Note: The video states Mirai Nagasu was the second American to land a triple axel in competition (this was recorded before her Olympic success). In 2005, American Kimmy Miessner completed a triple axel in national competition, though not world competition. You can read about it here: www.espn.com/ol...
Want to see Tonya' Harding's routine? You can find one version here:
• Tonya Harding 1991 Nat...
In this episode of Vox Almanac, Phil Edwards explores the triple axel and why it's such a big deal. The figure skating jump is legendary among ice skaters, from Tonya Harding's 1991 triple axel to modern icon Mirai Nagasu's attempts in competition. It turns out that the physics of the triple axel makes it a uniquely difficult jump - and one worth learning about.
As a forward-edge jump, the mechanics of a triple axel requires technical acumen from skaters while they still try to maintain an artistically interesting performance. Pioneers like Midori Ito and Tonya Harding had to jump, ramp up rotation speed, and then land all while trying to look good. This effort set them apart from competitors like Nancy Kerrigan, but it wasn't easy to land a triple axel in competition.
And that difficulty might be why the triple axel endures as the pinnacle of figure skating performance - and why it's sure to light up the 2018 Winter Olympics as well.

So, you’re telling me you hurl yourself in the air off of one foot moving forwards, make 3.5 rotations while absorbing massive gravitational force, and then landing basically on a knife blade in the opposite direction...
....yeah I’ll just take up knitting.
Jarrel Brannon its easy
It takes years of training.
I'm 12 and i can only do a single axel and I see 9 year olds who can do doubles at my rink lol
WilliamE216 she did the triple several years before the "incident", and she would have attempted it at the Olympics regardless of who was competing.
Anika 😂 Sure
The expression she makes when she realizes she will be able to fully complete the jump without falling is pure gold.
It's cute and badass at the same time.

@@mureithikivuti 04:44, just as she completes the landing
Tonya Harding did it in 1991 and it took 27 years for the second American to do it in a competition. Only 8 women have ever done it..... Tonya is badass.
How many men have done it ?
sundance cassidy, most top male figure skaters can do the 3A. the 1st male 3A i believe was 1978. Brian Orser did the 1st in the olympics in 1984. Midori Ito was the 1st lady to do the 3A in 1988 and she was also the 1st lady to do the 3A at the olympics in 1992. To date, 8 women have landed the 3A in international competition. Kimmie Meisner of the US did a 3A at US nationals in 2005 I believe but that was not international so she is not counted in the 8.
@iM tHrEw according to Harding it was her crazy husband. She knew something was up but she claims she didnt think he club her leg.
@Isr asr how many men have done the triple axel though?
@@nickgarner7460 - Vern Taylor did the 1st 3A in 1978. Since then it has become a standard jump for male figure skaters competing at national and international levels. There is no count I can find because it would be too many to count. If you watch Midori's 1990 worlds LP in Halifax on either the Canadian or UK versions, the triple axel she did was so incredible that Toller Cranston on the Canadian version and Alan Weeks on the UK version said her triple axel was as good or better then any in the competition including the men, implying all the men did the 3A at the competition.
I know less about the triple axel after watching this.
Same, I'm confused. Too much physics 😐
Well, just imagine this. Try to jump as high as you could by your own force. Then try now to jump when someone pushed your feet up. You’re going to know that you can jump higher when you have that assistance. And that is the secret of the jumps in figure skating. The higher you jump, the better and the more spin you do on the air.
So why Axels are so special? Well, there are other jumps that also don’t have that toe pick assistance but all of them start at a backward position and landing on a backward position again- creating the number of spins needed. So if you spin in the air 3 times then it is a triple. On the other hand, axels have a forward approach and backward landing- giving an extra half rotation. So if you want to have your axel count as a 3A, you must spin in the air 3 1/2 revolutions.
But I want to also take note that when you jump in figure skating, both height and distance are important. And the physics comes in there.
I understand it...?

It didn’t help

1. this video was made by Americans
2. if something was so far only achieved by a single person then it is a special feat and thus worth putting emphasis on
0:24 For those that don't care about "first Americans" participation awards, the first woman to land it was Japanese Midori Ito in 1988. The first man to land it was Canadian Vern Taylor in 1978.

