FALL BOAT AUCTION 2023: Where to buy a SUPER CHEAP sailboat! - EP31

  • Here in Long Beach, CA at Alamitos Bay Marina we have a boat auction twice per year. Come with me and watch people bid on sailboats and power boats. This time the bidding goes nuts; some boats sell for a lot and some don't get a bid at all even though the opening bid at the auction for "boats in the water" is only $400.
    These boats are usually in pretty bad shape but this time there was one sailboat, a Cal 46, that was in really good condition and the selling price was on par.
    Last auction a lot of sailboats didn't get a bid or sold for very cheap but this auction was different because more sailboats sold at this auction.
    This was a fun boat auction to watch but the inventory was a little low if you ask me. I've seen a lot more sailboats at past auctions so be sure to subscribe if you want to know when the next auction is happening and see my next boat auction video.
    Thanks for watching! - Andy & Misty

    The Islander 32 for $950. is a good deal, lots of wiggle room for repairs. The Parker is a sought-after boat, the motors alone would be worth at least the final bid or more. Great fun Andy, Thanks.

    Good morning,
    My name is Frank and I come from Germany.
    I saw your films about the boat auction and found it very interesting. I particularly liked the Catalina 30 sailboat.
    I have now seen that they are also available Catalina in 36 and 42.
    Boats like this are often up for auction.
    Or similar boats.
    Best regards Frank

      Hi Frank, there are usually Catalina 30’s at the auction because Southern California is the epicenter where that boat was manufactured. There are a lot around here. However, I have yet to see any 36’s or 42’s at the auctions. Nobody knows what the inventory will be until the day of the auction.

    Hey Andy! Thanks for another auction video.
    A simple enough question (he says, lol).... Would you think it foolish to fly in from South Africa to attend one of these auctions in the hopes of buying a viable sailboat? Something in the 30ft range would suit me well. I realize there are SO many variables to that answer, but I'm (very) not wealthy, I want to sail, and everything here is just stupid prices. $1000 I could manage, hell, probably even $5k total budget. I would obvz do all the work myself. What other costs would be involved? I remember from the last video that the boat must leave the marina within a week and so on, but what about titles, registration, certification etc? I anticipate it possibly meaning having a local friend purchasing on my behalf, in order to give time to do the necessary.
    If you could find time to make a basic breakdown in answer, I'd hugely appreciate it, as I'm sure would others. Otherwise I must move on and forget this dream. Thanks again.

    • @sailingsole
      @sailingsole  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Hello Maarten. Thanks for watching and your questions however you need to do your own research. All the links and phone numbers are at the end of the video so you need to call them and ask your questions to make your own decision. IMO, it would seem a little foolish to come all this way “in hopes” that everything would line up for you. If you have a place to take the boat and the time and money to refit it then it would work. If not then you will likely be caught in a bad situation. Again, do your own research to make your decisions. I wouldn’t want to kill your dreams but I don’t want to recommend a path that would be super difficult. Only you know what you are capable of.
      Good luck to you and I hope you find a vessel close to you to start your adventure. Cheers! 🤙🏼

    daaaamn dude...
    i would have gone up to $1,200 for the 1977 islander 32, and if i didn't get that i would have definitely snagged that 1971 Jensen 29 for $400. well i say definitely, but i would have wanted to feel that floor for myself and just get a look at it in person, but from what i could tell from your vid i would of taken it.
    disappointed i couldn't make it this time, but ill be there for sure next time!

    • @sailingsole
      @sailingsole  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Dang, I wish you were there to snag one of those. The floor on the Jensen wasn’t soft from rot, it was just flexing because the fiberglass pan wasn’t super thick. I’ve felt one of those before and it felt exactly the same so I think it’s just how they are. For a day sailer / weekender it was definitely worth $400. Probably would make a good lake boat. Oh well, next time! 👊🏼

    • @PKAdventures
      @PKAdventures 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@sailingsole well i think i would probably end up beefing up the floor some, because my goal is to do some ocean crossings and such. i want to move to the Philippines, then use that as my home base for sailing adventures. that's the end goal. so even if a boat like that isn't the best choice for the trip there, it would still be a good first boat to learn on, fix up, then sell to buy something a bit more capable after i have some experience.
      that's what i'm thinking anyways.
      hopefully i can find something like that at the auction in March

    The Trawler is a Grandbanks and its a tragedy that it was neglected to that degree but as a person who restored a Trawler once before i don't blame people for not wanting to bid on it especially if it was a pre 72 plank hulled Grandbanks. I couldn't determine if it was plank but if it was that would explain all the water in the builges. At anyrate it would cost way more than its worth to restore in the condition it is in.

      well, if one was a you tube influencer and had a few Grand to get it started and the You Tube fan club kicked in (it would be rebuilt with lots of sweat of course) by donations .
      Several couples do this and then flip the boat for some good coin.
      Anyways, I agree it was a shame it was neglected to the point.
      So, the boat did sell or did it go to the breakers ?

