    aha! I knew it.
    Oil salvaging issue. You may need a collector and evac pump if you are going uphill back to the main oil reservoir. Normally gravity takes care of it, but this is a dry sump with the reservoir up high and the turbochargers below it.
    Not to mention, you shall now and forever be called FRABBY!

    • @sail4horizon
      @sail4horizon 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      This is my bet too. Since this oil line is lower the dry sump is just sucking from the other side and the oil is pooling in the lower line. Path of least resistance. Tavarish, if you can level the Y it might be enough to balance the flow & drain both turbos equally.

    • @tavarish
      @tavarish  6 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      That's what I'm thinking. Also I'm increasing the diameter after the Y. I think it's too much of a restriction to go from 2 10ANs into one.

    • @billhall1555
      @billhall1555 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yes I agree with both replies here. Flatten or level the T also try to make sure both lines are higher than the T so gravity will pull oil to the T and not into one of the lines.

      Might be worth the effort to inserting a tee into the supply and return lines, popping on a gauge and seeing what is actually happening

    • @sail4horizon
      @sail4horizon 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Or put the T fitting directly at the dry sump and run both turbos to that so it can't favor one over the other as easily. What I don't know about the dry sump on this car is if that's actually a suction connection or just a tank. If it's just a reservoir then nothing can be lower than that connection since it's only gravity drain from the turbos. Bigger hoses won't help.

    For the love of god and cars, DO NOT restrict the oil feed. 2 -10’s into a single -10 fit drainage is not near enough. Thicker oil may help, but the root of the problem is definitely the drain lines. Keep it up Freddy, you’re an inspiration to us all

      Spilly Built some turbos don't need a restrictor. Most do because the design of the center section. You have to restrict flow enough to not force oil through the seals. Also with most cars that don't have dry sump systems you need a restrictor. Seen quite a few people blow up their motors because they didn't have a restrictor. Starving the motor of oil. Had way more than big enough oil return.

    We have done quite a few rear mount twin turbo kits from a company that doesn't exist any more STS turbo systems on mainly Corvettes and Camaros. I own a heavily modified 300ZX twin turbo myself that I had to deal with this issue. The problem we ran into on almost every car was oil coming out the exhaust, and every time it was due to oil scavenging from the turbos. They did eventually produce a pump that would pump the oil out of the turbos which always fixed the issue. The "seals" in the turbo are more like piston ring seals and will not hold back oil that is sitting in the center section. I believe your issue is exactly what you are thinking... That oil line runs up hill in certain spots and the 90 on the end isn't helping either as well as the Y where the 2 lines come together. Just my $.02.

    • @madmarxcj7
      @madmarxcj7 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      But those vehicles were wet sump cars. This is a dry sump and already has a scavenge pump. The scavenge pump sucks the oil that is at the bottom of the engine and sends it to the external oil tank(sump). It cools a little there then a pressure pump sends it into the engine and pressure side of the turbos. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dry_Sump

    • @sjgoff
      @sjgoff 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      This is correct. I was just illustrating the point of how important oil scavenging from the turbos is. Any small issue with evacuating the center section will lead to oil seeping past the seals. The pump will pull from the path of least resistance.

    • @tbboardhed2
      @tbboardhed2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Steve Goff I'm with you. I had a sts turbo camaro and my original pump wasn't powerful enough to pump the oil back to the motor causing oil to "stand" in the lines giving a little blue puff on start up. I ended up going to a bigger pump and ran the pump for about 15-30 second after shut off and never had the problem again.
      Maybe a small savage pump here might help with the evacuation of the remaining oil after shut off.
      Just my. 02

    • @sharg0
      @sharg0 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also these turbos are mounted rather low which increases the issues.
      Another possible source is "the path of least resistance" - If it's easier to pull oil (air) from one turbo that side will take the majority of suction. To fit two scavange pumps (temporary) would be the sure way of eliminating the issue (assuming this is the source).
      Another reasonable easy thing to check if it hasn't been done is a compression test. An aluminium block without steel liners is rather sensitive. (On that note, is it the 5.2l engine? If so and if I'm not misinformed the block itself is identical to the one I had in my Audi S6 -07 (C6 gen) so that might be a cheaper way to get a spare block (moving parts are very different between Lambo/R8 and S6/RS6/S8). The 5.0 block is completely different.) When I think of it, no idea if the 5.0 block has steel liners or not.

