I dont care what anyone says... Kwan is the best skater of all time, period. People can try and try and try to disect her mistakes, but when it comes down to it, everyone knows she is the best. Just ask any skater who has had to compete against her!
I think maybe you're forgetting what ladies' figure skating was like in 1998. There were VERY few competitors at the senior level who were as artistically and technically well-rounded as she was. VERY few. Quite frankly, there are still very few who understand how to perform with artistry and not simply 'look pretty.' She was one of the sport's masters. Even if figure skating was not a competitive sport, she would STILL be considered one of it's masters.
@allenglandlawns You also have to consider the competition especially this was an olympic year. The other skaters by far didn't skate cleanly as well. There have been many skaters in the past who has won olympic, world, national gold with falls and mistakes. It's just people, including yourself, put mIchelle on such a perfection pedestal cuz she has spoiled us all these years with perfect performances and 6.0s that we tend to forget that she is human.
It's about taste, I think. So no heresy. The music is quieter than other pieces she used. The ending is still quite dramatic. I think it worked for her. This is my favorite long program of hers, but again, it's about taste. No right or wrong.
Real athletes like Irina pay dearly for the littlest things? There was never a skater who was propped up more than Irina Slutskaya. Not on her jumps but on her artistry--or lack thereof. She received 5.9s when she deserved 5.4s--or lower. The IJS also seemed designed especially for her, with its excessive rewards for Biellmann spins and spirals--her signature moves.
No, that was technically a fall. She put a hand on the ice and stepped out in such a way that without a hand she would have been laying on th ice. That said, she had the best skate of the night...
@allenglandlawns: You've never actually named these mysterious "gifted wins" you keep talking about. Of the five world titles she won, which did you feel she did not earn? And of the programs she was given 6.0's for, which programs did you feel she was gifted 6.0's????
@allenglandlawns: Wow. Well, thanks for explaining, but I can't understand how you feel that way, unless there's a personal bias against her. 1996 was a close call, you're right; 2000 you say she was "gifted" but really what you mean is she skated perfectly and the others messed up. She should be applauded for that! 2001, I TOTALLY disagree: Kwan was PERFECT, 7 triples, including 3-3. Irina's program, if skated well, may have been harder technically, but she didn't skate clean, and the artistry
@allenglandlawns: Nice try. I was actually seriously wondering what world and 6.0 scores you think she was gifted. And you decided not to name any. I'm a Kwan fan who actually agrees that Tara earned the gold in 1998; at the same time, I feel that all of her World titles were deserved, and certainly all the praise she gets from fans and skaters alike. So, I'm sorry you couldn't back up your vitriol with any thing but name calling.
cont... was not in the same league. 2003: Kwan again skated a beautifully clean short and long. Listen, it's not just Dick that though Kwan was brilliant and deserved the wins/titles: Listen to Eurosport coverage sometime. They gushed over her just as much, as did Japanese coverage. Sure, some of the 6.0's in 2005 at Nationals were gifted, but, as you said, they were giving them out like candy. Cohen got several too. Just admit you have this hatred and bias towards the girl; no objectivity
amen! i think that ideal skater would have to have michelle's consistency and passion too. the only person who comes close these days imo is yu na kim.
Yeah isnt she the one who beat Kwan when Kwan was 14 and then was kicked off the US squad, released a sex tape and is now boxing... Yeah Ive heard of her, but I didnt feel that type of trash belonged on a Kwan comment blog. Seriously though, Im not trying ot be mean either, just trying to be a little funny. Harding was so good back in the day, I really hate what she did to herself. Her old programs are amazing.
@allenglandlawns: I promise you I'm not a "kwan fanatic." I do think she is a wonderful skater, but I agree that there were times she lost deservingly: I thought Tara earned the gold, and I also was thrilled when Maria won in 1999. I can admire other skaters, but you, my friend, are incapable of saying a single nice thing about her ever, which, to me, makes your opinions irrelevant: You simply cannot be objective, and I find it very very odd frankly.

The program is just so beautifully choreographed. Every movement has meaning.
Even with the fall and the pop, she did 6 triples. Well done, Michelle!
Like Janet Lynn - fall and get up smiling. God, I love her.

Six triples, despite the mistakes. A worthy champion.
i love how graceful she is with her triple triple toe loops

Unfortunately, Michelle got hurt ( her toes ) before the 98 Olympics.
So lucky Olympics Cinderella Tara. 😂

This was when she started having issues with the Axel for some reason. Those issues carried on till the next year.
Jose Hill growth spurt ?
wow... I didn't expect that fall on 2 axel at all! I thought that she had felt on her planed 3-3 combo.

@allenglandlawns and ps, she didn't screw up at the olympics. Tell me what you consider as screwing up?

@allenglandlawns Kwan won the silver with no mistakes, how is that screwing up? You are just too much.

Is anyone else confused by so many triple toes? Triple toe and attempted triple toe (double) and then the triple toe at the end ?
You're allowed to repeat a jump if the one is in combination
I am so jealous of her body. I wish I had a body like that but oh well........LOL.
When other skaters fall, it's a disaster. When Kwan falls, it's "a minor, minor, minor mistake". LOL!
And it was only the 2axel. If you are going to fall, you fall on that jump.
It wasn't even a fall, it was a stepout.
@@jjh2456 It was still a disaster. And she was extremely overmarked as well. 5.7/5.9 for such a mediocre performance? Ridiculous...
@@existenzialist sure jan....
@@existenzialist Tara had no artistry , her performance was like a happy puppy.....WoW