    • @lincfranse4968
      @lincfranse4968 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      It's too far gone, Grandbanks we're plank hulled up till 1972 in 73 they started laying them up in fiberglass if it was plank it's most likely got dry rot in the planks and it's probably extensive and if it is fiberglass it could be blistered from stem to Stern with baseball sized blisters if that's the case it would have to be totally stripped and re apoxied from bow to Stern and if it's plank then the dry rotted planks would have to be replaced by a boatyard that knows how to work on a plank hull because not all of them will.that alone would be a deal breaker the water in the bulge isn't good it could have dry rotted the stringers even if that was the only thing wrong it would be a deal breaker. It most likely hasn't been hauled in over a decade i bet the zincs have been gone for a long time so shafts and struts could be eaten away from electrolysis that includes all of the thru hull fittings . It's probably been in an uncovered slip for years so the decks and cabin are probably rotted and soft too. The teak decks probably have screws that go through the under deck and rain water probably has leaked in possibly right on top of the steel fuel tanks maybe rusting the top of the fuel tanks that alone would be another deal breaker. Who knows what shape the engines are in they may have had to tow it to the auction dock we don't know Then there's the wiring and then the hydraulics for the steering all this would have to be checked . Another thing to think about with a boat like that is in order to get a slip in a marina the boat has to be insured and I think no insurance company is going to insure that boat in that condition another thing is that a lot of marinas now don't want wood hulled boats in their marinas anymore especially plank hulled because when the caulking goes bad they leak and sometimes sink right in the slip at least it's that way in a lot of marinas here on the west Coast.i just sold a 36 ft trawler two years ago that I did extensive work to I did most of the work myself fuel tank replacement was just one of many of the projects it was super hard to do and super expensive. Basically what I'm saying about that Grand Banks in that condition is that I wouldn't take it if they gave it to me. It would take way more than it's worth in time and money to make it right again. The ONLY way it could possibly be done is if they gave it to a highly skilled boatwright that had access to a boat yard for free and he did all of the work himself and even at that he would be super lucky to break even if he sold it after he was done. He'd be better off paying market price for a run able decent shape fixer upper that only needed a few minor things. It Ain't worth it. Remember some of the most expensive boats are the free ones.

    • @53Peterbilt
      @53Peterbilt 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@lincfranse4968 there are a few folks out there who own older Grand Banks, so what about scooping this up and parting it out?
      I'd bet between all the hardware, running gear, and planking, a person could do pretty good.
      The hard part would be finding the yard where you could do all the disassembly and salvage work.
      btw...those Parkers have a huge cult following, especially here in the PNW. Smoking deal on that!

    Well I was wrong; I think I called the Islander 32 a 28. I guess I was thrown off by the angle it was shown at in the last video.
    Oh boy, more worthless trivia, some of which is probably wrong:
    The Grand Banks 42, even tho it's all teak, looked like a money pit. Pretty far gone.
    The Cal 46 looks like a "home-built" (finished) version bc of the salon windows, which are fewer and bigger on the production version, the layout (alley galley), and things like the combination of a "bottle gooseneck w/ a solid vang, which are sometimes considered incompatible. Bottle goosenecks can bend solid vangs. The engine (Perkins blue) looks like it has had some money already spent on it.
    At 8:22 you can see the Schaefer "Foot Blocks" on the quarter rail are mounted backwards, which was a surprisingly common mistake people made back then. The smaller turning block on the coaming, by the winches, is mounted frontwards but still does not fill the bill for a decent lead to a winch. Looks like the red line is a pole lift, and for off-the-wind sailing she's got it goin' on with that whisker pole. What is missing is an "over-the-top" turning block to get past the coaming edge; these were introduced by Schaefer after this boat was built. Extra points for Not having a mainsail that furls inside the mast, as that would destroy this boat's balance and ability to point.
    This and many other Cal 46's didn't have decent travellers but in this case is redeemed by the most excellent mainsheet-preventer combo on the back end of the boom. This combination (double mainsheet) will do anything that a traveller will do, only more safely, but more slowly.
    The reel winch on the main halyard is pretty flintstone, but 100% useable. It's a different animal, but not what I would call dangerous. We grew up using these things and they are not all that difficult to use except in heavy air, especially while reefing, when they can be spooky. Never a good choice for sending someone aloft, but the Andersen self-tailers on the mast and control console are pretty nice upgrades.
    This Cal 46 (Built by Jensen Marine) and the Jensen 29 (Cal 29) are from the same builder.
    The keel IS a long fin, and a cutaway as well. These 46's had spade rudders, but some may have had skegs, just like not all Cal 40's were straight spades, but upgraded (imho) to skegs. Forefoot IS by definition, "cutaway". They may have called the long fin a "full keel" on the dope sheet but there's no forefoot and no deadwood, so I wouldn't.
    The 46 is modeled after a famous cruising boat named "Fram".
    ***
    The Jensen 29 is a pretty good boat; they came with atomic 4's. They are so ubiquitous they're cheap but durable. Yes the cabin sole is bouncy, but they don't break. On many Cal boats you can get the keel to start swinging back and forth by simply shifting your weight from side to side. This is Not a deficiency, this is an example of good engineering. If the hulls and keel were restricted from flexing or swinging (like with owner-installed transverse floors), they wouldn't be anywhere near as strong. The dumbest thing about these 29's was the cable supported (dinette back cushion) hinged companionway step. Not to go on and on about my fondness for this design, but there's a practically "Baja-ready" 29 up in Santa Barbara that any buyer would find is the sleeper of the year, and can be had for a song. Needs TLC. I am not financially connected in any way, btw. (am I allowed to say that?)
    Thanks Andy; and we always look forward to a Misty cameo appearance.
    Cheers!

      @sailingsole  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      As always Marty clocking in his sailing prowess. The Cal 46 was nice but seemed like a coastal cruiser just the same. Not sure I’d want to take that on a long passage from what I saw but I don’t know much about them like you do. I’ve never liked those Cal 29’s but after hearing what you had to say about them, their stock went up a bit. I’ll let Misty know! Till next time…! 🤙🏼

    Andy: It didn't look like anything was worth repairing for the most part. Unless you are an expert in boat repair, with wood, fiberglass, wiring, engines, and maritime regulations.

      I have a boat, I’m not looking to refit any of these boats from the auction. I’m just showing the auction for entertainment purposes. Fair winds! 🤙🏼

      Are you supposed to keep magazines after they’re old? 🤣
