6 years ago I got a really nice boat on a trailer 30 ft cabin cruiser missing its engines an outdrives for free from a property management company it was left in the building they owned. I ended up putting it in the ground and turning it into a hangout / guest house for my daughter and her friends it has working plumbing electrical and AC
I just got a very vintage 1982 Bayliner 2270 Explorer pilothouse style cruiser with a teakwood Alaskan bulkhead on the back nonrunning and after bringing it home it's just way too cool in the backyard as an outdoor room to even start thinking about actually getting it running and takeing it to the lake . How complicated was it to put it in the ground ?
@@randyscott3386 it was easy putting it in the ground I have a backhoe the only difficult part was figuring out the electrical an plumbing before I put it in the ground but when you don't care about the boat hull you can put holes anywhere you want to run wire and pipe makes it easy
As a boat builder of almost 40 years I would steer clear of that ocean. Looking like it might need a couple hundred thousand dollars of love. Cost a small fortune just to move it.
10 DAYS AGO boat yard start on my 42 chris-craft well bottom paint etc (fiberglass) estimate was 3k to 4k now it reach out almost 10k. Lets put one more 0 next to the Thousand..
And that acronym is applicable just to normal sized boats! Those size boats he's looking at are probably more like "bust out another 10,000" for everything he finds wrong lol
I'd probably spring for a boat with outboard motors. Easier maintenance. Those inboard motors are pain to get to and require dry docking to do any serious maintenance or repairs.
Fun thing to check out but I'm glad you resisted the urge to bid. Bottomless pits when they're running well, and uh these babies were in really rough shape!
You figure someone walked away from them there is a reason. Maybe you get the odd owner who passed away and it somehow got forgotten but for the most part walking away was the best move!
Sometimes boats sink from batteries dying during a rainy season from pumping the bilges...then they don't. Not always hull damage. Depending on the hull construction and core material there may be hidden damage. Mold is incredibly hard to remove and keep gone once it starts.
I knew the 31 Bertram would sell, that's a classic. I've always loved the Ocean Yachts Sportfishing boats. If I had a place to work on it, I would have bid on that.

Good video the first boat you went on the Ocean those are junk and early one's like that are known to have Stringer problems which is what holds the bottom of the boat together