    The turbos drain lines has to make the line with gravity, if it isn't flowing you can damage the seals, and appears that already happens, if you can't do the drain correctly make a catch can and one electric pump to make it flow correctly...

      Maybe smaller lines will create higher suction and flow. Its like when people put 3 inch exhaust on four bangers and it slows down exhaust flow,back pressure as people say, too much.

      @DonTHEhandsome1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ferrarini's Garage smaller lines equal higher pressure and flow rate. I don't think the T adapter or the routing of the lines matter. If there isn't a leak, there should be constant pressure throughout the system between the oil pump and pickup tube. Maybe he needs a better supply point for the oil if the pressure is too low to return the oil effectively to the pan.

      To me, building it means making the actual turbos too. This was a lot of work but the most crucial part was already made elsewhere. While I don't know anyone that's actually made a turbocharger, I do know someone that made their own supercharger from aluminum and steel stock. That's making something. This is assembling with some fabrication.
      *still cool

    • @funkyzero
      @funkyzero 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I just think you deserve more credit for it. A "kit" is (at least in my legacy head) something that someone else designed and sold to you as a bolt-on. It took countless hours to design all that ducting, not to mention the fab work. That's no kit man... you did the heavy lifting there (well... with the help of professional welder). If that were mine, I'd make sure everybody knew damn well that I did that myself and didn't buy it off a shelf. then again, I'm a show-off...

    Freddy, look up Venturi effect, which you can calculate, for the oil lines you've installed from your two turbos to your oil intake.
    The line coming out of your T-connection should be at least 75% greater in diameter/volume than sum total diameter of the two lines going into the T-connection. If it is not, you'll get back pressure into one or both of the lines going into the T-connection. If one of of the two lines is not the same length/volume, then you'll get an imbalance in pressure, which could have caused the turbo to leak on one side.
    I hope that helps.
    You're almost there! And I'm still here waiting to see it on the dyno! Back to the books for me. My study break is over.
    Keep up the good work!

    You need to fit a scavenge pump to pull the oil out the lines. Turbos are supposed to have gravity fed oil return lines. No wonder oil is backing up when it has nowhere to go.
    Any rear mount turbo systems should use scavenge pumps and check valves. Google rear mount turbo corvettes

    Hi Tavarish,
    I don’t own a twin turbo Lamborghini, however, I’m a senior Mechanical Engineering student with some background in fluids.
    Your solution of “two -10s into one -12” seems like it could work on the surface, but it depends on the pressures on each one of the inlets/outlet. If your mass flow rate of the oil in your outlet isn’t enough to keep up with what’s coming in, then you’re definitely going to experience a lot more back pressure than normal, which could be causing oil blow by in the seals, like you’ve mentioned.
    You could analyze your system using a series of Bernoulli’s equations on a T- junction/ Y junction with some approximate values to determine what outlet diameter you would actually need to keep the oil pressure in the turbos at a sensible level. Just my two cents.
    Cheers

The flow on them could be improved so much more by a nice set TIG welded and properly purged so there is no sugar or excess penetration. Then you get a nice smooth pipe on the inside with none of that shit.

    Oil burning issues is as many already commented probably caused by that upphill sektion on the plumbing, they might need scavenging pump.
    On a side note if i remembered correct you drained the fuel and filled with premium, what if that flexfuel sensor is stuck on e85, that would make some smoke (30% to fat probably)

    You may want to try a scavenging pump for the turbo. Going from a 10 to 10 y block to a 10 go 12 y block is a good idea.
    Idling the car shouldn't be an issue. Make sure you have good crankcase vacuum. I have a similar issue with my car.

      You are absolutely on target. The crankcase should always have slight negative pressure (vacuum) and the turbos gravity drain. Any positive pressure in the drains will restrict the flow. Catch tank and pump, with large diameter drain pipes.

    • @morcs1522
      @morcs1522 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The dry sump system has exactly that as tavarish said.
      As one stage of the pump is a scavenge stage.
      Agree with the tank idea i have been mucking around with an under bed (ute/pickup)mounted turbo system and certainly helped running a small tank to reduce the smoke after a power hit.
      My theory is the oil is very aerated /foamy after the turbo and doesn't want to flow well.
      Catch tank gives the oil some time to "regroup" and have a chance to be pumped or drain away.
      Smoking on startup at idle is another issue unless it was already hot and oil in the housing already.

    • @FinishLineFactory
      @FinishLineFactory 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Morcs I'm not certain about dry sump systems, but I do know that the scavenging pump is explicitly for he engine sump, and he may need a scavenging pump just for the turbo.