Dirty Poul looks like someone doesnt know how to admit that they posted without knowing what they were talking about. Also wow the American channel is focusing on American skaters that they have easier access to than skaters from other countries? Who knew?
Oh, forgot about a conclusion. I just want to say that I hope this makes it clear why I made my first comment. There's more to it than just this video.

look up the quad axle because it makes this seem like a meaningless platitude to demean women and girls by not holding them o the same standards of everyone else.
These dancers are top line athletes. Full on dedication and hard work for years and years non stop. Honestly just amazing work.
Don'tHateMe CauseYou'reWrong Figure skating is a sport as well as an art. These skaters enjoy what they do, just as any other athlete in any other sport does. It’s a passion.

If you are going to do a feature on ladies performing the triple axel, Midori Ito comes first. Not only as the 1st woman to complete the triple axel in world competition, but also the 1st woman to complete the triple axel at the Olympics. Her triple axels are always rated the best. Tonya only learned to do the triple axel because she saw Midori do it at the NHK competition in Japan in 1990. If you want to see a perfect triple axel watch Midori's long program skate at the 1990 Worlds at Halifax. In all 3 broadcasts of the competition, U.S., Canada and U.K. the commentators said it was the most incredible jump ever performed in world competition by a female competitor. Toller Cranston, the famous Canadian figure skater who was doing the Canadian broadcast said it was probably the best triple axel done at the competition including the men.
@The Name Thing Is Not Happening TH-cam Tonya tried a triple axel at the 1990 US Olympic Festival Figure Skating in her free skate and fell on it. That was before the 1990 NHK I mentioned above. I don't know if she attempted a 3A in competition before that or how long she may have been practicing it. A 2005 Spokane article I read on Tonya said that when Tonya and her coach Dody saw Midori land an incredible triple axel in practice at the 1990 NHK, Tonya decided when she got back home she would learn and add the triple axel to her program which she did at US Nationals in 1991.
Midori I read was attempting the 3A in practice at 14 or 15 years old but suffered a fractured ankle so her coach banned it. After the Calgary olympics in 1988, Midori said in an interview that she decided she had to reactivate the triple axel in order to win at the world and olympic level. Her goal was to attempt and land a triple axel at the 1992 Olympics.
they mention midori at 3:50
@@ikea3035 yes that is true. But Tonya is the focus of the video. Midori is barely mentioned.

IT IS impressive but she wasn’t the first woman but she was the first American woman and soon after another woman did a quad jump so I do say that media is focusing on her too much.

I think you missed an opportunity to update and praise Mirai as the first American lady to land a clean triple axel at the Olympics, on her way to a bronze team medal last night!
And only the 3rd woman EVER to land it at the Olympics (after Midori Ito and Mao Asada.)
And when do you think this was recorded?
Yeah, it's too bad Vox doesn't have the ability to see the future.
joulipatchouli Dumbass
VOX has put out very timely videos in the past. Obviously the footage was recorded a white back, but it would hardly have been a big deal to at least put an end card like "Congratualations Mirai for landing a clean triple axel at the Olympics!' if not an end card video message.
Yuzuru Hanyu probably written this in one of his notebooks, also imagined it a thousand times so his body could simulate it easily. Ugh. Quad Axel, we will witness it soon, I just hope Hanyu would be the first one who will land it in a competition.
Cool to see a yoongi stan here
Tbh, Yuzuru probably learned more from Midori than Tonya. Tonya was the first American woman but the first ever woman to do triple axel was a Japanese woman named Midori Ito. Also the first woman to do a quad jump was Miki Ando, another Japanese woman. So most likely his inspo comes from his own country not Tonya.
One year later and the first skater to land a quad axel in international competition is Ilia Malinin from the USA. Hanyu retired before he could successfully do it, but Ilia's quad axel is absolutely beautiful and phenomenal.
@@TawonYounge Yeah I know, but in my opinion Ilia Malinin's Quad Axel isn't beautiful. He has this excessive skid that makes it a backxel technique.
I prefer Yuzuru's technique in Beijing Olympics, 90° Pre-rotation and quick entry to Axis.
@@Mia-rf1pu thank you 💜
That editing drove me bonkers 😒 The whole time I was trying to understand the move so I could appreciate it and they would start to show the move and I would think, "Ah yes, here it is," and then they WOULD CUT AWAY. Then I was just annoyed with whatever they would show or say afterwards. Not even sure how many times that exact thought sequence happened during the whole thing. I'm definitely not watching again to count.

