    Tonya was the first woman to complete a triple axel in the short program, and she was the first ever to complete a triple axel combination with the double toe loop. Tonya was also the first woman to land two triple axel jumps in the same competition, and went on to become an Olympian. The triple axel, normally performed by male ice-skaters, to my knowledge only eight female ice-skaters have successfully landed the triple axel in international competitions - and Tonya is one of those eight. No matter how she is remembered in the history of figure ice-skating, these accomplishments can never be taken away from her.

Send in the Clowns.....BEAUTIFUL piano and she WORKED it OUT! THEN Tone Loc?! WHAAAAT??!!! LOL!!! It's called "ORIGINALITY." and SO very few people have it and stand by it. SHE HAS IT! And by the same token, I contend that Robert Franklin Stroud (the Birdman of Alcatraz) should’ve been awarded an honorary doctorate for his many contributions in the field of ornithology - specifically to avian pathology, in spite of how he is remembered in history. Parenthetically, Stroud could still be awarded such a honorary degree - posthumously.

    This makes me sad because she was so talented and clearly could have gone so much farther than the others. We all have a Nancy Kerrigan in our lives who shows up with more money, better clothes and prettier makeup and cancels out all of our hard work. This could have been a true underdog story and it's so sad that it turned out the way that it did. Neither of them had a very happy ending.

    • @chooseyourpoison5105
      @chooseyourpoison5105 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Well, Kerrigan did go on to win the Olympic silver medal, largely on the sympathy factor, so she came as close to a happy ending as she was ever likely to get. I just wonder why Tonya felt she had to do what she did - she'd already beaten Kerrigan fair and square at the Worlds prior, and there was no reason to think she wouldn't do it again - Kerrigan wasn't even a threat to her; the only people who could have unseated Tonya were Kristy Yamaguchi or Oksana Bauel, the eventual gold medal winner. It was pointless and such a waste.

    • @SuziwongCreationsAu
      @SuziwongCreationsAu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      "I just wonder why Tonya felt she had to do what she did - she'd already beaten Kerrigan fair and square at the Worlds prior..." - Tonya didn't do anything to Nancy. All Tonya did that was illegal was to fail to inform authorities about what she found out about her husband's involvement after the fact. Her lifetime ban was largely a kneejerk reaction from the skating federation regarding all the negative media that skating was getting. In the end Tonya was a scapegoat and ironically figure skating became popular after all of the notoriety. A lifetime ban is one hell of a price to pay for not telling authorities about after the fact information regarding the instigator.

    • @emerybayblues
      @emerybayblues 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@Itsthomas99 People think Nancy Kerrigan was well off. She came from a working class family. The difference between her & Tonya is her parents were married, Nancy's mother was a sympathetic figure being legally blind and having to lean close to the tv to watch Nancy skate and the family demeanor in general was reticent. Therefore there was this assumption that the kerrigans were well off.

    • @kathlimb
      @kathlimb 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Nancy didn't have money, she was just perceived as "classier" because she came from a two parent home and she had that Ballerina/New England Preppy Princess look that America wanted from its female figure skaters at the time. Tonya had an abusive childhood and a more tomboy-ish look, which sadly at the time got her labeled as "trashy" :(

    I remember this on tv!! Tonya Harding worked her ass off to be the best regardless of the life she was handed. I wish she hadn't gone back to Jeff. If she can see the comments I hope she knows people everywhere was so proud of her skating. ❤

      I've often thought of Tonya and had similar thoughts: I hope she reads the comments, because she sure does have a lot of fans who admire her deeply, even 2+ decades later!

    I agree with you 100%. I have yet to see any female skater fly across that ice like she does, with such athleticism. And pretty graceful too!

    That's a gold medal skater right there. Her past,the way she was raised, was the reason for her to feel like Nancy was better . I would have much rather my kids to have seen a smiling,appreciative girl at a Disney appearance than someone who totally came across as spoiled ,put out ,and entitled as Nancy did for that well- paid appearance.For Tonya, It's one of those things in life where you lie with dogs,you pick up their fleas. After all these years, and seeing the story behind this woman, I would have forgiven her of this if it happened to me,but of course I can see how someone who thinks making an appearance for her fans,and young aspiring skaters at Disney is stupid such as Nancy did,I can see where she'll never receive any forgiveness. To me, a true champion takes the worst,copes,and moves on and becomes a better person. I see that in Tonya.

      sless milani I agree with you. I actually do believe Tonya when she said that she knew about the planned attack but was too frightened of her violent husband to come forward. Given that he has since been in continual trouble with the law and has been in and out of jail since, her story has the uncomfortable ring of truth.

    • @slessmilani
      @slessmilani 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** agree...I think her husband didn't want to chance anything and he wanted to make things absolute. In his mind,Nancy goes down, Tonyas odds increase, and if she won,money and endorsements would follow. She had already beat her before, so it doesn't make sense she would organize such a thing. Also, she didn't need more added stress when training....and this added to it.

      ChooseYour Poison see my comment under Abby Lanes just below. ...I wish I could tag your name into it also because I had the same response for you both. I don't respond on TH-cam much so I'm not sure how to tag more than one name yet.

      sless milani That's ok. Yes you have a fair point in saying that Tonya had already beaten Nancy before so there really wasn't a reason to do it. (I am glad that Nancy wasn't badly hurt though.) I will say one thing for Tonya, it was admirable how she went on to make a name for herself in women's boxing. It would have been easy for her to just hide away and fade into obscurity, but she picked herself up and started from the bottom all over again in a completely different sport and ended up winning several titles. Whatever else people may think, you've got to admit that takes guts.

      ChooseYour Poison I'm also glad she wasn't hurt beyond the point she couldn't recover. I do wish that Tonya would have never met her ex....I'm sure she does too.

    That's incredible talent she had. It's so sad that was over shadowed by the event that ended her career. If only the people in her life supported and believed in her ability instead of ruining it and her in the process.

    Tonya deserved better than she got from the people in her life. I feel sorry for Tonya Harding. She had and continues to have a rough life, with everyone she has ever trusted and relied upon screwing her over. If she was a star in the NFL or NBA the same people bashing her still would be saying she deserves another chance. Tonya deserves a break! The people in skating should be ashamed for keeping her out. She's STILL make a great coach !She has the heart of a lion, and I wish her all the best.

    I'm not a Harding fan at all but as much as it pains me to admit, this woman had some amazing talent. I was never a skater, but I was a gymnast and from watching her I could always pinpoint when someone with stellar coordination. I do enjoy watching the last 3rd of this program when the music picks up. She moves so well and I love seeing her emotion show through so much.

    Her husband called himself her agent. They were really into the Rocky movies. Her husband took to heart when Mick was protecting Rock by setting up his fights with weaker fighter to keep the title. I could see him arranging the attack on Nancy without her knowledge and the embarrassment she must of felt after finding out.
