  • If you are considering The Great American Loop, this boat will interest you for several reasons. First, she’s economical….1.5 -2 gal/hour at 7-8 knots. New Westerbeke 7.5KW generator
Second, she’s very safe. When you run aground, (and you will !) the steel keel has a 1 inch shoe to protect you, plus the prop is enclosed in the deep draft of the center keel.
This is a ‘character boat’ inside and out. The Douglas fir interior has the craftsmanship of a master finish carpenter. Arched beams. Beautiful cabinets. Meanwhile the exterior signals Classic due to a sheer that comes out of working boats of 100 yrs ago.
So, she’s economical, safe, salty, and affordable. She was custom-built and completed in 2013 in Duluth MN, and then did the loop. For the past several yrs she has be cruising the Gulf and currently moored in Longboat Key near Sarasota. The owners are seriously considering another “liveaboard” and must sell the current boat to afford the next purchase. The original build cost was $330,000 (documented in Passage Maker), and available for half that cost. Great value for a reasonable price.

Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. We started out with Somnium, an O'day 272, moved onto Freebie, an Endeavour 32, and now are focusing on sailboat tours and working full time as teachers while we save up for our next boat.

I've watched several of your videos and this Trawler is definitely the best pick of the lot. A steel hulled craft this well built and cared for is rare for the price they're asking.

Now that’s a nice one. Looks beautiful. And as all metal boats all fitting should be welded. Bolting the deck fittings on a metal boat is as oxymoron. That Perkins is an excellent engine. Will go easily for 15-25000 hrs treated well. I’ve had them do it!

Lovely craftsmanship, looks like a great Looper boat. Noticed that they used an Atlantic Towers tower-in-a-box arch to support the aft end of the hard bimini. Pretty clever. Looks like a similar sized Back Cove downeaster is docked next door. By comparison, that of the same vintage would sell for around $750K, so you're right, this one is a relative bargain.

I was First LT on a WWII LST from 1959-61. When I saw the beautiful white paint--and especially the safety rails, I had a flashback to the hours of watching my crew chip and red lead and paint. The white is so nautical and beautiful, but what a project to keep a white steel hull and fittings un rusty.
It's very unique and the interior is beautiful. I was looking for a ladder from the flybridge to the salon, but no. Not fun in weather.
    That said, if I were a cruiser-----------------yum.

For the money, that is a good buy! One thing I didn't notice is whether it has A/C or not? One would think that would be important in a place like Florida.
That said, this would be a great boat for the Pacific NW. Steel hulls are the thing to have if you're going to do the Inside Passage or the Puget Sound area where there are logs in the water, or in the case of the Inside Passage where I live, there are glaciers you can visit but there are small ice bergs in the water.

I love fishing trawlers, most likely these or a nordic tug are what I would go with. Nothing fancy but can still be a nice outing yacht and workhorse when needed. This one regardless of price is quite unique. Colors seem quite dated and more set in 70s-80s style. Took me twice to realize she was built in 2013! Also for that price the engines better have low hours and the hull better be in great shape. Alot of abuse can happen from 10 years. Would definitely look for better values out there than this one. Plus I live in the Great Lakes so most likely this hasn't seen fresh water.

A lot of boat for the money, usually when you purchase these boats, you need to spend $50+ on updating and maintenance to make it more safe and usable. If I had to guess you probably wouldn’t need to do that on this. Even a Carver 10 years older of the same size would be twice the price. Only negatives are only one engine, I don’t know anyone with two engines who hasn’t lost the use of one of them at some point. Maybe worth adding an outboard get-home. Also electronic instruments now 10 years old with heavy icw use and they won’t be cheap to replace probably in the region of $15 to $20 K if you have it done professionally, maybe less if you can keep the old radar.

Solid boat but kinda not what I was expecting for the interior. ICW cruiser made of steel? don't have to worry about hitting logs! I didn't see any blown closed cell foam in the engine space. I'd be wary of a steel boat of this age without proper interior hull insulation. Condensation will rust a beautiful looking steel boat from the inside out.

I retired almost 8 years ago, my wife followed 2 years later. We both retired at age 62. So far we have not used any of our retirement money. How is that possible? Simple, when we retired we retired debt free. Your ability retire depends more on how much you owe than it does how much you have. You have a lifetime to plan. Just remember failing to plan is planning to fail.

There are a number of smart caveats in the comments. I didn't get far enough down to see if this was mentioned: that ladder to the upper deck is a concern. For young adults with good knees and strong arms and a good sense of balance it is 'just OK.' But for children, older adults, or anyone who has had two or more stiff drinks it looks like a genuine safety hazard. One slip and you could end up cracking your spine against a hard rail at the stern.
And you know the showy types or the drinking types will be launching themselves off that top deck; I just hope they clear the structures below. Also, am I the only person who thinks this boat is cramped for a 44-footer? There are unusual things about the layout that the original owners must have loved but that seem awkward to me. My final nit picking is about the lack of toe-rails to brace your feet against in a blow. To me this is more of a lake houseboat than a touring boat, especially with its single small engine.

I didn't see any doors on any cabins, or the head unless there was a pocket door. That kinda limits it to a single, couple, or a couple with small children that don't need privacy. It's a nice boat for sure, but it has a lot of space that could be used better for occasional guests.
I looked on the website and didn't see any bow thruster which would be great for a loop boat. I didn't see any info about draft, or air draft, or fuel and water tankage. The listing on the website is missing some important information. Since the owner previously did the Loop, at least we know it can make it through the shallow spots and low bridges.

A couple issues, number 1 is going to be insurance, since this is a home built? Might be an issue.
Clearly built with love and care, but glaring issues, the ladder to the "Flying Bridge" is too steep and is going to be a non starter for many, could have easily avoided by leaning it into the bedroom where there is space to spare.
Next is the lack of hand holds, especially going down to the galley. Try that in a seaway, youd have to crawl, dangerous and shows the lack of seagoing experience of the highly talented builder.
Also lack of grab rails in the spacious salon. Space is dangerous.
No helm seat at the lower helm! This is where you will be in rough weather and tire easily if you have to stand. Also grab rails again missing.