@@Chikitew lol i didn't mean it's his jump like he's the only one with a claim to it or bc he made it the most famous. i'm calling it his jump bc if u know anything abt yuzuru, the triple is his default jump and he treats it like it's as easy as any jump with one rotation. not disrespecting these women and the history they made at all, just mentioning how yuzu has integrated it into his skating
@@Chikitew it’s not his jump but it isn’t their jump either if you’re making it about who did it first.
Who thinks Yuzu can land a 4A someday?
Firebrain not me.
Firebrain heck yes
YESSSS
He said that he tried landing it in practice but it’s extremely hard , no body has ever attempted it in competition but maybe for the next Olympics we get one from him , tbh i would just rather see him skate the way he does , his usual routines are hard as heck already and the way he skates is just so beautiful that it doesn’t need to be drowned in countless technical elements
Apparently he has landed it in harness and can complete the rotations (but not land) without harness already. I have hope he'll fulfill this dream of his as well in the coming 2-3 seasons. His axel is absolutely gorgeous and huge as it is, so i have no doubt that the quad version wouldn't be any less gorgeous.

ugh this guy annoys me, midori ito was the first women to land the triple axel EVER not just in world competition and why is he so focused on tonyas triple when midori did it first??
Because Tonya was an American. Who also became the subject of a huge scandal.
Because tonya’s was more we’ll known. Don’t be upset with the dude. He probably didn’t write the script for the video, he was just doing his job.
He literally never implied Tonya was the first ever. He specifically said American. Vox has a heavy American audience because they’re an American company.
Also, 3:54 because you apparently have the attention span of a potato
Because tonya was the first american
Hello! Please watch "I, Tonya" (if you haven't) because this says A LOT about Tonya Harding's backstory :) She has been through a lot, and yes maybe Midori did worked harder than her, but have you seen what Tonya has been through? She was raised from an abusive family where her mom forced her into skating and even went as far as to cancel her education. Following this, she ran away from home to live with her ex-husband only to know that he was abusive as well towards her. Also, if this wasn't disheartening enough, she got caught in a scandal where she is partly guilty for wanting to send death threat letters however she never planned to hurt Nancy Kerrigan physically (and for this she was given a 3 year life sentence far worse than the main suspects themelves while also having her career being put to an end). So I want to ask you to please, give Tonya Harding a shot at being put to the spotlight because this is the only and last time she will ever be in it. I love Midori too! She's so amazing for pulling off the courage and determination to do the first ever triple axle, but yes I just want Tonya to be acknowledged as well :)
can someone explain to me why it's a big deal for an American to do it and no one talks about the women that were actually first?

I'm loving the figure skating focus! If people don't know how talented and powerful figure skaters are, they should now!
meh, this foucs comes and goes every 4 years
It’s not the issue of understanding the talent, it’s about having interest in the activity in general. I have no real interest in a triple axel or anything about figure skating in general, but I don’t deny the fact that those figure skaters have talent or tons of hours of practice. I tried figure skating, it’s bloody tough. Yeah if I kept at it I would have been good by now but it just wasn’t my thing. The sport doesn’t appeal to me, it’s just a meh.
I’m sure those people know that skaters have talent, they’re just not interested in the sport in general. It that could be said of a lot of other activities besides skating.
At least show us the original video first...

