    • @CaptainAction
      @CaptainAction  ปีที่แล้ว

      Many of these boats need a lot of work to make them seaworthy. The bigger issue here in western USA is finding a place to put the boat. Slips are expensive, moorings unavailable, no anchorages, and no shipyards with storage :/

    Of course it wasn’t about the money was it? There’s a Marina or two having a clear out and buyers looking for a ‘project’. There’s a ‘learning curve’ in there for one or two, I’m sure, but at least an abandoned boat gets a new lease of life and that’s got to be good.

    A small fiberglass sailboat for cheap would be the way to go. Easy to tow; take it home to refurbish, and then launch/slip it in any decent size lake to learn how to sail it. Wind powered with perhaps only a small fuel-efficient or electric motor for maneuvering in port gives it some resilience to Bidenomics.

    • @CaptainAction
      @CaptainAction  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Totally on point for the small recreational sailor or someone just starting into the hobby. Depending on your geography, trailer able boats and even smaller boats are a great way to go. In many more rural marina settings too, haul out and being on the "hard" can allow refitting and storage for much less than a typical marina slip in an urban setting. this would be great in places where boating is seasonal.

    so are these boats going so cheap because new buyers have to pay back fees or tickets or taxes on these boats????¿

    • @CaptainAction
      @CaptainAction  ปีที่แล้ว

      No, what you see is what you get. No back taxes or marina fees. Starts when you buy the boat. The big issue here, is that it cannot stay in the city marina for 6 months. There are private marinas nearby. Having a slip available is the big problem with buying an auction boat.

  • @ashleighelizabeth5916
    @ashleighelizabeth5916 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    So the issue here is having to get it away from that dock within a certain timeframe and having somewhere to put it. And the the real work begins of fixing years and years of neglect. He said that Morgan that went for about $5K later sold for $40K but how many 10s of thousands of dollars were put into getting it habitable and in good condition and how much yard time had to be paid to get it done? I think it's an amazing concept but in Cali where mooring and marina space is at a premium I can see why these boats sell for next to nothing.

    • @CaptainAction
      @CaptainAction  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      He put a little more than $8000 into it plus slip fees for about 6 months. This opportunity to find a boat in that good of condition is very rare. He also had a love of old boats. It was running the next day. Did some water damage repair, cushion replacement, and a good general cleaning. Maybe made $15k at best. Many try flipping these boat with pretty mixed results. It only really works if you have your own slip.

      Back before the auctions got popular, boats went cheaper than today. The guy bidding on the and who bought it was pretty cool and was looking to upgrade his liveaboard. Others at the auction didn't want to up-bid so he could get it at a reasonable price :) Also, there is a stipulation that you cannot slip an auctioned boat at the city marinas for 6 months. There are only a few private marinas that can accommodate sailboats. He already had a slip outside the city. But yeah, this was probably one of the top 3 best deals I have seen at the auction.

    Just like the 1 euro homes in italy, you are buying an obligation to spend a lot of money.

    Those boats for a dollar are nice but try to rid yourself of it and see what a disposal fee is.

    • @ashleighelizabeth5916
      @ashleighelizabeth5916 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      EXACTLY!!! The prices sound good but if you don't have a cheap place to work on it while you repair it... or strip it for parts, and you don't have a cheap way to dispose of it once you are done with it....

      Some of that is the buyers not wanting to drag it out I noticed, but yes he does. And I would too because these prices are literally pennies on the dollar for somebody who knows how to get boats like this in to good working order and has the time and the money for parts to do it.