    Rule number one of a power adder is no matter how much you want to drive it with boost, you never drive it until you take it for a tune. You can ruin rings with a single pull on boost if not tuned. Also the end gaps on the rings could be set wrong or set for high boost which can cause oil burn on and engine with some miles like yours with the turbo kit from before. Not sure about lambos but what about worn valve guides.

    You need to upsize the T or Y to the 12AN first. Otherwise that will then become your restriction.

  • @TommyAventador
    @TommyAventador 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Its the Y fittings and how you connect it also that can be the problem. The bottom of the Y section should be the one thats connected to the oil plug, and the top 2 section of the Y should be connected to the turbos. He has the top left side of the Y fitting connected to the Left side turbo, and the top right side of the Y fitting to the return oil plug, so the oil isn’t going to flow correctly. The turbo lines need to be flowing to a central point and out with no restrictions. But thats just 1 thing, there could be many other factors such as too much restrictions and he might need to just have 2 seperate return lines.

    I have some turbo experience as back in the 80's I turbocharged a pinto in my garage when I was 16. If your turbo was leaking oil internally you should see a mist inside your intake runners and possibly buildup in the intake. I recently did an oil change on my 911 and had about a 1/2 of a quart too much and it started smoking at every startup. Just a thought, check into oil level.

    One of the best things about following this build, apart from watching the actual progress, is reading the informed viewer comments, I am actually learning a lot about cars here. When I first noticed the smoke, every time you fired up the engine on its first run, I was thinking valve stem seals, or possible oil getting past the rings. I knew nothing about turbos and the fact that they could be the cause of burning oil.

    Too soon for the oil to start burning on star up. I would still check the exhaust manifold pcv valve. Those valves have weak silicone membranes and will burn oil immediately at start up. The oil leak at the turbo maybe related to all Lamborghinis and Ferraris catching on fire at stop lights.

    • @ceesmouthaan4748
      @ceesmouthaan4748 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oil burning on startup is the number one symptom of oil leaking in to the cylinders while idle. Most often it is leaky valve guides.
      In an earlier video it clearly showed smoke blowing out of the exhaust at startup. That can only be from oil being burned as part of combustion.

    • @texas0bserver729
      @texas0bserver729 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No,also post combustion in the turbos can cause smoke.

    • @IlistentotheRadioRadioStereo
      @IlistentotheRadioRadioStereo 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Darren Hughes Good point but guess what goes before the post exhaust turbos??? The exhaust pcv valve. Just saying it does not hurt to look at it. All BMWs and Audis have that problem and since Lamborghini is owned by Audi who knows what engine parts they are using to build their engines. Check videos on BMW 540i m62 engine smoking at startup or the new Audi A7 smoking at startup. Audi knew for a long time and offered a recall to either replace the valve or the engine if it got damaged. The membranes for the exhaust pcv valve on either cars are built to fail at certain milage or if the driver keeps playing around revving up the engine.

    what I've seen done on twin turbo dry sumps is where the two return lines meet, they put a tank with 1 line that goes to the pump to act as a sump for the turbo return as you have to remember adding two turbos to a na dry sump you could be adding an extra 2-3 quarts of oil so that oil has to go somewhere.. it'll find a way to the least pressure. be it cylinder walls or turbo seals.

    Just a suggestion (disclaimer I havent built a turbo kit or anything) although adding a little canister below the turbo or at the Y connector of the turbo oil return lines, basically as an extra drip tray. Getting rid of any back pressure or pressure in general allowing time for the system to move the oil so it doesnt overflow the turbo system. I saw this done on the channel "Thehoonigans" on the video of the centre seat twin turbo porche if youd like to see how they achieved it, also too to get more information if youre interested!

    i'd double check with borg warner on the oil feed pressures, usually journal bearing turbos don't need restrictors but maybe this specific design requires it. More likely I'm thinking the oil drain is not sufficient, everything you said was spot on however i'd look at making a small gravity fed reservoir to catch the oil first...then let the suction from the sump system suck it back up. good luck with the project!

Also if the engine was built for this type of harsh duty it will have forged pistons and possibly looser tolerances so I’m not sure if you’ve actually gotten the car up to temperature to see how it runs after that. Also, how much abuse has the car had since the original build, if the car was doing 0-200 pulls constantly I’m not sure how long an engine will go if that’s all it’s had since the build. Maybe a couple of years???? Good luck and keep it up
