When she skates you can see and feel how much she loves it
What is amazing is that after 20 years (16 at this point) of doing it, she never seemed to be sick of it. She was born to do it. So I can't imaging nothing worse than being banned for life from competing from a sport you basically reinvented.
@@gutz1981 Absolutely horrible. They took away her whole life at the time.
Thankfully she went on, continued to skate (just not compete), did Dancing With the Stars, and most importantly, has her own family now.
I love her outfit here! It really suits her attitude and energy.

Had she of been born to a family where she was not abused and maybe a bit more means..... Wish the judges would have solely scored on her skating alone. She had sooooooo much talent and passion. No one skates like her. A joy to watch.

Hardly watch Midori Ito's performance. But it was very good and Tonya deserved slightly higher marks, but compared to Ito, not the best.

Amazing when you understand the cliqueish world of US ladies figure skating that this gal went as far as she did. She never had the designer outfits tailored just for her,hairstylists and makeup people or the expensive PR assistance. It all makes a difference in the artistry -
And yet she will be remembered more than most of them….
As much as I enjoy all the pretty outfits, it shouldn’t be about how they look. Maybe they should all wear the same thing, and be judged for their ability, as it is in most sports.

Maybe not Tonyas best performance or outfit, in my humble opinion of course, but that last spin was amazing! I don't think I've ever seen her do that before or probably anyone else either. If I'm not mistaken she changed positions three times, the last position with her hands/arms behind her back, was magnificent! Tonya was a beautiful girl, she was what, 19 years old in this video? She was quite lovely, her face was so pretty and her hair was really cute! I can't believe that people thought she was too big or that she weighed too much and that she wasn't pretty!!! Total BS!!! She was just right in every way!!!💖

Miss Harding was such a great skater and oh so talented. This is how I love to remember her career ( on a high note). And I just love how she wipe her head/hair! Very sassy!!

Tonya was a great skater. This was her peak time and I am sorry that things didn't go well for her afterwards. She was such a talent and it is nice to see old clips that really showed her ability and her at her top form! THANKS FOR POSTING!!!!

I LOVE that costume!!!
The audience seemed far less excited here. In all of her US performances before '94 her jumps were always met with enthusiastic cheers and claps. And no question she should have scored higher!!

This camera quality is insane 💯
She always averaged 5.7 for this short. Even presentation-wise, she scored way too low for what she did, and she was enthusiastic while performing a beautifully unique program for the times. Technically, it was a 5.8 or 5.9 average, and stylistically it was a 5.7-5.8.
Disagree. Tonya's jumps were good here, but someone like Midori's jumps were even higher at this competition, and Ito did a Rippon on her solo double jump. Both Ito and Yuka Sato showcased much more technical prowess in their skating skills and choreography by having more complex steps and choreography in-between with more control over their movement and positions (much more control and superior positions in Sato's case). Tonya's spins were fast and centered but her positions were basic (outside of the layback) compared to Ito and Sato's more complex combination spins. Sato's flying camel was also fast. Midori had the best step sequence out of all of them and showed some difficult edge work during her spiral sequence compared to Harding. All of that comes into play when judging both the technical merit and presentation scores.

I totally LOVE the outfit - it is so "out there" and just amazing. Always loved her - wish she could have held it all together.
A great start to her golden season (first at Nationals/second at Worlds) even with some good but not great scores here at NHK.. her scores did shoot up at Worlds to be more reflective of her performance level. She performed early in Munich in the SP yet pulled some 5.9’s so clearly the judges were ready then to give her high scores for skating clean..
This is my favorite costume of her and my favorite short/original program.

Tonya was the greatest skater and unfairly maligned. If she only had the support & PR machine that other skaters with favored skaters had, how far she would have gone. She was stellar. Exploited by a loathsome husband. The lifetime ban by the skating union was criminal.

My only complaint would be how she hold her hands. She’s using “jazz hands”. If she had closed her hand out her fingers together the hand positions would not look so awkward

Absolutely! According to one of the commentators at '91 Worlds, this was one of several dresses made by her mother, which, if true (and I suspect it is), is interesting given that her mother was very abusive toward her at times.
Technically I'd give this a 5.8-5.9 and presentation I'd give it a 5.8.

Love this outfit. One thing I noticed that improved the heck year is the way she held her arms and hands. She didn't seem to notice them here, just focusing on what she needed to be fast and athletic, but the judges pay attention to that. Also had she freshly colored her hair she could have been judged better on appearance
Chris Coyne Yes and remember another thing many skaters had that Tonya lacked - the $$$ ballet training most of the girls got from a young age to develop the grace necessary-
@@MTknitter22 That's actually not true. Tonya also got a tons of comped coaching thanks to Diane and also took dance/ballet lessons too. A lot of champion skaters didn't get that but worked hard despite their lower economic backgrounds. The problem is that she took it all for granted and was ungrateful about it. All stemming from the fact that had an unstable and abusive family home making her turn out the way she did.
Tonya was a great skater. Definitely Olympic gold medal material. It's such a shame that the slandel happened that ruined her career and brought Nancy Kerrigan stardom.
I never knew that she skated to Frankie Goes to Hollywood. I know that Bourne & Kraatz did in 1996. Did she use the same short at 91 worlds?

I thought she looked disappointed in the scores, not with Tonya.
Everyone keeps in the comments keeps saying she was "underscored for her talent", but let's keep in mind that she only did 1 combination and 1 another jump. In the ENTIRE program. If anything, she should have gotten more points in artistic and for a clean program.
No, she did all the required SP jumps. The jump out of connecting steps had to be a double at this point, and she did a double Flip.
This was the short. You're only ALLOWED to do 8 elements.
to be more clear, in the short, they were required (and only allowed) to do one triple/double combination (she did triple lutz/double toe), 1 double jump (she did a double flip), and the double axel. Sooo... yeah.... welcome to skating.