Lots of us have years of experience with Sports fisherman's/ Convertibles and Cruisers. And all of us would say Survey Survey Survey. One thing I always want an opinion on is how much moister is in the fiberglass core and bulkhead. It's all expensive but engines are actually easy for me. Structural fiberglass repair makes or breaks a boat. Depends on value. Your values because no yacht is a financial investment for gains....
That lures going for a hundred bucks is enough to blow my brains out over that is amazing you should have climbed up on top of that if you wanted to see what a real boat is all about
Agreed, my father worked at the plant in ST Augustine around 1989-1990 and we lived on a sailboat my father built in the marina next to the factory. Beautiful boats
You never had a boat then. Boating is the best, yep comes with headaches, but a nice day on the water beats anything. I owned 3 boats and looking to get another
You caught me by surprise with this wonderfully put-together video! We have those gov't boat auctions here in southern Louisiana but not usually all marine in one location. The first vessel was the best for fishing the Gulf Coast anywhere from TX to FL and as someone who has been on a few flybridges ... once you have spent an outing up there, you never want to be sea level again. (Except for a large storm :-P) I am not what you call an offshore fisherman but the heightened flybridge on an intrepid sport fisher is the most relaxing yet commanding section of your vessel. If one is ever to be Captain of their own vessel, the flybridge provides such an open view of everything pertinent and naught. Great video! I would not have paid the $16k plus at this point in my life but for someone with deep pockets it def has serious value even with a complete double drive train replacement required ... if done correctly.
Everyone is dogging the boat. Yeah they need repairs. Yes your gonna have to find and buy things. I do it all myself. Or at least as much as I can. I love my boat. It gives me something to do.
These boats don't need as much work as what you think, if you want to refurb the whole thing, yeah that's a whole different sack of marbles. But just tart it up abit, take your time, buy some used accessories. As long as the engines are not seized up. Its doable on the cheap, relatively speaking. By the way, the Proline is not a centre console, that's a cuddy cabin walk around
After seeing what you know about boats you may get into a giant money pit. The sport fish is a diesel with direct drive and many very expensive issues. The Bayliner was a 30’ cruiser that looks like most do that are neglected. You have to be extremely careful as to what has been ignored. Freeze damage on neglected boats can really turn them into huge money pit. The one you thought had a Ford engine is actually a small block Chevy from Crusader Marine. For a novice boater you just can’t even imagine the money and labor that can be involved in a boat like these. You’re usually are way ahead buying one that’s in good condition unless you love huge expensive projects.
What you were not thinking about is if it is holding water on shore, it sat at a parking space in the water for a long time, and rained on the boat, and no one pumped it out. As The batteries were probably dead, and would not automatically pump the boat if over a low amount of bilge water, as dead batteries. Then they took it out of the water to dry it out, see if they could see where ed the water came from. Thus giving you the ability to check it out, not in the water, and so it did not sink. Sure the motors may need work, as no one started them. As dead batteries no start, they could have charged them up, and tried to start them, and pumped it out. That looks nice inside. It's a glass boat so easy upkeep. Not much to have to fix, other than TV he motors. But maybe a serious hassle to fix the motors, or replace. You would need to get it running, and then it can be parked again on th ed water. A person needs to see where the water line Mark's are, as to see if They are the same height as the water line down in the bilge, as those marks on the motor. As some of the water dried up, or some got pumped by a portable pump.? I am thinking that allot or most of that water came from rain, or leaks around the exhaust, or drive shafts, maybe a tiny crack in the glass. ? I see it sold for $16,500. A steal, as the Electronics would cost that just to buy them alone. Fixed up, and running good, that's probably a $200,000. Or more value boat. Those motors would not cost much to fix, and fixing any water leaks. Its a glass boat, not a old wood boat, as its a easy maintenance boat if taken care of. Boats are expensive to own, fuel costs, dock parking costs. This is a boat for a guy that c AZ n take car ed of it himself, and to live on it, or a wealthy person that can afford to pay others to take care of it. I think its rain water that's getting into it. ? If I had the $ to have bought bid more, and bought it, and repaired it, I would have bought it. Nice Boat. I grew up doing Commercial Fishing, working on boats, fixing, and repairing with my dad. As he could do it all. Me, I was a gofer, hold this, do that. We were constantly repairing one of my dads wood boats. Glass boats are easy to maintain as hardly nada to do each year on them. That was a steal at $16,500. Nice stable wide boat. But, I would like more of a Alaskan Trawler design hull in glass, with more deck space, as so it can be used as a commercial fish boat to pay for its yearly costs, and some profits too. Plus these boat designs, usually have full access to the motor, or motors from out on the deck, with a big hatch, as so the motor could be pulled up, and out if need be. As most fish boats are designed that way, with more deck, and fish storage space, and less cabin space. We knew many fisherman that were commercial fisherman that lived on their boats from say April to October while fishing, & some lived on them full time. But the time off from fishing, they, cleaned, repaired, sanded and painted their boats. Lots of work, and costs on the up keep on old wood boats. Unless you do it yourself. We usually did all of own work, and if my dad had the time, he would some times help people out to repair their boat if they needed help. Diesel fuel was cheap back then, as today it's just rediculas. As today Diesel fuel is maybe 6 to 7 times the cost of when I was a kid. Probably hard to make a living fishing, with the fuel, upkeep, repairs costs, and dock space costs. There were a few deals at the end of the video. That one that needed the two missing out drives, that was a nice sport fishing boat, great buy at $2500. That was maybe a $150,000. or more to buy it new.? As those last few boats were a good deal. That one with twin Cummins diesel motors for $100. Super deal too. Good Luck.
The Proline was a bargain, rip the motors out, add on an outboard mount on the transom and throw a couple of outboards on it and you've got a decent boat for a good price
Unless you're rich stay 20' and under. The slip rates go up over 20' and 20' is easy to take anywhere and can go anywhere from lakes to off shore in good conditions.
If you don’t know a lot about boats you probably shouldn’t be bidding on boats this size. You won’t believe the costs of owning/maintaining these things. Get surveys first in any case. Be careful buddy.
I want one of those boats for those prices....maybe one day for now I need to do something about the two small boats parked in back of my yard forever! Lol!
To saddle yourself with a project boat every year only to sell or give it away at summers end after all the money, work, pain and stress of getting it shipshape is NOT my idea of a good time. Cheaper and less hassle to stay in a beach hotel all summer and rent or charter boats. Do you want to pay for a second job, which is what buying a project boat is, or pay for an enjoyable labor and stress free vacation.
Those are 220 horse Chevy 350s.... Marine ised by crusader......and I did not see freshwater cooling on those motors so those maybe saltwater cooled motors got to watch out for head gaskets blowing out on those things
Had to come visit, thought NO WAY is this guy buying a boat he is way to smart for that ...... isn't he? LOL talk about rolling the dice any of these ole boats is a risky venture BUT bought at the right price with a bit of luck .... who knows? I will say if I had the space to dry dock it and work on it I would definitely buy a good ole sport fishing boat similar to the first one you showed.
Perhaps the boat became economically unfeasible to keep and they just abandoned it. None of these boats look particularly mechanically seaworthy and boat mechanics are few and expensive. They probably thought it wasn't worth the effort of trying to sell a boat that needs major work.
Glad y’all enjoyed your time together with your Dad !

Some rad boats in there!
Nice change of pace, Chris!
Good stuff, liked the first boat, good retirement project for me. Gettin it Downunda'd be a prob though.
Well guess what I've been doing it for 45 years...... Silverton and Carver are the two sons of old man lures
Unless you're rich stay 20' and under. The slip rates go up over 20' and 20' is easy to take anywhere and can go anywhere from lakes to off shore in good conditions.
Thank you for showing us this
If you don’t know a lot about boats you probably shouldn’t be bidding on boats this size. You won’t believe the costs of owning/maintaining these things. Get surveys first in any case. Be careful buddy.
As they say…there are two great days for a boat owner…the day you buy it and the day you sell it!
good luck finding a marina that lets you dock non-functional boats for the summer. those fill up fast and are few.
Nice to watch
This is even better than cars!!
Good video. Cool boats. I was interested in that first one that did not sell.
Buy the Bayliner. the neighbors would love you. park it in the garage, next to the Greenbrier
You would be surprised how those babies would clean up . The engines run forever because who has time for a boating life full time
Your dad is a smart man wow!!!!
Thank you for sharing.
An interesting video, but the poor audio quality kills it :/
Most people are absolutely clueless about what they are getting into. And the cost, energy, time, effort, money, your life cost.
I wonder how much money the original owners lost on these boats. Why wouldn’t they pay their docking fees?
Perhaps the boat became economically unfeasible to keep and they just abandoned it. None of these boats look particularly mechanically seaworthy and boat mechanics are few and expensive. They probably thought it wasn't worth the effort of trying to sell a boat that needs major work.
That 40 footer diesel sell for 80 to 150k in my country, if the engines are running maybe more