Achim Titus Watch Hanyu. He has the best 3A in the world, with the most difficult entries and exits.
What happen was sooo wrong to Nancy. But after seeing tonya’s movie... it really shows sooo much insight to what she was going through her whole life.
Yes it does, but honestly most people who commit or conspire in such acts had some kind of poor upbringing. Also keep in mind, this was Tonya telling the story through her own filter. Grain of salt is somewhat required.
I landed my double axel in competition the same day that tonya landed her triple axel on the 1991 worlds, excatly 30 years.
Im a roller figure skater so a double axel is a big deal since each skate weights almost 2 kg, the most dificult jump ever landed is actually the triple axel, by only 3 men
Way to go!
Wow
Midori Ito had the best triple Axels. They were high, well-centered and seemed to float in the air. Watch her triple Axel at the 1990 World Championship in Halifax, or the one she did at the 1990 NHK Championships. Spectacular. To me, she was the best women’s jumper in figure skating.
First ever woman to land a triple axel in a world completion: Midori Ito 🇯🇵
First ever woman to land a quadruple jump: Miki Ando 🇯🇵
First ever American woman to land a triple axel in a word completion: Tonya Harding 🇺🇸
First ever woman to land three triple axels in one program: Mao Asada 🇯🇵
First ever American woman to land a triple axel in the Olympics: Mirai Nagasu🇯🇵🇺🇸
agree. Midori did a perfect triple axel in 1990 in Halifax and in 1993 and 1994 as
a pro.
"Tonya Harding, my star"
Ocean too bad she’s a crazy ass criminal!
"With a Crowbar"
Just saying the evidence is there, just saying
Its from a song
P A R I G O N 0w0
You could argue there’s enough evidence to say that almost anyone close to her did it.
I wonder how many female skaters can do a triple axle reliably well when using a jump harness?
Gracie Gold was doing it on harness last season!
Well, it's not really gonna help her much now, is it?

Yet Yuzuru did triple Axel like it was so easy
Umm...A movie by Australian actress, Margo Robbie, came out 3 weeks prior to this video, hence this American reporter from the American publication, "Voxx" talking about American, Tonya Harding, and her triple axel.
Funny now with Ilia‘s Quad axel
Midori Ito is the first and still the best triple axle by a woman
first, yes. the best? i wouldn't say so. the girls just keep getting better and better with their jumping technique as time goes on.
First ever woman to land a triple axel in a world completion: Midori Ito 🇯🇵

@@anciiie you should watch her triple axel in 1990 and 1993.
Top 10 anime super powers
Rock Matt superpower theory
Rock Matt I was in tears laughing!
And now the quad axel has finally been done. Well done Ilia
Tonya was the first and she was powerful . Her mum pushed her to be the best . Her husband Jeff lived from her money and ruined her carrier with planing the attack . Sad for her . She was so good .
here after watching Ilia land a 4A, it’s so cool to see the progression in skating!!

Omae wa mao shindeiru.

Nani means what
The triple axel is no longer such a big deal, due to boundaries being pushed. The Quad axel has now become the jump to shoot for.
Not for women.
Harding is by far the best skater of her era and never got her due. Go Tanya!
Quad axle was just completed!
Who saw I, Tonya
Me
Was it good? It had Margot Robbie.
Erik P.T.
It's a good black comedy. Allison Janney will win the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award. It won't change your opinion of Tonya, but it will change how you feel about Tonya.
Elevens Eggos Great friggin movie!!!
Erik P.T. Yes a very good movie. I recommend it
Scientists say this breaks the laws of physics.
Figure skaters: *lemme just prove that wrong*
The Barbie thing was a lil weird too me, but thumbs 👍🏽 to the video. FYI I’m high asf legal
🇺🇸
This is interesting to see, now that the quad axel has been done in competition!
Me: it's 3 am i should sleep (know nothing about figure skating)
Brain: watch Why the triple axel is such a big deal
Think it'd be loud if a zamboni came while filming?
Have and have not
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I love that he used Barbie as a model :D
I literally learned all of this after watching I, Tonya hehe
I don't believe the movie mentions Midori Ito being the first woman to land a triple axel, before Tonya. What a surprise.
E - probs cuz it was literally about this one person and not even half focused on the triple axel
The movie isn't called Tonya Harding and the History of the Triple Axel
*american as in only the US
